(15221_sl-3.jpg) Lama Yeshe and Chowkidhar, ca. 1978. Chowkidhar was elderly Nepalese man and devout Hindu who lived with his wife in a mud hut at the foot of Kopan Hill, Kopan Monastery. They owned one cow. Everyone called him Chowkidhar, the Nepali word for "caretaker." Chowkidhar became Lama Yeshe's life-long friend.
(18001_pr-3.jpg) Norbulingka, Kopan Monastery, 1978. Norbulingka was a large sprawling dormitory building where the Mount Everest Centre monks lived, three or four to a room, had their classrooms, and where a few Injis were also occasionally accommodated.
