Chenrezig Mantra for Spirit Harm

Rinpoche gave the following advice to a woman who wrote to him saying she was possessed by spirits and asked what she could do.

You should recite the longest Compassion Buddha (Tib: Chenrezig) mantra a minimum of seven times per day. This will help you so much. You should do this every day for a long time. The benefits of this mantra are like the infinite sky, even if you recite it only one time.

The main reason you have all these problems is because you are in samsara. This association of body and mind are in the nature of suffering. These aggregates, the mind which circles from life to life, this is what is called samsara. For example, the conditions of this present samsara join together now and in the next samsaric life, and this is the result of creating negative actions in the past out of ego, anger, and attachment. Any spirit harm or problems that arise now are the result of past negative karma. Therefore, you need to get out, to be free from samsara. For this reason, you need to become free from delusion and karma, therefore you need to practice Dharma. There is no other means.

Reciting this mantra and meditating especially helps with this. You particularly need to practice the path contained in this mantra. Therefore, you need to study Dharma. This mantra will help with that.

The lady you mentioned to me who can’t look after her son should also say prayers, and should recite the longest Compassion Buddha mantra. She should do many, many prostrations to the Twenty-One Taras or to Tara. If possible, she should get a picture of the Twenty-One Taras, recite the Praises to the Twenty-One Taras, and make prostrations every day. She should recite the praises twice at dawn, three times at noon, and seven times at night time.

You should teach her how to do prostrations. If you know how, explain to her how to recite the Praises to the Twenty-One Taras. It is very good if she can continue this practice to Tara every day, not just for one day but for a long time. If she doesn’t collect enough merit, wealth will never come. Prostrations are a very powerful practice when made to the Buddha. She should practice charity to all others. She should offer food to animals like ants or give water to those who need it with the purest attitude, in order to achieve enlightenment for others. If you can help her find a lottery ticket and winning numbers, that would also be good.
