Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave these teachings at Root Institute, Bodhgaya, in December 2003. There were seven days of teachings; days 1 through 4 are included here. You can listen to the remaining days here.

During these four days Rinpoche covered various lamrim topics and gave an oral transmission of Atisha's Jewel Garland and began to give commentary on it.

Day One: Developing the wish to repay the kindness of others, Dedications

All the bodhisattvas who are doing work for numberless sentient beings including oneself, all their qualities, they collect merit, in each second limitless skies of merit, whatever they do it’s only for sentient beings, equaling the limitless sky. So all these ordinary bodhisattvas, arya bodhisattvas, all their realizations, all their qualities, the ten bhumis, each bhumi has incredible qualities, that by achieving the first bhumi, twelve times, different pure land, twelve different things that happen, one hundred pure lands one can go, one hundred different teachings one can give, one can do one hundred different concentrations, and one hundred pure lands you can go and make offerings to buddhas, so twelve different things that bodhisattva can do. Then, the bodhisattva who achieved second bhumi, thousand times, the activities are increased a thousand times, manifests a thousand bodies and in pure lands makes extensive offerings to buddhas, teach sentient beings, so like that, double, a thousand times, able to do activities. So like that, the quantities increases, then the ninth or tenth, however, I don’t remember the numbers, however, many billions of billions, trillions, so these twelve different things, activities, can do many trillions of times. So all these bodhisattvas, qualities what they have, the bhumis, all the qualities of these paths, so all these are achieved by depending on the kindness of bin Laden. All these incredible qualities what the bodhisattvas have and what the Buddha, so numberless bodhisattvas, now think here, numberless bodhisattvas came from where? Came by the kindness of bin Laden. So, one bodhisattva came from where? From bin Laden. Now there are numberless bodhisattvas, came from that, from bin Laden.

Now one buddha, who has skies of qualities, whose holy body, speech, mind has skies of qualities, all those qualities that are mentioned in the Abhisamaya-alamkarika in the eighth chapter, in various, in those teachings, all those extensive subjects to study, the qualities of buddha, so one buddha is like that, whose holy body, speech and mind has infinite qualities, like limitless sky, so came from bin Laden, came from bin Laden. It happened, all these qualities are achieved by depending on the kindness of bin Laden. So the very root is great compassion, do you remember? Great compassion generated on him, so from there it started everything, bodhicitta and all, everything, the whole path to enlightenment, so that’s the reason.

So now numberless buddhas born from whom? Numberless buddhas born from bin Laden, came from bin Laden, that numberless buddhas, now here numberless buddhas came from bin Laden, dependent on bin Laden. That we take refuge, that we purify our negative karma, that we have to take refuge, we pray to receive realizations of the path to enlightenment and to be free from the oceans of samsaric suffering, that whom we pray, Buddha, all the numberless buddhas came from bin Laden. Now, Dharma came from bin Laden. Now Sangha, who are attainer of the path, came from bin Laden. So all these three objects of refuge that in one day so many times we take, sang-gye cho dang...., we take refuge to numberless buddhas, numberless Dharma, numberless Sangha, to purify our negative karma, to collect merit and to actualize the path, so now all these whom we rely upon, whom we take refuge to be free from lower realm sufferings, to be free from samsara, to be free from the lower nirvana, so these numberless Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, that we take refuge all the time came from bin Laden. So totally his kindness. So now here, how precious he is, it is inexpressible, how precious it is something can’t express, unbelievable.

So now, like this, every single, the numberless hell beings, the numberless hungry ghosts, numberless animals, numberless suras, asura, human beings, so now like this, every single hell being is like, as I used the example bin Laden, every single hell being, received all one’s own numberless past happiness, present happiness, past happiness, so very precious, present happiness, even more precious, all the future happiness including enlightenment, unbelievable precious, every single hell being. Then not only that, all the objects of refuge, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, including all the bodhisattvas, came from, they are existing by depending on the kindness of every single hell being. So, all the bodhisattvas came from each of them, so precious, how precious. Then all the buddhas came from them, so precious. Now all the Dharma came from them, so precious. All the Sangha came from them, so precious. Each hell being is so precious, unbelievable precious, kind.

So now, like that, do the same meditation, hungry ghost, so same, all one’s own past happiness came from them, how precious, how kind it is. Then present kindness, even more precious. All the future happiness came from them, even much more precious, kind. Then all the bodhisattvas came from them, how incredible, how it’s so precious. And then all the buddhas came from that, so precious. How all the Dharmas came from that, so precious. How all the Sanghas came from them, so precious.

Now same, meditate, animals. All one’s own past happiness received by their kindness, so precious. Now, on top of that, present happiness, even more precious. All the future happiness including enlightenment, even much more precious. And then all the bodhisattvas came from them, so precious. And all the buddhas came them, unbelievably precious, even more precious. Then all the Dharma came from them, all the Sangha came from them, so precious.

Now, every human being. There are numberless human beings, so all one’s past happiness came from them. So precious. Then present happiness came from them, even more precious. Even all the future happiness, up to enlightenment, more, even more precious. Now all the bodhisattvas came from each of them, each of the human beings, so we can think just right here, each of them. Think of one’s own past, present, future happiness. Then all the bodhisattvas came from them, here and all the human beings, so precious. Then, all the buddhas came from them, that one rely upon, take refuge, numberless buddhas came from them, who has infinite qualities, came from each person here, each human being, all the rest, so precious. And then all the Dharma came from each one of them. All the Sangha came from each one.

Now, the same, suras, asuras. There are numberless of each of them. All one’s past happiness came from them, all the present happiness came from them, more precious, all the future happiness came from them, much more precious, so much more precious, kind, kinder and kinder. All the past happiness, so kind, unbelievable kind. Then, present happiness, even more kind and precious. And all the future happiness up to enlightenment, most kind and precious. Then all the bodhisattvas, there are numberless bodhisattvas, all came from their kindness. Then numberless buddhas who has skies of qualities that one take refuge came from each of them, each of the suras, asuras. So precious. Then, Dharma came from them, unbelievably precious. Then, all the Sangha, on the top of that, the three objects that one every day take refuge came from them, they’re so precious.

Same thing the intermediate state beings, did like that before.

So anyway, so that’s the basically meditating on the extensive kindness of sentient beings. Then when we do that meditation then letting go the I, cherishing others, then that comes, cherishing others comes by realizing how, discovering how they are so precious and kind, the extensive kindness. Then from that then taking responsibility to free them from all the suffering and causes and bring them to enlightenment, taking responsibility on oneself to ?actually do it. Then, the thought to achieve enlightenment, to be able to do this perfect work for sentient beings then comes as a method, as a way to actually to liberate sentient beings from all the oceans of samsaric suffering and bring them to enlightenment, actually oneself to do it, as a method for that, oneself to achieve enlightenment, thought to achieve enlightenment, bodhicitta.

So, yeah, so the shortcomings of cherishing the I, that part, only that part we didn’t meditate, I didn’t go through that, but the other part, the need to cherish others, so by thinking of others’ kindness, extensive kindness, then thought of cherishing comes naturally. So therefore, to as much as possible practice mindfulness whenever you see people, dog, insects, whatever, trying to, all my three times happiness, all my past, present, future happiness came from this, I received from this sentient being’s kindness, so feel that. If you meet a person, you feel that, all my past, present, future happiness, if you see a beggar, I receive all my numberless past, present, future happiness came from this person, so precious, so kind. So if you are giving something to a beggar, you meditate that, then you offer with both hands, respectfully, because this, by the kindness of this sentient being, then you become enlightened, then you get all the realizations, bodhicitta and all the realizations, enlightenment, so you offer with both hands respectfully. Not thinking you are beggar, I am rich, you are beggar, dropping in their bowls, not like that, respectfully offer. Think, yeah, like that. Then, on top of that, all the objects of refuge, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, all the bodhisattvas, come from them, so so precious, so kind. So to extend the kindness, how precious it is, then ?do that. However, all my past, present happiness, including enlightenment, I receive from this insect. So as you’re walking around, whatever sentient being you see, practice that. Practice, remember that. If you see rickshaw wallahs, then think that. All my past happiness I received from them. All my present, future happiness, enlightenment, so precious. So, as much as possible, when you go to the stupa or walking round, try to practice this mindfulness. So as much as possible try to, if possible, be mindful of the kindness this way, extensive kindness.

So, then, thought to benefit, to repay the kindness, thought to benefit, thought to do something that comes. If you see somebody’s suffering, sick or somebody who has imperfect limbs or whatever, so thought to do something to help comes. So however, the main, the most important thing, as I mentioned before, most important to help sentient beings, yourself to actualize the path. You can help to that person or to the animal whatever you can do, whatever you can now, can do that, but the main thing, most important one is yourself to complete the path, so that you have all the qualities, you never make any mistake to benefit sentient beings, you are able to perfectly work for the sentient beings. So, the best way to repay the kindness of sentient beings, to help them, best way is first you actualize, for you to complete the path. You do what you can do now but the main thing is to complete the path, to achieve all the qualities, so that you can do perfect work for sentient beings without the slightest mistake. Even the arhat, who has skies of qualities, cannot do perfect work for sentient beings, still makes mistakes. Even the tenth bhumi bodhisattva has skies of qualities, unbelievable qualities, but still makes mistakes, because still there’s, still that tenth bhumi bodhisattva hasn’t abandoned the four causes of unknowing, not annoying, the four causes of unknowing, not annoying, four causes of unknowing. So tenth bhumi bodhisattva still hasn’t abandoned that, still cannot see the subtle karmas, so therefore it’s possible to make mistakes doing perfect works for sentient beings. So main thing is to benefit others, whatever one can, but the main thing is to complete the path to enlightenment within oneself as quick as possible. So that’s the answer, the main thing what is most benefit for sentient beings. While you are doing those other things, you are doing social service, whatever the other things that you can do now, while you are doing that then main thing is actualizing the path. So, to practice this mindfulness in the break time, not from Dharma, but break time from the session, sitting meditation, break time from sitting meditation, then, so this can do during meditation session, especially what I want to ask to do is, while there’s break time, while one’s moving around, walking or whatever, so like that. So I stop here.

[Dedication, short mandala]

Due to all the past, present, future merits collected by me, the three time merits collected by others, may the bodhicitta be generated within one’s own heart and in the hearts of one’s family members, in the hearts of all of us here, in the hearts of all the sentient beings, and in the hearts of all the students and benefactors and those who give up their life to the organization doing service to sentient beings, teachings of Buddha, including all of them, without delay even a second, bodhicitta to be generated in all the sentient beings’ hearts. And that which is generated, may it be increased.

[jang chub sem chog.... ]

May the bodhicitta be generated within one’s own heart, one’s own family members, and all of us here, in the hearts of everyone in this world.

[jang chub sem chog.... ]

May the bodhicitta be generated within one’s own heart, one’s own family members, as well as all of us here, then in the hearts of all the leaders of this world. If they generate bodhicitta, if one leader generates bodhicitta then all the millions of people who are in that country then they have so much peace and happiness and they are led in the path to happiness, they are led in the unmistaken path to happiness, peace, as well as it makes big difference, even though it’s one person, person in the world who has influence, power, generate bodhicitta, then makes huge differences for the world, because it makes huge difference for many millions of people who are in that country. As well as other countries, it affects, so the prayer is very important, prayer to generate bodhicitta in their hearts is very important, as well the leaders of the Mainland China government, without delay even a second, to actualize bodhicitta.

I heard that, I think His Holiness mentioned during a teaching, asked, and this great bodhisattva, great pandit like ancient pandits like Nagarjuna or Chandrakirti, so forth, bodhisattva Kunu Lama Tenzin Gyaltsen, who was a great scholar, great pandit like those ancient great pandits, Indian pandits, great bodhisattva said, so His Holiness asked, His Holiness said in the teachings, His Holiness asked to Kunu Lama when His Holiness was receiving extensive commentary on the Bodhicaryavatara, His Holiness asked Kunu Lama Rinpoche what prayer, not prayer, what to do for the cause of Tibet, to get freedom. So Kunu Lama Tenzin Gyaltsen answered, if the leaders of the Mainland China government actualized bodhicitta, then the freedom of Tibet will happen. So this prayer is very important. To stop all the, this prayer it becomes prayer to, we pray to generate bodhicitta, but itself becomes a prayer to stop all the wars, famine, disease, torture, poverty, sicknesses, all the dangers of fire, water, air, earth, all these came from negative karma, negative karma came from negative thoughts, so if there’s bodhicitta then there’s no danger to create these negative karmas from where, which results all these problems, only good karma, then result only peace and happiness, perfect enjoyment, inner prosperity, outer prosperity. So this one prayer includes many other prayers, by succeeding, by actualizing bodhicitta then all those other things get stopped. So, this third prayer, bodhicitta to be generated in the leaders of the countries, leaders of the world, and to be generated in the hearts of the Maoists, in the hearts of all those groups, gangsters, terrorists or, I said tourists, not terrorists. So, my tongue gets slipped out, I meant terrorists, not tourists. Just the “t,” the “t” becomes this way and that way, the “t.” Anyway, all the groups who cause a lot of harm to others, so bodhicitta to be generated in all their hearts.

[jang chub sem chog.... ]

All these great opportunities that we have now, every day to collect so much merit, to purify and especially by meditating on bodhicitta, limitless skies of merit we collect, and meditating on the path, the lam-rim, each time we are getting closer and closer to enlightenment, each time when we meditate on lam-rim, even doing direct meditation on the lam-rim by reciting lam-rim prayer, so all this, each time when we do sadhana of the deity, it plants so much seed of enlightenment or the path, becoming closer to enlightenment each time, all this is due to the kindness of Buddha of Compassion, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and second, even though you haven’t met, but all this opportunity at the centers, these FPMT centers, this is due to Lama Yeshe, who is kinder than all the three time buddhas, to me and to us. So therefore, all their holy wishes to be succeed immediately and His Holiness to have stable life, long life, and as well as Lama’s incarnation, Lama Ösel to have long life and to be able to complete study in the monastery and to benefit sentient beings like Lama Tsongkhapa.

[gang ri ra wai.... and other dedication in Tibetan]

May all the father and mother sentient beings have happiness. May the three lower realms beings be empty forever. May all the bodhisattvas’ prayers be succeed immediately. May I be able to cause all this to happen by myself alone.

[Dedication in Tibetan]

Due to all the past, present, future merits collected by me, three time merits collected by others, may I be able to offer limitless skies of benefit to all sentient beings, like Tsongkhapa, by having the same quality within me as Lama Tsongkhapa has, from now on in all my future lifetimes.

Due to all the past, present, future merits collected by me, three time merits collected by others, may any sentient being who sees me, touches me, remembers me, think about me, dreams of me, talks about me, criticizes, praises, even sees a picture of oneself, then just by that may they never ever get reborn in the lower realms. So what it affects to them, what it affects back to them is then causing them never ever get reborn in the lower realms, may they never ever get reborn in the lower realms. By purifying their negative karma, may they be instantly free from sicknesses, spirit harm, negative karma, defilements. May they actualize the bodhicitta, loving kindness, compassion, may it cause to have faith in refuge and karma, actualizing bodhicitta in all their hearts instantly. And may they, by seeing me, touching me, remembering me, thinking of me, all that, so yourself, I’m saying here yourself, other sentient beings seeing you, hearing you, touching you, remembering you, talks about you, so by this, so to have all these effects to them, become wish-fulfilling, all this become wish-fulfilling towards the sentient beings, all their wishes for happiness get succeed instantly according to Dharma. And by actualizing the path may they achieve enlightenment as quick as possible.

Due to all the past, present, future happiness, not happiness, sorry, I ran into happiness, I think, run into happiness again, now here talking about the cause of happiness, merit. Due to all the past, I think my tongue got habituated in talking happiness. Due to all the past, present, future happi-, due to all the past, present, future merits, I must have created very little merits, very difficult to come out, due to all my past, present, future merits, and then three time merits collected by others, that which exist but do not exist from their own side, that which is totally empty, may the I, who exists, but do not exist from its own side, who is totally empty, achieve one’s own deity’s or Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s enlightenment, which exists but doesn’t exist from its own side, that which is totally empty, and lead all the sentient beings, who exist but do not exist from their own side, who are totally empty, to that enlightenment, which exists but doesn’t exist from its own side, that which is totally empty by myself alone, who exists but do not exist from its own side, who is totally empty.

I dedicate all the merits to be able to follow holy excellent deeds of bodhisattva Samantabhadra and Manjugosha as they realizes.

I dedicate all the merits in the same way as the three time buddhas dedicated their merits.

And may the general teaching, the particular teaching of Lama Tsongkhapa be flourished forever in this world and may it spread in all the directions, this flourish forever in this world by completely actualizing this in this very lifetime in my heart and one’s own family members and all of us here, in the hearts of all the students and benefactors and those who give up their life to the organization, doing service to sentient beings, teaching of Buddha, completely actualize within all our hearts in this very lifetime.

And also please pray that the 500-feet Maitreya statue that which causes all sentient beings to collect merit, to purify the defilements, and which allows to transform their mind into path, from that generate loving kindness, compassion, bodhicitta, and find faith in refuge and karma, and which perfect peace and happiness, ?glory, in the individual person’s life, antidote, and in this way nobody experiencing war/ [?Small part missed]
