Unable to Sleep

A student had a big problem with not being able to sleep. She had tried conventional medicine and natural healing, without success. She asked Rinpoche for advice.

My very dear one,
Thank you very much for your kind email. I am sorry it took so long to reply. Actually, my job is putting people to sleep. I think you know this.

If you can't fall asleep, one method is to recite prayers and read the lamrim. Often, when you perform practices, obstacles arise such as falling asleep. So, maybe if you try to meditate for a long time, you will fall asleep.

One time, Geshe Legden was in Delhi with Rongtha Rinpoche and they were sharing the same room, and Geshe Legden said he could not fall asleep. Rongtha Rinpoche said, “If you recite prayers, you will fall asleep.” Partly, he was joking.

People in the West think that it is a problem if you do not sleep, like there is something wrong with you. But it is only a problem if it is causing harm to your health. Otherwise, it can be very useful. Maybe people who need to practice clear light meditation need to sleep.

Anyway, according to my divinations it seems that eating meat comes out very beneficial for you, as well as eating garlic and onions. These things can help with lung (wind imbalance). Also, you can drink the broth from bones, boiling the bones in hot water.

The best thing to do is the practice of the Thirty-five Buddhas: prostrations and recitation. If you do this as much as possible it may help, because it purifies your negative karma and creates the cause for you to achieve enlightenment. You can do it in the morning or evening, whichever is best.

I will also make prayers for you.

With much love and prayers...
