By Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche
Shakyamuni Center, Taiwan 2007 (Archive #1610)

Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave these teachings during a Medicine Buddha Puja at Shakyamuni Center, Taichung, Taiwan on March 10, 2007. The teachings include extensive commentary on the Thirty-five Buddhas practice, the offering bath and dedications, along with the recitation of the puja.

The teachings were being translated into Chinese and while we have edited those sections out you may still occasionally hear the Chinese interpreter's voice in the background.

Medicine Buddha Puja, Continued

[Rinpoche continues the seven-limb prayer.]

So think the, the assemblies of buddhas as you make the request, fully accepted, happily, delightfully accepted, whatever you made prayer to be actualized immediately, right in this second.

So then you, whatever you promised in the past, please, reveal me, me and sentient beings, without delay of even a second, that’s the first request.

Second request, whatever prayer I make, may it be actualized immediately. So that’s the second prayer.

The first prayer is there, the second prayer is not there, so this is just, I thought to do that way, in the Medicine Buddha practice, to add that. So to make it more powerful, okay?

So then this time, you think, so whatever, so, His Holiness’s long life and to be pacified all the life obstacles. So then, after that whatever, so whatever important things you want to accomplish, you have in your mind, so you think that, okay? Or somebody else, some friend, somebody who is dying, or cancer, or whatever, then you include, you think of that, to heal or to have long life, whatever it is, then the projects, so that, you can think of all the projects of FPMT, can think that also.

Then everyone, anyone who, everyone who made the offerings, and everyone who made, name, giving name to request, pray, so we should include every one of them.

So to have, if it’s somebody who died, then to be born in a pure land where can become enlightened, or receive a perfect human body, achieve enlightenment quickly. All those who are sick or whatever, then to have long life, like that, to have most meaningful life, okay like that. To be healed, all the sickness to be healed, all life obstacles to be pacified, and have most meaningful life, by actualizing bodhicitta.

The one who committed suicide, the name, do you have the name here? Who committed suicide, who died, committed suicide?

[Huang Chun Ru: Yeah, I put upstairs. I gave to Roger.]

If there’s a list of names, then, we just think whoever there is on the list of names. If there’s a request done, if there’s a list, then we just say “all those who are on the list,” if there’s such a like that.

[pause]

Then next request.

[Rinpoche continues to recite Medicine Buddha Puja in Tibetan.]

So, when we say, chag tshäl lo, means to prostrate, that time you can do the meditation numberless of your body, either deity’s form, like Chenrezig, Thousand Arms, or however, your body doing prostrations to the Medicine Buddha, the eight Medicine Buddhas, then the holy Dharma, the scriptures, the bodhisattvas, the Dharma protectors, could do that.

So again, making offering on behalf of all sentient beings, including your family or friend, whoever, or enemy, including enemy, if you want to help to enemy. So all these offerings here, lights, all these offerings here, all these, nature of great bliss, okay? All the offerings upstairs, all the water, outside offerings, all the offerings, water, then, inside, nature of great bliss, okay? All the offerings in FPMT centers gompas in the nature of great bliss; Aptos house, Khachö Dechen Ling, all the offerings in the nature of great bliss; all the Washington offerings in the nature of great bliss. Now offer to the eight Medicine Buddhas, the holy Dharma, bodhisattvas, Dharma protectors, that they’re all the guru, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, all the ten-direction holy objects.

Now next, prostrate and make all the offerings here, then, upstairs, and all the rest of the offerings, same as before, then nature of great bliss, offer to ten-direction Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, who is the guru, and then, offer to the ten-direction statues, stupas, scriptures, all the holy objects, who is the guru, and generate infinite bliss within all of them.

So that’s the short way, then to elaborate, all the holy objects in this world, as we did at the very beginning. Then there’s particular, like that. So there’s holy objects in Tibet, besides Shakyamuni Buddha, the two, Ramoche Jowo and Lhasa, the Jokhang Jowo, the two, one brought from Nepal, one brought from China, those historical. Then, Sera Je there’s Hayagriva, the historical, the wisdom being abiding. Then at Drepung Monastery the meaningful to behold, the Maitreya Buddha. At Reting there’s Lama Atisha’s devotional object, ?Sang Mikyo Dorje. So there are many holy objects in Tibet. So like that. Elaborate way then, again make offerings to all the holy objects all over the world. So like that. The short way is as I mentioned before. This, so offering to Medicine Buddha and so forth, then thinking that is all the guru, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, all the ten-direction holy objects. Then after offering to all the ten-direction Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, by thinking of the guru, then after that, ten-direction statues, stupas, scriptures by thinking of the guru. That’s the short way of doing.

Now here, when we recite the prayer then offer music, the extensive offering is already done here, particular the playing, offering music, same, the offering is the same, then Medicine Buddha, all the rest, then we can think, guru, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, all the ten-direction holy objects, then the next one is all the ten-direction Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, all the guru, then the next all the statues, stupas, scriptures, all the guru, so like that. When you offer music, even other people playing music but you make offering all the music, from your side, you make, all this music is offering to, even though you’re not playing, other people playing, but the idea is to make offering of the music, okay.

Every music and every offering, incense, light, water, food, every offering has ten benefits, including music, so, ten benefits, so everything becomes a cause of enlightenment. The music, even though you’re not playing, even somebody else is playing, but the idea is here you’re supposed to make offering, similar to light offerings, okay?

[Rinpoche begins seven-limb prayer to first Medicine Buddha, with playing of music.]

So all the negative karma is completely purified, then nothing’s left, not even a trace of it is left.

Now we rejoice.

Next one rejoice all sentient beings’ merits, collected from beginningless rebirth up to now, and will be collected in the future, so from this merit they achieve all the happiness, all the temporary happiness, ultimate happiness—liberation and enlightenment—everything, all the realizations of the path to liberation, enlightenment, everything, so how, feeling great happiness in your heart, that they collected merit. So, I think, how, feel happiness in the heart, then, how wonderful it is, how wonderful it is, so you count like that, so five, ten, how many you can do, feel happiness in the heart.

You can do with also mala.

[pause]

[Rinpoche continues seven-limb prayer.]

So the, when you persuading to turn Dharma wheel then, offering the dharmachakra, a thousand spokes, radiating one, to them. And if possible, numberless of you offer, a thousand-spoke dharmachakra.

The next one, the requesting to have stable life, then, hold a golden throne decorated with jewels, raised by the snow lions, eight snow lions and double vajra in the front, so offer that, numberless of you offer.

So this is what the meditation should be each time when you go through this seven limb, then last, dedication, due to these merits then, you can think like this: “Due to the three-time merits collected by others, then may I achieve enlightenment for all sentient beings.” You can quickly think like that.

So I just mentioned here, so this is what you remember every time when you go through the seven limbs.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

So here it’s very clear, the, here, merits from having reciting Medicine Buddha’s name, heard, remembered, and expressed, did the prostrations, offerings, so due to all this merit then, the praying to Medicine Buddha all these things to happen for sentient beings, for oneself and all sentient beings. “Oneself and so forth” that means all sentient beings. So there, the prayer is there, what should happen. So it’s so, it’s extremely good. So this prayer covers all sentient beings, yourself and all sentient beings, so it’s wonderful, praying for everybody, everybody, not even one insect is left, not even one person left, devas, covers every, to stop all these problems for all sentient beings.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

Then also same, yourself and all family and all sentient beings, whenever death happens then to be born in your pure field. So you can think Amitabha Buddha’s pure land or whatever, to be born in a lotus, and then, Medicine Buddha pure land, whatever, then to receive the prediction from the Buddha.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja (second Medicine Buddha).]

Whatever prayer you have done in the past, then may it be actualized to me and all sentient beings right now, then those particular people that you have in the mind, so you pray for them.

Whatever prayer I do may it be actualized immediately without delay even a second.

Not just saying that you’re praying to, you’re asking, praying to this buddha, [Rinpoche gives the name of the buddha in Tibetan].

Then the rin po chhe dang da wa dang pä mä rab tu gyän pa khä pa zi ji dra yang kyi gyäl po has happily accepted your request.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

So again the offerings, that dedicated for sentient beings, now offer on their behalf, to the eight Medicine Buddhas, the bodhisattvas, then all the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, all the ten-direction holy objects then offer them. Then with the two hands prostrate to them, then towards the ten-direction Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, who is the guru, then the, offer the, prostrate them, make all the offerings to them, then all the ten-direction statues, stupas, scriptures, all the holy objects then, ?essence the guru, then, prostrate and make all the offerings to them.

Music offering.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

No trace of negative karmas left on the mental continuum.

Your mental continuum is totally pure.

Then rejoice. Next one rejoice in all the bodhisattvas’ merits.

So by rejoicing, those who haven’t learned yet, so just repeating, rejoicing is the easiest way to collect merit and collect, if one does practice then collect the most extensive merit. So Lama Tsongkhapa said in the Hymns of the Experience of the Path to Enlightenment, the rejoicing is the best one to collect, regards means of collecting merit. So easiest, it doesn’t need any particular performance, it’s just the mind, action of mind just think wherever you are. But if you do it, you collect inconceivable skies of merits.

So, if you rejoice in other sentient beings’ merits, if their level of mind is higher than yours, you get, how much they collect merit, that much half you can get, you collect. Then, now, if your level of mind is higher than theirs, then you collect double the merits what they collected merit, double than that. So there’s many sentient beings whose level of mind is lower than yours, so you collect, each time when you rejoice, you collect double merit, so much. And then, even you collect half the merit, for example, one bodhisattva’s one day merits, if you rejoice, the, you get half of what the bodhisattva collected in one day, half of that you, that much you collect merit. So without rejoicing, if you’re going to collect half the merits, it takes 13,000 years, it’s said by great enlightened being Pabongka, so it makes a huge difference. Without rejoicing it takes that many years, 13,000 years, but if you rejoice, then within a second you collect what a bodhisattva collects in one day, half.

So now, bodhisattva who collects merits is not just one, we rejoice that bodhisattva’s, all the past, present, and future merits, unbelievable, unbelievable. Now, there are numberless bodhisattvas, so we rejoice in all their merits, incredible, can’t imagine, so do that, “how wonderful it is, how wonderful it is,” okay?

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

Whatever prayer you have done in the past, may it be actualized to me and all sentient beings without delay even a second. Remember those people when you pray, then whatever prayer I do may it be actualized immediately.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

The offerings that which dedicated for sentient beings, given to sentient beings, now we offer on their behalf, so I’m not, so I repeat this time then I’m not going to repeat afterwards, so you should know.

All the offerings here, every single offerings here, including the lights up there, all in the nature of great bliss, then upstairs all the offerings, also water offerings outside, and then all the FPMT center gompas, all the offerings which are nature of great bliss, and all the offerings at Aptos house, Khachö Dechen Ling, all those, then Washington, Amitabha Buddha Pure Land, all the offerings, so every single flowers and lights, water offerings, food offerings, all that. Then offer to the eight Medicine Buddhas, the eight bodhisattvas, then the Dharma protectors, then think that each of them are all the gurus, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, and then all the ten-direction statues, stupas, scriptures, everything.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

Now rejoice all the Buddhas’ merits, the past, present, and future, the merits collected by Buddha, so by dividing ten, one, that much one collects.

Rejoice all the, there are numberless buddhas, all their merits.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

Now, [pause] dedicate the merits having recited, having heard, having recited the Buddhas’ names and so forth, did the seven limb practice, so dedicating the, oneself and all sentient beings then, to achieve all these things, to happen all this success.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

So, whatever prayer you have done in the past, may it be ripened to me and all sentient beings without delay even a second.

So remember those specific persons that you want to pray. Whatever prayer I do may it be ripened to me immediately.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

Making offerings, that which are already dedicated for sentient beings, offering on their behalf.

[pause]

Also, the outside the light offerings, upstairs, outside those Christmas lights, offer.

I forgot those nice lights.

Music.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

Confession, purified, not even a trace of negative karma is left, even negative imprint purified.

Now rejoice one’s own merit, all the past, present, and future, like before.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

So, how are we doing?

[OM AH HUNG (3x) then prayers for offering tea; Rinpoche drinks tea.]

So we’re just going to continue, so when you, those who are receiving tea, just drink, just keep on, so I just continue, okay?

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

So here, where it says, “I prostrate and make offering, so chhö do that means offering, that time, if you’re able to, you can think all these offerings and offer to this particular Medicine Buddha, it can be done also like that. So, then extra merits, extra cause of enlightenment and liberation from samsara, good rebirth, all the happiness of future lives, like that. Then there’s no question about this life.

Whatever prayer you have done, chhö dag gya tshö yang, whatever prayer you have done in the past, may it be actualized to me and all sentient beings without delay of even a second. Whatever pray I do may it be actualized immediately.

So, I drank too much. I don’t know maybe due to diabetes, I’m not sure, but so, I have to run.

Maybe you can continue, maybe you can just do it. So I think without break, maybe that’s okay, maybe now, if possible the offerings should be done until you’re finished, like that, and the rejoicing. The later, then rejoicing. The Indian pandits what they made then, Lama Atisha, Kadampa geshes, their merits, then the new Kadampa tradition, Lama Tsongkhapa, then to the, down to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the gurus, okay, can also do like that.

So maybe….

[Ven. Sophia continues to lead the puja while Rinpoche takes a break.]

[Rinpoche returns]

[Ven. Sophia: Medicine Buddha.]

Where?

[Ven. Sophia: Medicine Buddha prostration.]

Oh, yeah.

[Ven. Sophia: Prostration, offering and taking refuge.]

Yeah, do it. Put all your arms up. How much long arm you have.

[Ven. Sophia continues with puja.]

Medicine Buddha. Did you finish Medicine Buddha’s name?

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

So before, rejoice one’s own merit, and then next one is rejoice in all sentient beings’ merit, the next one is the bodhisattvas, rejoice in the bodhisattvas’ merit, so this must be bodhisattvas’ merit? That’s the third, this section. Huh? Buddhas’? Okay. Rejoice in buddhas’ merits, okay.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

So the next one, read it.

[Ven. Sophia recites in Chinese, then Rinpoche chants in Tibetan.]

The offering.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

Confession, purified.

Now rejoice the, all the, now rejoice in Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s merit, that for three countless great eons merits collected, practiced the six paramitas and sacrificed his own life and whole family, being born in a king’s family, numberless times. So all the past merits collected, and the three-time merits collected by Guru Shakyamuni Buddha, so rejoice.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

Now, offering.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

Confession and purification. Think one’s mental continuum is totally pure, no stains of negative karmas left, defilements.

Now rejoice the lineage lamas of the extensive, profound path, extensive path and the path of profundity, Manjushri and Maitreya Buddha, all those lineage lamas, the pandits, all their three-time merits.

So, actually we should also rejoice before to Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s, not only merits but all the qualities, realizations and extensive benefit for all sentient beings.

Limitless skies of qualities of the holy body, holy speech, holy mind; then, in every second enlightened numberless sentient beings, liberates numberless sentient beings from samsara and enlightens numberless sentient beings in every second, so rejoice for that.

So that’s what should be done before.

So now, here, the profound, the lineage lamas of the path of profundity and the extensive path. From Nagarjuna, Asanga, then all the pandits, all their three-time merits, rejoice.

And also merits that are being collected now and what will be collected in the future, rejoice. Then all their qualities, skies of qualities what they have, and extensive benefit to the sentient beings what they did, and what they are doing now, rejoice.

Through their texts, all their works, writings, their texts, then the based on Buddha’s teachings, the commentaries, so numberless sentient beings became enlightened from their texts, learning and studying and actualizing the path, and which is going to happen also future, so rejoice.

Same the Lama Atisha, all the Kadampa geshes, then, rejoice all their three-time merits. Past, all the merits they collected in the past, from beginningless rebirth, present and which will be collected in the future.

Rejoice their skies of qualities what they have, realizations.

Now rejoice extensive benefit what they did to sentient beings in the past, what they are doing now, what they will do in the future.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]

Meditate offering the dharmachakra and then the golden throne with _____ jewels, and then dedication, meditate on those.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja, including recitation of the Medicine Buddha mantra.]

So this is the last offering. Could be the very last. Who knows? So, all the offerings which are dedicated, which were dedicated to sentient beings, so we offer.

All these offerings are sentient beings’, belong to sentient beings. There’s nothing for you. So it’s very sad. Very depressed. So all these, so actually, quite small but very nice offering, very beautiful offering, actually I like very much. I wish that they are forever.

I hope that they are permanent.

So all these offerings, then, all the offerings upstairs, all the water offerings, and outside also there are many offerings, all the lights there and then, all the offerings in the FPMT centers’ gompas, all the extensive offerings, and the Kachoe Dechen Ling, Aptos house, all the offerings, and Washington, Amitabha Pure Land retreat the, all the extensive offerings there, all the thousands of lights and then the many flowers outside, inside, then the water offerings and food offerings, so like that, tea offerings, which are in the nature of infinite bliss, okay?

Now we offer to the Medicine Buddha, the holy Dharma, the bodhisattvas and Dharma protectors, then all the guru, all the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, all the ten-direction statues, stupas, scriptures, everything, so offer them.

Offer all the ten-direction Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, by thinking they are guru, and then ten-direction statues, stupas, scriptures offer them, by thinking they are guru, and all holy objects in this world by thinking they are all the guru.

All the holy objects, particularly the Nepal, Boudha stupa, there if you make offering and you pray, then all your wishes get succeed.

[Rinpoche continues with the Medicine Buddha Puja.]
