Part D: Sanghata Sutra recitation and commentary

[Rinpoche continues oral transmission of Arya Sanghata Sutra.]

So here, it says, Buddha said that, Keep quiet, keep quiet, the child, this is son, this is son, so not race, I will explain you the merits, I will express the merits of listening one verse, one verse which has four words listening, like this, the son of the race, an example, it says, you generate more greater merit, you generate many greater merit, greater, the collections of greater, the heaps of merit, than the heaps of merit of the Tathagata, the Destroyer, fully enlightened, equaling the number of the sand grains of [pause] thirteen Pacific Ocean, sand grains, buddhas equaling the sand grains of the thirteen Pacific Oceans, so means unbelievable, unbelievable merits, the subtle atoms of thirteen Pacific Oceans, so all those buddhas merits, can’t imagine how much. Even one Buddha’s merit is unimaginable. So now here, what it is saying is, [pause] so even listening, so listening even one verse, it says four words, so here it’s talking about, so collect many, great many greater heaps of merit than the heaps of merit of the buddhas, how many buddha? Equaling the number of sand grains, very subtle atoms of thirteen Pacific Oceans. So can’t imagine. So I suggest that, so therefore, how precious it is, each word you listen it’s unbelievable how much merit you collect, okay, so even four words.

So normally, when you give teachings, you can’t give teachings to people who are standing or wearing hats, there are many Dharma rules. The lama who explains the teaching, the master who explain the teaching, they made rules, then for the disciples who listen they made Dharma rules, anything disrespect, anything that creates negative karma stop, and all the rules to collect merit. But here, if you are falling asleep or difficult to listen, I mean, can listen by standing or by walking, so that you don’t miss the teaching. So could do like that.

I heard that, actually myself I should do that in the teachings, standing, so this falling asleep a lot, I think it’s something negative karma collected in the past so then it happens again and again, habit. So falling asleep in teachings. So, must be habit from the past.

So, in Kalimpong in India, where there’s many Tibetan people, settlement, so Kyabje Trulshik Rinpoche, the ?head lama, incredible great lama, so one of the lamas who preserved _____ Dharma. So Rinpoche was receiving Kangyur, oral transmission of Kangyur, from Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, from whom also His Holiness took initiations, now passed away, now already there’s reincarnation. So I heard that Rinpoche, Kyabje Trulshik Rinpoche when he was receiving the lung of the Kangyur, all the entire thing, [pause] maybe, I can’t remember, maybe two hundred or one hundred volumes, anyway, so I heard among the public that Rinpoche stood up to listen to the teaching, so without any thought of shy, people, in public, so he stood up to listen to the teachings, the oral transmission. I think, it was explained to me by Kyabje Tsenshap Serkong Rinpoche, so could do like that because otherwise you will miss so much teaching, so can stand, can walk, as long as you can hear, then that’s good. It plants seed of enlightenment, as long as you can hear.

Also think, this is same, not only this time but other times when one takes teachings from virtuous friend then it’s good to think that, you think that Guru Shakyamuni Buddha is giving teaching to me, so either manifesting in this form to me, in this ordinary form to give me teaching, or through this, guiding me to enlightenment, giving teaching, so Manjushri is giving teaching to me, or Maitreya Buddha is giving teaching to me, so Tara is giving teaching to me. So all the buddhas, there are numberless buddhas, everyone is giving teaching to me, guiding me to enlightenment, so that’s also very good to think, kind of that, time to time to remember that is also very good. So then you feel connected to all the buddhas, so you get the full confidence that you are guided by, that you being guided by buddhas, so that’s also very useful.

[Rinpoche continues oral transmission of Arya Sanghata Sutra.]

So the first chapter is finished. There’s four. So now the second one.

[Rinpoche continues oral transmission of Arya Sanghata Sutra.]

So here, essence what it’s talking is that, so anyway, one king got a child and then and they received prediction about the child, how it’s going to be so powerful, then it will kill the, against to the parents, will be against to the parents and kill both father and mother, so anyway, at the end he become king. So the son become king, so that’s what the sage told, will be a very powerful king. When he become seven years old then he will kill the father and mother.

So anyway, he didn’t accept to be king, anyway, the king said this is my karma, the father, king, said this is my karma, even the, I won’t to kill the son, it’s my karma ?whatever happens. Then anyway, all the ministers they asked him to become king, so then they asked why, then he said that many numberless eons I have been king but I never got satisfaction, I had all the control, power, wealth and power, I had all the wealth and power but never got satisfaction.

So then after quite some time then he killed both parents as the sage predicted. Then the son who become king, unbelievable regretfulness, felt so much suffering. So Buddha said that I went, I generated compassion, I went that time to reveal Dharma to that king. So Buddha said, I remember by revealing this Dharma that king’s five uninterrupted negative karmas, not five, the uninterrupted negative karma that collected, completely purified, nothing slightest trait even left by revealing, by hearing the Arya Sanghata Sutra.

So then the, here it says, by what virtue, such this negative karma that can be pacified immediately, in one second, that can be purified, by what virtue that this negative karma that can be extremely purified in one second, so that’s the question. Then the Buddha’s answer is, by hearing the Arya Sanghata Sutra, such heavy negative karma is purified, virtue which can purify such this heavy negative karma in one second, the Buddha answered, by hearing the Arya Sanghata Sutra. Then by hearing, devoting to this teaching definitely brings to enlightenment, so Buddha predicted for enlightenment. So same for us, so it’s same, by hearing this, those very heavy negative karmas they get purified and same, Buddha predicted us. Buddha predicted us to achieve enlightenment, so by, when we generate devotion to the Arya Sanghata Sutra, so same applies to us also, Buddha predicted us, from that we achieve enlightenment.

[Rinpoche continues oral transmission of Arya Sanghata Sutra.]

So even somebody created all the five uninterrupted negative karma, all the five, same, by listening the Arya Sanghata Sutra, so all those negative karma, all the five, completely purified.

[Rinpoche continues oral transmission of Arya Sanghata Sutra.]

Even you hear just one verse which is only four words from Arya Sanghata Sutra, then you put palms together, generate devotion, you put palms together, you prostrate like that, all the five uninterrupted negative karma all completely get purified. If you listen the whole entire, the Arya Sanghata Sutra teaching, then no question the merits will be far, so much far more greater.

[Rinpoche continues oral transmission of Arya Sanghata Sutra.]

Yeah, maybe translate, what I mentioned before.

[Chun Ru: Rinpoche, word or one verse?]

One verse which has four words, even by listening to that, then you generate devotion, put the palms together, you prostrate to the Arya Sanghata Sutra, then all the five uninterrupted negative karma completely get purified. So if you listen all the whole entire teaching then the merit is far, so many merits that you collect, so many, so many great heaps of merits.

[Rinpoche continues oral transmission of Arya Sanghata Sutra.]

It says here the Arya Sanghata Sutra does work in the world, does the activities of Buddha in this world for sentient beings. And then anybody who don’t hear the Arya Sanghata Sutra won’t be able to achieve enlightenment, won’t be able to turn Dharma wheel. So therefore, you’re, oneself is extremely fortunate, so can achieve full enlightenment. So it ?does ______  sentient beings who can achieve full enlightenment, by having heard the Arya Sanghata Sutra. So, it will be more definite.

[Rinpoche continues oral transmission of Arya Sanghata Sutra.]

So wherever there’s the Arya Sanghata Sutra there’s the Buddha always.

[Rinpoche continues oral transmission of Arya Sanghata Sutra.]

How is it going there? That’s good, very good. Now I got very inspired. [GL]
I think I should be also standing. [GL]
Sooner or later.

[Rinpoche continues oral transmission of Arya Sanghata Sutra.]

So now the second chapter’s finished. Now third.

[Rinpoche continues oral transmission of Arya Sanghata Sutra.]

The dog went out.
[Chun Ru: He say he open the gate, try to invite the two dogs to come in but they didn’t want to.]
[RL] I think they thought, that’s enough. [GL]
They thought that maybe the Arya Sanghata Sutra is too much. Too much for them. [RL]

[Rinpoche continues oral transmission of Arya Sanghata Sutra.]

So there happened a story that, Bonpo, the spirit Bonpo, one ____, maybe could be Shamanism, what it’s called, so I think asked to sacrifice a human being, the family [pause] had some problem, relieve poverty of the family or something, [pause] I don’t remember exactly. So after this family’s son sick or to relieve poverty, something, anyway this sprit, from Shamanism, Bon, worship, said to sacrifice a human being, that that will help anyway. So sacrifice, I think the parents believed the survival of the son, so with that hope I think the man, one man sacrificed.

So here talking about the karma of that. The mother born in the hell realm, Crying, Great Crying. Father born in the hell realm of Gathered and Crushed. The son born in the hell realm, the Hot, the Great Hot. The spirit, from Bonpo, who accepted the sacrifice, I mean, who asked, born in the lowest hot hell, the Inexhaustible hot hell, which is the heaviest one. Then the man who was sacrificed, the man they used to sacrifice to the spirit, so the man’s story is what I want to tell is this, so the man didn’t have any, the man who was sacrificed but the man didn’t have any mistakes, to kill. So that man was born in the deva realm, Thirty-three deva realm. So then the Buddha explained this, where they were born each of them. Then Buddha was asked, why this man was born in the Thirty-three deva realm, why, the one who was sacrificed? So Buddha explained, Buddha said, to ?Men Kyi De, Buddha explained to ?Men Kyi De, why, because this man who was sacrificed to the spirit, Bonpo, that time this man, when he was about to die he generated devotion to the Buddha, and he said, I prostrate to Buddha. He said just one time, with the devotion to Buddha, Tathagata, he said, I prostrate to Buddha, he just said one time, just before he died. So just because of that, Buddha said, Buddha told ?Men Kyi De, that by that merit he will be born in deva realm, Thirty-three deva realm for sixty eons and he will experience happiness there. They have many hundred thousands times much more greater sense pleasure. Then he will remember, life back, eighty eons life back he will remember and from life to life he will be free from pain, he will be free from sorrow, pain. And immediate when he gets reborn, immediate all the sufferings get stopped. So Buddha explained like this Here is the main point of the story is that this man who was sacrificed, at the time of death, just before he died, devotion to Buddha, Tathagata, Buddha and said, I prostrate to Buddha, that’s it, just one time. So the benefit of that, that’s the main story that I want you to know, along with that. So I don’t need to repeat, so all that benefit what he achieved just from that, Buddha explained.

So for example, there happened earthquake in Taiwan, huge earthquake that so many people died, even the Sanghas, so many monasteries were destroyed, for example, if something like this suddenly happens. I am using as an example, earthquake or something. Then, suddenly if you can think, devote to Buddha, remember Buddha, like this person did who was sacrificed to the spirit, then you don’t get reborn in lower realm, you are protected. So same benefit you will get or even much more than this person.

Or even, from this you should get the idea, so you are just about to die, about to stop the breath, so that’s the same thing. You know you are going to die now, so at least this is what you do, even you can’t do much. So just generate faith to Buddha, whatever it is, Amitabha or Chenrezig, whatever, so to Buddha, so then, I prostrate to Buddha or you recite if one can but if you can’t recite, however, mind, devotion. So if one can speak, express, then you say this. It’s an example but of course you can do any other prayer but however mind generate devotion to Buddha before you die.

It is said in the Kangyur by Buddha that who go for refuge, I prostrate to the, la ma tön pa chom den dä…chhag tshal lo, something like that, that’s the complete name, ?pal shakya ______, so, Buddha said who recite this, [pause] there’s another, short one, de zhing sheg pa dra chom pa yang dag par dzog pai sang gya la chhag tshal lo, I prostrate to Tathagata, arhat, this arhat doesn’t mean the lower arhat, this means Buddha having destroyed enemy, not only the disturbing-thought obscuration but also subtle obscuration, so enemy, the enemy refers to both. So this is Buddha, one who is fully enlightened. So Buddha said, who recite this, Buddha said I have no, I don’t have so much worry. I don’t have so much worry, Buddha said. I don’t have so much worry who recite this. So that means, Buddha said, why Buddha said, I don’t have so much worry for those who recite this, also saves from the lower realm, purify negative karma, purify so many eons negative karma, it purifies so many negative karma and then so the person, from there, because of Buddha’s protection, from the side of the person reciting that I think goes from happiness to happiness. And then eventually to enlightenment. So that is the procedure, just from reciting that, benefit what the person achieves, so from happiness to happiness to enlightenment. So therefore I think that’s the reason why sooner or later the person get liberated from samsara by actualizing the path, then achieve enlightenment. So then Buddha is saying, I don’t have much to worry who recite this. You see from here, this example here, the man who died, devotion to Tathagata, said, I prostrate to Buddha, just one time, unbelievable, so much sixty eons he will be reborn, Buddha said that he will be reborn in the Thirty-three deva realm and experience bliss. So that, for the time being like that, even for the time being, but eventually even to achieve enlightenment, sooner or later.

So it has, you can say, skies of benefit, what you achieve by reciting that, de zhin sheg pa…sang gye la chag tsel lo, just that. So in that text there were quite a number of words which I don’t understand so I checked with Kyabje Chöden Rinpoche in America, so Rinpoche thought that line, where Buddha said, I don’t worry about those people, so Rinpoche made, I was reading to Rinpoche and Rinpoche, I was surprised or to, kind of special attention to that. So, now we should know we are in that, much more than that, I mean, it’s not just praying only that, much more than that, I mean you hear the whole, I mean, meditate on the lam-rim, and training in the path, mind training in the path and also tantra on the top, there’s sadhanas of the deity, the two stages, like those who have taken initiation, so that’s unbelievable, that’s no question. How unbelievable fortunate we are, that we have such a, sooner or later, quick way to be liberated, to finish the suffering of samsara and achieve enlightenment.

So I am using this when, I am using this also an idea if [snaps fingers] car accident or earthquake, if something suddenly you come to know you are going to die, so you remember this idea, then you are saved, hundred percent safe, just simple to remember Buddha, then generate faith.

And Kyabje Chöden Rinpoche explained at LMB when he was talking about refuge part, talking about the best Dharma practitioners way of dying, middle Dharma practitioner’s way of dying, the last Dharma practitioner’s way of dying. So last Dharma practitioner’s way of dying, Rinpoche said, Oh, I have Buddha, Dharma, Sangha to go for refuge, I don’t need to be afraid. I have Buddha, Dharma, Sangha to rely upon, so I don’t need to be afraid. So having reliance to Buddha, Dharma, Sangha means I have Buddha, Dharma, Sangha to rely on. So then that, when you think that, the fear goes away, there’s no fear of death, no fear of death, no danger to be reborn in the lower realms. So that’s, no danger to be born in lower realms, no fear, the fear goes away. When you think that, Oh, I, remember, I don’t need to be afraid of death, when death comes, because I have Buddha, Dharma, Sangha to rely on. So that’s a great instruction. The very, at least, I mean, the very last thing, the very, at least, [pause] at least, so this what one can do.
