Day Four: Benefits of Circumambulation Part B

So the mother is like the preliminary, devotion is like the preliminary, like the mother, so all the generations come, so all the qualities come and protect. The devotion is like, depa, depa, [Tibetan] so devotion is like a city. Devotion signifies like a city, from where so many collections of goodness comes. So in the city you can, there’s the material objects, so many things you can find for comfort, various foods that you like or various material possessions or house or, so much you can find from the city, like that, devotion is like that. Then, from there all the realizations come, qualities come, various qualities, realizations, come.

And then, [pause] there are several pages, in the sutra, Konchog ?Dala, I don’t remember, so some are commonly used in the lam-rim. Then the devotion is like the leg. If you have leg, then you can go to the place, we can go to the places where we wish to be. And like that, devotion, if you have devotion, then you can achieve liberation, enlightenment, as well as pure land, all those, buddha’s pure land where you can become enlightened, those things, where you never have to be reborn in the lower realms, since from that time. So you can reach wherever you wish, like the leg. The hand and leg, the leg. Not the lake, not the water lake.

[Tibetan] So like, devotion is like, so if you have material possessions, if you have money then you can get whatever you want. So like that, if you have devotion, then same, you can achieve all the happiness, realizations. Devotion is like the treasure, so best wealth, like the best wealth, best treasure. And devotion is like the boat you cross the ocean. And there it’s mentioned anyway. So there are many things explained there, benefits of the devotion, quality of devotion.

So however, one who has devotion, one who has great devotion to Buddha, Dharma, Sangha. Not just devotion to anything, but devotion to Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, the guru, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, that person is the most lucky person, most fortunate person, whether there’s intellect or no intellect. But then there can be, you can have a lot of intellect, you can be a great scholar but no faith. You can be a great scholar but no faith at all. So in order to have faith to guru, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, you have to have a lot of merit. That person is a very lucky person, a very rich person, a very lucky person, so you have to have a lot of merit in order to have faith to guru, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha. So, without faith, I mean there are people are great scholars, have very extensive knowledge, can explain well but there’s no faith. So then you can’t have realization, can’t really progress your mind.

So, if one has devotion then in the daily life, day and night, always, by the way always you create good karma, somehow in your life, without effort.

So abandon the , the first benefit, having circumambulated the stupa abandons the eight states which has no freedom. So hell, hungry ghost, animal, barbarian, long-life god, heretical being, then the place where Buddha hasn’t descended, then there’s no, if Buddha hasn’t descended, place where Buddha hasn’t, Buddha doesn’t descend then there’s no Dharma, no opportunity to practice Dharma. Then the next one is a fool, mentally a fool, then can’t learn Dharma, can’t learn words of Dharma, meanings, cannot learn. So having done circumambulation to the stupa, that abandons the eight state that which have no freedom to practice Dharma, okay.

So that, you have to understand, circumambulation purifies the negative karmas, which causes to reincarnate these eight states, which has no freedom to practice Dharma. It purifies the negative karma, then that’s how then you become free, that’s how you abandon or free from these eight states which has no freedom to practice Dharma. So you understand the, so that’s so important. The very first benefit here I’m reading, it’s so important. I mean we understand, if we don’t understand, if you don’t understand Dharma, then you wouldn’t know the importance of this, to not be reborn these eight states which has no freedom to practice Dharma. You wouldn’t feel how this is most urgency to be free from these, to not be reborn these eight states. So more we learn Dharma then we know more how this is so important, more we learn about karma. So this is, you can see this is something that, this is something we need to achieve right now. Otherwise, because death can happen any day, in any moment death can happen, so therefore, to make sure we don’t get reborn these eight states, it’s the first thing. It’s the first thing to be achieved, it’s the thing to be achieved right now. So, I guess, you have to be at the stupa right now.

Without delay even a second.

So the next one, sorry, have to go to the next one. Then, you will achieve [Tibetan], so the person who circumambulates will achieve long life, deva’s, human being’s. So you will be born a deva or human being and you will have a long life.

[Tibetan] So you won’t receive harm from flesh-eaters, the hungry ghosts, smell-eaters, those, you won’t receive harm from them, flesh-eaters and smell-eaters, those spirits. The cannibals. So could be also harmful creatures.

[Tibetan] So even for a hundred eons the person who circumambulates a stupa, even for hundreds of eons you won’t experience blindness and the rheumatism, the legs or the hands, what do you call? Huh? [Ven. Lektsog: Arthritis.] Arthritis, yeah. You won’t experience arthritis, the blindness, how do you call? Shar, not only eye but shar means also for the legs and hands, so the arthritis, so those, yeah, all those sicknesses, those problems, you won’t experience, for hundreds of eons you won’t experience.

[Tibetan] By having circumambulated the stupa, you will achieve perfect power and perseverances and also no laziness. You will [Tibetan], I guess, extremely quick attainment, I think.

[Tibetan] So by having circumambulated the stupa then you will achieve six clairvoyance, six types of clairvoyance. The five clairvoyance, as I mentioned last night, the same also in the Hindu religion so also you achieve five clairvoyance, those are common, you see, those are very common ones, I think. The sixth one is clairvoyance without delusion, that’s only, that’s a special one from, it’s only from, by only practicing Buddhadharma, by attaining the path, by achieving arya path, I think.

Then, I don’t remember clearly now, so clairvoyance to see past and future lives, yours and others. Clairvoyance to see very distant, like from here you can see Tibet or other countries, from far you can see things. Then, the clairvoyance, why you suffer like this is because in the past you have created such-and-such karma, why you have success like this, because in the past you have done such-and-such. Clairvoyance like that. But of course subtle, but of course understanding subtle karma is only Buddha, so that means only by completing the whole path to enlightenment, understanding subtle karma, like that, is only Buddha’s qualities.

So, in order to be able benefit for sentient beings, then if you have clairvoyance then much easier to benefit for sentient beings because then you can see what benefits to them, what doesn’t benefit to them, what fits, so you have all this, you can see all these things so it’s, so much less mistake you make so things are more beneficial to others. So, for example, even in business you need clairvoyance so you can, by seeing the future, near future, the profit and loss, whatever, economically whatever happens, you can see all those things, even in business life you need clairvoyance, so then there’s a lot of protection, you know what’s going to happen so you have a lot of protection. Then you don’t get failed in your business, so much more safe.

Even the doctor, there’s need clairvoyance so that you don’t make mistakes when you diagnose sickness. There are many sicknesses that you’re not aware, that that’s not explained from the book and there’s many sicknesses these days don’t follow the book, originally what is explained, doesn’t follow, doesn’t, yeah, so diagnosis such a degenerated time, even in Tibetan texts, what, yeah, what is written so it doesn’t go according to that. So therefore, you have to have some other ways to understand, besides texts you have to have some other ways to understand all those sicknesses. So Padmasambhava explained this in degenerated time the people who are sick, their diagnosis they change. So then they asked what to do, then Padmasambhava explained do this, do this, do this, explained the methods how to achieve clairvoyance, that to be able to help sick people, to do, such as, there may be many other things but such as Medicine Buddha retreat and then, so when you see the, either the clairvoyance understanding of the, what sickness the person has comes within you or, this is without learning at all, without even doing study, the normal procedure, study, so you get understanding in your heart when you see the patient. Or, then, other one is the goddesses they tell you from behind. Or the next one is, patient you’re going to meet tomorrow then tonight you get in a dreams, then what medicine, what sickness the person has, what medicine to be given. So anyway, to not make mistakes and to really benefit, so also even the doctors need clairvoyance.

So even, yeah, I guess, even in the life of relationship, you need clairvoyance. So that you don’t suffer. I guess, I think in every aspect of life I think you need clairvoyance, because you don’t see the future then you get in trouble. Even in the political life you need, there definitely you need clairvoyance, otherwise you make big mistakes, so even politically, so yeah, this everywhere you need. So anyway, no question, then no question about, of course if there’s clairvoyance also one make less mistakes, even [pause] less mistakes in spreading Dharma if one has.

So the best quality clairvoyance is that, after having achieved shamatha, calm abiding meditation, after completing that meditation then that’s the most reliable clairvoyance so as Lama Atisha explained in The Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment, so after achieving calm abiding, shamatha, then achieve clairvoyance and so then you’re able to do better work for sentient beings. So I asked Kyabje Chöden Rinpoche about it, so Rinpoche said, You think of that object again and again, whatever you have to discover, so you think of that object again and again, then you see, able to see. So, that, so I guess, Rinpoche’s talking from his own experience, that’s how ?he’s able to see things, the clairvoyance.

Then, by having circumambulated the stupa then able to abandon all the delusions and you achieve the arhat, having destroyed the enemy, one who has destroyed the enemy, that’s inner enemy not outside enemy, inner enemy. The great miracle, who has great miracle power, arhat, who has great miracle power, so achieve that.

Then, next one, by having circumambulated the stupa, in the world you will achieve the Tathagata who is adorned with the holy signs, who has golden color holy body. The Buddha, you see, you will achieve Buddha, that which has golden color and adorned with the holy signs, exemplifications, so all those, thirty-two holy signs and eighty holy exemplifications, so all those signs of Buddha.

And then next benefit, from Sutra of Chenrezig, Compassion Buddha, Compassion Eye-looking Buddha, from that sutra, who circumambulated to the stupa of the savior of the world, in all the lifetimes [Tibetan], in all the lifetimes that person engages in the bodhisattva’s deeds and during that time the person will have always conscientiousness and wisdom, as well as wisdom, and will have merit, no fear. [Tibetan] By having circumambulated the stupa, in all the lifetimes, you will receive offerings from devas, nagas, nö-jin, [pause] so I’m not sure, nö-jin it looks like harm-giver, but not necessarily in the meaning like that. So anyway, the word itself could be “harm-giver” but I think it depends on, for the Dzambhala’s, Dzambhala’s called nö-jin and maybe also Namthotse, called nö-jin, so I guess nö is poverty caused by miserliness, things like that. Then, eliminate poverty, so the harm is related to the poverty, miserliness, then giving, what is given is the relieving from poverty, so might be like that when you relate to Dzambhala and nö-jin is called also those, I think, also Namthotse, the protector of morality. But then there’s other devas who are harm-givers.

It says here you will receive offerings from devas, nagas, harm-givers and cannibals. So even those other beings, I think it means they help you, they support you, I think.

Then by having circumambulated [Tibetan], so what it’s saying anyway, to read the whole Tibetan, that by having circumambulated the stupa, yeah, no this is the same line as before, the Buddha is saying, [Tibetan] As I have shown, no this is Sutra of Chenrezig, Compassion Buddha. So, maybe this came from Chenrezig, The person who circumambulates a stupa abandons eight states which has no freedom to practice Dharma, that I have shown and that person pleases the Light of the World, that means Buddha, pleases the Light of the World. Then this person respected again and again to that Buddha and hears the teachings of the emptiness, the selflessness. And that person does not become ignorant in Dharma, quickly receive devotion, become learned exactly according to the meaning of Dharma. Any human being who did circumambulation to the stupa of the Savior of the World, the admiration [Tibetan] so the admiration, that’s talking about the benefits, even it’s explained for ten million eons it cannot be finished explaining the benefits.

Then also Buddha explained to King Sangyal. [Tibetan] So, what it’s saying is that [pause], King Sangyal Buddha advised, Anyone with devotion who circumambulate the stupa of the Buddha, the stupa or the statue, it says, in their future lives the great enemy will be subdued, so that the delusions will be ceased, I think, what it means. Then, so that person becomes a container of all the good qualities. So that means tolerance and, opposite to anger, loving kindness and compassion, bodhicitta, all these pure minds. [Tibetan] Will have all the qualities, so all the realizations, one meaning.

Then, any human being with a happy mind, with a respectful manner, doing all these physical activities, the peerless stupa and the statues, so [Tibetan] so while that person is being in samsara, so in all the lives, from life to life, all the time we have so much happiness, all the wealth and so much of the needs the person obtains, so this is even while in samsara, so then no question about the ultimate, liberation, enlightenment. So it becomes supreme powerful practice of purification, purifying the defilements and stops the door, closes the door of the lower realms.

So, from the Kangyur, Buddha’s teaching Kangyur, from the ?Metog Se Pai Sum, from that text Piled the Flowers, Piled up, the Text Piled up Flowers, so from that, it’s mentioned that, even somebody with a happy mind even made a few steps, with a happy mind make a few steps and then you recite “sang gye chom den de la chag tsel lo,” I prostrate to Buddha Bhagawan or I prostrate to, anyway, to make it simple, the Buddha Bhagawan or just say the Tibetan, sang gye chom den de la chag tsel lo, like we say lama ton pa chom den de de zhin sheg pa dram chom pa yang dag par dzog pai sang gye…, same. So sang gye chom den de… at least it’s short. Sang gye chom den de la chag tsel lo, so with a happy mind then you go a few steps towards the holy object, a few steps, then say, sang gye chom den de la chag tsel lo. So even just merely by this, person who recites this with a happy mind towards Buddha, then make a few steps then recite sang gye chom den de la chag tsel lo, then that person, no opportunity at all, no possibility, “no opportunity” maybe that’s not quite correct, no possibility, related to the lower realms I don’t think you can use “opportunity,” opportunity to be born in the lower realms. So anyway, so no possibility , so this person who recites sang gye chom den de la chag tsel lo, then with a very happy mind to the Buddha and then making even a few steps towards the holy object, even that person for a hundred eons, a thousand eons, impossible, there’s no possibility to be born in the lower realms. Because, that is because of the power of the Buddha, Guru Shakyamuni Buddha, who has completed, who has ceased all the defilements, not only suffering but defilements, disturbing-thought obscuration, all the disturbing-thought obscuration, all the subtle defilements, who has completely ceased, whose mind is perfected in all the qualities of cessation, in all the qualities of realization, who as inconceivable qualities, who has inconceivable, limitless, unfathomable, unimaginable qualities, and all that quality that Buddha has it came from compassion. This came from compassion that generated to the sentient beings. So anyway, so why it’s so easy to purify negative karma, why it’s so easy to purify the negative karma so even just by reciting Buddha’s name, simply by reciting Buddha’s name like that, so because Buddha’s, the inconceivable qualities Buddha has, so due to that. So therefore it has definitely this benefit even just reciting the name with a happy mind toward Buddha devotional mind.

So it is mentioned in the Kangyur, there’s a section about the benefits of refuge, talking about the benefits of refuge. This is not Tibetan refuge or, this is not Tibetan refuge or what do you call it? You escape from your country and go to another country, not that refuge. Look for asylum. Not that refuge. But this is reliance to Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, this refuge. So benefit that Buddha explained in the refuge, so not that one, another text. Again Buddha explained that, Buddha said that, who recites this lama ton pa chom den de pel gyal wa sha kya thub pa la chag tsel lo, so that we recite normally, so [pause] I will check again but that become a little bit unclear. So just, Buddha said that those who recite this, I have no worry for them, Buddha said. I have no worry, I don’t have much worry for them. So that means, so I was asking some questions to, there’s some words which I don’t understand, so I checked with Kyabje Chöden Rinpoche, so Rinpoche saw this line, so Rinpoche, yeah, saw the line, I drew the attention to this point, where it says that Buddha said that who recite this, I have not much worry for them, it means it’s like this, by the kindness of Buddha, by the power of Buddha, by the, so it’s, it makes like the earth and the sky differences to the people who recite this, who rely upon Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, who recite this, even just this, it makes huge differences in the life, so much negative karma, unbelievable, purify. So I think as it’s mentioned there, as just I have mentioned now, so I think the conclusion is, even just from that, so you are saved from the lower realms for so many eons, eons, and then I think also quick way to, and also not only that, to be liberated from, definitely you will be liberated from samsara and in time to achieve enlightenment.

So I think that’s why Buddha’s saying, I don’t have much worry for them. I will check and make sure, so not completely clear, so the words, how the words….

So anyway, the conclusion, I mention some few drops of this, so here I’m talking to many of you, so this is just one time to talk to you so I think, but what you understand it has many benefits. So I think…. So this is something that, well, I went through several quotations from Buddha and from Chenrezig, so this is something that’s incredible, unbelievable thing for yourself to purify all the negative karmas collected from beginningless rebirth, direct your life towards enlightenment, only to go up towards enlightenment. Then also, and also it’s incredible benefit for sentient beings, for so many sentient beings, incredible benefit for sentient beings, so many sentient beings, not only human beings, even the animals, insects, all that, incredible, once this holy object is materialized or actualized, unbelievable benefit every day for sentient beings.

So if there’s one, there are three types of relics. Highest relic of the Buddha that is the mantras, the four mantras that which is written with gold on the life-tree that goes inside a stupa or a statue. So that’s the highest one. It’s called relic of the dharmakaya. The next relic is the Buddha’s hairs or the robes or any part of the holy body. Then next, the third relic is relic like mustard seed, that’s the third relic. So now, [pause] so the highest relic is these mantras, four mantras. The ?Sang wa rig kyi sung, the mantra of the secret relic, that’s the one, that is one. And the other one is the Stainless Beam Deity’s mantra. The other one is Stainless Pinnacle Deity’s mantra. The other one is ornaments of enlightenment. There are four.

So the first one, secret relic mantra, that is, that has just amazing, unbelievable, unbelievable, benefit and power what it has, Buddha explained in the text, in the Kangyur. So however, just mention one thing, that is, by having this mantra, even one inside the statue or stupa then if you, human beings or animals, insects, anyone who go around, anyone who went round then becomes circumambulation, went round, then it purifies, by just one time going round, it purifies negative karma to be reborn in all the eight hot hells, completely get purified. So, for example, if you’re born in the first hot hell, Being Alive Again and Again, then how many, relating to human years, the life span, life span is two great trak trik, and so, [pause] I don’t know, I think one great tre bum and six tre bum, so that’s the life span of the first, the very first hell beings, called Alive Again and Again. So, to understand these numbers, so relating to human years, one hundred thousand, so ten times one hundred thousand years that is one tre bum. Now ten tre bum is one great tre bum. Now ten great tre bum is one trak trik. So now ten trak trik is a great trak trik, so how many, so the life span of the very first hot hell being, Being Alive Again and Again, so two times the great trak trik, I don’t know, so have to calculate in English, you have to calculate in English and then you put a label.

So then, ten tre bum, one great tre bum. So that I already explained. So ten times 100 million is one tre bum and ten tre bum is one great tre bum, so one great tre bum, then six tre bum. So that much human year that is one life span of the first, the very first hot hell being, Being Alive Again and Again. So then the next, Black Line, the next hell, hot hell, double, their life span is double and the suffering is much, the suffering is double, greater, much hotter than the first one. So, the eight hot hells goes like this, life span longer and longer, the suffering of hot. So even one tiny fire spark from the hell realm, how hot it is, all the fire, all the power of the fire, fire in the human world, by putting all together, it is like air-conditioning , it’s like cool air, air-conditioning compared how it is, one tiny fire spark from the hell. So in teachings it said like snowfall, all the fire in the human world compared to one tiny fire spark from the hell, all the hot energy of the fire in the human world is like snowfall, snowflake or snowfall, snowflake might snowflake, so compared to even one tiny fire spark from the hot hell, so compared to that, so it’s like cool air. So you can imagine from that. [pause]
