The following is a lam-rim teaching given by Rinpoche in Guadalajara, Mexico, on April 4, 2008. It includes commentary to part of Seven-Point Thought Transformation. The translation into Spanish is also included.

...truth for the all-obscuring mind. The second time then you realize the kun tsob denpa, truth for the all-obscuring mind. By having realized the I is empty, the ultimate nature of the I, the emptiness, then as a result then you see the I as illusion. So anyway, like this, then you see the two truths of the I, able to realize.

Among the students some who have collected a lot of merit in the past, who studied the teachings on the Prajnaparamita, collected a lot of imprints in the past, who meditated in the past. Then also having received the blessings of the guru in the heart, having entered the blessings of the guru in the heart, then, as the disciple’s side the correctly devoted to the virtuous friend and looking at it positive side, only qualities, no mistakes, looking at buddha, so the guru yoga meditation, blessings of the guru enter in the heart of the disciple through that devotion. Then at the same time, doing intensive practice purifying the defilements. There are various practices purifying the mind and collecting extensive merits. Those things happening together, these conditions, cause and conditions happening together, then the realization, then you are able to see the truth of the I, something that you never experienced, never discovered from the birth and from past life, from beginningless rebirth never discovered. First time seeing this.

Then by developing this wisdom then later you seek meditation from the right view. You are seeking meditation from the right view. If you haven’t achieved the calm abiding meditation before this then you achieve this, then you achieve the realization the concentration that derives the rapturous ecstasy of the body and mind. When you are meditating on emptiness unified with the calm abiding, what is called the concentration unification of the emptiness and calm abiding. Then by developing this, for example, there are five paths to achieve liberation and there are five paths to achieve to full enlightenment. There are five Mahayana paths to enlightenment and there are five Lesser Vehicle paths to achieve liberation for oneself. So when you achieve the third, the right seeing path, the first one is the path of merit, the second one is the preparatory path, the third, right seeing path; fourth, path of meditation; no more learning. When you achieve the third, right seeing path, then at that time you have achieved the wisdom directly perceiving emptiness through the development of the concentration, the unification of the emptiness and calm abiding. During this time when you achieve the right seeing path, then with this wisdom….

In mean, in each of those paths, there are different levels, there are many things to explain. But just a very rough idea: by actualizing this third right seeing path, then you remove the delusions, the 112 delusions you are able to remove. Then by actualizing the path of meditation, still by training the mind in that, the wisdom directly perceiving emptiness, so then by actualizing the path of meditation, then you remove the sixteen delusions. Then by removing even the cause of delusion, by training in the mind in the wisdom directly perceiving emptiness, you are able to cease completely even the cause of the delusion, the seed, the negative imprint, okay? Then when that happens, your ultimate nature of your mind, that which is totally free from this, removed all this, then that is liberation, the sorrowless state, the nirvana. Then it is impossible to experience suffering again. So this cyclic existence, you die and reborn, die and reborn, this, taking another rebirth, so it is completely ended, totally ended.

Human being, so I am going to conclude, I am not going go to details. You are born as a human being, then oceans of human sufferings, all the human beings’ problems. So you are totally, impossible to experience again. So similar, then impossible to experience oceans of sura and asura realm sufferings, then hell sufferings, hungry ghost sufferings, animal, oceans of, so all those intermediate state beings, all those oceans of suffering of each realm, you are totally free; impossible to experience again. So therefore, practicing Dharma, attaining the true cessation of the suffering by actualizing true path, that’s one time work. That’s just one time. You don’t have to do over and over like the works of this life or like the works of samsara, the cyclic existence. The achieving happiness for these aggregates, the continuity of the aggregates, our aggregates, continuity of the contaminated aggregates caused by karma and delusion. So this is samsara. Or sometimes some lamas explained, this is what Lama Tsongkhapa explained in the Great Commentary of the Graduated Path to Enlightenment. Then some of my gurus explain the continuity of taking birth, continuity of the birth of these aggregates, contaminated aggregates caused by karma and delusion is samsara.

So anyway, achieving happiness for this, achieving pleasure of these aggregates, we did, we experienced, we did numberless times from beginningless rebirth. From beginningless rebirth we did that. We worked for this. To seek happiness for this. But still did not end. Doesn’t, there’s nothing to complete, there’s no end. So it’s the same, how much we continue, it becomes endless. That’s why the suffering of samsara becomes endless. There’s nothing to finish, no end. But Dharma practice is one time.

 Then after you achieved the blissful state of peace, then you abide many eons, however, in this state of bliss. Then Buddha sends light from there to you. There’s a verse, stanza, there’s one stanza of teaching, I don’t remember now, So then persuade your heart to enter in the Mahayana path. Then you actualize the five Mahayana paths to enlightenment. Then in this case you don’t have to remove the disturbing-thought obscurations because you have already done. Here you remove the subtle obscuration which function is mainly interfere your mind to become omniscient mind. That’s the meaning of the subtle defilements.

So here, by actualizing, there’s five paths, so by actualizing the third Mahayana path, the right seeing path, you remove 116, I think it is, 116,, subtle defilements. Then you actualize the Mahayana path of meditation, also you remove 116 defilements. So then by completing the path, then you are able to cease completely the subtle negative imprint that which project the total hallucination. Whatever phenomena including the I, self, action, object whatever phenomena appear, not appearing, even though just now your mind merely imputed but when they appear back not appearing merely imputed by mind but appeared back to you not merely labeled by the mind, existing from its own side, existing by nature. There is hallucination decorated or projected on your I, action, object, all  the phenomena, that which are merely imputed by the mind, existing in mere name. That’s the reality how everything is, but there is a projection from this negative imprint. It’s a hallucination, the truly existent appearance put on everything—the merely labeled I, the merely labeled action, the merely labeled everything, from hell up to enlightenment, everything, samsara, nirvana, whatever, happiness, suffering. Everything exists in mere name merely imputed by mind, but all this, there is a hallucination that your mind, this negative imprint, decorated, put on the whole entire existence.

Here now actualizing the five Mahayana paths, by actualizing the path of meditation, then able to remove even the subtle negative imprint which projects this hallucination, everything including yourself, the I, action, object, everything something real, existing from its own side. You put this, you have decorated this hallucination on all the existence, on all these phenomena exist in mere name. So this completely get purified. Then your mind becomes omniscient. At that time, not only your mind becomes omniscient, directly seeing all the past, at the same time seeing the future, at the same time present, everything. So while you are meditating, while your mind is meditating one-pointedly in emptiness, immovable forever from the emptiness, directly seeing emptiness, so while the mind is forever like this, at the same time, your mind, so at this time you are a fully enlightened being, so at the same time your mind can see the base of the emptiness; see those two together at the same time. This flower, your mind is directly seeing the emptiness of the flower. The continuously abiding in the meditation immovable forever from the emptiness, emptiness of the flower. So at the same time, the mind can see also the flower, at the same time can see the conventional truth, the flower. Seeing the ultimate truth, at the same time seeing the conventional truth of the flower. So that is a very special quality of Buddha that can see together. While the mind is one-pointedly in meditation on emptiness but at the same time can see all the sentient beings, every single sentient being, their level of mind, intelligence, their karma, everything; and then all the methods even to guide one sentient being from happiness to enlightenment, from happiness to happiness to enlightenment. Can see every single method to fit it exactly, so like that to every single sentient being can see all their level of intelligence, their karma, wishes, everything, then every single method that what fits to each sentient being to guide from life to life to enlightenment.

And at the same time manifest with the holy body, holy speech, holy mind. When you achieve enlightenment, the body can do the function of the mind; the mind can do the function of the body. For Buddha, like that. Then manifested billions and billions and billions, numberless forms at the same time to the sentient beings; and then guide them from happiness to happiness to enlightenment. Unbelievable, inconceivable numbers of different forms manifests. Then at that time, you have also perfect power to be able to reveal whatever methods fit sentient beings.

Then also with that, you have completed, you completed mind training in compassion towards sentient beings. Mainly because of the compassion generated for us sentient beings, for every single sentient being, not even one left out, developed from numberless eons, for so many eons, so because of that, then we sentient being receive guidance, especially as we open our mind, open our heart towards the path to enlightenment. Then it is easy to guide, to liberate us from all the suffering and bring to enlightenment.

So now, so we are able to do perfect work without the slightest mistake towards numberless sentient beings. When the one sun or one moon rises, there is no motivation, “Oh, I must reflect in this ocean, in this country, Mexico, what’s the name of this?” [Ven. Paloma: Guadalajara.] Guadalajara, I must manifest in Guadalajara, this part of the water; so doesn’t have that motivation. So any water which doesn’t have obscuration, then the one sun rises, one moon, naturally it reflects in every single ocean, every single water dew, water stream, even smallest, water dew, everywhere. So like that, without any effort. So like this, everywhere manifest, I mean, the reflection. So like that how you, when you become enlightened, how you benefit for sentient beings without any effort, without any effort, so spontaneously. Do the work for sentient beings without the slightest mistake until everybody is liberated from all the sufferings, brought to enlightenment. Not only liberated from suffering but brought to enlightenment. So until everybody is brought. Then when every single suffering sentient being is liberated and brought to enlightenment, so that one is the real goal of our life; the purpose of our life or our achievement.

So we can do that, while we have this precious human body, we have, it gives full opportunity to engage in this. But not others, this human body especially we received in this continent, Southern Continent. Okay? This one particularly. There are other human worlds—eastern, western. In this universe, east, west, other human continents but especially this Southern Continent human being body we have, this one has unbelievable opportunity. So that’s why this human body we have received at this time in this world is more precious than all the wealth in the rest of the world. The value of all the wealth in the world is nothing compared to this.

So this human body is so precious in every day, not only every day, every minute, every second. Unbelievably precious, more precious than the size of this earth gold, diamond, even the whole sky filled with the diamonds and gold, billions of dollars, even wish-granting jewel—a precious jewel that whatever you pray to get material comfort, material external enjoyment. But if you don’t have a human body, you own whole sky of gold, diamonds, billions of dollars, billions, zillions of dollars, whole sky of wish-granting jewels, you cannot achieve higher rebirth; you can’t achieve enlightenment, full enlightenment for sentient beings to liberate everyone from suffering and causes and bring to enlightenment. You cannot do that and you can’t even achieve liberation for yourself. You can’t achieve even happiness of future lives, good rebirth. But without having these precious materials but if you have a human body, especially received in this Southern Continent, can achieve all this. You can achieve all the happiness whatever you wish up to enlightenment, you can achieve, free from all the sufferings, all the defilements. And then you the one person can liberate numberless other beings in each realm; numberless beings from the sufferings and causes and bring to enlightenment. Unbelievable what we can do with this present human body.

So now what makes possible to do all this—now we go down, very basic, the good heart, practice of good heart. What makes everything successful? Practice good heart in our daily life, okay? So opposite to the—whenever obstacles arise, you blame everything to one, the ego, self-cherishing thought. Now here I am saying all the obstacles come from that; now all your success, happiness, all the happiness, success, you can give to all living beings come from root, your good heart cherishing others, seeking happiness for others.

So here I want to mention something, then I am going to stop.

Now in our daily life with this thought, not ego but with this good heart cherishing others, seeking happiness for others. Now here, [pause] okay, I use just one simple example. So here your friend, the person you are staying together, however, he or she wants this one there and this one there, okay? So you want this one there; the other person he wants this one there and this one there, okay.

So, ?delante. [Rinpoche is imitating a Spanish word.] [laughter]

Okay, so this is what the other person wants, right? Now I’ve forgotten. (laughter) So anyway, let’s say this what the other person wants there, this one here. [sound of objects being moved and placed down] Then you want this one there like that, okay? So now if you follow the ego, self-cherishing thought, then you would argue on this, fight for this, because, so you fight for what your ego, self-cherishing thought, wants. This one there, and the watch, clock, there. So you fight for this, you fight, quarrel or even beat, can happen anything. Self-cherishing thought, then you get angry. You don’t achieve what you want then you get angry. Then you get angry, anything can happen. Anything can happen—maybe lose the other person’s ear or nose. (laughter) Anyway, I’m joking.

So then, so first of all you destroyed your peace, before relaxed, peace, destroyed. Your heart, your inner life, turmoil, tightness, self-cherishing thought, ego, tightness, no inner peace, then anger. There’s also attachment. There’s so much suffering, filled, so all the mental garbage. Then, with these delusions then create negative karma, not fulfilling the wishes of the other sentient beings. It becomes obstacle to the other being’s happiness. Creates obstacles. That’s the present situation. Then there’s effect of your action—not positive but negative. There’s immediate negative effect to the other person–doesn’t give inner peace and happiness, doesn’t give and gives unhappiness to the other person, suffering. So it makes the other person unhappy. Then even it causes the other person to get angry to you. So what happens is you are creating the negative karma, which brings unhappiness to both of you; creates unhappy negative world.

Then the other long-term effect, result, is rebirth in–depending on how heavy it is—in the hell, hungry ghost, or animal realms. Because the motivation of the act is attachment, grasping this life’s pleasure. Then there’s self-cherishing thought, of course. Like that, so makes your life, other person’s life totally unhappy. Then there’s long-term effect, very heavy suffering in the lower realms for unbelievable many billions, zillions eons of suffering. Unbelievable.

So now with good heart cherishing the other sentient being, seeking happiness for that person, your attitude opposite to ego, self-cherishing thought. So the good heart cherishing, obtaining happiness for others. So with this then you listen to what the other person wanted.

I’ve now lost, I forgot many times anyway which was which. [Rinpoche is referring to the objects he was moving on the table in his example.] Now this is what the other person wanted. By thinking of all the benefits, as much as possible the benefits of cherishing the other person, seeking, obtaining happiness for the other person, so from this attitude it opens the door for all your happiness, all the happiness of future lives. From there also it can help liberation then highest enlightenment. It opens the door for all your happiness. When you cherish that person, seeking, obtaining happiness for that person—that becomes opening the door of, so then you achieve, becomes cause to achieve the skies of all the benefits of happiness, not only temporary but also ultimate.

Then as a long-term result of this your positive attitude cherishing and giving happiness, then you are able to liberate numberless sentient beings from the oceans of suffering, causes, and bring to full enlightenment, from each realm, numberless beings. So the benefit is just unbelievable. So thinking of the benefits, thinking of this, space, skies of all these benefits, all these long-term benefits that you can receive, then you are so happy to do that, to give up your ego, self-cherishing thought, and cherish the other sentient beings, obtain happiness, okay?

Now here, now the last thing, so here with this fill two purposes: you are able to make the other person happy and you are happy. This one action cherishing that person, then accepting what the person wants—this one action fulfills two purposes: makes you happy because of all these benefits what you get, then makes the other person very happy, then you don’t create negative karma. Totally unnecessary crazy thing to create negative karma to long term to suffer in the lower realms. And you don’t cause the other person to be involved in the same, to be born in the lower realms, and unhappiness now and keep the grudge and then make to rise anger again and again. Obstacle to develop your mind, to complete all the realizations and to cause all the happiness to all , to every sentient beings.

So this is an example in our daily life, we try to live our life with the good heart cherishing others, seeking, obtaining happiness for others as much as possible. Then when you are at home, you are able to make the whole family happy, I mean, your companion, your children as much as possible. When you are in the office, you are able to make everybody happy. So wherever you are, whether you are staying alone on the moon (laughter), so wherever you are, in the cave or moon or wherever, so happy, your life so happy, your mind is full of joy, so happy, and you see so much meaning of your life, meaningful. With this good heart, you are always benefiting to others, day and night. Even you go to sleep for others, for all living beings’ happiness. So even if you eat food, drink, how many coffee you drink, chocolate you drink (laughter), everything is for all living beings’ happiness. Then your work in the office being secretary or cleaning or driving or whatever job you are doing, with this heart, this is for everybody, for all living beings’ happiness. So how many hours doing job, eight hours doing job or twelve hours doing job, so everything becomes Dharma. So here Dharma means which protects you from suffering and the cause of suffering, the negative thoughts, delusions. So that’s the meaning of Dharma when I say Dharma. Which stops the action of harming to yourself, harming others. On top of that what you are doing is benefiting to yourself and causing happiness to other sentient beings. All the different levels of happiness to cause others happiness of this life, our life to benefit to others, causing happiness of this life to others. Then more important service than that, what is not much known to the world. There are many people do the service for others, causing happiness of this life to others, but what is not known is even more important service happiness, causing happiness of all the future lives to others, numberless living beings, the very long run the future life happiness to others. Now even more important service to others is bringing them in true cessation of suffering by ceasing the cause of suffering. So by actualizing the true path, then to bring to enlightenment, okay? Okay, I think stop there.

So I think that’s, maybe one question?
Ven. Paloma [translating a male student’s question]: If everybody wants to be happy, why there are so many problems, if everybody wants happiness in the world, then why there are so many problems, so much fighting, wars, and everything? Even the politicians they could help to have more happiness. If we want to be happy, why we don’t have happiness (laughter) and we have so many wars and problems in Mexico, in the States, everywhere, no? Everyone wants to be happy but we have just the opposite.
Rinpoche: I gave the answer at the very beginning. (laughter) “Blame everything to one—your own ego, self-cherishing thought from where all the problems come from. Then meditate on the kindness of, to all, from one’s own side, meditate kindness to all.” When this practice is done, then the world will have perfect peace and happiness. The political people, those with the influence and power, they can cause so much happiness to many millions of people in their own country, other countries, the whole world can have. If you change, what you can do is unbelievable but if you don’t change, if this practice is not done, the constantly cherishing the I then not realizing how others are so precious, so kind; that all your past, present, future happiness, everything comes from them. Without that, then the problem, so want happiness, want many things but doesn’t happen because what you are doing is the cause of suffering, it’s not the cause of happiness. So as I mentioned, so as the quotation I mentioned at the very beginning. So the answer was given from the very beginning. (laughter)

So I think maybe that’s all.

Ven. Paloma [translating for male student]: What is the mind?
Rinpoche: Alle. (laughter) Now with this it’s time to go to sleep. This means it’s time to go to sleep (laughter). So there’s a body and mind. Mind is—first of all you have to understand it’s formless. Because formless, it has no color or shape. But which nature is clear, clear, perceiving object. That is the definition, characteristic of the mind, yeah, so ?sel _____ rigpa, that’s the definition of the mind. As we say body and mind, mind, okay? So it’s a very interesting phenomenon.

So maybe third, then maybe stop there.
Ven. Paloma: One more?
Ven. Paloma [translating]: Rinpoche, sometimes for example we are in an experience and it’s something that we have the feeling that we already have been in that place or we already have had that experience. Sometimes happen that, no? Something comes to your mind and you say, “Oh, this I already have experienced in the past.” Then he asked, “Is that true that we already had the same things maybe in the past?”
Rinpoche: Yes, that’s possible, yes. Also, when you meet people, some people you feel like not new. You feel that you have met before. Before doesn’t mean in this life, life before this, but you never met, in this life the first time. But you feel it is not new to meet that person. So those are your karma expressing that you have met that person in the recent past lives. So your karma it’s telling that. It does have meaning.

Sorry, I talked on and on, my old habit on and on, so then didn’t have much time for discussion. Going to chant some mantra. The first one is future buddha’s mantra, Maitreya Buddha. It has so much benefit but one particular benefit only this has is when Maitreya Buddha descends in this world to reveal Dharma like Shakyamuni Buddha did and then at that time, if you heard the mantra, even animals hear the mantra), then that time Maitreya Buddha will look for and you become the first disciple of Maitreya Buddha and receive teachings and you receive prediction for enlightenment, that you are going to become enlightened. Maitreya Buddha will give prediction that you will become enlightened. And also it helps to keep the mind in virtue, in positive.

[Lama Zopa Rinpoche chants Maitreya Buddha’s mantra.]

This has also another important benefit. By hearing this mantra, you don’t get born in the lower realms. So it’s very powerful.

Now Medicine Buddha mantra has also the same benefit,  you don’t get reborn in the lower realms because it’s so powerful. And very powerful for purification and collecting extensive merits. For everything, it’s like wish-fulfilling mantra.

So please everybody pray: Due to all the three-time merits--past, present, future merits collected by me, past, present, future merits collected by others, may the ultimate good heart, bodhicitta, cherishing all sentient beings, seeking happiness for all sentient beings and wishing to achieve enlightenment for sentient beings, may this be actualized within one’s own heart, one’s own family members, may this be actualized in the hearts of everybody in Guadalajara, in Mexico, and all the rest of the world, in the hearts of all sentient beings without delay even a second. In whose heart it is generated, bodhicitta is generated, may it be increased.

Especially may it be generated in the hearts of all the leaders of the world. So how much peace and happiness in the world it depends also them very much.

And then in the hearts of all the different religious people; not only Buddhist but Muslim, Hindu, Catholic, all the different religious, bodhicitta to be actualized in all their hearts. And as well as bodhicitta to be actualized in all the leaders in mainland China.

Jang chhub sem chhog rin po chhe….

So, gracias, gracias. (laughter)

[Lama Zopa Rinpoche speaks Tibetan to someone and that person answers in Tibetan.]

So the three monks came from South India. The monastery, there’s Sera, Ganden, Drepung, the three very large universities, the studying Buddhist philosophy, so it happened in Tibet founded by Lama Tsongkhapa, Lama Tsongkhapa’s disciples. So now since His Holiness the Dalai Lama and many lamas, those who were able to escape from Tibet, they founded the monasteries Sera, Ganden, Drepung and continued their Dharma education, the studying Buddhist philosophy, very extensive sutra, tantra, so established in India. There are monks here from Ganden Shartse, so Sera has Sera Me, Je; Ganden has Shartse and Jangtse, within there are two monasteries. Then Drepung has Losel-ling, Gomang, _______. So they are from Shartse but they are not the, there are some khamtsens who practice the protector that His Holiness, I have been advising for many years to not practice, that’s no good for yourself and for general Buddhadharma and for the world. But they are ones who are following to His Holiness’s advice. They came to do some fundraising for their education, ?Gomang ______, yeah, needs building or the education, so if anybody wants to help, can help.
