Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave these teachings at Root Institute, Bodhgaya, in December 2003. There were seven days of teachings; days 1 through 4 are included here. You can listen to the remaining days here.

During these four days Rinpoche covered various lamrim topics and gave an oral transmission of Atisha's Jewel Garland and began to give commentary on it. 

Day Two: Lama Atisha's life story, Oral transmission of Atisha's Jewel Garland, Dedications

I thought to read a little bit of Lama Atisha’s life story, maybe I stop here, so basically, so like that, to similarize with the rest of the freedoms and richnesses, how to meditate, how to realize how each one is so precious.

So the idea, since we have, anyway, the teaching, the lam-rim teaching is from Lama Atisha, from The Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment, that’s the root. Since I requested, asked to build the statues these Kadampa geshes here, which is very inspiring to practice lam-rim, to see them is inspiring to practice lam-rim, then to transform the mind into the path, the lojong, particular, utilizing, using the obstacles to practice Dharma, any obstacle, delusion, sicknesses, delusion rising, strong delusion rising, sicknesses, any obstacle, due to other people’s control, those outer obstacles, however, obstacles to practice Dharma, including the problems, the obstacles to practice Dharma, so all those things, all those undesirable things which one experiences to use, as they practiced, to use all these in the path, to use in the path to achieve enlightenment, even the delusions use in the path to achieve enlightenment for sentient beings. By doing tong-len, taking other sentient beings’ all their delusions, attachment, when there’s attachment rising strongly, anger, same, ignorance, self-cherishing thought, by taking other’s those negative thoughts on, in one’s own heart, take in one’s own heart, so take all those things and give it to the self-cherishing thought, take it in one’s own heart and give it all to the self-cherishing thought and destroy the self-cherishing thought. So same, when there’s strong attachment, taking all sentient beings’ attachment within oneself and then destroy the attachment.

However, so using all these obstacles to practice Dharma, all these undesirable things in the path to, all the problems in the path to and utilize, transform in the path to enlightenment, the main thing is by taking all other sentient beings’, the numberless sentient beings those similar problems, all those sufferings, delusions, so this way by transforming the poison into medicine, instead of harming to the health, you make it beneficial for the health. What is regarded obstacle to practice Dharma, by using that to develop bodhicitta, to meditate on emptiness, taking other sentient beings’ the problems or obstacles on oneself, by giving all those obstacles, problems, to the self-cherishing thought, this way, in this way, with the thought transformation, when you use the obstacle to practice Dharma, the problems, when you use to practice thought transformation or another meaning, path to enlightenment, or another meaning, cause of happiness in all sentient beings, so this way you have no obstacle to practice Dharma. Before there was obstacle to practice Dharma; after one applied the meditation of thought transformation, you don’t find obstacle to practice Dharma. So as the Kadampa geshes here they did the practice, so which gives inspiration for that, to practice lam-rim, the heart of the 84,000 teachings of Buddha, to practice lam-rim and all the sufferings, all the obstacles to transform into happiness, the path to enlightenment, cause of happiness to all the sentient beings.

So maybe it’s quicker, rather than reading from Tibetan, to read the English here, quicker and to get devotion to Lama Atisha, so from where the special way of presenting Dharma to mainly subdue the mind, when other teachings can’t subdue the mind, the lam-rim is the only one that subdues the mind, so it came from Lama Atisha. [pause]

“In the eastern part of India...enquired:”

I don’t remember seeing this story. In the Tibetan text it says that all these are arranged by the father and mother, the king, so that the prince, Atisha, to get attracted, to impress, to get attracted in all this, what it says? Dazzled. All this, so many, they chose so many beautiful girls, all these extensive range of songs, so to not let him to go away from home and become monk, so to keep it at home, to attract. I don’t remember seeing that story here, but I saw in Tibetan text, the story the lineage lamas of lam-rim, that story there it’s mentioned this part, just before this discussion, the parents what they prayed and Lama Atisha made prayer, before that, after all that then, when the parents where trying to attract him to stay at home, yeah like that, so arranged all these extensive kind of, anyway, yeah.

“Then the excellent Prince enquired....May I feel pity....”

Pity? Compassion. I’m not sure that one. “May I feel compassion for all living beings.”

“His parents and the others...age of three”

So this is the first teaching from Lama Atisha.

“The prince, by the age of three...guidance of my gurus.” [page 9]

We stop here. Then I give the lung of one short teaching by Lama Atisha, so then, maybe depending on time, then go over this, this Bodhisattva’s Jewel Garland by Lama Atisha.

Yeah, purpose of my life is to free the numberless sentient beings from all the suffering and causes and bring them to enlightenment; therefore I must achieve enlightenment; therefore I’m going to take the oral transmission of Lama Atisha’s teaching, The Bodhisattva’s Jewel Garland.

Due to all the past, present, future merits collected by me, three time merits collects by others, may the bodhicitta be generated within one’s own heart, and one’s own family members, all of us here, in the hearts of all the sentient beings without delay even a second. That which is generated may it be increased.

May the bodhicitta be generated in one’s own heart, one’s own family members, all us here, in the hearts of all the students and all the benefactors, all those supporters, those who give up their life to the organization, doing service to sentient beings, teaching of Buddha, in everyone’s heart, as well as in the hearts of everyone in this world.

[jang chub sem chog....]

May the bodhicitta be generated without delay even a second in one’s own heart, one’s own family members, all of us here, and in the hearts of all the leaders of this world, and in the hearts of all the terrorists, all those groups who are harming to sentient beings in this world, in the hearts of Maoists, all those gangsters, all those who harm so much to other sentient beings, who does so much violence.

That we have now so much freedom to practice Dharma, all this incredible opportunity to practice Dharma, to collect extensive merit and to purify the defilements and to train the mind in the path to enlightenment, opportunity to practice, the freedom to practice Lesser Vehicle path and the Paramitayana path, and the Mahayana secret mantra, Vajrayana, all these teachings taught by Buddha, then solely by the kindness of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the embodiment of all the buddhas’ compassion, to have stable life, all the holy wishes to be succeed immediately. And as well as all the virtuous friends, same. To have stable life, all the holy wishes be succeed immediately. And then Lama, who is kinder than all the three time buddhas, then Lama’s incarnation to be able to complete his study and benefit sentient beings like Lama Tsongkhapa, by showing the same quality.

Due to all the three time merits collected by me and by others, may all the father and mother sentient beings have happiness. May the three lower realms beings be empty forever. May all the bodhisattvas’ prayers be succeed immediately. May I be able to cause all this to happen by myself alone.

Due all the past, present, future merit collected by me, three time merits collected by others, whichever universe, world, country, area, place, house, wherever I am or wherever I will be, just by that, may it cause all the sentient beings in that universe, world, country, area, place, house, never ever to be reborn in the lower realms, their negative karmas immediately get purified, never ever get reborn in the lower realms. And immediately cause to find faith in refuge and karma, and generate loving kindness, compassion, bodhicitta in everyone’s heart, everyone in this universe, world, country, area, place, house. Then, immediately get healed all their sicknesses, cancer, AIDS, whatever sickness that they have immediately get healed. Sentient beings who are living in this universe, world, country, area, place. And those who have spirit harm immediately free them from spirit harm. And those who are wild, crazy, [inaudible] spirit harm, immediately totally free from all those spirit harms and have most meaningful life by actualizing bodhicitta. Then, also, people who have relationship problems, may their hearts filled with the loving kindness, compassion and joy and have the most meaningful life. And those who suffer so much with depression, may their hearts filled with the great bliss and have most meaningful life. And may those who have poverty, have immediate wealth. And may those who are looking for a guru, able to find perfectly qualified Mahayana guru. And those who want to receive teachings, they receive unmistaken teachings. Those who want to do retreat, able to find conducive place and able to have all the realizations during that time, during that retreat.

And may all their wishes be fulfilled, so by myself being in this universe, world, country, area, place, house, all those sentient beings who are in that universe, world, country, area, place, may myself become wish-fulfilling to them, all those sentient beings, may I become wish-fulfilling to them, able to achieve all the happiness what they’re looking for, all their wishes get fulfilled immediately according to Dharma. And complete the path and achieve enlightenment quickly.

So while they are developing the mind in the path, then no one experience war, famine, disease, torture, poverty, sicknesses, dangers of fire, water, air, earthquakes, all the undesirable things, so oneself being in that universe, world, country, area, place, house, then to be able to stop all those things, able to affect, able to be useful to stop all those sufferings.

Due to all the past, present, future merits collected by me, three time merits collected by others, that which are merely labeled by the mind, may the I, who is also merely labeled by the mind, [pause] achieve Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s enlightenment, which is also merely labeled, lead all the sentient beings, who are also merely labeled by the mind, to that enlightenment, which is also merely labeled by mind, by myself alone, who is also merely labeled by mind.

I dedicate all the merits to be able to follow holy actions of bodhisattvas Samantabhadra, Manjugosha, as they realizes.

I dedicate all the merits in the same way as the three-time buddhas dedicate their merits.

Then, due to all these three-time merits collected by oneself, three-time merits collected by others, may oneself, one’s own family members, all of us here, all the students and benefactors of this organization, those who give up their lives to the organization doing service to sentient beings, teaching of Buddha, may all of us have long life, to be healthy, all the wishes to be succeed immediately according to Buddhadharma and may we be able to actualize from guru devotion up to enlightenment, especially bodhicitta, clear light in this very lifetime within all of us, the stainless teaching of Lama Tsongkhapa. [pause]

May all the Sanghas in this organization able to complete their scriptural understanding, realization of the path to enlightenment, on the basis of pure vinaya and receive all the needs, all the protections in their lives.

May all the centers, now, all the FPMT centers that able to be most beneficial to all sentient beings and that able to cause to generate faith in refuge, karma, and actualize bodhicitta, immediately able to cause to generate bodhicitta in everyone’s heart, in the hearts of all the sentient beings and able to spread the stainless teaching of Lama Tsongkhapa in the hearts of all the sentient beings and by receiving all the needs for that. Then may all the projects, whatever each center has, may it be succeed immediately by receiving all the needs.

And may the Universal Education, so here there’s for little ?kids, ?little ?children, and in the United States, there’s here the Maitreya Project Universal Education, there’s _______ _______, then there’s Valentino’s universal education, maybe ten years or quite some time ago in Varanasi and as well as Bodhgaya. Then there’s Adriana’s school, however, this universal education, may the three-time merits collected by oneself, three-time merits collected by others, may the universal education be spread all over the world, be accepted in the public schools and may this universal education able to open the heart of everyone in this world, immediately able to generate loving kindness, compassion, bodhicitta in everyone’s heart. Then in that way it become antidote to the war, to disease, to famine, torture, then dangers of fire, water, air, earthquakes, antidote to everything, solution for everything, antidote for everything, to solve, to stop all these problems, by generating loving kindness, compassion, bodhicitta in all their hearts.

And may every student who comes to universal education, may everyone become like Chenrezig, Compassion Buddha or Chenrezig, source of peace and happiness of all the sentient beings, that even by name, hearing the name that it stops their suffering, saves them from the lower realms and liberates them from samsara and even from the lower nirvana, brings to enlightenment, even by hearing the name, it rescues or protects the sentient beings, it eliminates all the sufferings of samsara. So each person, each student, comes to learn to universal education becomes like that, like Chenrezig, Compassion Buddha.

And may the 500-feet Maitreya Project, which special function that cause to generate loving kindness, compassion, bodhicitta in the hearts of all the sentient beings, purify their mind and, purify their negative karma, defilements and collect extensive merit, and through that, transform their mind, through that then the realization comes, realization of the path comes from that. So which brings peace and happiness in the world in that way, by changing their mind, by purifying their mind and by collecting extensive merit, causing these two to the sentient beings, only then compassion, loving kindness is able to come, able to grow up, able to generate and develop. So able to construct as quick as possible, complete, _____ ______ world, when Maitreya Buddha comes, descends in this world and also funding for this may it be received without delay even a second.

The, I received the oral tranmission of that teaching from Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche at Dharamsala some, quite a number of years ago, but, the one hundred, the lojong, the thought transformation text, put together by great bodhisattva Konchog Gyaltsen, so I requested for this and so received all the teachings except the parting from the four clingings, composed by Drakpa Gyaltsen, the Sakya, great lama Drakpa Gyaltsen, so that one Rinpoche didn’t have the lineage, then later I received that teaching from His Holiness Chogye Trichen Rinpoche, so this is Sakya, so I think that and the commentary body by Drakpa Gyaltsen from His Holiness Chogye Trichen Rinpoche in Nepal.
