3. Why We Need to Practice Dharma

[Rinpoche begins with chanting in Tibetan]

So just a few words. Even non-believer, even as non-believer, need to practice Dharma, need to practice meditation, need to practice Dharma. Even non-believer who doesn’t believe reincarnation, karma, or even no religion, not any religion, need to practice Dharma, need to practice meditation, because you want happiness don’t want suffering, don’t want to have problems in the life, because of that.

So even a person who believes only one life needs to still practice Dharma, reincarnation, since you want happiness. But if you looking for suffering, if you’re looking for suffering, what you wish is suffering, what you do not wish is happiness, then you don’t need to practice Dharma, you don’t need to practice meditation, you don’t need to practice mental transformation, you don’t need to practice transformation, transforming the mind into a positive mind, from unhealthy mind into healthy mind, from suffering mind into happy mind, so you do not need to do that.

If the person’s wish is only suffering, do not like happiness, wants, likes suffering, do not like happiness, in that case, then you don’t need to practice the mental transformation, transformation mind from the suffering mind into happy mind, or from healthy mind, from unhealthy mind to the healthy mind, from disturbing mind into peaceful mind, you do not need to do that.

Otherwise, since you are looking for happiness, then no choice, that’s the way to go about life, no choice. It’s like when you are sick you have to take medicine, similar you go to hospital take medicine, similar here, since you want, need happiness, you need to deal with, you need to workshop with your mind, you need, how to say, you need to take care of your mind. If you want happiness, you need to take care of your mind.

So then if you take care of one’s mind, then through that is the best way to take care of the body. By taking care of the mind is the best way to take care of the body is by taking care of the mind. Then otherwise, take care only body and never take care of the mind, then you’ll constantly have physical problems.

As it’s mentioned scientifically that among the people who are very angry, impatient, there’s more heart attacks, there’s more heart attacks and discover in the West, these psychologists or however, people who are impatient, there’s more possibility angry, more heart attack and other things like that.

So you can see, by taking care of the mind, then you naturally take care of your body because the vehicle of the mind is wind, the body, the subtle body, the wind. So when the mind is peaceful, like for example, the person who is riding the horse, when the person is peaceful, then the horse also gets peace, no disturbances, peaceful. When the person who is riding on the horse, if it’s kind of violent or is not peaceful, then the horse also becomes disturbed. So similar, so when the mind becomes disturbed, then negative and unhealthy, then the wind, vehicle of the mind, wind gets disturbed, so then unbalanced. So due to that, fire, water, air, earth, the four elements in the body become unbalanced. So then that’s why sickness comes, so definitely it’s connected to the physical, sicknesses are connected to the mind, they came from the mind, very clear.

Now similar, in the West, there’s one husband is doctor, wife is psychologist, I don’t remember their names but there’s a book, so through their analysis, then they discovered that cancer came from the impure mind, that’s what they said through their analysis.

And then also a doctor in Delhi, there’s a newspaper, through his analysis, said that the heart attack or the blood pressure or like that, he said that, his analysis that by thinking bad about other people, by thinking bad about other people then that causes the blood pressure, these bad circulation, blood clot, all these, so I don’t remember the name. I kept the newspaper, but then I lost. I kept, but ended up lost.

Of course, he’s in India, but in the West, because in the West many hospitals, many famous hospitals they have Indian doctors. So one time, Geshe Jampa Tegchok, the ex-abbot of Sera Je, where there’s 3,000 monks, who was abbot some time ago, so now is resident teacher there, at the moment anyway, the LMB, Land of Medicine Buddha, was Manjushri Center. So when Geshe-la was lived in England at the Manjushri Institute, first resident teacher there to teach philosophy and Geshe Kelsang to teach the lam-rim like that, that’s where Lama met, Lama Yeshe met, like that. So anyway, I think maybe lam-rim and tantra, Geshe Jampa Tegchok taught philosophy, so they divided the subjects at the center.

So,anyway, so Geshe-la, Geshe Jampa Tegchok has been sick, so then the director of that center took in London, the Manjushri Institute was comparatively far from city. So he was going to see this top doctor, very learned, very top doctor, famous doctor. So he went on and on and on, so in the hospital, then when he went, now he entered into the room, he was going to see the top doctor, so then he saw Indian, oh. When he saw Indian, he was completely shocked; he thought he was Western. Suppose in India, I think, low quality or something, this is what the general people say, but it’s not true. So he saw Indian doctor, high doctor was Indian, so that completely shocked. So that’s in London, so there are many great doctors, Indian in the West.

So anyway, like that. So I think there’s truth in what he said, what this doctor in Delhi discovered. So when you think of somebody bad, label bad, you label, you interpret what the other person thinks and does to you as bad, and then, then you know, then you believe in that, your label, in your own label you believe that, and then appear bad as I mentioned before, then bad, appeared bad, then you see bad.

So that’s your own creation, there your own projection on that person. So anyway, then that makes you angry. You created from your mind you created the whole thing. Before your mind labeled bad, you don’t see bad, it doesn’t appear bad, you don’t see bad, it doesn’t upset you, it doesn’t make you angry, only after your mind while the person that we think is harm to me. So usually attachment, harm to me, attachment, your self-cherishing thought, so makes [_?].

So usually harm is that, not harm bodhicitta, not harm your compassion, that’s the only object of compassion. And then because of that the compassion arises, so how does it harm to compassion, your compassion? Compassion by thinking how that being is suffering, so how does it harm, it doesn’t harm the compassion thinking of their suffering it makes one develop compassion.

So actually here, so completely all that creation is came from your mind, you made it up, your concept, wrong concept and then you get angry with that. You get angry with your projection and then you harm, you hit, you hit, you harm to your projection.

So,what I explained before, superstitious thought and all these projections, so here same. You create all this hallucination there. There’s hallucination of your concept of, your concept of that person is truly existent person, real person in the sense existing from its own side, not merely labeled by your mind, by your mind and exists from its side without depending on the mind at all, with any mind.

So anyway, then when you get angry, when you get angry it is its own projection, which projection, so something undesirable, projects something [_?] undesirable, something to hurt, so that it arises with its own power this thought of hurting, it’s a mental factor that projects undesirable object.

So you insult back or beat or kill or shot on the basis of this hallucination, projection. So what makes you angry is by your projection, concept of true existence. And when anger arises by thinking how bad this is, then anger arises, this is some projection. So like that.

So your view makes you get angry, makes you get angry That’s what it is, projected by your mind, your concept, what label you put, hurt you, back to you, hurt back to you, hurt back to you, your mental continuum disturbed.

But if you did a positive projection, how to say, the kindest, kind person, you know. So it’s like this, this I also mentioned in Washington just before I left, so anyway I think it’s important to mention this. So I myself always become friend of my delusion, my enemy, the real enemy delusion, the wrong concept, delusion, so myself always become friend of enemy, friend of my enemy delusion. You see, I’m supposed to destroy my enemy delusion, you know, defeat. Usually but I’ll do opposite, opposite always become servant. I will delusion, guru; you are the disciple. You become obedient disciple to the delusions, so servant, friend to the delusions, so like that, so total opposite.

You know, of course, what I want is happiness, what I do not want is suffering, but what I do is totally suffering from delusion. So I’m supposed to, but seem to be but what I do is total opposite which was only the cause of suffering, delusion overwhelm me, killing me. Never, no freedom, completely day and night, all the time completely deluded. So the mountain [clap] on you, fell on you like that. So actually I don’t give any freedom to myself, I don’t give any freedom to myself, any peace to myself. So this person is unbelievable kind helping me to destroy my self-cherishing thought, my attachment, and pacify my anger. Because this person who has anger towards me, doing things which my attachment doesn’t like, doing things which my self-cherishing doesn’t like. So this way, gives me an opportunity to practice patience; it gives me an opportunity to practice patience.

So here I’m going to say it two ways. Of course one is according to the spiritual path, so of course paramita of patience, then by completing the paramita of patience, then that brings me to enlightenment, that makes me to achieve full enlightenment. Cessation of all the sufferings, not only sufferings but all the mistakes of mind, defilements, gross, subtle, and completion of all the qualities, teach that. Then I’m able to liberate the numberless sentient beings from the oceans of samsaric sufferings and bring them to enlightenment. So this person is, what I get from this person is limitless skies of, the benefit is, what I get from this person is like limitless skies of benefit, all this benefit that I can become fully qualified, liberate numberless sentient beings from all the oceans of samsaric sufferings, and bring them to enlightenment by their kindness. So I can do this by the kindness of this person who gives me opportunity to practice patience. So the kindness here is unbelievable, unbelievable, unbelievable the limitless skies of benefit what you get from that person.

So anyway, so this person helping me, helping me together to destroy, helping me. I myself always say what I do is to help my enemy the delusions, so then to harm myself constantly. But here this helps me to together destroy my enemy—delusion, self-cherishing, attachment, also on top of that self-cherishing thought—like this, and the attachment. So how unbelievable kind.

So somebody gives you a billion dollars, you don’t get that benefit. Somebody gives you a billion dollars, you don’t get the benefit from that, Also might get attached to that person too, so anyway, you get a billion dollars, then get attached. But here, total opposite to your delusion, totally against your delusion, attachment, so your enemy. Actually it’s a reality, in reality it’s your, he or she is your support, your support destroying your enemy, your support, your helper actually. So that helping you to destroy my enemy, delusions.

So this, this very deep kindness, very deep feeling of kindness, you don’t get this from, if someone gives you a million dollars, you don’t get that, you don’t get that. If someone gives you a billion dollars, you don’t get that, the deep, deep feeling of kindness, this special kindness, you don’t get that from someone giving you a million, billion dollars, you don’t get that, this very deep kindness, so different. It can be very, it can make me happy, but you know also maybe can be attached to that. But this definitely, definitely, so against to your enemy delusion, against. So it’s your best helper, best support, best helper, best protection, protect you from delusion, from the self-cherishing thought, like that.

So the reason I thought, so there’s some people troubling something, so then thinking to do puja. I mean the organization, puja, but then I thought that puja is doing for selfish, for the happiness of selfish mind, for the attachments, puja to dispel those peoples’ causing problems, the same things that always cause difficulties. However to prevent, so then actually doing puja for selfish, for selfish, for the happiness of selfish, so like that.

So here, this actually the antidote to delusion is really by abandoning delusions, by ceasing delusions, then you achieve ultimate happiness, everlasting happiness, total liberation, enlightenment. Only by abandoning delusion, by ceasing the delusions, only can you achieve liberation and enlightenment, otherwise not, otherwise no.

So while you have the cancer, you want to achieve the healthy body without cancer. You see while you have cancer, your health cannot be, your body cannot be healthy if you have cancer at the same time.

So therefore, so it’s unbelievable kind that person, unbelievable the kindness, the kindness, something very deep, very special kindness, that not everybody does that, not everybody has that kindness, gives that great, that being against to your selfish mind and attachment to all this, the delusion destroy.

So a long time ago when I was in Dharamsala one time, so I went down so the Dialectic School teacher was staying there, so I was going to the temple. So the teacher was looking like, looking nose up, nose up in the sky, nose up in the sky looking down to me. So then I would come back to Tushita and that time my room was at the other corner of Tushita, not this one but other corner, so Lama was in the big room and I was, my room was at the other corner.

So I sat down there and I remembered that teacher, how his head was up little bit, so then I said, thought that, you know, he’s helping me to, he’s helping me to destroy together my pride. I think at that time I think that time was good day, must be good day, must be fortunate, a little bit fortunate day. I think so in the kindness of his to bring down, the kindness so really very deep. So then, the only thing one thinks that I should offer some present to him to thank, I thought to offer some present, gift to thank. I thought, but didn’t happen at the last, didn’t happen at the last minute, it didn’t happen. I just wrote it down to thank, to appreciate, but I thought that would like to.

Geshe Rabten Rinpoche has house, small house behind His Holiness Ling Rinpoche, who was elder tutor to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. So some geshe, somebody who criticized him, he comes to the house, he makes food, momos, momos very special food, Tibetan special food, so when that monk comes, and that Geshe comes to criticize him. Then he makes special food and offers.

So these are great practice, make special food, momo, momo, very special food for Tibetans. So you know, asked the attendant for best food and then offer, you see that one person who criticized to you. So makes sure this is, that little bit of practice. Then the geshe, another great meditator, Geshe Jampa Wangdu, so who was so fortunate, so fortunate who completed calm abiding in the Dalhousie and who actualized bodhicitta at Dharamsala. I think the one maybe up on the hill or something, [_?] because he said, he told me that.

Before I took teaching, before I took Dharma, took Dharma teachings from him, so anyway. So Lama and I best friend that, Dharma friend, so we hear, when he comes we hear very interesting things about meditators’ experiences which, this meditator had realization, that meditator that realization. Because they go to, some regard His Holiness the Dalai Lama as their root guru so they inform to His Holiness, they offer their attainment. So then he can go to see His Holiness any time. You don’t need to go through, you don’t need to make an appointment, but probably he knows, probably from his hermitage he knows what’s the right time to go over probably.

So anyway, he made only have to go through the attendant is only when I asked, request to His Holiness to give Chenrezig, Gyalwa Gyatso initiation, secret initiation in Dharamsala or the times when I stayed long time there. So that one then he had to ask to the attendant office, so [_?] told me that he never went through them and this was the first time, [_?] should go through the office. So like that.

So who has achieved, so then he told me that, Geshe Wangdu told me that seven years ago, seven years ago, he never went to anybody’s house, afraid for himself for praise and benefit, he never went. It doesn’t mean he didn’t went to other people’s houses, but it means for his happiness, for seven years ago he never went to anybody’s house for his happiness. So that from that talk, which means he had realization of bodhicitta, so bodhicitta realization means let go I, and cherishing only others, and seeking happiness for only others, working for only others, so seven years ago, so means that. So then he attained, realized emptiness, means this he was cave down below His Holiness Ling Rinpoche, he lived there seven years then had realization of emptiness.

So Geshe Rabten Rinpoche, he didn’t say, but Geshe Rabten Rinpoche when I was first taking commentary on mahamudra first time, first time commentary on mahamudra from Geshe Rabten Rinpoche, so if you have any questions, you ask Geshe Jampa Wangdu and he has a fresh experience emptiness, so like that. Then also not only that he had a great successful meditator of tantric path, tum-mo, Six Yogas of Naropa and the illusory body, clear light all those things, so it was very, all the development done in that life.

So anyway, so one day thief came in his house took a watch. There’s no precious things, but ordinary people when they come, bring the watch. So the thief took the watch. So when he came back to his room, watch was gone. So he was so happy. So he was so happy, so happy that thief took away this watch. So these are real Dharma practitioners, great Dharma practitioners, they really practice. So how you can achieve from there you can achieve enlightenment. So by ego, how to say, by abandoning ego, selfish thoughts, by ego [_?], then you’ll be sad, you get angry.

So what I was saying before to conclude, so I think I was in spiritual way, then this person gives me enlightenment, okay, giving me opportunity to practice patience, always practice patience. So then from that, complete the paramita of patience and achieve enlightenment, so then able to enlighten all sentient beings, so that’s the kindness, vast skies of kindness.

Then impossible to get angry, only to see that person, your appreciation only that person is so precious, so precious, so kind in my life, so like that. And not everybody is angry to you, so only this, not everyone gets angry to you, so therefore this is the only one, very rare, so this is the only one who has anger towards me, so which, which is the only one that gives me an opportunity to practice patience, so no others so it’s extremely rare, precious one in one’s life.

So even without thinking in a spiritual way, just practical way, so this is the person might train the mind in the patience, develop good human being, good qualities, to be good human being with this person. So by training mind in this, this is like my doctor, psychologist, or however. Anyway by training my mind with this person, then, then I can practice more patience with my children, with my wife, with my husband, with my family, any person, have more tolerance. So less anger, so more harmonious in the family, with husband, with wife, children, or the parents, or with the friends, you have less anger, more tolerance, so more harmonious, you’re less upset, anger.

So this is just practical, just practical, that’s obvious, that doesn’t require faith or anything, religion. If you’re angry you have no peace, happiness, and angry no peace and happiness to that other person so that’s, I mean that’s not belief or religion, it’s just reality in the life. So that brings peace to others.

So therefore then more tolerance, less anger, more tolerance here, so your husband, your wife, more peace and happiness, and your family, more peace and happiness, and like that, then you don’t harm others, then rest of the sentient beings, rest of the people in the world. So less anger towards them, more tolerance, more, so more peace and happiness to them, more peace and happiness to the world, more peace and happiness to the world. So that’s not, this is just reality, easy to understand, not belief or faith.

So if you have more happiness in your, you have better relationships, more happiness, and then you are able to help the world, more peace and happiness, like that. So therefore, here non-believer, only believe in one life, needs to practice Dharma, need to practice meditation, patience. And the same, need to practice contentment, otherwise so much desire, problem unbelievable, unbelievable. We engage in many harm to, when you don’t it doesn’t happen, and in order to happen, in order to happen the success, mind never gets satisfied, then you more and more, by the business, or whatever it is, more and more relationships, whatever it is, more and more. Then you engage in harm others, so many things.

Then at the end, then your life gets, then at the end you end up in world with bad reputation by the dissatisfied mind, desire, end up with a bad reputation in the world. Then end up in prison, however, like that. And have worry, fear, lose faith, and all that. So, therefore here, wise thing is to practice, for your peace and happiness, and peace and happiness others, so to practice contentment, renunciation, contentment.

So in business, no limit, not satisfaction, no satisfaction, more and more and more and more, after thousands, millions, billion, then trillion, however there’s no end. So the desire never, not ever ends always want more if you follow that. So therefore, what happens, always you don’t have good karma, you don’t have merit. Many people don’t think of the merit cause of success—the merit, good karma—they don’t think. You just think your idea economical, economical or economic policy, your business idea you just think like this going to happen, but you never think of the cause, the merit. There has to be merit, good karma, they never think of that.

So far success came from some little merit from past good karma, so then when you don’t create more you don’t think of that, don’t know that, and then finish that. Little merit, whatever living on that, finished, wealth and all that. Now that finish, run out, then now suddenly all the negative karma, so then you face so many difficulties and then next day become beggar. Then next day all the business collapse, whole business collapse next day, you worry about even rent, even how to pay rent, family, food, it’s like that. So there’s happiness many times in the world, so the shortcomings of desire, not practicing contentment.

So however, so again here, even in one life, just believe one life you need to  practice, since you want happiness you need to practice Dharma, meditation, contentment, renunciation. So like that, same, live with compassion, same, I mean all those things.

So however even non-believer, even as non-believer, no religion, even as non-believer, but it’s very useful to look for this I, even as non-believer to do meditation analysis this I. What you believe, what appears to you, what you believe is there or not? Look for, even as non-believer. It helps so much, it helps, it’s like putting, it’s like when the hot water is boiled up, put the cold water comes down.

So you have this unbelievable problem of business or relationships or something, then other people criticizing all this, you know, so you think, you look for the I, that we’re so scared for, who is the I want to be better than others, or so scared or someone is going to receive harm, so look for this I, can’t find, can’t find. So even if one doesn’t believe in reincarnation, karma all these things but just one life, but if you do this meditation, this research, the analysis, analysis like scientists. So suddenly, suddenly it cuts the problem, the problem is not there, you don’t see it as problem, so it really cuts the problem.

So what appeared before problem, now it totally doesn’t make sense, it’s childish, all that. When you think this, when you discover your own, that emotional I, not there. So anyway, so here Dharma practice and meditation is not only for people who believe in reincarnation and karma, really definitely need these things, definitely need in the life of young people, in the life of old people, thinking only this one life need everybody. Without that, how can you enjoy life without the compassion, with this positive mind, how can you enjoy the life, so like that.

So anyway, maybe I’m not going to go off there, so I’ll just, so I think then as a Buddhist, no question. So we should train our mind whenever difficulty comes in our life, must think, train our mind, use that, use that when you experience that, what His Holiness in recent teachings said many times, this is a very, very good thought transformation practice by from Panchen Shakya Shri, one Tibetan Lama. So again I have bad memory. Anyway the meaning is when you encounter suffering may all sentient beings’ sufferings be ripened, take all sentient beings’ sufferings on ourself. And may the oceans of sufferings of other sentient beings, may the oceans of sufferings of all sentient beings be dried out.

When you have happiness, then you dedicate your happiness to collect merits, beginning part I don’t remember exactly but meaning is that [Tibetan]. You dedicate your merits to sentient beings. You dedicate your merits and your happiness to sentient beings to collect merit. So you do that, then you collect limitless skies of merit, because numberless sentient beings whom you are dedicating your happiness, giving your happiness, then numberless, so numberless merit you collect.

So first stanza of verse and then [Tibetan] next one: “May the sentient beings, may the whole sky filled with peace and happiness.” What it’s saying is that every sentient being, numberless sentient beings, when you’re making prayer, may everyone receive skies of peace and happiness. So when you, in the daily life when you experience happiness, so dedicate. You give your happiness to all sentient beings to collect merit, okay. Then say prayer: “May every sentient being receive skies of [Tibetan], may each sentient being receive skies of peace and happiness.”

So now here, when you, when we experience happiness, for example, five star hotel or some comfortable luxury place, comfortable, when you get, you give this to all sentient beings. This comfort you give all sentient beings, then this way you don’t run out of merit. Otherwise little merit, little merit you collect is a result of little merit you collect before.

So if you only enjoy that, so of course with the attachment, then it becomes the cause of samsara, with the self-cherishing thought it becomes obstacle to achieve enlightenment. If it’s not enjoyment, then living in that beautiful, luxury house if it’s not done with bodhicitta, a good heart, compassionate heart to sentient beings, so with the attachment it becomes cause of samsara directly born again in samsara, suffer continuously. So like that. So you run out of the little merit you collect, run out quickly, then you face hardships, poverty, you experience poverty, so run out of money.

So now here, you use both for the practice then you get the comfort, the luxury, you give all sentient beings, so you collect limitless skies of merit, and then you pray every sentient being receives skies of peace and happiness. So you do that when you have, not only place, but any enjoyment, any happiness in the daily life, friend, friendship or any happiness, so you dedicate. So this way always you create cause good karma, limitless skies of merits, then all this becomes cause of enlightenment, not just liberating but cause of enlightenment because you dedicated for sentient beings, so highest success, like that. So what I’m saying.

So here, I didn’t finish, so we should train our mind, any difficulty in our life, we should exercise our mind that to look at positive, people criticizing whatever, positive. We should train, exercise our mind that obstacle to the path to that. So you know, so useful thought transformation practice then what Panchen Sakya Shri mentioned, what His Holiness always mentions, [Tibetan] it’s taking other sentient beings’ sufferings, that was left out, so I think the people didn’t get actual to the real point in that time, but that the oceans of suffering be dried up, therefore that happened. The middle one, very important one, they didn’t hear.

Of course, extremely difficult to translate Dharma. I mean, who can translate from beginning to end perfect without missing anything, any point becomes extremely difficult, extremely difficult. So, can do, I mean there, I’m sure people can do, but that’s not everyone can do.

So anyway, and then whatever difficulty arises, immediately give, give it to your ego, give it to your self-cherishing thought, other somebody criticizes you, bad treat you, whatever, give it to your self-cherishing thought and destroy. That who never allowed you to achieve enlightenment so far, there’s never an end, only suffering from beginningless rebirth up to now, you give it to the self cherishing. Whenever the difficulty in your life, somebody criticizing or somebody said something didn’t happen, didn’t do what you like, didn’t do, so went the opposite, however we should train our mind, exercise immediately to give it to the self-cherishing thought and destroy this.

All this, anything that didn’t happen according to your wish, something happened opposite, that’s shortcomings of self-cherishing thought. You see in the past didn’t fulfill your wishes of sentient beings, didn’t fulfill wishes of guru, so what do sentient beings didn’t do exactly what. So anyway, being jealous, jealous of others’ success, so therefore your success gets disturbed by others, because in the past being jealous of others’ success or disturbed others to have success.

Therefore this is negative karma collected with self-cherishing thought in the past, it circled, the wheel of sharp weapons circled on your, but you give to this ego and cut it, you cut the ego. So this way then you can think all this, or other people criticizing, or all the difficulties, you can think this is most precious thing in your life. Other people criticizing bad to you, this most precious thing, how fantastic is this. So we should exercise our mind, train our mind to think like that. Then there’s no problem in the life, problems are gone, so thought transformation, looking at the suffering as happiness. A day, then goodbye problems, like apple a day, like apple a day, goodbye doctors, so something like that. So that’s it, so now, so now the Golden Light Sutra, the real Golden Light Sutra.

I like this Buddha very much. So anyway, first praise Buddha.

[Rinpoche chants in Tibetan]

So this is middle version. There’s a longer version, middle version, and short version, this one I’m reading in my Mickey Mouse divination it came out the middle one to do. Of course the short version is less page, but then this came out so, I mean [not it was cut off but I got through to?] read the Golden Light Sutra. So the skies of benefit, skies of benefit it has, reading this and listening to this, even just listening to this. So by reading this, Golden Light Sutra, it directs your life towards enlightenment, your life only goes up, you never goes down, only goes up towards enlightenment, only goes up, so that is extremely important, so this is Golden Light Sutra, it’s unbelievable protection.

So that you collect so many protectors, they guide you all the time. So that’s why your, you become free from many problems and all your wishes, you collect so much merit, so your wishes naturally become fulfilled, all your wishes for happiness to help others, yourself. And then, when you read this, for example here in Portland, so all the sick people in Portland, it becomes a healing for all those sick people in Portland, same in New York, whichever city you read, whichever city you are reading this, all those sick people in that city it becomes a healing for them.

So it is unbelievable. If you want to pray somebody’s family member who is sick, who has cancer, it’s good to read. If you don’t know meditation, don’t know what to do other than if you can read Golden Light Sutra it is a very good thing to do.

And then, the Golden Light Sutra it is especially the bringing peace and happiness in the country, in the world, especially benefit for that. So some time ago when there is so much war happening in Iraq and all that, so I just did some, of course it’s just Mickey Mouse divination, so it came out very benefit, the best to bring peace is reading the Golden Light Sutra, reading Golden Light Sutra for world peace, like the situation in Iraq, like that, came out very good.

So now in Burma all that is problems, so then like that. The next one is to build a specific stupa, so that unbelievable benefit to others. So normally I suggest, also I think build a website as well, make a suggestion or request so to read, even if one forgot, no matter how busy you are, even to read some paragraph, like that. So it helps you, it takes care of you from now on up to enlightenment and then it benefits so much the world.

So and then, it is said that where the Golden Light Sutra doesn’t exist any more on this earth at that time Buddhadharma is stopped. But as long as the Golden Light Sutra exists in world, so like that. So there are many special mantras, so this collects like skies of merit, unlimited merits, so then that helps all your wishes to become true, including enlightenment sooner or later. So for success, wealth or whatever the thing you need, so there are many special mantras inside also, like that.

It is also very good to when you drive car, because so much of our life we have to spend in car, coming and going, so much of life goes in the car so therefore, it’s a very wise thing to CD, in English the CD you put in the car, then you recite together while you are driving, you can recite together. You can listen, that’s incredible purification and merit, but also you recite so the much more merit and purification, so that’s what needs.

So I received this oral transmission, the middle one, from Kyabje Bakula Rinpoche who is embodiment of the Sixteen Arhats who asked the Buddha to protect the Buddhadharma and look to take care of who are the Dharma practitioners. So actually they are enlightened beings.

So there’s Bakula Rinpoche, Bakula, arhat who is holding a mongoose in the hand, so this Rinpoche from whom I received this oral transmission is the embodiment of that. So Rinpoche passed away some time ago, and so in Ladakh, there was no mongoose, they never saw mongoose. But after Rinpoche passed away, Rinpoche’s monastery where there are prayer flags stands up, so there’s a mongoose running around there, so the first time see the mongoose. Then, then the mongoose came in the room, Rinpoche’s room, and sat on Rinpoche’s bed where Rinpoche sit, he sits there. Then the attendant, Rinpoche’s attendant bring food, like normally he offered to Rinpoche, bring a set of offering food in a tray, then you bring up like this and put on the table, then the mongoose eat, the mongoose eat, seven days like that. So it’s amazing happened. So, the arhat has a mongoose holding, so it means, this arhat also, other benefit for sentient beings brings wealth, relieving poverty.

So the attendant served like Rinpoche was there, so the mongoose was there for seven days.

[Rinpoche leads prayers in Tibetan]

Think then, before what’s called death before it comes, then I must make sure to not be reborn in the lower realm to achieve higher rebirth. And not only that, make sure to be free from samsara, and not only that, so there’s.

Just to little bit expound, this is from Pabongka Rinpoche’s the shortest motivation, but I’m not going to, I’ll explain a little bit. So all my past, present, future happiness, all my, I receive all my numberless past, present, and future happiness, liberation and enlightenment, everything from, from every hell beings, there’s numberless hell beings from each of them, all my happiness, every single comes from them, they the most precious, most kind ones in my life.

So then, all my numberless past happiness, present and future happiness, liberation and enlightenment, I receive by the kindness of every, by the kindness of every, by the kindness of every hungry ghost feel that, feel that, the most precious, most kind one in my life.

I receive all my numberless past happiness, present, future happiness including liberation and enlightenment, everything I receive by the kindness of every single animal, the numberless animals, I receive from them, they’re the most precious, the most kind ones in my life, okay.

I receive numberless past happiness, present and future happiness, liberation and enlightenment, everything, by the kindness of every single human beings, every single human being, there are numberless human beings, and including the human beings here in the hall. Not only thinking human being in the sky or something, but just think everybody here, especially think of your enemy whom you hate or who hates you, so especially think that, include that. All your past, numberless past, present, and future happiness all you receive from every human being here and all the rest. They’re the most precious, most kind ones in my life.

Then numberless past, present, and future happiness, liberation and enlightenment, I receive by the kindness of every single suras, asuras, suras, asuras, all those devas, all the gods, they’re the most precious ones in my life, and numberless past, present, and future happiness, liberation and enlightenment, I receive by the kindness of every single intermediate state being, they’re the most precious, most kind ones in my life.

Now think, I have all the opportunities, so I have responsibility, I have a universal responsibility to free, actually every single sentient being from all the suffering causes and bring them to enlightenment, okay? I have also opportunity to do that, to learn the Dharma, have the virtuous friend who reveals the path to enlightenment without missing, left out, okay, so that I can complete the development, so I have all these opportunities. So I have full responsibility by from that, even from just that, because I have all the opportunities so I have full responsibility of all sentient beings’ happiness to bring them to enlightenment. So therefore, so first feel this. [Pause to meditate]

You know, feeling universal responsibility, I’m responsible for numberless hell beings, free them from all the suffering and bring them to enlightenment. I’m responsible free all the asuras from the suffering causes and bring them to enlightenment and universal responsibility to free all the asuras from the suffering causes and bring them to enlightenment. I’m total, total universal responsibility to free all the numberless hell beings from all the suffering causes and bring them to enlightenment. I feel universal responsibility totally free the hungry ghosts, limitless hungry ghosts from the suffering causes and bring them to full enlightenment. And numberless animals from all the suffering causes and bring them to enlightenment. And numberless intermediate state beings free them from all the suffering and bring them to enlightenment, so like that.

Feel this therefore, no other ways, no other means to complete this, which is first myself to achieve state of omniscient mind. A state of buddhahood, the complete, which has complete qualities of understanding and compassion and power, perfect compassion, perfect power. So for that I need to actualize the path, so for all this success and then to offer extensive benefit to sentient beings, teachings of the Buddha, then I’m going to take the oral transmission of the Golden Light Sutra.
