Day Two Part A: Benefits of Compassion; Three Types of Suffering; Dedications

Does anybody have questions?

Student: Rinpoche, yesterday you talked about when we ?become this mind of good heart, and then there’s no room for feeling, and so you’re trying to make your whole life, you’re trying to make your whole life dedicated to the wish to help others, and that with this mind, you said there’s no room for anything but joy.

But what do you do when you’re trying to develop that mind, but also you’re very aware of all the suffering around you, and that where we are in our practice it’s difficult to help others because we’re still trying to help ourselves, and so there’s a lot, maybe one feels a lot of frustration rather than joy, at a certain point, how does one counter, what kind of antidote can one have to countering that feeling of frustration in order to be able to feel that joy?

Rinpoche: Then that means the buddhas would have a lot of, all the buddhas would have the greatest, what is the word you used? Prostration.

Student: Frustration.

Rinpoche: Frustration, not prostration.

Student: Because buddhas are able to help, but as sentient beings, our ability is very limited to help, and so that’s the source of the frustration is how difficult it is to actually help others.
Rinpoche: Yeah, yeah, I think it’s, I mean, not having fully developed, not having stable realization, those, such as bodhicitta, the special attitude taking responsibility on yourself liberating others from all the suffering and causes, then bodhicitta.

Yes, yes, you’re right, yes, difficulties, frustrations, many things, but, say, unable to help. But still, I think there’s differences, still there’s differences, I think, mentally, that, and then, person who is totally, person who is totally egotistic or, having selfish mind, not attempting to practice, there’s still, there’s still differences, I think in the heart, there would be much more, the suffering would be, I think, the unhappiness, much greater, much greater in that person’s heart, because mistake of his own motivation, strong, the attachment clinging to this life and the self-cherishing thought, and so forth, so I think, fear, worry, problems, unhappiness, opposite to peace, which is opposite to peace, is much greater, I would think than the person who is, who don’t have realization, but on the way to developing, even you don’t have full method to help others, I think there’s still differences, there’s great difference between there, I think the attitude of the two people, so I think there will be, there will still have peace there, calm, there’s still peace, because as much as less there’s self-cherishing thought, so more peace there, and worldly concerns is less, therefore more peace, definitely, absence of those, in the absence of self-cherishing thought, with the thought of cherishing others, and then the, so as much less worldly concern there is, more peace, more satisfaction, more contentment, so there’s that peace. So, even though there’s, you feel that you don’t have full method to help others, even though that, but I think still there be big differences, I think like that.

But, what I would like to say is that, a person who doesn’t have any compassion to others, no feeling of others’ sufferings, no feeling of others’ sufferings, as long as you don’t suffer, as long as you don’t suffer, as long as yourself has everything, it’s okay, don’t think of others, you don’t have, no concern or no feeling for others’ sufferings, so, sometimes we, I mean, we could have that experience, and sometimes we don’t like, so, I mean, there are people like this, so whatever is happening in the world to others, so, as long as you’re okay, then it’s okay. Then you’re relaxed.

But then there’s another person who has compassion, who always thinks of others, and, who’s concerned of others, who thinks of others’ happiness and suffering, who is concerned to others, so I think, between those two people, so I think the person who has compassion to others, who feels others, the difficulties, who has concern, even can’t help much, I think this is much, much, much better, this is much better, I think this is much better, mentally, this person is, this means this person’s mind is more developed, the compassion is more developed to others, so you feel, you have concern of others, you feel the sufferings of others, then, whatever capacity you have you help, you use as much as you can, whatever capacity you have, because of compassion, because of the concern to others.

So, so I think, so this person will achieve enlightenment quicker, this person, who has concern for others, compassion, more compassion to other sentient beings, so, who has more concern to other sentient beings, so others’ needs, wants to help, so, even if one doesn’t have much capacity, however this person, who has such a quality of mind, achieve enlightenment quicker than the other person, that satisfied or, thinking that if I have everything, for me, comfort and material needs, so then you’re happy, no concern to others. So, this person’s mental level or attitude is extremely low, much more, you can say, more obscured. So even though the person is relaxed, I think the other person is much more fortunate, who has concern for others, compassion to others, as much as there’s compassion, that person is much more lucky, much more lucky person, that’s the real lucky person, lucky person, fortunate person, because from that compassion, even if it is small, but, from that, from that you get, you achieve everything from that, the, so always, so with that compassion, always in your daily life, you stay, you live your life sincerity and less harm to others, because there’s concern, so, you don’t harm others, abandon as much as possible.

So, and not only abandon more harm, there’s more benefit to others, as much as there is compassion you try to help what you can, whatever capacity you have, with the body, speech, and mind, so every day like that, every day that person the nature of the life is like that, so it brings, so, every day the person who, even not fully developed compassion to all living beings but who has that much compassion to others, so, in your daily life you create so much good karma, your, with the body, speech, and mind, the wholesome action or the positive action, the healthy action. By the way, in daily life, create so much good karma, cause of happiness, the unmistaken cause of happiness.

So as I mentioned yesterday, even the person doesn’t have, even if the person is a non-believer, no belief in reincarnation, karma, these things, but, has some, but the person’s ?mentality is more compassion to others, more concern to others, so then, so, even though that these times there’s no particular understanding or faith in reincarnation and karma, those subjects.

So, then, every day so many people at home, in the office, outside, wherever the person is, east, west, east, west, on the moon, or wherever, wherever it is, gives so much happiness to others, gives so much happiness to others, to many people, and the animals, not only human beings, animals, gives so much happiness. So life is really worthwhile, that person’s life is really worthwhile. Then, more and more get developed the compassion, and able to complete. So that, that, the compassion to sentient beings becomes, that becomes the root of bodhicitta, altruistic mind to achieve enlightenment for sentient beings, that is the door of the path to enlightenment.

So from the root, the compassion, then all the qualities you receive, skies of qualities, all the bodhisattva’s path, there are the five paths, ten bhumis, all those, higher and higher, unbelievable qualities, the eighth, ninth, tenth bhumis, those bodhisattvas, for us, it’s enlightened being, for us, it’s enlightened being, by looking at their qualities, unimaginable, unimaginable something that we cannot comprehend the, what they can do, they can manifest all sorts of forms for the sentient beings, bridges or water or whatever the need for sentient beings, able to manifest those bodhisattvas. Then, even each pores of the body, realms, and, so something totally, it doesn’t fit to our, this very limited mind, that, can’t comprehend, just unimaginable, most unimaginable, these bodhisattvas’ qualities. So all those, so in those pores the realms and then they pervade in those realms, however, something, so you achieve all this, and then, the buddha’s holy body, holy speech, holy mind has limitless skies of qualities, like limitless skies, like limitless sky, qualities. They have qualities which even the arhats who has also, they have clairvoyance, those, six types of clairvoyance, they, tenth bhumi bodhisattvas, tenth bhumi bodhisattvas who have unbelievable, unbelievable skies of qualities still they cannot see buddha’s secret qualities, secret actions, they can’t see. So, anyway, all these qualities of buddha, unbelievable, so it all comes from the root, that you will achieve all this, comes from your mind, your root, the root, the compassion, your compassion that generated to other sentient beings from the root of compassion, from where buddhas come from, everything. So, the compassion is the root of all the buddhas, buddhas’ qualities, compassion to sentient beings. So like that.

Then, the compassion, you the one person, compassion to other, compassion to other sentient beings, compassion to others, now from this, then not only able to succeed all the happiness, this life happiness, future, all the future lives’ happiness, then, ultimate happiness, the liberation from samsara, then full enlightenment, all that, as I mentioned before. Not only that, then, you, the one sentient being who has compassion, that, from this positive thought you are able to liberate, as I mentioned last night, in the hell realms there are numberless beings, there are numberless hell beings, most unimaginably suffering, so you are able to liberate all of them, there are numberless, there are numberless of them there, you are able to liberate everyone.

And then like that, you are able to liberate numberless sentient beings in the preta realm, suffering, unbearable, major suffering the hunger and thirst. So, however, for hundreds, thousands of years, can’t find even one spoon of food, can’t find even a drop of water, difficult to see even the wetness of the water, dampness, so you are able to liberate numberless of them from all those sufferings, so same.

Then there are numberless animals who are most unbearable, who have, who experience most unbearable sufferings, extremely fool and due to that, then many other sufferings arise, being eaten by another one, hunger and thirst, torture, so many things, so, compared to them, we don’t know their life, neither we have omniscience nor even clairvoyance, the, those, even what the Hindus, the, followers have, even they achieve five clairvoyance, five types of clairvoyance. Anyway, so, even without that, so then can’t see the, can’t really read their minds, can’t really see, so, you see beautiful from outside, the people see butterflies or the cats, so, the body outside, however, so, most unbearable. So, anyway, think, if you can really see, if we can really see their suffering, can read their minds, can really see their suffering, however, yourself like liberated, not liberated from delusion and karma, but compared to them, compared to them, at this time, compared to them, this short moment, you are liberated, like that. So just unimaginable differences, so this, this short time, short time, anyway, like liberated, but of course this is a very short time, very short time, could stop any day, any day it could stop, this, this incredible comfort, joy, I mean this freedom, this, can’t say how long this will last, can be stopped any day, any, can be stopped any day. So, this realization is very, extremely important, how you, incredible comfort, don’t have sufferings what they experience you don’t have now, those unimaginable sufferings, but I mean this is not forever, and you never know when this will end, this appearance, when this appearance, you have a human body, all this comfort, all this, when this will end, can’t tell, a very short time.

So the, even if we know the meditation techniques, how to practice patience, how to protect the mind, life, from anger, so forth, even one knows, even one knows the teachings, many techniques explained in the texts by Buddha, by those great pandits, and the great Tibetan, those highly attained beings, holy beings, however, but doesn’t mean, but just even intellectually one knows many, but not necessarily mean that you practice, that you are able to practice all the time, so not necessarily means that, so even one has the education, so doesn’t mean able to practice all the time, able to protect the mind from delusion, able to protect the mind from negative karma, harming yourself, harming others, doesn’t mean that. So, because the mind has been habituated, with delusion, the negative imprint, that, so, created negative karma from beginningless rebirth, from beginningless rebirth, even that omniscient mind cannot see the beginning, so, because of that, why it is not easy for many people, for most, why it’s so difficult, even one knows the techniques, but unable to even remember the practice. Even one knows, but at the time when there’s need to practice, difficult to remember. Maybe later, after everything happened, then remember. So, anyway, after everything is finished, done, so, anyway, after the work is done, after all the destruction is done, of the liberation, enlightenment, all the happiness, the destruction, then remember the technique. Anyway, I’m joking.

So anyway, so, yeah, habituation with the, from beginningless rebirth, so therefore in that way, so that’s why it’s so difficult even to remember and, that’s why most, because not easy, ?uneasy, but of course, like that, but of course, by continuing, by continuing the practice, try to remember, putting effort continuously, then, more and more able to remember, more and more able to practice, then more and more able to overcome delusion. Then, in the case of anger, even though it still arises, but very rare, but very rare compared to a few years ago, now anger arises, but very rare, but also it doesn’t last a long time, it’s just a very short time, very short time, and then very short time, then it disappears. So between from year to year, between a few years, you can see big differences if somebody is practicing, so like that. So, anyway, similar, so now then, say, less anger, even though arises from time to time, but lasts for a very short time, and then disappears. So like that, then after some time, there’s no anger arising, like that.

Like that, similar to other delusions, so, like that, so continuity, so the putting effort, continuity, years and years, then there’s development, you see development. Otherwise, if one try, try for a few months, and then there’s no continuity, so, become the same person as before, become the same person as before having met Dharma, before one has met Dharma, same person. So, then, so like this, then again try, for a short time, then long time, so anyway, so then, I mean it’s still better, less negative karma, because certain times you practice, retreat or practice so you watch the mind, so less negative karma, so still makes a huge differences, but the most times, it’s not there, most times the practice is not there, so then, mind is habituated with delusion, negative karma, so much more in that, so that’s, so therefore can’t see, so therefore cannot see achieve something in your life, difficult to see, realizations not there.

So, what I was going to say, so to finish this. So, same, then you liberate, from that compassion you have to others, liberate, eventually then liberate numberless human beings who are, oceans of sufferings of human beings experiencing, able to liberate, then, same, then suras, asuras, numberless beings, then the oceans of sufferings of their realms, so, able to liberate, as well as the intermediate state beings, numberless intermediate state beings, you are able to liberate.

Then, not only that, also same as I mentioned last night, so, [pause] so there are numberless universes, there are numberless universes, as not only explained by Buddha, but also scientifically explained, there are numberless universes, so there are numberless, there are human world in each universe, so all these human beings that, due to ignorance, lack of Dharma understanding, so, this precious human body is used to harm others, only to create negative karma with the, living the life with the ignorance, anger, attachment, the ignorance holding the true existence, the I, aggregates, phenomena, the self-cherishing thought, so totally overwhelmed, totally like drowned in the ocean, like drowned in the ocean, completely, totally, overwhelmed, covered, overwhelmed, like this, can’t see any life other than that, can’t see life, you can live life different from that, you can’t see, at all.

So, if there’s life in this world, then you ?have to, they are like that. So anyway, you are able to liberate, what I am saying here, you generate compassion, able to liberate all those beings from all those oceans of suffering of human beings, and as I mentioned, as you see on the Discovery Channel, Discovery Channel, anyway, the animal program, the, in the ocean, all those beings eaten by another one, just totally the life is lived in fear, while looking for food you get eaten by others, or you escape, all the life is like this. So, when you go by airplane, when you look down, it looks so peaceful, the water, it looks the water so peaceful, but if you think inside, most terrifying, most terrifying, so pitiful, so pitiful, most terrifying.

So anyway, so you who have generated compassion to others, gradually able to liberate all those beings from all those unimaginable sufferings, everyone, and then everyone bring to enlightenment, the numberless hell beings, hungry ghosts, animals, human beings, suras, asuras, numberless beings from each realm, and bring them to enlightenment, so it comes from your compassion, comes from your compassion. So your compassion, you the one person’s compassion to others is the most, is the wish-fulfilling jewel, it’s like the, the external example, what you can use, wish-fulfilling jewel is nothing, from, wish-fulfilling jewel doesn’t give enlightenment, liberation, can’t achieve from that. So, but why in the teachings used that as an example is because in the external material, the highest, the most precious one that is the wish-granting jewel, that, so, in the past, wheel-turning kings or the, so those who have a lot of merit able to find that, able to possess that, then they clean that in three ways, then they put on the banner, banner which is on the roof, on the fifteenth day, like that, and then whatever they pray, all the material possessions, all the external material possessions, whatever they ask, it gets materialized. So, because that person has so much merit, and the power of that jewel, so able to, whatever wish you generate to receive any external material possessions you get materialized. So therefore, this is the most precious one, even though it is nothing, the quality is nothing compared to your compassion, but this is only what you can find externally for example, like that.

So, anyway, your compassion is, so fulfilling all your wishes, and that makes you to fulfill the wishes of all sentient beings’ happiness, so you become wish-fulfilling towards numberless sentient beings, to achieve all the happiness, to achieve all the happiness up to enlightenment, okay.

So, anyway, so going back, I was just using as an example, person who thinks he has everything and no concern to others, no compassion to others, relaxed, no worry, I mean, towards others, and then, the other one person who has compassion to others, concern, so I’m, here, using what difference is there. Meaning of life, even though you can’t help much to others now, but the meaning of life, one is like iron, one is like kaka, poo-poo, one is like poo-poo, one is like gold; one is poo-poo, one is gold.

So, anyway, so, it’s a great thing, anybody who has compassion to others it’s a wonderful thing. It is, then especially by meditating, easy to develop that, there’s some compassion there so easy to develop, so like that. So very fortunate person.

Okay, we’ll stop, sorry. So I owe a lot of baksheesh to her. Do you know baksheesh? Bribe, it means bribe.

Hsieh, hsieh [thank you.]

So, just to mention three things, then stop there.

So, anyway, so my bad habit talking a long time, so anyway, so I think it’s very good opportunity to, when I speak English, those who don’t understand English, it’s time for you to meditate, it’s your meditation session. Then, when Sophia speaks her holy Chinese language, then, then those who do not understand Chinese, those English speaking ones, then time for meditation session, take the time to meditate, so that, so then you use the time to meditate, yourself to be liberated and to achieve enlightenment, to liberate numberless sentient beings, and to bring them in full enlightenment, so you do that meditation.

So, here, three things what I’m going to say, since the compassion subject was brought up, so, without compassion, so, yeah, first mention this. In this world, many times happened somebody who is very influential and who has power, but lack of compassion, killed many millions of, many millions of people by one person, killed many millions of people, different times happened on this earth, historically, so, that’s lack of compassion, the one person who has power, influence, power, killed many millions of people, so, so that doesn’t count the number of animals, insects, burned or killed, by bombs or by, destruction, those without, numberless, without counted that, just only human beings, many millions. So, so that’s lack of compassion, so that one person didn’t have compassion, so how much destruction happens to the world, unbelievable, unbelievable, unbelievable. Even after a long time, due to those destructions, so the, chemicals, whatever they, still many people get sick from that.

Anyway, so, therefore, if you, if oneself generated compassion, developed compassion, then, so, in other lives, if not this life, in other lives, that you, the one person, destroyed the world or killed many millions of people, human beings, so those doesn’t happen in the future lives, in the future lives.

So even this life, as I mentioned before, the happiness what it gives to the other sentient beings, directly to, from you to others, this life, then indirectly, so however, dedicating the merits and praying, trying to make preparation in the mind to be able to benefit for all sentient beings, to be able to liberate all sentient beings, to be able to liberate them, all sentient beings, making preparation in the mind, developing the potential, so this is amazing even now, what you are able to do by having compassion, so like that. So sooner or later bring the numberless sentient beings, you liberate them and bring them to enlightenment, so, the compassion makes you prepare, so that, because of compassion to others, to enlighten other sentient beings, so you do one sadhana, you do one buddha’s meditation, deity’s meditation practice, sadhana, within that there’s incredible, powerful means to purify the mind, to purify the mistakes of the mind, defilements, to cease, you plant so much seed even during one sadhana, unbelievable, make preparation, power it builds. So, sooner or later, then the, actualize the path and to have all those perfect qualities of the deity, that can do perfect work towards numberless sentient beings, sooner or later, your mind, you are perfectly qualified, by this meditation, sadhana. That’s just one example, that’s one example.

Then, I think, because of your compassion, you want to benefit other sentient beings, and therefore you want to learn Dharma. So, education of the whole path to enlightenment, education of all the true suffering, true cause of suffering, cessation, path, that, the ______, then, the whole thing about, means of achieving enlightenment, the whole thing, so you educate and then, by practicing, develop the experience,.

So, like that, so what I was saying before, so by developing your heart in this compassion, so in the future lives, so you don’t become, or maybe in this life, so you don’t become like those, unbelievable, I mean cause disaster this world, other universes, anyway, so doesn’t become.

So, however, you the one person having compassion then you stop giving harm to others, stop, it doesn’t allow to harm others, so numberless sentient beings, numberless hell beings, hungry ghosts, animals, human beings, suras, asuras, intermediate state beings, they receive so much peace, absence of harm, so much peace they receive from you, and on top of that, compassion makes you to benefit others, okay, cause happiness, benefit others, so again, then, to develop wisdom, the realizations, the path to cessation of the suffering, the path to enlightenment, so, continue and complete the realizations. So, the state of omniscience, makes to, cause to achieve the state of omniscient mind. So, the compassion causes you to benefit others, to benefit numberless sentient beings, deeper and deeper and deeper, then ultimate, then, bring them to enlightenment, so your compassion makes you to do this, so like that.

So, however, the other thing, so therefore this, so therefore this is most, the compassion, generating compassion to other sentient beings is the most important practice in the life, most important practice in the life, the real meaning of your life, most important practice in the life.

So, now, without, now next one, without compassion, then, even how much wisdom is developed, the highest what you can achieve is arhatship, just mere cessation of the suffering of samsara, and the cause, karma and delusion, just that, nothing higher than that you can achieve without compassion. So how much wisdom is developed, that, what you achieve. So you cannot do, still you can’t do, cannot do perfect work towards sentient beings, so, it becomes a great obstacle.

So, daily life, I might have mentioned before but in daily life, your living your daily life with compassion to others, or without compassion, without compassion, so, when you live your daily life with compassion to others, you become the source of happiness of others, not only source of all your happiness, not only source of all your happiness, day-to-day life, day-to-day life peace and happiness, not only that, as I mentioned before, happiness in all the future lives, how many times you have to be born in samsara, die and reborn, so happiness in those lives, and then ultimate happiness, enlightenment, however, but, besides that, so that person who lives the daily life with compassion, compassion to others, source, that person becomes source of happiness of others, source of happiness of sentient beings, source of happiness in this world, source of happiness of your family, source of happiness of the family, in the office, or family, wherever the person is, animals, people, who are around, that becomes source of happiness to others, so like that.

So therefore, in our daily life, it’s very important to bring compassion when you talk, when you talk to other people, just, just anybody, just anybody, any, for the dogs and cats, they don’t, I don’t know, may not understand, maybe from some external, some external gestures, some external, maybe they ?learn something, anyway, by giving food, so the, maybe, I’m not sure, anyway, but, but anybody, in the daily life, the, try to keep the mind, remember to bring compassion, so, whatever ?causes you’re doing, but, try to bring compassion. So, it’s very important to the other person to feel that, so I think it’s very good to inspire, to plant seed.

So, I think, so we’ll stop. We’ll stop there, okay.

So, one more thing.

So, we, suffering what we see to others is a very, extremely gross, not even all the sufferings, we don’t see the, even the suffering of pain we don’t see completely, only some. Then we don’t see the suffering, we don’t see others suffering, the, how the samsaric pleasure, temporary pleasure, samsaric pleasure which is temporary, temporary pleasure or samsaric pleasure, anyway, so, we don’t see that as suffering.

And then now there’s more, the [Tibetan] pervasive, compounding suffering, so there’s the basis of all those, from where those two other sufferings come from, pervasive, compounding suffering. So, the body and mind, which is in the nature of suffering, which is under the control of karma and delusions, contaminated seed of delusion, which compounds problems in this life to the body and mind, and which compounds the problems of future lives, which causes rebirth in future lives, compound the future suffering. So, that’s the foundation. So, without seeing those two other, those two sufferings, and then just what we see is the suffering of, most of us what we see, what we think is suffering of others is the suffering of pain, just that, maybe even that not completely.

So therefore, now, it’s just unimaginable, there’s much more than that, all this samsaric pleasure which is only in the nature of suffering, and then the pervasive, compounding suffering. So the question is, the arya bodhisattvas, whether they have frustration or not, whether the buddha has frustration or not, whether the buddha has frustration or not, so that’s good to, that’s, analyze, okay, whether the buddha has frustration or not, because suffering is just unimaginable, okay, so, buddha can see everything, we don’t see completely all the suffering, so, I mean, anyway, so like that, endless those, who have renunciation of samsara, so they, renunciation of not only suffering of pain, but renunciation even to the suffering of change, all the samsaric pleasure which doesn’t last, which cannot be increased, which doesn’t last, then it becomes suffering of pain afterwards, then pervasive compounding suffering, so, I’ve forgotten why I’m talking, I’ve forgotten while I’m talking, so anyway, I don’t remember.

So anyway, so, that meditator, then, has realization, like a person who fell in the fire, or a person who’s caught in a prison, no interest even for one second to be in prison, constantly to be out, so that, so, understanding all those sufferings.

So anyway, now you talk about the higher bodhisattvas, and then buddhas, so they see, directly see all this, so that’s good to check.

However, a person who has compassion, who as much as possible tries to stop to harm others, benefit others, all the buddhas, bodhisattvas, they’re with that person, they are behind that person. Anybody who has compassion, in daily life to, doing this, engaging in this, to not harm as much as possible, and to benefit, so, all the buddhas, bodhisattvas are with this person, behind this person.

But, however, so, in this session, anyway, the main thing is, so, without compassion, life is empty, without compassion, life is empty, without compassion to others, life is empty, so, so how to make life meaningful, useful, beneficial is by compassion, by having compassion to others, so like that, okay. So that’s all our heart practice. There are so many practices, but that should be the heart, that should be the heart, then everything comes, then everything comes, okay, so that’s all, then all, okay stop.

Did you finish? [Ven. Sophia: I finished.]

Dag gi ji nye sag päi ge wa di….

Jang chhub sem chhog rin po chhe….

Due to all the three-time merits collected by me and by others, may the, that which is empty from its own side, may the I, who is empty from its own side, achieve Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s enlightenment, which exists, but which is empty from its own side, and lead all the sentient beings, who exist but who are empty from their own side, to that enlightenment, which exists but which is empty from its own side.

Thank you, thank you. Hsieh, hsieh.
