The Foundation for Generation and Completion Stages
This advice was given to a student who wrote to Rinpoche describing how they did completion stage practices.
My very dear one,
It is so important to have realization of generation stage. After you have had realizations of renunciation, then bodhicitta, then generation stage, then you can spend more time on completion stage.
If you have generation stage realizations, then you can spend more time on completion stage. Until then, spend more time on generation stage and before that, on bodhicitta.
It’s very important to have the foundation: the realization of bodhicitta, effortless bodhicitta, and before that, renunciation and before that, correct devotion to the virtuous friend. From your side, without effort seeing your guru is one with all the buddhas and all the buddhas as one with your guru. From your heart, realizing that one hundred percent—not just for a few hours, a few days or a few weeks, but for months and years.
