Family and Relationship

< Back to Advice Book main page

In this section, Rinpoche explains the underlying causes for difficulties in family and other types of personal relationships.

Despite appearances to the contrary, we are always responsible for the suffering we experience through our past karmic causes and conditions, and these advices emphasize the importance of cultivating the good heart, loving kindness, and compassion.

Rinpoche shows how normally the gathering of a family is based on having created karma together in the past, and emphasizes how parents need to be clear about their purpose for having a child and the manner of its upbringing. Since the future peace and happiness of the world depends on the children, if the child grows up with a selfish attitude, anger, and bad thoughts, then instead of bringing peace to the world, he or she only brings harm to others.

We are reminded that when we find ourselves in a difficult situation, it is important to always remember how negative karma from our past lives is a cause for our present situation.
