Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave this commentary and partial oral transmission of the Sutra of Golden Light at Maitripa College, Portland, Oregon, USA, over two days, November 2-3, 2007. Note that the first three audio files contain introductory teachings and the oral transmission commences in Chapter Four.

7. How to Collect Unimaginable Great Merit

[Protector Prayers, then Rinpoche resumes the oral transmission of the Golden Light Sutra]

So he’s talking about here, requesting to turn Dharma wheel has greater merits than somebody offer great thousand three thousand galaxies, that many universes fill up with the seven precious jewels—diamond, gold, silver, so forth all that—then you offer to the buddhas. I mean that much, I mean that much offering to great thousand three thousand galaxies, fill up with the gold, diamond, like this, seven precious jewels.

Even if you offer one flower or one single rice to a statue of Buddha, painting of Buddha, stupa, or even visualize this, if there’s no holy object, but visualize, even you offer one single grain or one tiny flower, the merit is like unimaginable. One single grain offering to a statue, having offered to a statue, stupa, scripture, or any other holy object, even visualized or if there’s nothing there, visualized statue, stupa, whatever. So in that merit, the benefit of the merit you get, how much is contained is that all the happiness that you experience from beginningless rebirth, like that much in the future, like that much from beginningless rebirth up to now, how much happiness get experienced, now that much in the future, so all contained in that.

Now on top of that, that talking about samsaric perfections, samsaric pleasure, success, now on top of that the liberation from samsara that benefit contains total cessation of the whole entire, the oceans of suffering of the hell, hungry ghosts, animal, human beings, sura, asura, intermediate state beings, total cessation of that by ceasing the cause of the karma and delusions, cause of the suffering which is the mental thing.

So you achieve, so with this benefit, you offer one grain, one grain, one rice, one grain to a statue of Buddha, stupa, scripture, or you visualized. So on top of that then enlightenment, the great liberation, full enlightenment, cessation of all the mistakes of mind, gross, not only gross but subtle, and defilements, and completion of all the qualities, all the realizations, so you achieve that, so that’s that contained in that benefit, offering one tiny flower, one grain, okay. After, so that means includes all the realizations, five paths to liberation, five paths, ten bhumis to enlightenment and all the tantric realizations, everything contained in that benefit, you offer one grain of rice, one small flower to a statue, stupa, or scripture, or even visualized, okay.

So then after you achieve enlightenment, then what you do is you liberate numberless sentient beings from the oceans of samsaric suffering and you with the whole path bring them to full enlightenment, numberless hell beings, hungry ghosts, animal, human beings, sura, asura, numberless in each realm, so you bring everyone, every single sentient being to full enlightenment. So that time, when that happens, then this one tiny grain, flower offered to statue, or stupa, or scripture of Buddha, no question actual living Buddha, even visualized one, only that time then the benefit, then the merits offering this small grain, one tiny flower, something little, very tiny one, then that time when you achieve enlightenment, when you enlightened, when you have enlightened every single, brought every single sentient being to enlightenment, that time, only that time the benefit is complete.

So now here it’s talking about offering jewels. So now if you offer a plate of jewels to Buddha, how much merit you collect. Now you offer, now you offer your house filled with jewels, you offer to Buddha, unbelievable. Now you offer your whole area filled with jewels, you offer to Buddha, can’t imagine. Now you offer whole your country, filled with jewels, you offer Buddha. Now you offer whole this world filled with jewels, you offer to Buddha, can’t imagine.

Now it’s talking here now, one universe, all the whole entire, all these four continents—East, we are South continent—so all these worlds, so then this Mount Meru, sun, moon, all the whole entire universe, so like that. One, two, three, four thousand, then you count like that, that one thousand, then one, two, three, four thousand; then again count one, like that, one, two, three, four thousand. I got confused, got confused.

So one universe, like that one whole entire universe, sun, moon, everything complete, one, two, three, four, five, one thousand. So now you count like that, one, two, three, four, thousand. Then you count again, like that, one, two, three, four, thousand, so that’s called great thousand [Tibetan] great thousand of three thousand galaxies or universe.

So now here talking about all that many you fill up with, not only one universe, but that many great thousand three thousand galaxy or universe fill up with jewels, then you offer to Buddha. That, and then you request to turn Dharma wheel, request for teaching, this has far greater merit, many great merit, numberless, unimaginable merit than having made that much offering.

In the seven-limb practice, so more merit, as comes down more and more, more and more, and more merit it explains, than the turning the Dharma wheel, than requesting to have stable life, so it goes like that.

So here, this is where the Buddha is explaining. So here it talks about even much greater so, so universe, how many universe, how many universe equaling number of the, equaling number of the, equaling number of the subtle atoms, equaling number of the subtle atoms of the Pacific Ocean. Universe, how many universe equaling number of subtle atoms of the Pacific Ocean, that many universe, so it’s unbelievable. Even you think as ordinary sand grain, I mean even just one beach place sand grain, unbelievable number of sand grains. So here actually, the sand grains not ordinary sand grain, there’s seven extremely subtle atoms, [Tibetan] there’s seven, I think, maybe Abhidharmakosha, there’s seven extremely subtle atoms. So I saw in Pabongka’s, great enlightened Pabongka’s, in his notes, that he received teachings from [_?], on the Bodhicaryavatara talking about the benefits bodhicitta, so the use of the term [Tibetan], so the che-ma not ordinary sand, it’s this very extremely subtle atoms. So [Tibetan] is the physical ocean. Not every [Tibetan] depends on which context.

But like if you’re blessing the water that [_?] River Ganga, [Tibetan] so that is River Ganga, so [Tibetan] divine water. But that divine water interpretive meaning, definitive meaning. Interpretive meaning is the River Ganga in India, what Hindus believe. But the definitive meaning, that is highest tantric path. But here, when it talks benefit like bodhicitta benefits, we’re using the term that means, means this, I think might be same, so subtle atoms.

So universe equaling number of subtle atoms of the Pacific Ocean, that many universes, it’s unbelievable, unbelievable, fill up with the seven precious jewels then you offer the Buddhas, not one Buddha, Buddhas. Then requesting Buddha to turn Dharma wheel this far, numberless, unimaginable great merit you get. So just to give you an idea, get an idea in regards to business, in regards to the business, in regards to making business of merits, to get an idea what is greater.

So Buddha is saying that here he requested, so he was able to turn Dharma wheel recently by having requested by Indra, Brahma, so forth, all those, so he was able to benefit extensively to numberless sentient beings. And it’s saying the result of that, Buddha himself in the past requested all the buddhas to turn Dharma wheel. Then here requesting buddhas to abide, to not pass away, and to abide. So usually you request these the buddhas’ nirmanakaya aspect, gurus, buddhas’ nirmanakaya aspect request to have stable life, to not pass away.

So then Buddha said that because he made this request in past to buddhas, to abide, stable life, so and then that’s why from that he achieved Buddha, Shakyamuni Buddha achieved the qualities of Buddha, fulfills these qualities, and then ten power qualities, eighteen unmixed dharma and those Buddha’s qualities, four wisdom, four individual, perfect wisdom, great loving kindness, compassion, and achieved full enlightenment. And then also my Dharma last long time. So this is the result, what he achieved by requesting to have stable life, long life.

So therefore, we should understand that every day we practice seven limb, before the actual practice and before meditating on lam-rim, there’s preliminary, preparatory practice, actual body, then completion, the completion, dedication.

So preparatory practice, the seven limb, so therefore we should realize that every time when we do that seven-limb practice. So it comes seven-limb practice many times in sadhana before you engage in actual practice, so you should realize what each one is, what unbelievable, unbelievable merits, how important each practice, unbelievable merits collect with each one, inconceivable. So it cause to, it create, it create cause to achieve all these qualities of Buddha that is explained in Abhisamayalamkara, those subjects, those which study in the monastery for many years, so cause to achieve these qualities of Buddha. So unbelievable merits.

So this verse, you can see how important it is, why it comes so much at beginning of every practice, in sadhanas, seven-limb practice. So the seven-limb practice purify all the obstacles to have attainment, liberation, enlightenment. Then creates merits, increases merits, the dedication and the rejoicing makes to increase merits, so it creates, how it creates enlightenment.

Like the water swell, water swell all these conditions that makes to, makes help the seed to produce the stem, the plant, the stem from the seed, so all this together. Otherwise seed alone cannot produce a stem. The whole, the whole trunk, branches and flowers, fruits doesn’t happen, so it’s like that.

So Buddhist psychology it seems that the dedication it’s even more merit than to request to have a stable life, okay. The request to have stable life is more merit than to turn Dharma wheel, okay. So now the dedication even more merit, okay.

So now the Buddhist psychology that’s, so Buddha tells Sharipu: Anyone who, boys and girls, anybody who receives this text, who memorize this text, who learn meaning of this text, who read this text, who reveal to others, who reveal to others, so that person who receive this is, even receiving this text, Golden Light Sutra. So if somebody gives you, somebody gives, receive, even that, even who text. Besides reading, memorizing, understand the meaning, revealing to others, even somebody who receives text the merit is [Tibetan] so collect inconceivable, numberless great merits, then even more than even from the seven limb dedication which is much greater, numberless, unimaginable greater than requesting to turn, requesting to have stable life, which collects numberless greater, unimaginable merit than to turn Dharma wheel, then it goes back [_?] all that

So I think the main purpose explain the seven-limb practice, main purpose is that even receiving Golden Light Sutra text in the hand, even that—reading, memorizing—how this great, I mean, unimaginable, numberless great merit you receive, so that’s the main point, focus is to show us how this is so precious, even receiving, somebody give you, receiving, it’s unbelievable great merit, numberless, unimaginable, numberless greater merit then the previous one, see dedication [_?].

So there is similar, also Prajnaparamita teaching, Buddha’s teaching perfection of wisdom, so if you receive, like Vajra Cutter Sutra or [_?] or anything, to receive its unbelievable merit you collect.

So here, the Buddha name Tathagata, Buddha’s name, Rinchen Öthrö, the Radiating Jewel, which comes at the beginning part of Buddha’s name, after Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s name, so by reciting that you definitely, so by hearing, by hearing that Buddha’s name, and then definitely you will achieve the complete sorrowless state, so complete sorrowless state might be Buddha, might be I guess might be full enlightenment, not just lower nirvana.

So Buddha said, Buddha [programmed?] that the place where this sutra recited and developed, spread out, then the kings of that country, ministers, there’s four benefits it says. They respect each other among them, and among them they have a very dear feeling, like friend, like family, very dear friend each other. Then always the king able to, I guess always king gives, I’m not sure what it means, always the king gives, maybe gives freedom or however, maybe things what they want, what they wish, maybe king agree, or maybe like that, give permission. Then the Sangha who are in the virtuous training, Brahmas, and within the country, then the small country, so those like states, or however, different. So all those live pure, live pure morality, or pure discipline and seek holy Dharma, do not seek fameness, profit for themselves, then they’re always praise by others, then their reputation gets spread out and increases. They have long life and they have enjoy always happiness.

There’s mainly four; then there’s another four, another four, like that there’s many benefits they receive where this Golden Light Sutra is read in place.

So I was thinking maybe the Tibetan people in Tibet, if they read Golden Light Sutra by thinking in their heart His Holiness the Dalai Lama as their leader, so that gives so much power and protection.

So then maybe this way so His Holiness to continuously guide as the Tibetan people wish, His Holiness to be continuously to be the guide, the spiritual head and secure the life or however, as their leader, their religious and political head like before, then continuously to be their guide. So I thought if we recite, pray, then it might help with that to happen.

Then also, another one of the four is country where you recite this sutra, then people in the country, area will have no sicknesses, and increase, they become, it increase their happiness, their health, and wealth, also all the enjoyments, their needs, and the jewels, so forth. Whatever their needs, they will quickly accomplish, and their merits get increased, so they get all these benefits, the people in the country, in the area where the Golden Light Sutra is read. So there’s a lot of, as I was saying before, they receive so much benefit, people in the world, in the country, area they receive. So it’s so extremely precious and something that you can, so this, this so easiest to benefit, you can offer great, extensive benefit to the sentient beings.

So it says, as long as this profound sutra, this sutra lasts, then the Dharma of the thirty-seven, these aids to enlightenment, so these all the path exists, the teachings, all the path and then whenever this sutra doesn’t become existent, and then all this holy Dharma doesn’t exist, then it doesn’t, get, do not stay, it doesn’t exist in this world.

So then here Buddha explains, so this Golden Light Sutra, even one word, you recite even one word, even one verse, one chapter or the complete, so recite or memorize, or think complete, then also, so many sentient beings to, happiness for many sentient beings and for the benefit many sentient beings. For the purpose of many sentient beings, if you reveal this, then you will have limitless heaps of merits you collect. So hearing even one word, it says, even one line from the Guru, so unbelievable ­merit.

So now here this middle version, middle version Golden Light Sutra this book is produced from Tibet, produced very beautiful, convenient.

So I was thinking the Golden Light, Arya Sanghata Sutra to make more like this, this is very to put into pocket. Not pocket down there, which has same as toilet, not there, but easy to put in pocket, small, it’s easy for traveling.

I discussed with one student from Taiwan, she was going to ask this organization, they print book for free, which says it comes [_?], but if you come up with the money, funds, then they can print quickly. Otherwise you’re on a waiting list, he said. So what he said, [_?]

So maybe stop here. Sorry didn’t make it.

So according to this book, I stopped in the beginning of the mantra to protect the bodhisattva who are on the fifth bhumi, the mantra, beginning of that. So if there’s time tomorrow, then maybe not sure, but do a little bit. However this may also happen different parts, maybe different parts of United States, other countries also, so then maybe, so maybe that’s some time later, so see can do some more tomorrow, so like that.

The merits by listening, then reciting this, bodhicitta to be generated due to these merits, all the merits past, present, future, this bodhicitta, may it be generated in the hearts of, in the hearts of not only oneself, one’s family members, anybody who has connection to oneself, whatever connection, whichever connection, different type of connection, so not only generate in their heart, in the hearts of all the organizers, in the hearts of all the, in the hearts of all the students and so many different parts of the world who sacrifice their life, bear hardships to serving other sentient beings teachings of Buddha through the organization, so especially in all their hearts bodhicitta to be generated.

And those who rely upon me, whom I promise to pray, whose names given to me, in all their hearts bodhicitta to be generated. And in all the rest of the sentient beings in their hearts, in every single, in animals, insects bodhicitta to be generated, every single worms, so the tiniest insects, tiniest we can’t see, only through a microscope, so in all their hearts. And in the hearts of every single hell beings, who are most unimaginably suffering now, right now, numberless of them, the eight hot major, eight cold major, then the neighborhood, also everyone, they’re numberless whose karma is ripening now and you have to experience until the karma finishes, that’s most unbearable.

So those who abide in the hell realm, the heaviest one, the body is like same as the fire, same as firewood or fire, oneness with fire the body, and then one intermediate eon, one way you can discriminate that it is sentient being by the sound, these are the hell beings in the heaviest suffering of the hell realm, the inexhaustible hell tealm. So may the bodhicitta be generated in all their hearts. So those until karma finish nothing can do, there’s nobody to ask to help. So all those our, all those our mother, your mother, father, mother, the brother, sister, they all have been, so their suffering now most unbearable. So bodhicitta to be generated in every single their hearts and there’s the hungry ghosts, every single hungry ghost, they’re numberless; and every single human beings, suras, asuras, intermediate state.

So this means, when you’re praying, bodhicitta to be generated in the hearts of all sentient beings, then in the hearts of all sentient beings. When we pray like this it contains, it includes, it includes all these birds when we go outside, and all these birds small and big, and every single insects, worms in the plants, lives on, insects who live on, tiny insects who live on vegetables on the leaves, backside of the leaves, green color. Especially inside the flowers, according to the color of the flowers, if it’s red, red; orange, orange. However, all these tiny insects everywhere in the grass, when you walk on grass, then there’s so many insects jumping.

So what it includes, when you pray like this, generate bodhicitta in the hearts of all sentient beings, all this includes every single of those. When you go to the water in the ocean there’s all those numberless shells, numberless fish, everything like that, large animals, sharks, and tiniest ones, the creatures in the water, so everything’s included.

So all those animals when you see on TV, the Africa, all those cows, so much suffering. The monkeys could not find water, and all those zebras, those elephant, and all those who can’t find water, came from many, many, so many miles for water, can’t find, can’t find food, so includes everybody, every single, nobody’s left out.

So this prayer is great prayer, so from your cushion or wherever you are, you make prayer to everybody, it covers everybody. So it’s great prayer, pray that Buddha such this way praying for sentient beings, amazing, so everybody receives the prayer. So including sentient beings living in your body, they all receive your prayer to achieve enlightenment, to generate bodhicitta.

Jang chhub sem chhog rin po chhe

In the hearts of all the leaders.

Jang chhub sem chhog rin po chhe

[_?] in the hearts of all the harmful thoughts to harm the world, to harm other, whose hatred to others, to revenge, or to dislike due to different culture, different religion, all this. However bodhicitta to be generated in the hearts of all the religious, all the different teachers and religions, people, believers and nonbelievers in all their hearts, instead of harmful thoughts, instead of harmful thoughts, then bodhicitta to be generated to take place in their hearts. And please dedicate the merits from deep down, from your hearts.

Jang chhub sem chhog rin po chhe

And may the world then filled with perfect peace and happiness, everybody they live their life only benefiting each other, no harm, and whatever they do become cause of enlightenment.

And may this Golden Light Sutra be revealed, everybody get benefit in the world, everybody get opportunity to recite, to spread, and everybody come to meet, come to find, come know this Golden Light Sutra and recite, read, and write as well. So ultimate, then everybody, every sentient being to bring to achieve enlightenment as quick as possible.

Due to all the three time merits collected by me, collected by others, that which merely imputed by mind and merely imputed by mind, which exists, but merely imputed by mind, imputed. May the I who is, who exists but is mere imputation, achieve Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s enlightenment, which exists, but which is mere imputation, lead all the sentient beings who exist but who are mere imputation, merely labeled to that Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s enlightenment which exists, but which is only merely labeled by myself alone. Who exists, but who is also merely labeled.

So the reason why I changed exists, if I don’t mention that, then some people might get idea of when you see merely labeled it means it doesn’t exist; merely labeled is like dream. If the dream is same, merely labeled, but that doesn’t make it exist, so that prevent that wrong idea, wrong concept, so then it exists, exists but merely labeled, so it doesn’t become nihilism. Some people, the danger, you might think when you hear merely labeled, nihilism, it doesn’t exist, so need to protect that.

So that’s it. Otherwise, maybe then next time the last part.

So going to do preparation for the, the preparation, the reason this to do initiation without preparation or with preparation, but I thought to do preparation this time.
