Sunday, August 20th: Part C

So here, during this retreat, during the session meditate on lam-rim, so Venerable René lead, doing the session on lam-rim, going over the lam-rim. But what I would like during this retreat is practice as much as possible mindfulness. That not only retreat during the session, but retreat also in break time; break time not break time from Dharma, then that becomes problem; break time from Dharma, then it becomes problem. If you are having break from Dharma, then that means you’re not yet in the lower realm, not yet in the lower realm, but that means you are preparing for the lower realm.

When your actions do not become Dharma, that means non-virtue, so that means, you see, you haven’t born yet in lower realm, but you see, you’re making preparations to be born in the lower realms. You’re making passport, you’re making passport to go to lower realms, the air ticket. Then all your actions become non-virtue, so air ticket to go to lower realms.
So, and also break time from sitting meditation, should be also retreat mind, but the retreat, that is you see, mind in retreat. Of course, there’s body retreat, speech retreat, mind retreat, of course there is. So body retreat, speech retreat, that helps, that discipline that helps protect the mind, you know, body retreat, speech retreat, it helps the mind to be in retreat, makes easier.

If the body and speech are not in retreat, then mind, then a lot of distractions, then unable to be in retreat. Retreat away from, the first retreat, retreat away from non-virtuous thought, that’s the mind retreat, by retreating away from non-virtuous thought. So that means the mind continuously keeping in Dharma.

So, [long pause] tomorrow, you see, when one go out walk, so any people, any animals, birds, or insects, whatever you see, however, to practice mindfulness, here is bodhicitta. [very long pause]

Think, “From this person, from this insect, I have received all my numberless past happiness, present and all the future happiness, liberation, enlightenment.” Okay, so think to practice that mindfulness, the extensive kindness of that sentient being [pause]. So once you think the reason, then, once you know the reason, then that’s not necessary to think reason with everyone. If there’s need, you can think the reason [again?].

So all the past, present, future happiness, all the numberless past happiness, from beginningless rebirth, up to now, and then present, all the future happiness and liberation and full enlightenment, all this came from my good karma, virtue.

Then, that is action of Buddha. So Buddha has two actions. One is possessed, in the mental continuum, sentient beings. One is possessed by the Buddha themselves. So this is one. So your own virtue, that’s Buddha’s action. So that came from Buddha, Buddha came from bodhisattva, bodhisattva came from bodhicitta, bodhicitta came from great compassion, great compassion is generated by depending on the kindness of obscured, suffering, sentient beings, every single obscured, suffering, sentient being.

So therefore, all my every single comfort, all my three time happiness I receive by the kindness of each and every single sentient beings. So try to remember with the meditation, say, as you walk around all the, whomever you see, animals, or people, so that.

Then also think, at conclusion, see, then you see, think conclusion, see, to achieve enlightenment for that being, to free from oceans of samsaric suffering and bring to enlightenment, can make also that conclusion. Whether you can think with every being is good, but even just from time-to-time think that.

So here, when you think this, then, the thought comes to offer service. And then here, now, what service do you offer? The kindness or to benefit others? Okay. So then, you see, the best thing’s, you see, actualize lam-rim, okay, in your heart, so that, you see, that’s the answer, [pause] to practice Dharma.

So, to practice Dharma, one way, I explain like this, to practice Dharma, you see, here I would like to put this way, practice Dharma. So it means, you see, it means to practice Lesser Vehicle path, Lesser Vehicle, Paramitayana; Paramitayana is Mahayana Sutra, and the Mahayana Tantra. How? How? So, you practice renunciation from the Lesser Vehicle path, then bodhicitta, okay. Then, you see, this tantra practice, if you have taken great initiation, this tantra practice. So then generating the place, mandala; yourself, others, deity; so that’s the tantra practice.

The other one is Pratimoksha vow, and the lay, for the lay there’s a lay vow. Then for the Sangha, no question. Then there’s Bodhisattva vow, then Tantric vow, so, I’m going to practice Dharma, which comes in three, you see, three levels: Pratimoksha, the Lesser Vehicle, then the Great Vehicle is the Mahayana, sutra, the tantra; Paramitayana path, then the Mahayana tantra.

So one way to saying that I’m going to practice, so pratimoksha vow, lay, Sangha is higher ordination. So lay vow, whatever number of lay vows that one has taken, so then bodhisattva vow, then if one has taken tantra initiation, great initiation, tantric vow. So that’s one example. So one way to think, to practice Dharma. So you can think both, this way and also renunciation, bodhicitta, the practice pure appearance, mental appearance.

So here, when you make conclusion to practice Dharma, meditate on lam-rim, practice Dharma, not just only transform the mind in virtue, but here Dharma means only transforming the mind, virtue, but here, that. So then that makes you to take more responsibility for sentient beings.

So I think I stop here.

So different days, do different mindfulness, so that’s very good.

So, I mean, can divide, you see, how many days lam-rim, you can do, first day like, guru devotion, mindfulness, hold that whole day. Then next day, you see, renunciation to this life, impermanence, perfect human rebirth, all that, relate everything your life, what you see, everything, you know, to realize how this is precious, and also, you know, impermanence. One day, everything about precious human body, all this, then next day impermanence, everything, but everything, you see people, and yourself, the trees, the wind blowing, and leaves falling down, the whole thing impermanence, everything, nature of impermanence, doing like this is also very effective, everything relate to the impermanence.

So this is an idea, I mean, you can do like that, how many days remembering, so, it’s very very good, and then emptiness, so like that, if it’s two days. If it’s three days, you know, one day renunciation, one day, so, the mindfulness, break time, that’s very, very good, say, much more meaningful, say, become cause to achieve renunciation of samsara and achieve liberation, to be free from samsara, and to achieve liberation, to achieve enlightenment.

Then, you see, then, you know, doing meditation or watching breath, even your mind is not distracted, watching breath or even mind watching mind, whatever, even much deeper like that, you know, mindfulness walking but, there’s no motivation, renunciation of samsara, nothing. Even without renunciation, without motivation, renunciation, samsara, you see, without bodhicitta, without right view, nothing, just paying attention walking, paying attention, I’m a student, paying attention. I’m stealing.

The thieves, they have a lot of attention, the terrorists, they need a lot of awareness, terrorists, they need a lot of awareness, thief, the right time, how to do exact, so much skill they need, a lot of awareness, a lot of mindfulness there, but there’s no renunciation, no right view. There’s no renunciation, no right view, no emptiness while they’re stealing. While they’re stealing, there’s no emptiness meditation. While the terrorists harming, there’s no emptiness meditation there.

So, anyway, so if you don’t have lam-rim, if you don’t have motivation lam-rim, no lam-rim, these three, then you see, difficult to say become Dharma, difficult to say become virtue, how much life, even you spend whole life, many years doing those meditation without lam-rim, without motivation lam-rim.

Even watching the mind watching the mind, if there’s no lam-rim, if there’s no renunciation, no right view, no bodhicitta, nothing, difficult even, there’s no renunciation to this life, no detachment to this life, no motivation, then doesn’t become even Dharma, so like that.
So here, here, mindfulness, lam-rim, here, it’s great, it’s even yum yum, it’s yum yum, yum yum.

[Cuts into dedication prayers]

Due to all the past, present, future merits collected by me, three time merits collected by others, may those the bodhicitta be generated in the hearts of all the sentient beings, especially in the hearts of all the leaders of this world, [pause] especially in the hearts of those who are called terrorists or anyone young, old, those who have harmful thoughts to harm the world, from other sentient beings, may the bodhicitta be given a place in their hearts, instead of harmful thoughts, [very long pause], generate bodhicitta without delay even a second. In whose heart bodhicitta is generated, may it be increased.

That we have great opportunity to, from your side, say, opportunity to learn Dharma, even understand Dharma that you have, every virtue that you collect, cause for happiness up to enlightenment, and especially opportunity to meditate on lam-rim, to attain lam-rim realizations, from my side, then to, say, collect merit in explaining, I have all this by kindness of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. So dedicate our merits to have stable life, and all the holy wishes to be succeed immediately.

[Long-life prayer to His Holiness the Dalai Lama]

[long pause]

May they find faith in the refuge, karma, and actualize renunciation, bodhicitta in their heart. May all their wishes be succeed immediately, and wishes for all the happiness be succeed immediately. May they achieve enlightenment as quick as possible. [pause]

So anybody who get angry to me, who scold me, or abuse or whatever harm or help, whatever they do, but in return, but it only become most beneficial for them, [pause] quickest path for them to achieve enlightenment, method fulfilling all their wishes for happiness.

Due to all the past, present, future merits collected by me, three time merits collected by others, may the 500-feet Maitreya statue be completed, constructed, completed as quick as possible, abide in this world until Maitreya Buddha descends, and be most beneficial for sentient beings, cause to purify defilements and collect extensive merits in sentient beings in this world, and cause them to actualize bodhicitta, and bring perfect peace and happiness in this world, and bring them to enlightenment as quick as possible.

As well as offering service to the monasteries, the main place in this world, learning the most depth, the most extensive Dharma in order to serve the Sangha in this organization, then build monasteries in different parts of the world, and spread Dharma for sentient beings, as well as various holy objects, built in different parts of the world, as well as the quickest way to purify sentient beings, to bring to enlightenment, social service in different parts of the world, and may it cause to generate compassion in the hearts of all sentient beings, and may all the centers to be the most beneficial to sentient beings, cause them to find faith the Dharma, and actualize loving kindness, compassion, bodhicitta in their hearts, and spread Lama Tsongkhapa’s complete teaching in the hearts of all sentient beings, pure teaching of Lama Tsongkhapa in the hearts of all sentient beings, and bring them to enlightenment as quick as possible.

And whatever projects they have, then, including Vajrapani, all the rest of the centers, then, whatever projects the center has, may it be, all those may it be actualized, succeed, as quick as possible, by receiving all the needs, all the fundings, all the rest of the projects, including Maitreya Project without delay even a second, so to bring this.

Due to all the past, present, future merits collected by oneself, three time merits collected by others, that which exists but which is empty, may the I who exists but who is empty, achieve Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s enlightenment, or whichever deity has, then, one practice, all relate to that, the Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s enlightenment, which exists but that which is empty, [pause] and lead all the sentient beings, who exist but who are empty from their own side, and bring to full enlightenment, Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s full enlightenment, which exists but which is empty from its own side, by myself alone, who exists but who is empty.

May Lama Je Tsongkhapa’s teachings, may it be spread in all the directions and may it be flourished forever in this world by completely actualizing in one’s heart and in the hearts of all the sentient beings, one’s own family members, in the hearts of all the students in this organization and those who are supporters, benefactors and as well as those who give up their lives to the organization, doing service to sentient beings and teachings of Buddha, in all their hearts as well as in the hearts of everyone in this world.
