Teachings at Amitabha and White Tara Initiations and Retreat (Audio and Unedited Transcripts)

Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave these teachings during Amitabha and White Tara initiations and a White Tara retreat at Shakyamuni Center, Taichung, Taiwan, February 18-21, 2007. The teachings include lung  (oral transmission) of the Amitayus mantra and the long-life sutra. 

Please note: the teaching was being translated into Chinese and while we have edited those sections out, you may still occasionally hear the Chinese interpreter's voice in the background. 

Bodhisattva Vows, Amitabha Practice and Pure Land

... Dugyu Migye Dorje... so this initiation practice is directly from Amitabha Buddha. Also Chenrezig, Vajrapani, directly. I think here you need to visualise the Lama, Amitabha Buddha, same in front, the middle one Amitabha Buddha, then you can visualise right side Chenrezig, left side Vajrapani.

Now, the bodhisattva vow, if you have not taken bodhisattva vow in the past then you cannot take entering vow now, then you can take wishing vow. Wishing vow avoiding four black dharma and practising four white dharma. Even you cannot take this, if you are unable to take this then at least you should think, generate a strong motivation that I am going to practise more compassion towards other sentient beings than before. At least should have that determination.

So please repeat the prayer of Taking Refuge, and then taking the bodhisattva vow. Those who have taken in the past can take again, it makes pure what has been degenerated, to restore, and what has not been degenerated it makes to increase, by taking again.

So, the Lama, Amitabha Buddha, then all the lineage lamas of this initiation emitting there, from Amitabha Buddha, then the, His Holiness Chobgye Trijang Rinpoche. and all the lamas, then with the whole heart you rely on Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, ok?

Next one is confessing, so think ‘I am confessing all the negative karmas collected with body, speech and mind from beginningless rebirth up till now.” While you are reciting this then think everything is purified completely, nothing, no trace of the negative karma is left on the mental continuum.

Next one is rejoicing so while you are reciting, repeating this prayer feel great happiness in your heart, all the merits collected in the past, the present merits, merits collected in the future. Then after that you feel great happiness having collected merits three times by other sentient beings and by buddhas.

So we are going to do the shortest way so that’s the last words saying the extra verse: Sangye jangchub.yi gyi zung.

So for the sake of sentient beings for myself to achieve enlightenment I am going to take the bodhisattva vow.

I talk a lot but then left out, actually talked about the motivation but didn’t get to say the beginning of the initiation. But anyway most of you know, heard lam-rim and have received initiation so many times. So you must have generated bodhicitta to receive enlightenment for sentient beings. Taking the initiation is not for oneself but for the sake of each and every other sentient beings, for their happiness, for them to achieve enlightenment. Therefore to achieve enlightenment I am going to take the Amitabha “long-life and attaining the pure-land initiation.” So think like that.

Here even you have bodhicitta realisation, but if you don’t live in the bodhisattva vow you cannot achieve enlightenment with just alone the realisation of bodhicitta, without living in the bodhisattva vow you cannot achieve enlightenment so therefore you must take bodhisattva vow to achieve enlightenment, to be able to enlighten all sentient beings. Therefore I am going to take the bodhisattva vow. Also taking vow think in this way. Whichever vow you are taking. Then those who cannot take for the first time, cannot take the vow, in case there is somebody, then think I am going to generate more compassion to other sentient beings than before. From now on I am going to generate more compassion for others.

At the third repetition those taking the vow think ‘I have received the bodhisattva vow in the presence of the lama - that you meditated the inseparability - in the presence of all the lineage lamas. All the buddhas, bodhisattvas gathered around like clouds gather in the sky.’

Think, since as the bodhisattva vow is taken then as is mentioned in the Bodhisattvacaryavatara by the great bodhisattva Shantideva, that you collect, in every second you collect limitless skies of merits, as soon as the bodhisattva was taken. So feel great happiness by this, by taking the bodhisattva vow it made my life so meaningful, most productive, most beneficial for all sentient beings. So then, as i usually mention, that every day, as soon as the bodhisattva vows are taken, every day the merits increase millions of times, whatever merit you collect.

So in these days, today is the first day of Buddha performing miracle power, one of the holy deeds, from the 12 deeds one of the holy deeds, taming the sentient beings, the suffering sentient beings. So the Buddha’s days, performing the 12 holy deeds, this is performing the miracle power to tame the sentient beings, this is one of the great ones. So every day during these 15 days whatever practices you do it increases 100 million times - purification or collecting merits, or whatever. So one prostration becomes, all the prostrations to the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, one becomes 100 million, one mantra becomes 100 million, one light offering becomes 100 million. If you read Dharma texts, such as recite Heart Sutra or Diamond Cutter Sutra or Arya Sanghata Sutra, Golden Light Sutra or whatever, those most precious holy texts that collect extensive merits and purify all those heavy negative karmas, it becomes 100 million. So whatever practice one does it increases 100 million, especially in these days. So this time we have opportunity for practising days including today 15 days. Other times it is just only one day. So unbelievable opportunity - so this is the reason why the retreat, practice for purification and long life, so it was arranged according to these Buddha’s special days. So the reason is for that.

So it is most wise to, specially, normally one doesn’t take the opportunity or doesn’t have freedom to do, then such as these Buddhist days and especially these 15 days you have opportunity, unbelievable opportunity for 15 days. Therefore should attempt to make prostrations, make offerings, whatever the various practices, purification, collecting merits, meditating on the path, meditating on emptiness, meditating on bodhicitta or whatever - should put effort as much as possible, as many as possible in these practices, whatever one can.

Especially, also rejoice that there are so many sentient beings who practises, who collect so much merit, so you rejoice, especially this practice of rejoicing. How many other sentient beings rejoice in your merits, your merits become double every time you rejoice in your own merits. When you rejoice in other sentient beings, including bodhisattvas and buddhas, when you rejoice in them, there are numberless sentient beings, even the bodhisattvas are numberless, buddhas are numberless, so you collect more merit, much more, you collect double merit, if you rejoice other beings merit whose level of mind is lower than yours. If the other beings level of mind is higher than yours then you get half of how much they’ve collected in merits in one day, then half that much you collect. For example, bodhisattva, as mentioned by great enlightened Pabongka if you rejoice then one bodhisattva’s one day merit you get half of that much quantity, half that much you collect in one second, but if you don’t rejoice, to be able to collect that much merit, one bodhisattva’s one day merit, the half of that merit, to collect then it takes tens of(?) thousand years. So Pabongka Rinpoche’s giving some idea how long it takes time to collect that much merit without rejoicing.

Here now you think there are numberless bodhisattvas, numberless buddhas, numberless other sentient beings, so you can imagine how much merit we will collect by rejoicing.

Therefore think “my life become so fruitful,” feel great happiness by all this opportunity. Then last one, taking bodhisattva vow, living in this, is my offering for the world peace - your service, your dedication, what you offer for all sentient beings, particularly this world, world peace. Feel great happiness OK?

Now creating the base for the actual body of the initiation. That involves the vajra disciple, yourself, to visualise yourself into deity, so here Amitabha Buddha, then right-side Chenrezig and left-side Vajrapani. Visualise like that. Those who haven’t received, according to the basic scripture of tantra you can’t, if you haven’t received any other higher tantra, no lower tantra great initiation, then you can’t visualise yourself as deity. You can visualise in the front to receive blessing but yourself cannot be generated into deity. So you are qualified only if you have received the great initiation, either highest tantra or lower tantra.

But where it is Guru Shakyamuni Buddha, like we receive in the centres, or the, people who are beginning practitioners practising meditation, as far as Shakyamuni Buddha, Denmo Locho Rinpoche said it is OK, if you haven’t received a great initiation you can visualise yourself as Guru Shakyamuni Buddha because Buddha is the founder of the present Buddhadharma so Rinpoche said might be OK to visualise Shakyamuni Buddha. So even if you have not received any of the great initiations. So this is according to Rinpoche, Rinpoche permitted to beginner practitioners practising meditation they can visualise themselves as Shakyamuni Buddha, you doing practice of Shakyamuni Buddha yoga, guru-yoga like that. Otherwise like Medicine Buddha or others, same, it will be same case as Amitabha Buddha, for that Rinpoche said you need a great initiation to visualise yourself as that deity.

So whoever received a great initiation in the past, either lower tantra or higher tantra, now you can visualise yourself as Amitabha Buddha, with the two other deities. Then you visualise OM at crown, throat AH, HUM at the heart then beams emitted away, invoked from the pure-land Amitabha Buddha.

So Amitabha begging-bowl, inside filled with transcendental nectar. Then Amitabha begging-bowl filled with the long-life pills. Above this think Amitabha, Chenrezig, Vajrapani seated then that is absorbed within you then you become fortunate to be reborn in the Amitabha pure-land and fortunate to have all the enjoyments of pure-land. In this, the long life milk nectar is mixed with the very precious long life pill from Kyabje Trulshi Rinpoche, head of the, Nyingma lama who is guru also of His Holiness Dalai Lama, from whom i also took teachings. One of the great, great holy beings of this world, so Rinpoche’s long life pill, every year Rinpoche goes to Maru Tikha, Nepal, maybe near India, Maru Tikha where Padmasambhava achieved the immortal realisation. So Rinpoche goes there end of every year to do long life retreat for HH Dalai Lama, for HH’s long life. For that Rinpoche goes there every year to do retreat. So Rinpoche, retreat time, went there to do retreat. It is a very powerful place, there is Padmasambhava’s long life vase. Whatever you pray for there you get success. The Tibetan common people don’t know what to pray, so when they go there those who don’t receive children go there to receive children and after they have made prayer there they go back home, receive children and then come back to thank. They come back to Padmasambhava’s long life vase, this stone, they come to thank. So Rinpoche did long life retreat there and made pills, mixed with holy water from there, something like that. Rinpoche blessed the pills. So it is very precious, Rinpoche did retreat with this long life pill. Mixed it with the holy water from there.

Also Chopgye Trijang Rinpoche’s inner offering pill, nectar – extremely, most precious, that which Pabongka highly commended for inner offering to receive lineage from Sakya. So this is the best one. That which blesses the mind, which is used for inner offering and to bless one’s own mind, which is used for that. So this is mixed also with that pill.

So take the long life pills home to the family or other people, good for others to take. Offer to yourself then offer to others. So now dedicate the merits of having received the initiation. You think your mind, “Due to these merits may i be born in Amitabha’s pure land at the time of death.” With that thought please repeat this prayer.

What it is saying is that immediately the death happens, to be born in the blissful Amitabha pure land where there are limitless qualities, wonderful incredibly joy and happiness, innumerable qualities, where there is Amitabha surrounded by Chenrezig, Vajrapani and innumerable buddhas and bodhisattvas ------, without interruption to the life, immediately to be born there, then to be able to see Amitabha Buddha, “May i be able to see Amitabha Buddha, by my having done this prayer may all the buddhas and bodhisattvas, please all the buddhas and bodhisattvas bless to happen this without any obstacle.” So repeat the last prayer of the prayer.

Repeat this:

Om vajra diwa awa bodhi neya soha

Now you have received the initiation, now it is completed. From the mantra ------ the Undying, the King of the Immortal Drum Sound, at the western side there is Amitabha pure land, the fully-enlightened one is abiding, there is the limitless life Buddha, whoever recites that name you will be born there in Amitabha’s pure land. At the time of death you will see the sign, the bhikshus, sangha, you will see at the time of the death, the sign that shows you will be born in Amitabha’s pure land.

So however, tomorrow or day after, during the retreat, thought to do the oral transmission of the long life sutra as the benefits are mentioned there, by reciting Amitabha, the limitless life buddha’s reciting the name, the benefits it has. I will do the lung of that text, which has inconceivable, unimaginable benefit, by writing, printing, by writing. It is one of the causes for great success. So for success of the Maitreya Project and others. In Nalanda, arranged for the Nalanda monks to print every week the Long Life Sutra to help all the projects, so this is their offering, every week they print. Besides that also separately quite a few times. So to write this is unbelievable merit. In the past in Mongolia, like that, i already have at least two texts from Mongolia, written with pearls, turquoise, either ruby or, coral, silver, gold, there are a few – each line is different colour, jewels, they wrote. At least I have two texts like that. There are so many in Mongolia, because of the unbelievable benefit it has they write in different jewels. Anyway, to do lung, oral transmission of that is very good, very powerful means to have long life, to read that text. Mountains of negative karma get purified. So it is another method for those people who cannot find job, or have many difficulties in life, to print that, to write that. So that is very beneficial to create lots of merit.

So here: I prostrate to the – normally i recite the Tathagata, Saviour Amitabha, the limitless light Buddha, i prostrate. Then the same, same name – Limitless Life, Limitless Life Buddha or the Unimaginable Life Buddha, I prostrate. I mentioned before. So here in the text it is shorter: I prostrate to the Limitless Light Buddha, or I prostrate to the Unimaginable Light Buddha, Sangye Amitabha(?). Then, I prostrate to the Unimaginable Life – previously it was Light now it is Life – Buddha. Life Saviour, it says here. (Tib) ------ here in the text is tathagata, so recite that.

So if you recite this one mala, then at the end “May i be reborn in Amitabha’s pure land.” If you recite this every day you will see Amitabha Buddha in the intermediate stage and then born in Amitabha’s pure land. This is due to the prayer of Amitabha Buddha, that Guru Shakyamuni Buddha explained in many of the texts.

So please repeat this prayer:

“Whatever advice is given I will do it.”

Dedicate the merits, of having received this initiation and granted, due to all the three time merits of self and others, bodhicitta to be generated within in one’s own heart, and one’s own family members and the hearts of all the students, all the benefactors and so many of those who sacrifice their lives to the organisation doing service to others, those who ----------, or doing service, to be generated in the heart of all sentient beings, particularly in the hearts of all the leaders of the world and particularly in the hearts of all the Muslims, and so forth, all the people who have the thought to harm others, to harm the world – bodhicitta to be generated in their hearts without delaying even a second.

Then dedicate all the merits for His Holiness to have a long life. Then dedicate all the merits for all the holy wishes to success immediately.
