Car Accident

A very kind, long-time student was in a very serious car accident. Rinpoche sent the following advice.

Please help her in the following way. Some of this you may already be doing. When she can see or wakes up, show her my photo, His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s, and Vajrayogini.

Recite in her ear when you can, even if she is not conscious, Buddha’s name mantra and Maitreya mantra. If the person who recites this for her has done nyung näs well or recites more than 10,000 mani mantras a day, then that will have the most effect for her. If there is such a person, then after reciting the mantras, he or she can blow on her body.

Of course, you can recite other mantras for her, but the ones above are the main ones. Please tell her I have her in my heart, and am making prayers for her.

When it is possible place on her body, with the mantra facing down:

  • Long Namgyalma mantra
  • The 11 or 5 powerful mantras
  • Tag Tul text (Nyingma prayer for liberating)

I am also requesting each FPMT center to do 110 recitations of the Diamond Cutter Sutra, or as many recitations as the center can manage, as soon as possible, with strong dedications for her recovery. This is the time when the FPMT organization must help her. She has been working for the organization for so many years.

The specific dedication is:
For Linda, if it is beneficial and there is karma, to her quick recovery, and for her to live in bodhicitta and actualize enlightenment as quickly as possible. If not, for her to have a peaceful death, be reborn in the pure land, and achieve enlightenment as quickly as possible, or to receive a perfect human rebirth, meet a perfectly qualified Mahayana virtuous friend, be able to practice the Mahayana path, and become enlightened as quickly as possible.

Parasites

Rinpoche gave the following advice on what to do if you have parasites and have to take medication to kill them.

Lama Yeshe used to say: Take the medicine, but take it, as much as possible, with compassion, a motivation of strong compassion, as strong as you can.

You can, of course, dedicate your practices to the little beings. Also, you can add Medicine Buddha puja, the King of Prayers, and the Heart Sutra, also any of the eight prayers. Make dedications for the little sentient beings.

 

Student Very Sick

A student who was very, very sick wrote to Rinpoche asking for advice. His letter and Rinpoche’s response are below.

Student: Early morning (3:15 am) on 18 December, I woke up from a sound sleep, looking at my photo of my most beloved Lama Zopa Rinpoche. I was almost frantic; I felt he was asking me to do something.

I tried to meditate and find out what he was requesting of me. I looked all over the house for your email. I put on all the protection amulets I have, and told him over and over that I would answer him as soon as possible. It was most insistent, and when I woke up this morning, I was covered with huge red welts all over my body. I have no idea what it is, they are like blisters, but they blow up, then shrink, then move to a different part of my body. They itch terribly.

I am OK, doing tonglen, but need to know what, if anything, Rinpoche wants or needs me to do. I am supposed to go into hospital on Thursday for my usual infusion. After that I will be bedridden for a while. I will be most happy to try to fulfill anything that Rinpoche asks of me. I just didn't get what it was.

Rinpoche's Response

Dear one,
I checked again many times. You should do and have the following done:

  • Recite the sutra Entering the Great City of Vaishali six times.
  • A monk at my house will do the naga puja for you.
  • Another monk will recite all the protector prayers, degyä, 50 times, for you, as well as make a tea offering.

Autism

A nun with autism wrote to Rinpoche saying she found it very hard to be around people. Her letter and his response are below.

Student: My question is that I was wondering how necessary my attending public events is for my attaining enlightenment as quickly as possible. I understand that enduring hardship is necessary for attaining enlightenment, but for someone with autism (like myself), being around people is very challenging and my emotional reactions are totally unpredictable.

Rinpoche's Response

Dear Louise,
Thank you for your kind emails.

It is completely OK for you not to attend these events. If you are able to stay alone and practice this is GREAT!!!! It would be a much bigger problem if you were not able to do practice alone; that would be difficult. But the fact that you want to be alone and practice is great. This is a renounced life, living like in retreat. An ascetic life is the best thing. It is a great quality to not want to be with people. This means you are able to stay alone and practice and not waste your life. If you are alone, this is a great thing, especially if you meditate and practice the lamrim; that is an unbelievable thing.

It is great that you are reciting the Sanghata Sutra. Please also recite the Sutra of Golden Light.

Very Sick Student

Rinpoche sent the following advice to a very sick student. Her symptoms are listed below.

Student’s symptoms: Extreme fatigue and weakness, soreness throughout the body; feeling as if she was burning up and freezing (perhaps due to menopause); cervical and uterine growths (one cervical growth was removed); episodic painful aching inside the bones, especially in the arms, legs, hands and feet, and episodic stabbing pain in the neck, shoulders, mid-back, lower back, feet and hands; numbness in the hands and feet; lack of range of motion in the neck (degenerative arthritis with spondylosis [arthritis making holes in the bones] at C4 and 5 and L4 and 5 and degenerative disc disease); spasms in the intestine causing immediate explosive blood, feces and mucus (which she cannot control); burning in the intestine and anus; gas and bloating, with digestion impaired; blood clots and bloody mucus with discharges that look like flesh/skin; cramping and feeling of painful knotting up of the intestine (ulcerative colitis); joints make a cracking sound when she moves.

Rinpoche's Response

This is my advice for you:

1) I need to bless some mantra water for you to drink a sip of every day until the water is finished.
2) His Holiness the Dalai Lama Vajrakilaya powder: Take two teaspoons a day (morning and evening) for five days. I will give you this.
3) Padmasambhava mantra: Eat ten a day for one month. Your friend will make this up into tsampa balls. You need to put the head of the mantra in your mouth first. Don’t bite it, but swallow it whole.
4) Most Secret Hayagriva mantra: For you to eat. Your friend will make this. I have hand-written the mantra and I will make a stamp of it. You should eat eight a day for five weeks.
5) Khung la pill: Four a day for ten weeks. I will give these to you.
6) Hayagriva Tsog Kong: This is a very extensive Hayagriva puja. I will organize this at Sera.
7) Wear the protection mantra liberating body, speech, and mind. I will give this to you. Make sure you wear it all the time.
8) Wear the six syllable mantra. I will write this and give it to you. Also, wear this all the time.
9) I asked a monk to read a number of texts for you yesterday, for protection. Maybe it would be nice to make a small offering to him for this.
10) You need to do White Heruka practice every day for five weeks. [Find links to this practice in the FPMT Catalogue.]
11) You need to make 100 long life tsa tsas (divide them between you and the two nuns). When you have finished, it would be good to make a small offering to both of them for this.
