Habituated in Nonvirtue

Rinpoche gave the following advice about the consequence of engaging in nonvirtuous actions.

We have to remember that Buddha said in the sutras that if we do nonvirtuous actions—if we are always habituated and made familiar with that—then we will also follow negative karma in the future. We will follow the negative karma and depend on it, just as a house depends on the earth.

If we have become so habituated and familiar with negative karma in the past and the present, then as a result, we will be involved in negative karma in the future and we will do it again; we will follow the negative karma.

The big problem is not only the result of suffering in the lower realms, but also we will engage in the same negative karma in the future. We will live our lives dependent on that and we will follow that. These words of the Buddha are unbelievably important, because they tell us what will endanger all our future lives for a hundred thousand lifetimes.

If we engage in nonvirtuous actions in this life, it makes the next life very difficult, so it is more difficult to become a monk and to live in pure vows in our future lives. This is without talking about the suffering of the lower realms. There will also be many other problems in the life due to that—problems in the world and relationship problems. There will be so many relationships problems and problems in the future, so this is very, very important. As well as having problems in this life, it also makes our future lives so difficult.
