The second part of a series of teachings given by Lama Zopa Rinpoche at Tara Institute in Melbourne, Australia in August 1991. This series formed the basis for the book Ultimate Healing, published by Wisdom Publications.

The Power of Compassion; Disciplining the Mind

… to see these fully enlightened beings in pure form.

However, able to see, able to hear teachings, then able to receive direct guidance, like that, like all those practitioners that happened, all those high practitioners as they explained in their life stories, so like that.

So however, my point what [pause], so, looking at, so coming back, returning back to the point of the talk, so by seeing even the holy objects of the meditation, even by looking at the symbolic, the holy objects, so it has much benefit to the mind, much power.

However, now, what I was going to say is this, the conclusion what I was going to say is, just doing the meditation, only the meditation, just that itself, so can benefit, it can cure, so depending how much obstacle there is, then depending how much obstacle is greater, the practice has to be done that much more. So it's like, if the disease is very heavy, then have to take more medicine, many varieties of medicine, more, stronger; if the symptoms is very, beginning or just small, then also the medicine doesn't need to be taken that much. So it's similar like this in regards also the practice, same.

The most important healing, that one is the mind. Why? Why the mind than the body - why? For example, then, even it's experience of some students, those who have had similar problems so the lady whom I mentioned at the beginning of the course, Ann Coomb, one who does, creates idea of fashion the next year, so after six, it was, her disease was recovered, completely gone, so I was curious that, whether it was coming back or not. So then I think one or two years ago, then the virus started to come back. So she, what she did is, so she told me that, so I used to check time to time how her health is. So for a long time, for years, just, fine, but one of these, the virus started to come back. So she told, she wrote to me or she spoke by telephone, she said because her life was become disordered that time, she didn't discipline, for long time she kept discipline her life, what happened that time is she didn't discipline, her life became very disordered, or little bit kind of messy, didn't get to do the practice what she was supposed to do, and become out of control quite a little bit. So that's what she said.

So then her life became like this and then the virus started to come back.

Then again, so she tried again what she did before, the mantras, practices and those different things, liberating animals, so quite, to that beginning she did, she liberated a few, so what I told her is hundred, about a hundred, but she did I think two or three thousand, she bought many chickens, whether she had farm, I don't know whether she has a farm to herself or maybe her relative have, however, those animals who live on the ground, such as chickens, then, she bought food and fed them. She did, by herself, she did one or two thousand, worms, and fish, just small, big, just any type.

This one usually comes out because the person, according to the karma or according to the actions, positive actions from past life, this much length of year to live, the karma, the action, the cause, it may not be still not finished, there's still a number of years to live, but due to, out of self-cherishing thought, the three poisonous minds, then some heavy, some unrighteous action has happened, then that becomes life obstacle. Suddenly, there's no life obstacle before that, you have this many years to live, according to the cause, the karma or the action that was created in the past, as regards their length of life. But suddenly, with this happened, then suddenly this unwholesome action then it brings obstacles to the life, it causes death. So it's called untimely death.

Untimely death means you do have still a few number of years to live but, the cause is still there, you still have the merit to live, it's not finished but because of this thing, out of this impure mind, certain heavy, the unwholesome actions happened, then suddenly that becomes the obstacle, causes untimely death. It doesn't have to be only disease, it can be car accident, it can be many other things, it can be many other ways, doesn't have to be only through disease. Suddenly there's disease - not only that, there are many other ways.

So, usually, there are methods, there are meditation practices to do. If it's, if the untimely death, if the death is happening by finishing life, however, then one do those meditations like White Tara, there are many enlightened beings who help for sentient beings is particularly to grant long life, like this, Namgyalma, so there are different enlightened beings, whose function is to grant long life. So doing those mantras or meditations, taking initiations of those deities.

Then, one thing is, then, there are many other methods to prolong the life. One of the practical powerful things that is liberating animals. So, but you have to buy from the place where they are going to be killed, where they are sold, selling for food. Not buying dead ones . If you buy dead ones then there's no way to liberate, what means liberation, liberate from life danger. Except liberate oneself from hunger , by eating. Anyway, I'm joking! That, so one buy from the place where they're going to be killed, butchers, the place anyway where they are kept to be sold for food, to be killed. Then liberate as much as possible safe place, where they can live longer. Generally it's very difficult, unless if there's a special place where you can liberate the fish in some water pond or some pool or something where there's no other enemies attacking, where there's only kept those animals, the same animal, no other enemy. So something like that, then it's the best.

In Singapore or Taiwan, Hong Kong, some of these places, at the monasteries they have a place for the turtles, not any animal but just only turtle, but I don't know why only they do with turtles. But there's no water, maybe it's not taking care very well - I don't know. It's just damp, wet, maybe they don't need water, I'm not sure. So again people liberate turtles and put, bring at the monastery and then put there in that place, kind of big, it's kind of like a waterfall but there's no water, but like that. So they liberate all the turtles, so the people buy and then put there. So then as the people come every day, to make offering or just to see the monastery, then the people as they bring food with them so then they give food to the turtles, bread, things like that.

If one is able to look after, if it is something that one is able to look after, it's the best, give food, if one has place, looking after, garden or some place where they can stay, then that's the best, so every day you can feed them and all this becomes Dharma practice, meditation practice, making charity, creating good karma, merit every day, creating much cause of happiness. There's happiness to that being and also you are creating constantly cause of happiness that you experience, after creating the cause.

However, it becomes very good practice. So they don't have to kill other animals, things like that, if it's non-vegetarian then, however, so, the point is this, by causing long life, by buying them from the butcher, place where they are going to be, where they are selling for food, which means going to kill, so this way, one causes long life for them, and then by causing them long life, this good karma, this positive action causing them long life, causing them to have freedom, long life, free from the danger to be killed, then this positive action, this naturally, like if you plant potato, it grows potato, if you plant rice, then grows rice, if you plant chili, grows chili, so depending on what you plant, it grows, it is nature, it is part of evolution, it is part of nature. By planting that particular thing then you get this particular result. Same, like that, from these positive action causing others longer life, then naturally, like the stem coming, it causes oneself to have longer life. This is one way to eliminate untimely death, to prolong the life. So usually, with this type of bad sicknesses, this one somehow comes out.

So particularly her, she did a lot of this, so this is the one that which prolonged her life, made life longer. Then the other thing is, by reciting mantra, it's like taking tablets that which kills the germs or something. So the mantra, because the [pause], the mantra is like that, it, the mantra powerful to heal or to reduce, to change, to protect from these spirits. One logic is, so there are different types of spirits, naga, in Greek philosophers they I think they also believed, I think called mermaids. Mermaids? So I think Greeks they also believed, the ancient religion, they draw in their thangkas, half person,, female form, then half snake, like that.

Even I saw in Disneyland in America, when I went to Disneyland, the place where you go, anyway they made this appearance like that, you take boat, first you go into the water, the mainly to go under the water , so they made this mermaid there, under the water, I don't know why. I was surprised because even to make that idea, I mean scientifically, according to Western culture, without relating to ancient religion, according to science, those things doesn't exist. So, such as spirits, these things, they haven't discovered yet. But, in the scientific philosophy it's not mentioned, but it's possible some scientists they themselves have experienced strange things happened in the life, that's possible, start having doubt, maybe it's possible it exists. But as far as the philosophy, what is being taught, college, university, it's not mentioned. However, so I was surprised to see in Disneyland. However, the snakes, those animals, having animal body, naga, such this kind of being having animal body.

So, however, they can manifest, they can appear in different forms. However, one of logics is that there are meditation practices to do relating to which type of spirit. So there are one who causes paralysis, it's not the main cause, the external condition, tsa, there are type of spirit causes paralysis, what's it called, there's another one, anyway, these different tsa, so they're type of spirit which cause certain/sudden disease. Then, there are other beings, down below, nagas, beings who are living down below in the earth or in the water, in those places, nagas. Then, tsen, then gyalpo, King - there are different types of spirits that become external conditions causing different problems, different disease.

However, one of the logic is, there are different meditations to be done related to this type of beings. So by doing these pujas, then, of course it depends on the qualification of the person who does the puja, or the meditation, for that patient, it depends on the qualification. It's like the doctor, similar. So, depending on that, so the usual thing is, so if the meditation is done properly, correctly, then the patient gets recovered from those disease. So that is the proof that these outside conditions of the life problems exist. The most, I think it seems almost every disease there is a relation, there is something outside condition, such as spirit. So the person get recovered as much as the puja, the meditation is done correctly. As much as it's perfectly done, then that much quicker the result is there, completely cure, anyway, depending how it's done, that much result, quicker effect, greater result.

So these experiences, even you don't see in front of you, that particular spirit, even the person who does the meditation doesn't see, the high, those who have clairvoyance and those who have highly developed mind, they can see those who are harming. Who have clairvoyance and even those who have highly developed mind, they can see.

However, even somebody who doesn't see, even the person does puja or meditation can't see, but by having done the meditation, it affects the patient. So these are the proof that there are such things. So, many times without taking any medicine, the patient gets recovered, by just doing the puja, so there is this proof that these beings do exist, and harming, because the puja is related to them, these spirits, giving them teachings to not harm, giving them presents, making them happy, giving them presents, substitute of this sick person, then you visualize very beautiful person, very well-dressed, having numberless of them, huge body, very magnificent looking, so you visualize or you make even symbolic there, or by saying the words how the person is beautiful, well-developed.

Then, like a city, having all the enjoyments, like big supermarket, like whole city filled with food, or clothing, whatever they want, all the enjoyments, also you make those, so much, you visualize so extensive and then give it to them. Then afterwards, making happy by giving these things, then present, then teaching them Dharma, that they should not give harm, if you give harm to them then result that you will suffer, you will receive harm back, so forth. Then you give many advice, making Dharma charity to them. So, basically like that, involves things like that.

Then also, then sometimes, also if you don't listen what I say, then I will destroy you and so forth . Then with wrathful actions that, putting them in a particular situation to not give harm to the other beings. So basically that is the general idea, what the meditation involves.

Then, this meditation has to be done with, as much as the qualifications the person has, has to be done as possible strong compassion, the spirits, the patients, to every, even one doesn't have compassion to all sentient beings, but especially them as strong as possible, so can't do out of anger or things, negative mind. Then, it doesn't work. If one does out of anger then they can harm to oneself, those wrathful actions like doing to them they can harm to oneself if one is not qualified.

So however, there are many things like. The best one who has bodhicitta, the altruism, this realization, thought to achieve full enlightenment for the sake of all living beings, then, this is the best healer. Such as this one, even breath, everything, blood, everything what comes from this person's body, the whole entire body of this person, everything become healing, blessed, blessed because of this pure, the altruism, the pure mind, unstained by self-cherishing thought, no thought thinking for self, work for self, mind is unstained by this.

So because of this holy mind, so then everything, the person's body, even the dress, everything has healing power, everything becomes a blessing. So that's why, of course, the Buddhist, there are many meditators or many high lamas, that hair or even piece of clothing, when somebody become crazy, anyway, it become great healing, by burning, with the smelling smoke, when somebody become completely unconscious then you burn little bit of hair or clothes, something, around their nose, then person is able to come back, so it's very common. Also, in Christianity, I saw in Italy there are, from some temples, they give a very small piece of some saint's, some priest who become saint, their clothes kept, so they give tiny bit to some people. So you burn, when you have some disease, then you burn or you eat, then immediately you vomit, so they say that evil goes out or something, then after that you become better.

So however, anyway, then one powerful, this is one, best one, who has completely developed the mind, transformed the mind, who has this bodhicitta realization. Then other one, best is one who has realized ultimate nature of the I, the mind, so forth, who realized the absolute truth, that is very powerful one. So many things that, so many of these problems that which, however, there's more control over the, this way, control over these things, elements, living beings, so there's much more power to heal somebody who is violent, crazy or, many different things, that, to make rain, to stop rain or to make rain, many things, one powerful healer is that.

However, now the point what I'm trying to say is that, by doing these meditations that it helps the person to get healed, so this is one logic how these things, these outside conditions, for example, these things, and then why these beings is harming is according to the karma, the unwholesome actions and the self- cherishing thought, done out of that, so it's connected with that, how these outside beings are harming, whether it's spirit or whether it's human being, harming, it's connected with that, it came from that.

So however, then there's also story of the cancer that is explained in the Tibetan medical texts. What type of the outside being that is harming. However, maybe I'll mention another time.

So, the conclusion of what I'm saying is that, my talk went far and far. However, coming back, so, healing the mind is very, very important than the body, why? Because even, yeah, that's right , now I remember. So she, Ann Coomb, she said because, her cancer started to come back because of her life disorder, so in other words, she didn't do the practices, disciplining the mind, in other words disciplining the life means disciplining the mind, what she did before.

So, then her life was involved like before, become very uncontrolled, involved immoral or many other actions, so become very uncontrolled, so what, so again started to come back, so then again, she tried to discipline her life, so then she went to have x-rays and then the doctor said it 's completely gone, again it's completely gone. That didn't take much time. So however, it's coming from the mind, not disciplining the mind. However, by not practicing the meditation. Not protecting the mind. So therefore, even one, even by doing those other meditations, even one got recovered now, but then if one doesn't watch well the mind, doesn't protect it, then again, life become...

…letting the body to do whatever the mind thinks, whatever the attachment, the self-cherishing thought, then whatever it thinks then let to do. So then when there's no protection for the mind then again, when one's mind doesn't protect from these things then that makes, that creates the cause again to come back.

So however, so therefore, healing the mind becomes the most important, first thing. Otherwise, as long as there's no change to the mind, there's no change in the action, means nothing becoming better in the actions, then one create the cause again and again and then comes back again and again the same problem. So even, this life and in other lives, the future lives, and then it becomes endless, as it has been beginningless, then it will become endless.

So however, so the most important thing, to never experience again the problem, that has to come from the mind. That determination that has to come from the mind, that freedom has to come from the mind, through the mind, by transforming that, so that comes from the transformation of the mind, the meditation, that which is healing the mind.

So, this becomes the most important thing, not only disease, but any life problem. So therefore, so for this, just medicine, or just some simple meditation, just enough to heal the disease, that's not sufficient in order to heal the mind. So one has to learn depth, one need to hear more and one has to learn more depth and then rather than just some simple visualization. So that is the whole point.

So, what we are doing here with this course, the talk, this is the long run healing, not only healing this life but healing forever, the ultimate healing. The transformation of mind is ultimate healing, this psychology or this meditation, generating, meditating on the emptiness, meditating on the compassion, transforming the mind into compassion and loving kindness, and the altruism, cherishing other sentient beings, generating the motivation this way, we are doing the ultimate healing, that which healing has completion, that which has end for the healing. That which makes, sooner or later, to never experience at all. So, like that.

So therefore each time when we generate compassion, we accumulate infinite merit, each time when we generate compassion for all beings, we accumulate infinite merit, cause of success, up to that which leads to enlightenment. Each time when we generate altruism, to practice meditation for all living beings, each time when we do this, we are doing ultimate healing, that which has infinite merit, cause of happiness, that we collect because we dedicate the meditation, the practice, for numberless beings. So, like that. So there's so much unbelievable, powerful healing of depth in this.

Yeah, so I stop here.

Due to all the past, present, future positive actions that were done, may the altruism, source of all the happiness, be generated within my mind, in the minds of all other beings.
