The Importance of Compassion

…What did they did do out. So there's a lot of hunters around.

Did you see my hobby? That's my hobby. The lights! For the development of the common path, and then the tantric path, the highest, visualization, meditation for the Highest Tantra path, that, with that visualization there's very, the most secret meditation, the tantric meditation, that which makes possible full enlightenment, to achieve in a very brief lifetime of degenerated time, like those many past yogis in India or Tibet, achieved enlightenment. There's meditation that goes with that, the very essence. [pause]

That, the central picture that is His Holiness the Dalai Lama's, one of his gurus, the younger tutor. There are two, elder tutor and younger tutor, His Holiness has many other gurus but I think this was, then there's another elder one, the main ones that His Holiness received many initiations or many teachings, the common ones, and this is the one that I have received, first time when I heard the meditation on the path, not in Tibet but when I came to India, much later. So, this is my root guru, from whom I received the teachings, the commentary on the graduated path to enlightenment. Then after that, from many other lamas I have received.

Then, that, with that one frame, there's one frame there, many pictures, many photos, yeah, not all the gurus, all the pictures are not there, there are, most of the pictures are there, but not all, there's still a few pictures are missing there. So those are, one I think from that, one picture, one little bit round, little bit old picture looking, that one, one very high lama that happened in Tibet, called Pabongka. I didn't meet that lama, that lama passed away, did practice on the path and completed the whole path, then gave teachings so many places in Tibet and became extremely well-known and wrote many teachings, gave many teachings on the graduated path to enlightenment and then specially tantra, so wrote or gave many teachings from his own experiences.

Then, so his teaching is one that normally we teach, the graduated path to enlightenment, the basic teaching, so that is the teaching that normally, in one tradition that is mainly used, because it's very experiential, much details and it's presented very effective way, mainly dealing with people's lives or minds. But I mean there are many other teachings, so, many sadhanas, even tantric meditation, prayers or many things, many composed by that lama, Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo. So that is his picture, because of that, it's kept there, but mostly they are picture which looks, picture of human beings there, so most are my gurus, other than that all, this high lama is indirect guru, but all other are lamas, from whom I received teachings directly. There's still I think some more pictures are missing, to come , to fill up slowly.

Lenny: It must take hours to gather all your things!

Sonam: Is that Kunu Lama, on the left hand side?

Rinpoche: Very long, looking aspect of long face? With glasses, long face? Yeah, so that's Kunu Lama. [pause]

So, yesterday what I was talking, that, the way to transform the problem in happiness, which means that rather becoming obstacle to develop the path, to attain the realizations of the path, to peerless happiness, the full enlightenment for the sake of all sentient beings, the problem to become supporting, rather interfering, supporting, beneficial for that; in other words, beneficial for all sentient beings, becoming cause of happiness, using the problem to cause happiness to all sentient beings, including oneself.

So, as I mentioned, it has to be obtained by this two thoughts; one is the thought interpreting the life situation or looking at it as a problem, suffering, and then establishing the thought, dislike [pause]; then, eliminating, stopping this thought, that's one, and then second one is the thought looking at the problems, looking at the life situation, as pleasant, happiness, then so, when that happens, then the thought establishing like, it happens. When one is able to look at the problem, the life situation or the problem, pleasant, happiness, when the problem appears as happiness, pleasant, then the thought that likes to that, that comes. So, second one is thought that which looks at the life, the problem, as happiness, then likes that.

So, [pause] then how to eliminate the thought that interpreting the life as a problem and looking at a problem, establishing the thought of dislike, how to eliminate this, the first one, how to obtain this, eliminating this thought. So one has to think, if one get habituated looking purely, looking only the side of the problems, looking at it only problem, looking at it only suffering, so whether it is relationship problem or unsuccess or sicknesses or whatever, even the death. So, looking at it only suffering, then if one live the life with that thought, if one get habituated with that thought, then the discomfort, the worry, fear, increases, more and more, it creates, it builds up the emotional pains or emotional sufferings. [pause]

So, in the life, then every single, besides the big ones, then even the very minor things, or even very small things, then, one makes up as a huge problem. Mind builds up, makes up, creates up as huge problem and so like this, do whatever happens to the senses, in the appearance, then almost everything kind of appearing as a problem, becoming a problem.

Then it becomes extremely, it makes extremely difficult to find happiness in the daily life, comfort or relaxation, whatever, all those things.

So first one has to remember, think of the shortcomings, what happens if one, if the mind get habituated with that thought, looking at the life situation only problems. Such the life situation, big ones and even minor, insignificant, or even very small discomfort, those things, then, something that is not exactly what one likes, then looking at it only a problem.

Then, by remembering the shortcomings and then making strong determination that, to not look at it, when the problem comes to not look at it only problem. When some undesirable condition happens, then to not look, making strong determination to not look at as a problem, and to [pause] not look at as a problem and to look at as pleasant and happiness. So, having very strong intention, this is what I'm going to do. So for example, in the morning, the beginning of the day, having strong intention, this is what I'm going to do.

So by making strong determination, then attempting to strengthen one's own heart, the will. However, to make the brave heart or brave mind. So by thinking in that way then attempting to make brave heart, will. So if one make strong intention, plan, if some problem comes, undesirable condition happens, this is what I'm going to do it. So, one has to have strong determination, that way. Attempt to develop the brave heart or the strong will.

So, then one should think, No purpose, there's no use, no benefit to look at, when the undesirable condition happens, then to look at it as a problem, there's no benefit in that, to look at it a problem and then worried, afraid, there's no benefit in that. It is mentioned in the Guide to a Bodhisattva's Life, the guide to the holy being that I have been describing before, to day and other days, so these holy beings called bodhisattvas, [pause] here, bodhisattva is Sanskrit, maybe the hero of enlightenment, what it's saying is, that being has the thought cherishing only other sentient beings, nothing else other than that, working only for other sentient beings, no other than that, there's no other than, working only for other sentient beings, no other than that.

Then, taking, not just wishing others to be happy but taking full responsibility to free everyone from every single suffering and causes and to bring to highest full enlightenment by oneself alone. No matter how long it takes time, no matter how many eons it takes time, no matter how difficult it is, I'm going to do it. So taking responsibility to do this work for each living being, the numberless, infinite, taking responsibility to do this work for each sentient being. So, on oneself, completely.

So, such this thought taking full responsibility upon oneself to work for others, so this is the real hero, the real brave person, so this is the real hero, is hero by having this brave mind, taking responsibility of the work on oneself.

So, arhats, as I described the other day, those holy beings called arhats, who are completely free from all the suffering and causes, these arhats, who achieved the lower liberation, the liberation of the Lesser Vehicle path or, these arhats, the enemy-destroyed ones, they are completely free from all the whole entire suffering, death, rebirth, all these things, and causes, the action and delusions, but [gap] they have the wish all sentient beings, the numberless sentient beings to be free from suffering and [pause], every single sentient beings, those higher bodhisattvas, that has to be checked, however, numberless sentient beings, they have wish, these holy beings who having destroyed the enemy, these holy beings, they have the wish numberless sentient beings to have happiness, to be free from all the sufferings, they have this, but what is missing is to take, they have this thought wishing, but what is missing is the brave heart, taking the responsibility upon oneself alone, even without using "alone" that additional word, taking responsibility on oneself, this is missing, this they don't have. Taking, to do the work for other sentient beings, freeing them from all the sufferings, to bring them in the ultimate happiness by oneself, even without saying "alone", by oneself. So taking the responsibility of the work on oneself, so they don't have.

So, yeah, that's right, but the bodhisattvas, the hero of [pause], having the thought of enlightenment. But these holy beings have the thought to take the responsibility on oneself. So, not, besides that, besides taking the responsibility on oneself, then to do the works for every sentient being, to bring to highest happiness, full enlightenment by oneself alone. So there's differences, the immeasurable compassion and the great compassion, there's differences. So these arhats, these holy beings, who are free from the whole entire, who are free from it's just from the whole entire suffering and causes, so they have immeasurable compassion, wishing numberless sentient beings to be free from suffering, but they don't have great compassion, but these holy beings, bodhisattvas, these saints then they have great compassion, great, why? Not only that they have the wish everyone to be free from obscurations and sufferings but taking the responsibility to do that work by oneself. So, because of that then their compassion become "great". So what makes their compassion great is because the brave heart taking the responsibility upon oneself, then even besides that, then even the work to do by oneself alone. So it's very, very strong thought, completely dedicated, extremely great brave heart.

So, the Guide to a Bodhisattva's Life, in this text advised by great bodhisattva, great saint, Shantideva, this Indian pandit, explained [pause], If it can be cut off, it means the problem, the undesirable condition, so whatever it is, that which makes one to be worried and afraid, all these things, if it can be cut off, then no need to establish, to be unhappy. If it can be cut off, then no need to be unhappy. So what it's saying is this, if the problem can be, if there's a solution, there's a method to cut off the problem, then no need to be unhappy. If there's a method then you just do it [snaps fingers], you just follow the method, you just do that method [snaps fingers], that which cuts that problem. So what it's saying is, rather to be, just being unhappy, with the miserable condition, then even there's a method, but do nothing, even there's solution, but do nothing for that, do nothing and then living the life constantly in the depression...
