Teachings from a Mani retreat held at the Institut Vajra Yogini, France, in May 2009.

Motivation for the Retreat

So now, sorry, it took time, it took time ?in that. So now, you see, how to say? Now then, of course, now then, the main reason here is not your happiness, not your happiness. For happiness of all sentient beings, whole, happiness of numberless hell beings, happiness of numberless hungry ghosts, happiness of numberless animals, happiness of numberless human beings, happiness of numberless suras and asuras, happiness of numberless intermediate state beings, you understand? We’re here for that. So not just you, one person, one liberate, not that. Here, the purpose of chanting OM MANI PADME HUM is for that, okay, for everybody, including, includes, when we say animals, includes every insect that you see in the road, ants, any worms, any insects that you see in the road when you’re walking, okay. Every session is for that. Every session is for every insect, I don’t know whether one likes every insects, but mosquitoes, snakes, those poisonous snakes.

I just remembered, I’ve seen one documentary, I don’t know which country, must be unbelievable hot, so hot country, I don’t know where. This is in America. This man who made this movie was a benefactor of Wisdom Publications, I don’t know whether he does benefact now, but before, I think when Wisdom moved in United States. So anyway, he made a documentary.

So, I think might be him. There’s a mountain, it’s red, the earth is kind of like red, it’s all dust, huge mountain, dust. Kind of like, must be very hot, red, kind of mountain. So there’s one creature, might be type of those, what do you call this? I think it’s two leg or four legs and tail, but it has special power. When it escapes, it goes through the mountain, not through the mountain, not that, but goes inside the earth. The mountain doesn’t have grass, just dust, I mean, the sand, but kind of reddish, like red rock, like that. So that creature goes very quickly inside, inside the earth. I don’t know how it goes, but, there’s no hole there, just goes [Rinpoche must be using His hands to try to show how this creature travels], I don’t know how it goes.

Then, from far, from far, there’s snake. This creature is similar color as the mountain, kind of reddish, like reddish rock, like that, because I think it must be living there, so…. Then the snake, the snake must be poisonous snake, the snake coming to eat, from some quite distance. The mountain is like this, but snake is, poisonous snake, you see, in the ground. Other snakes kind of touching the ground, but this poisonous snake looks like not touching the ground, it goes [trying to explain and describe with hands] kind of curved. So this snake look like not touching the mountain. So mountain is like this, so the snake kind of like this, it comes like this, but similar color, same color as mountain, and same as the other, they’re all three same color. So coming from quite some distance, to eat this animal. And this animal must feeling that, went straight inside the mountain. But there’s no hole there. I think it has some karma to go through, I think. So anyway, just remembered that. So anyway, what I’m saying? It’s just karma, the same color, must be living there, same place.

So anyway, what I’m saying? Oh yeah, so you see, includes everybody. If one like dogs, if one like dogs, then it includes all the dogs, what I’m saying is, here, when you chant OM MANI PADME HUM, these sessions, the practice, it includes all sentient beings. I’m saying, it includes all the dogs, if you like dogs, it includes all the dogs. Then, if you like pigs, it includes all the pigs, dogs and pigs.

Anyway, so every sentient being, nobody’s left out: every insect, every worm, nobody’s left out, not one tiniest insect you can see only through microscope, you can’t see with the eye, but nobody is left out. So this chanting OM MANI PADME HUM, everybody, to, numberless hell beings, experiencing most unimaginable suffering, hungry ghosts, and then animals, experiencing most unbearable suffering. Then, human beings, the suffering of pain, suffering of change, temporary samsaric pleasure which is nature only suffering, only nature of suffering. And these aggregates, nature of suffering, which is pervasive compounding suffering. So like that. Oceans of suffering of human beings. Then, suras, asuras, then numberless intermediate state beings, so it includes everybody. So every single OM MANI PADME HUM is for everybody, okay. So not only, everybody, but not only everybody in this world. There are numberless universes, there are numberless universes, scientifically mentioned and mentioned in Dharma, each universe has its own sun and moon, and eastern continent, southern continent, western continent, northern continent. Then, eight small continents, all that. So that’s complete. And then, you see, each one has its own lower realms, hell realms, hungry ghosts, animal realms, you see, so like that. Each universe has their lower realms, so like that. So then, there are numberless universes, okay.

So, not only the session, not only the session, not only the session, session do for others, but the rest of the life, rest of the eating food, sleeping, other things, for self, not like that. So this is the same, the other life is also same, for all sentient beings, okay.

So, just generally, brief, just to mention the purpose. So here, of course this what I mentioned before, of course, this is the basic one. Then we dedicate the, ?our reciting 100 million OM MANI PADME HUM’s for His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s long life, and to have stable life, all the holy wishes be succeed immediately. And that’s the most important thing. That’s the most important one because Buddhadharma exist in this world because of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. So because of that, we have met Buddhadharma. Because His Holiness exists, so, in this world, so because of that, Buddhadharma, complete Buddhadharma, the Tibetan Buddhism exists in this world now. Not stopped yet, not degenerated yet, not stopped yet. So because of that, because of that we have met Buddhism. Not only Lesser Vehicle, we have met the Great Vehicle, the Paramitayana path, the sutra, and also Great Vehicle, the Secret Mantra Vajrayana, so also that. So that’s solely by His Holiness’s kindness. That’s very clear. So if His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s not living in this world, they wouldn’t exist, and all these great monasteries wouldn’t exist, wouldn’t happen, and there wouldn’t be Buddhadharma spreading in the Western countries by receiving teachers, qualified teachers from those monasteries, particularly then, the FPMT, then from Lama Tsongkhapa’s tradition monasteries receiving qualified teachers, then, many sentient beings able to meet Buddhadharma, Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism, at the center, so which includes us.

And then we have opportunity, that’s why we have this unbelievable, unimaginable, unimaginable, unimaginable, unbelievable, it’s opportunity, unbelievable opportunity to achieve enlightenment, to follow the path to enlightenment, to listen, to learn, to listen, to reflect, and to meditate, this unbelievable opportunity we have, and so, sooner or later to achieve enlightenment, okay? And sooner or later, to be fully qualified to, even now, even now we are benefiting for sentient beings, but sooner or later we are fully qualified, without a single mistake, that we’re able to liberate the numberless sentient beings from each realm, from oceans of samsaric suffering, and bring them in full enlightenment. Sooner or later we will be able to do this. So this unbelievable opportunity having met Buddhism, that you have total freedom to liberate yourself from samsara, and you liberate numberless sentient beings from oceans of samsaric suffering, okay? Numberless sentient beings, others who are numberless sentient beings from oceans of samsaric suffering, that you’re able to do that, so this is solely by the kindness of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, that he’s living in this world, okay? So by that. So that’s hundred percent clear.

So, this is for His Holiness’s holy wishes to be succeed immediately, and especially, all the time also most important, but even now, it become so urgent, very, very urgent, now this time, this year, this is very urgent time.

And then, for the Tibetans to, the truth to be actualized, the truth, to be actualized, the total freedom, and Buddhadharma in Tibet, flourish, and then to happen more, to happen numberless buddhas, bodhisattvas, even more than how many happened in the past when Tibet was independent, okay. And in that way, Buddhism exist in the world, very stable, and flourish, and spread in all the directions. And all the sentient beings in this world, always have opportunity to meet Buddhadharma, to actualize, to achieve enlightenment, to be liberated from oceans of samsaric suffering and to achieve enlightenment, to always have the opportunity. So it’s for that.

And then all the, then, next, you see, all the rest of the countries, including China, and all the rest of the countries who have so much problems, so much suffering, so much problems, to have peace, and happiness, okay.

Then, you see, to pacify war, famine, and disease, torture, poverty, economic problems and dangers of fire, dangers of water, dangers of wind, dangers of earthquakes, so all these things happening, wherever it’s happening in this world, to be stopped immediately. And may nobody in this world to experience all these problems, forever.

So this, our retreat, this, taking Eight Mahayana Precepts, and every session, the various practices each session and chanting mantra, so all that, all this, everything’s all for this, okay? So that, then next one, so that includes also your family who passed away, for them to have good rebirth, to purify their negative karma, for them to have good rebirth, and then life to life to meet Dharma, practice Dharma, and achieve enlightenment. Not just only to be born a human being, or sura, asura, not that, but to meet Dharma. By meeting Dharma, by actualizing Dharma, then, you see, get higher and higher, better rebirth, then through that, for them to achieve full enlightenment quickly, so that’s any family members who passed away, okay. And even for those who are living, so this is your repaying their kindness. Should realize that, should count this retreat also, to repay kindness to your parents, those who are living and those who died already, so, okay, and your friends, anybody you want to, that particular person, friend, or somebody, you see, that you want to help and pray, so dedicate for that.

Then, the last thing, of course, then also please dedicate, all the success, all the projects in the FPMT, the social, so many [pause] so this, think, remember, think, this chanting OM MANI PADME HUM, the taking Eight Mahayana Precepts, what the sessions, the different meditation practices in one session, all that, the antidote to the economical problems going down, that. [pause] The means of collecting extensive merit, the Seven Limb Practice, and purification and increasing merits, all that, so, it’s, these are antidote for the, [pause] to improve, the economic problems going down, so to improve, to pacify.

So then, of course, [pause] that, then, the next, to help for all, which helps for all of that. Most important is to develop your compassion. So this is for that. This retreat is for that. Every OM MANI PADME HUM is for that, to develop your compassion to each and every single sentient being: each and every single hell being, hungry ghost, animal, human being, sura, asura, intermediate state, okay. That includes your family, brothers, sisters, whatever, aunties, and uncles, okay, so whatever names there are. Cousins, nephew, what else? Nieces, oh, I left out nieces! I left out nieces. So anyway, so, to develop compassion towards every single sentient being, every single sentient being, oh, this is for that. That is the most important success, the most important success in the life, to develop compassion. What pleases most the numberless buddhas and bodhisattvas, gurus, buddhas, bodhisattvas, okay, what pleases them the most: develop compassion, to develop compassion to each and every single sentient being. So this is for that.

What’s the time now? [Ven. Dondrub: A quarter past seven, Rinpoche.] Oh, really? Dinner time? So I think I stop here. Okay. I think it went beyond dinner time.

So I’m happy to meet, [pause] that many old students, here, gathered here, so I’m very happy to meet and to do practice together. So I offer billion, zillion, million, oh no, millions coming back, million, billion, zillion, trillion thanks. Okay. Great. So thank you very much. So please enjoy, okay? Offer tsog to your stomach. Okay, thank you.

[Students offer a short mandala offering.]

Maybe, maybe that can be hold outside so when you go through, there’s, those who haven’t received, especially the long-life initiation that was done here some days ago, so there’s still long-life nectar left. It is mixed with the, not only blessed, but mixed with, say, the very precious pill that one young lady came from Tibet, who is dakini, well, I think you saw picture on the Mandala Magazine one time, recent time. So she goes to Padmasambhava’s, the Maratika, this amazing cave where Padmasambhava achieved immortal realization. This is in Nepal, but near India, but in Nepal. I only succeed going there last year. But I planned to go there for many years, but one time, we got a Russian helicopter, about to go, but then my brother, he stopped, because that is the main place of Maoists, that’s the main place of Maoists, not mouse, not this mouse, has a small tail, not that one, not that mouse. The Maoists, this is the main place of Maoists, so he thought very dangerous, so he said don’t go.

So the last time, went there, with one or two monks from Kopan, and then two students, two Westerners, Frances and another one who works for, I don’t know, I think English person, who works in Nepal.

So it’s amazing, amazing, the holy air, the mountains, just, no other, unbelievable, expression, can’t imagine. I mean, that’s one view, but probably holy beings who have a purified mind would see probably different way.

So, she comes there to do retreat, for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, retreat for long life for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, two months, in the past. So she saw Buddha Amitayus. She was doing a long-life retreat for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, for His Holiness to have long life, so she saw, actual Buddha Amitayus during those retreats for several weeks, and these pills are made during that, these pills are blessed during that times.

So then there’s Chobgye Trichen Rinpoche from whom I received many initiations, who was the head of the Sakya, the, [pause] Sakya has different, Nor and, I think there are three different, Nalendra, in Tibet there’s called Nalendra Monastery. Chobgye Trichen Rinpoche who is the guru of His Holiness Sakya Trizin, and from whom His Holiness the Dalai Lama has received the Sakya Lam Dre teachings, and from whom I received many initiations, this extremely rare initiation. Now, no Gelugpa lamas has complete, could not find one Gelugpa lama who has complete initiation of this, there’s probably hundreds, something around, the initiation. One Gelugpa lama, Kyabje ?Rato Rinpoche, one very high lama, he had, but nobody request him, he passed away. So nobody, it seems by searching, nobody has complete. So, we, during Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche’s time, requested Rinpoche, Kirti Tsenshab to spread in the Gelug, but we didn’t finish that initiation, so last year we received from His Holiness Sakya Trizin again from the beginning, that initiation. Then the next year, again there will be the continuation of that initiation, but not sure, not sure maybe finish that time, but probably mean another year.

So anyway, so His Holiness Chobgye Trichen Rinpoche’s inner offering nectar pill, which Kyabje Pabongka highly recommend, when you do retreat, highest tantra retreat, either you should have nectar pill from, nectar pill came from Panchen Rinpoche which has lineage of Panchen Rinpoche. This Panchen Rinpoche is the past, way back Panchen Losang Chokyi Gyaltsen, who composed the Guru Puja, or Gyelwa Ensapa. Gyelwa Ensapa is the first incarnation of Panchen Lama, first incarnation is Gyelwa, so Gyelwa Ensapa achieved rainbow body, something like that and then the attendant grabbed, before the holy body disappeared, grabbed, there’s some tiny bit whatever he able to grab, with his fingers, so then that made pill. That’s one story.

But also, Panchen Losang Chokyi Gyaltsen made nectar pill, and the flames came, the signs that it is blessed, signs, it happened the signs, fire blazing coming from the pill when you’re blessing. So happened those signs. So either having that lineage, or pills from Sakya, so lineage of Sakya, so you need. So this is what, those pills contains so many hundreds of relics, unbelievable those ancient great yogis, and present, those great yogis, high lamas, so like that. So, that, then also from Padmasambhava, I think, the nectar pills, mixed. So, I think, especially those who haven’t received, who were not here for the long-life initiation, so you could take some, the long life. The other one is pill. So those pills mixed, supposed to be mixed with both. So like that.

So that’s it. Then see what happens next! Okay, thank you. Thank you so much.
