The second part of a series of teachings given by Lama Zopa Rinpoche at Tara Institute in Melbourne, Australia in August 1991. This series formed the basis for the book Ultimate Healing, published by Wisdom Publications.

The Benefits of Problems, Continued

…then, if one is poor, then with much hardships one is able to succeed in the practice of the meditation, Dharma, one is able to obtain Dharma practice with hardships. What it is saying is, if one is wealthy, then there's so much distraction in the life, then that doesn't allow to meditate, then so many things to do in the life, as there is that much more sense pleasures, things like that, life is filled with so many distractions, so then does not find time to meditate, then difficult to achieve the realizations. So being poor, with hardships, one is able to obtains the Dharma practice or meditation. Then, all the past, present, future enlightened beings, all those yogis, all those great holy beings, all those who achieved the graduated path to enlightenment, all those with much hardships then they achieved the realizations, everyone with much hardships then they achieved the realizations.

Then, if one is happy, if one has comfort, so now here in this case, this, so previous one, even one is poor, no matter how poor it is, then by thinking in this way, then it gives inspiration, by thinking of the quality, the benefits of that, then one see that as pleasant or happiness and supporting to actualize the path. Now here, comfort, if one is not having happy life, not having comfort or not having happy life, one has miserable life, hard life, then how to transform this problem in happiness. So it is said in the teachings by this great meditators, Kadampas, so if one has much, if one is happy, in the sense of comfort, so if one, then, that means you are finishing your past merits, past good karma, the past positive actions, what you have created in the past, you are finishing, so it's like, somebody, for example, somebody buying a lot, somebody does a lot of shopping or buying property, buying so much materials, so that, actually that means finishing the money that was collected for many years, actually it means finishing the money. So similar here, finishing, that means in reality finishing the good karma, the positive actions created in the past, so becoming less and less. So when they become less and less, one is having luxury life or one has much comfort now, much enjoyment, but this is for only short time, because when the past good karma, the cause, the positive actions, is finished, then this one, this enjoyment is finished, then again the hard life, the poverty. Then, if one has miserable life, unhappy life, then this means you are finishing your past, the negative karma, the negative actions, the cause of the problems that you have created in the past, that you finishing, which means becoming less and less. So the more miserable life or unhappy life one experiences, the past negative karmas become less and less, the cause of the problems. So, that is the way how to look at the unhappy life, the miserable life into happiness, positive.

Then, also, it is said, the sicknesses, so if one has disease, then how to look at in happiness, positive [pause], so how to look at that positive, supporting to actualize the path, so that is, the sickness is the vacuum that cleans the garbage, cleans the room. I don't think those meditators they have vacuum in the hermitage [RL], in Tibet, in the hermitage, I don't think they have electricity to use the vacuum, but they said broom. However, sicknesses are the vacuum cleaning away the obscurations, negative karmas, obscurations and negative actions. So, already mentioned before, when one has miserable life, that means finishing the past negative actions, the cause of the problems, so can relate to that, same, can relate to that, experiencing sicknesses means purifying, so finishing all the past negative actions finishing now.

That, and also like this, when we use the disease, by using the sicknesses to develop loving kindness and compassion for other sentient beings and to develop bodhicitta, the altruism cherishing other sentient beings, this root of the full enlightenment, then, so when we, also we use the sicknesses to meditate on the ultimate nature of the sicknesses, to realize, to concentrate the ultimate nature of the sicknesses. So, realizing the ultimate nature of the I, that wisdom cuts off, that wisdom eliminates the root of all the problems, the root of the while entire suffering, the ignorance not knowing the nature of the I, so that is extremely important, realizing the ultimate nature of the I. So same thing, so sicknesses, by using the sicknesses as to meditate the ultimate nature of the sicknesses, so using the sicknesses especially to develop bodhicitta, the altruism cherishing other sentient beings, then, to meditate on, so this previous one is meditating on the methods, now here, the path method, now here meditating on the wisdom, to realize the ultimate nature of the sicknesses, to concentrate on that, so meditating on the path, the wisdom.

So this way, for example, using the sicknesses to meditate on bodhicitta, as I mentioned already, the second day of the course, so rather experiencing the sicknesses, however, while one has to go through this then using the sicknesses to practice, to develop the ultimate good heart, the altruism, How? Then thinking, as I mentioned the other day that, experiencing this disease on behalf of all those who have, numberless of them who have similar problems, then all the rest who have disease, then all the rest who have obscurations, who have problems, so whatever sicknesses one has, heavy or small or whatever type of sickness one has, then meanwhile, while one has to go through this, then make it extensively beneficial. Experience this on behalf of all the sentient beings, by thinking I'm experiencing all sentient beings suffering, all their disease, all the problems, thinking that one has received all the sentient beings, those same disease, then all the other sicknesses and all the sufferings, by thinking one has received and one is experiencing for them and let them to be free from all the sufferings and causes, and also free from all the obscurations, to have peerless happiness, full enlightenment.

So however, as one prayed to be able to serve others, to be able to experience others' problems by me and may they experience my happiness as I have prayed in the past, so generating a wish like this, so now it happened to me. So most of the time, so frequently, again and again, each time when the thought of sicknesses comes, each time when the thought, Oh, I have this problem [snaps fingers], each time this thought comes, rather using it to be depressed or to create more problems, then each time the thought of sicknesses, the problem comes, then immediately think, quickly think, I am experiencing this one behalf of all sentient beings, by thinking sickness is all sentient beings' sicknesses, all the sufferings, I am experiencing for them.

So this way, it becomes extremely powerful practice, very brave, extremely brave practice, the exchanging oneself for others, renouncing oneself, cherishing other sentient beings, giving one's own happiness to all other beings and experiencing all others' disease, all the sufferings. So, using the disease to generate bodhicitta, to develop bodhicitta, the ultimate good heart, altruism, renouncing oneself, cherishing other sentient beings, so using the sicknesses, with this meditation, the bodhicitta. So each time when one does this, I am experiencing this on behalf of all sentient beings, each time, day and night, as the time goes, each time as one remembers this, each time the thought of sickness comes, Oh, I have this problem, each time the thought of this comes, then immediately thinking I am experiencing this on behalf of all sentient beings, thinking this is sicknesses of all sentient beings, all those who have cancer, all those who have AIDS, all those who have this, all those who have that, then all the rest of the diseases, all the sufferings. So then, this is all sentient beings' suffering that I have received so I am experiencing for them.

Rather thinking I am experiencing this problem, rather thinking there's a problem for me, rather thinking that way, then experiencing the problem for others. So that is the heart practice, that is the main one, that is the very essential one to think day and night, time to time, then especially each time when the thought comes, thought I have this problem, then if one can remember that at that time then it become incredible practice. So each time when we think, we use the sicknesses for practicing bodhicitta like this, it accumulates infinite merit each time and each time the experiencing the sicknesses for other sentient beings it becomes unbelievable purification. So depending how strongly you feel this from the heart, sincerely how much one feel this, experiencing this for others, depending on how strongly one feel from the heart, so, so many lifetimes, hundreds, thousands, billions, inconceivable, so much obscurations get purified. So, because the sentient beings for whom you are experiencing suffering is numberless, so therefore numberless merit and it becomes inconceivable purifying not only the cause of disease, purifying the cause of all other problems, all the obstacles to achieve, purifying all the obscurations that, all other problems, then obstacles to achieve enlightenment, so, so much get purified. [snaps fingers] Each time when we think this. So each time when we think this brings closer and closer to the ultimate happiness, to the highest, full enlightenment.

So, more details on this point, which is the most important, the essential, the very heart of the healing practice, which is even more important than visualizing the deity and light coming, this one is most important than any of those other meditations. So however, more details tomorrow on this.

So, I think that's all, so anyway, the two verses, suffering is the blessings of the guru, the suffering is the manifestation of the emptiness. So last two verses like this. These are meditation subjects, when there's a miserable life, difficult life then to think, whether it's sicknesses or whatever it is, whenever there's a hard life, to think, to meditate in this way, it's the blessings of the guru, one's own virtuous friend, which means the guru is purifying one's own negative karma, all the obscurations, the obstacles to actualize the path. So, one is having difficulties of life, while one is working for other sentient beings, which is the advice of the guru, while one is retreating, one is having sicknesses, many difficulties, while one is studying Dharma, many difficulties happening, many problems happening, so then recognizing all these are blessings of the guru. So one is doing something, trying something what the guru advised, so one is having a lot of difficulties, going through a lot of problems, sicknesses and so forth, so this is blessing of the guru, by purifying all the obstacles.

So then the other one is the suffering is manifestations of emptiness. So, that can be mentioned tomorrow. So again I spoke a long time.

So, please dedicate, so due to all the past, present, future positive actions that I have done, and done by others, may the altruism which is the source of all the happiness, for oneself, for all the living beings, may this be generated within my mind, in the minds of others, those who have, may it be developed. [long pause]

Due to all these past, present, future positive actions, may the, may I achieve the highest, the full enlightenment, and lead everyone to this state as quick as possible. [pause]

Due to all these positive actions, may any sentient being who hears me, who touches me, who remembers me, who talks about me, who thinks about me, may they never be reborn in the lower realms again, in the hell, narak, animals, may they never be reborn from that time and may all their disease, spirit harms, negative karmas, obscurations, may they be completely free immediately from these, by that, as soon as they see me, touch me, remember me, talking to me, by thinking of me, and then not just that, to quickly become enlightened. [pause]
