... a little bit late, outside, maybe a little bit, starting to get a little bit dark, so, but I think still we can try. [pause]
So, when we walk, when you go from here, the meditation that is the, what I explained the other night, the meditation on emptiness. So, at first you ask question to yourself, “What am I doing?” “I’m walking,” you know. Why I believe, why I say I’m walking, nothing else, nothing else, except the body, aggregates, the body, is walking, doing the action of walking, okay, think that.
Then, that’s it. Nothing else. So very important the reason, so your focus, concentration, on the reason, the aggregates, the body, is walking.
So, the I itself, what exists, that which is walking is just nothing, it’s not nonexistent but it’s what is a mere imputation of the mind, so totally change, the view of the I, your view of I, totally changed. The previous one is the object to be refuted, the false I, which appeared and it has been believed, what you have been believing from beginningless rebirth, basically, so like that.
So, now here, it’s totally changed, so you see the, this, not that there’s no I at all, there is, but it’s totally, it’s unbelievable, unbelievable subtle, so subtle, unbelievably subtle. What it is and how it exists. So then you go to the aggregate, then, so like that, from aggregates, otherwise it will take a lot of time, so from aggregates, then, as I already explained last night so you follow, remember that. From there down to the atoms, particles of atoms, particles of atoms, particles of atoms. So, you can do the meditation, just the dependent that the I exists, with the first meditation, the I, there’s no real I, but it’s, something extremely unbelievably subtle, self, so, you mainly focus on the base, aggregates, I’m walking. Then, with the awareness that self is extremely, that’s mere imputation, so, you can just do that, it’s very important so you can do that hours, when you go for a walk, can do that. That’s unbelievable, unbelievable worthwhile, most powerful. Then, these many hours of walk it becomes antidote, remedy, antidote to samsara, and all the oceans of samsaric suffering, and cause, the delusion and karma, it becomes antidote, and it become antidote, direct remedy to the root of samsara, the ignorance, it becomes the most powerful medicine for the sickness of the mind, the ignorance, so, the root of samsara, the ignorance, what makes to die, die and then again reborn, and then again experiencing all the sufferings over and over, which we did numberless times in the past, in these realms. So that ignorance, so this is the antidote to that. So, most powerful medicine to heal, to eliminate the sickness of the mind, the ignorance, the root of all the sufferings.
So, anyway, can do that but also, as I explained last night, then form aggregates, down to subtle atoms, subtle atoms, then, particles of atoms, then particles of atoms, and then, totally empty, you think, mere imputation, so nothing exists from its own side. So while you’re walking then you have awareness, everything is empty down to the particles of atoms, awareness in that.
You can do that, and the other one is, next one is, then, up to the self everything is mere imputation, mere imputation, merely imputed, so with, the second thing is, while you’re walking, so, like this. So something extremely subtle, nothing solid, nothing real one, existing from its own side, nothing real one, there’s nothing real one, so while you’re walking, like that.
The third thing, then, the ?all, the hallucination, that we have something real, everything real, existing from its own side, so, not merely imputed by mind. Then, with the awareness that this is hallucination, all these are hallucination, from the self, aggregates, everything, down to the self, then seconds of consciousness, split-seconds of consciousness, so like that, finer and finer, so all this which is merely imputed by mind, so nothing exists from its own side. So, anyway, so the third one is, all what, something real appearing, all these, not merely imputed by mind, so all these are hallucination, total hallucination, object to be refuted, gak cha. So your mindfulness paying, mindfulness of the gak cha, object to be refuted, something that which is false.
So you can see that you can do meditation two ways, like that. However, whatever, so anyway, basically which, any of these, what you are meditating is meditating on emptiness. But still, you need to hear, I mean this subject, I mean, ?I have an idea, just, just I know only two or three words, words to repeat. So, but there are so many texts on this, so many texts, commentaries, root texts and commentaries, so many, that the monks they study in the monasteries, nowadays also nuns, so, not in Tibet, but now His Holiness asked the nuns also to study philosophy, so they also can become geshes, gesheness.
So, anyway, so, I’ll tell you the last one, the third one, so, if you believe, if you let your mind hold on this, whatever appeared is true, if you let, if you do that, then that is cause of samsara. So all your concept, all this is true, then become cause of samsara. The minute when you let your mind put, entrust this is true, then becomes the cause of samsara, cause of all those problems, death, and rebirth, old age, sickness, I mean, the whole suffering, becomes the cause of that. What makes you die, the cause of dying.
So, but then, instead of that, instead of trusting, instead of believing this is real, true, then you change your mind, you think different, you think total opposite, different but total opposite, so all this is false, all this is hallucination, that which is hallucination, all this is false, which is false. So looking at false which is false. So far from beginningless rebirth, we have been believing which is false is real, so that’s why always we die, reborn, die, reborn, suffer continuously. You don’t liberate, you don’t get liberated from samsara, you don’t get to liberate others, so always just suffering from beginningless rebirth.
So, therefore, now, to liberate yourself, to liberate others, now we have to think differently, we have to look at this false view, this, all this appearing not merely labeled by mind, then, existing from its own side, it’s false, this isn’t true, which is not true, then you think this is not true, look at it not true. That which is hallucination, look at it hallucination. That which is false, look at it hallucination that which is hallucination. Look at it as false which is false, okay.
So, thinking exactly what it is. So when our mind think it’s not true, then that totally opposite to ignorance, then that becomes the cause to achieve liberation, that leads to liberation, very subtle, so if somebody thinks that it breaks samsara, it becomes like an atomic bomb to samsara, the continuity of the aggregates, caused by karma and delusion, contaminated aggregates caused by karma and delusion, okay.
So, yeah, that’s, so meditating on emptiness, so the minute, I mean emptiness that, no conventional truth appearing, just only emptiness, this ?me ga, I’m not sure how, I haven’t got yet the English translation. So, I mean, that’s one ?meditation, but however, if you, the conclusion is, in our life, if you say you are meditating on emptiness or you’re studying emptiness or, for years and years and years, but, you always believe it’s true, your mind, in everyday always believes it’s true, everything is true. So all these, as I mentioned yesterday, from the aggregates down to the atoms, split-seconds of consciousness and split atoms, so, all these true, hundred percent believing, then there’s no meditation on emptiness that, that’s you’re maybe meditating on the words of emptiness, but not actually meditating on emptiness, words of emptiness, that you’re reciting the words of emptiness, but not actually meditating on emptiness, your mind is not touching emptiness, your mind is constantly become ignorance, cause of samara, ?continuously.
So, that’s one thing, so try, then, I think it’s a little bit late now, become dark, but anyway, so when you come back, I thought to maybe change, when you come back. When you come back then Zen meditation, Zen , Zen or Bonpo or Zen , anyway, so, anyway, Zen meditation, Zen meditation, that there’s no I, that there’s no self, there’s no place, there’s no meditation, there’s nothing , but I think you have dinner .
So, anyway, so come back with nothing. Anyway, just joking. So, anyway, we’ll do a little bit, then maybe it can be done another, maybe tomorrow, and earlier so that can go farther, otherwise, maybe nighttime, people might think you are doing demonstration. You’re doing very silent demonstration, maybe to the birds or insects in the forest, ?show meditation for them. Them to understand about Tibet.
So, anyway, so, come back, when you come back, come back like this: with bodhicitta, so, like this, okay. So, okay, like this, so, all the past, present, all the past, “past” doesn’t mean from birth, only that, “past” from beginningless rebirth, all the happiness you had, and all the present happiness, all the future happiness of samsara, and then the ultimate liberation from oceans of samsaric suffering and causes, and enlightenment, so, all the three-time happiness that I experience, so came, I received by the kindness, [GL, RL over a sudden loud noise in the sound system], I think it’s very good, this is very good for meditation , to, it’s like chöd practice, the slaying the ego, there’s a special practice, so that one. This one is to create, to invite the spirits and then, that they show all kinds of violence, ?total _______ to you, all kinds of disturbance, so, and then at that time, then you have, then your ego, object of ignorance becomes very, then, it affects to this, then, like balloon, [Rinpoche blows] you blow, become bigger and bigger, so then, you’re supposed to meditate on emptiness, so it’s a way to recognize the object of ignorance, quicker, easy, quicker, then you’re able to realize emptiness quicker, so the chöd practice, it’s a method to, quick way to recognize the object of ignorance, to realize it’s empty. So, the spirits come, then they create a lot of violence and, then many meditators, then they’re able to recognize the object to be refuted, object of ignorance, the refuting object, object to be refuted, and then, realize emptiness, so it becomes a special, a quick way to.
So, similar here, this noise, so irritate, this noise, then suddenly rise fear or, so makes to rise the emotional I, which is Western term for, psychological term for the, what is said, truly existent I or the object of ignorance, in the Western psychology they use. [More loud noise from microphone]
So, anyway, so similar with this noise, not chöd, that particular prayer, but this, so quick way to recognize object of ignorance and to realize emptiness.
Anyway, so, all the three-time happiness, all the past, present and future, all the happiness, so it came from, received by the kindness of every hell beings, every hungry ghost, every animal, every human being, every asura being, every sura being, every intermediate state being, by every single sentient being, okay?
Think also of all the people, so from every sentient being, so how that is, how it’s received from every single sentient being, that is, so all the three time happiness came from one’s own good karma, everything came from your own good karma, so your own good karma is the action of Buddha. There are two actions of Buddha: one is possessed by buddhas themselves, one is ?within us the sentient beings, all the virtuous thought is the action of Buddha.
So then the good karma, the action of Buddha, it came from Buddha, I guess you can say also Dharma, however, it came from Buddha, and Buddha came from the bodhisattva, bodhisattva came from bodhicitta, bodhicitta came from great compassion, great compassion is generated by depending on the kindness of the existing suffering sentient beings, great compassion is generated by the kindness of the existing suffering sentient beings, so, came from that, came from each and every single suffering sentient beings, so every single hell being, every single animal, every single hungry ghost, every single human being, asura, sura, so every single obscured suffering sentient being, the great compassion is generated, okay?
So then, now all your past, numberless past, present, and future happiness, every, up to and including enlightenment, all the realizations, everything you receive by the kindness of every single, okay, hell being, hungry ghosts, animals, human beings, asuras, suras, everybody, so everybody here, every person here, you receive. So think this, and then, how that’s most precious, most kind, okay.
Then as you’re walking back, now it become dark, I think, so as you’re walking back, then you think, so you think, I’m leading them to enlightenment, so you meditate on the kindness, how they are so precious, how they are most kind, precious, okay, most kind, precious one in my life, okay. Then, think, with this awareness, so keep your mind always on how they are most precious, most kind, okay, always keep your mind on that, and then, now, then, what you’re benefiting them is bringing them to enlightenment, you’re leading them. Then, you can think, you can visualize all those you are leading, you are first then all sentient beings come after you, so leading them, think that or, however, bringing sentient beings to enlightenment.
So, normally when you walk, the meditation, there’s a meditation, circumambulate, circumambulation, so Milarepa mentioned that, when you walk, you visualize while walking, so, your right side, the whole world is to your right side, that means there’s all the holy objects, all the merit field, I mean all the holy objects: statues, stupas, scriptures, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, everything is there, guru, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, can think, so you are circumambulating, this side, you are circumambulating. So, this is what Milarepa mentioned. Milarepa said that, I have method while I am eating, it becomes tsog offering, and while I’m walking, it becomes virtue, circumambulating. I can’t remember the last part of the words. So that’s one meditation, so you’re circumambulating, whether you’re running or whether you’re jogging, or whatever the mode of running but however, if you’re able to meditate, then this becomes circumambulation, then it becomes virtue, Dharma.
So, this is very good, so, your mindfulness, that they are most kind, precious, then, with, first think of the reason, keep your mind on that, then you are leading them to enlightenment, okay? So, with that awareness, then you walk, so it’s very good.
So in this way your body is practicing Dharma, your body, the action of your body, walking, becomes Dharma, and cause of enlightenment, because the thought to benefit sentient beings. Also, cause of higher success, then, cessation of all the sufferings, all the defilements, and then completion of all the qualities, so it becomes that. Then, with the speech, also you can recite the mantra, not just keep quiet but you chant mantra, then also your speech, also practicing Dharma, virtue, so, you can recite mantra for purification, purifying negative karma, collecting extensive merits, and you can chant OM MANI PADME HUM to develop compassion for all living beings. So, something like that. So you can motivate like that.
Then this way, your body, speech, and mind, all three are practicing Dharma, not wasted, and bring, since all, since everything is done for sentient beings, then, everything becomes cause of enlightenment, what your body is doing, what your speech is doing, what your mind is doing.
So, that’s it. Now it’s very difficult to go out because it’s dark, so is there somewhere to go round or not? Otherwise, it doesn’t matter, do tomorrow. If not then day after tomorrow, if not then the day after that. If not, next year.
[Ven. Paloma suggests that it’s possible to go outside.] But somebody has to lead, somebody who knows the, on the road or just around the house? [Ven. Paloma: Around the house, he says. _____ says around the house is possible. ] Around the house. On the roof? Come down? You fly down. So somebody lead, okay? [There is a discussion among students.] [Student: Actually, Rinpoche, the roof is crooked.]
So, anyway, some larger place, so that it’s easy to go around, otherwise, maybe otherwise, crowded, and then not so good, much more open space. Otherwise, you can do tomorrow. Otherwise, you can visualize.
So first, the first thing, generate bodhicitta motivation, most important. The purpose of my life is to free all the sentient beings, numberless hell beings, numberless hungry ghosts, numberless animals, numberless human beings, numberless suras, asura beings, intermediate state beings, free them from all the suffering and causes, and bring them to enlightenment, therefore I must achieve enlightenment, therefore I’m going to do, from whom I receive all my three time happiness, then, I’m going to do walking meditation, meditate on emptiness, okay, like that and bodhicitta. Dedicate it for everybody, for every sentient being, like that, so think that. [long pause]
Also, so you can chant mantra loudly, so it means the sentient beings, birds, animals, insects, human beings around, in the road, then they can, they hear and plant seeds for enlightenment. When they hear, it plants seeds of enlightenment, so in time, they’re able to achieve enlightenment from that. So if you chant loudly, so, it has that great benefit sentient beings who are around, also spirits who are around, so good to ?feel that. So, that means on the way you lead, you bring many sentient beings to enlightenment by planting seeds, so start with that.
Then, after some time, then if it’s animal, other beings, they will get reborn as a human being and they meet Dharma. So, same for the human beings who hear. So can chant with the group, can chant together, also can be done. But the main thing is to meditate, to be actually able to meditate, that’s most important, then, so main practice, think, do that meditation, then on top of that you are able to chant mantra, that’s very good, ?if body, speech, and mind all three, creating cause of enlightenment, not only Dharma, so it’s very good, okay.
So somebody should lead, who knows the, where to ?go. So we come back tomorrow. We come back next year.
So, especially if you are circumambulating the stupa or holy object, good to go fast so that you can collect more merit. Okay, so we chant OM MANI PADME HUM, so the main question [a couple of words inaudible]
[Rinpoche leads chanting of OM MANI PADME HUM.]
...by oneself, three-time merits collected by others, all sentient beings, especially the sentient beings, including bodhisattvas, buddhas, then due to all this, which are empty, may the I, who is empty, achieve Compassion Buddha’s enlightenment, which is empty...
