Stomach and Digestive Problems

Diarrhea
Rinpoche related some advice a student had given him regarding diarrhea.

A student told me that diarrhea stops immediately if you drink the juice of canned pineapple and eat pineapple.

Stomach Illness
A young student, who was very humble, was very sick with a serious condition involving a swelling in her stomach. Rinpoche wrote the following letter to her.

My very dear Kelly,

I checked and it would be very good for you to recite theDiamond Cutter Sutra 30 times as soon as possible. This would be very beneficial for your health.

You may not think that you are very important, and also your mother may not think that she is very important, but you are both very important in the world because of your intelligence and dedication, but mostly because of your devotion. Without doubt, this is the foundation of the path to enlightenment, the basis of bringing all sentient beings out of suffering and to the highest enlightenment. Along with Dharma education, you can bring so much benefit to the world. Your mind is full of potential. With blessings and devotion, you can liberate countless ants and mosquitoes, and you can gain realizations on the path. The reason why?—devotion. Devotion is like the fuel that runs a car; devotion is like electricity, which allows so many people to do so many things, like having lights in the city. So many things happen due to electricity. Devotion is like the fuel for airplanes. Think about these things. Your life is very precious, and for this reason you should have a long and healthy life to benefit others.

Are you doing the practice “giving pieces to the torma”? This practice purifies pollution that comes from selling the Dharma. It seems there is some connection with past actions like this, because this is the specific reason for this puja/practice.

When I come to your city, I can give the lung to you and to all the sentient beings living inside your body. All those sentient beings are not labeled Kelly. All those sentient beings in the future could be your disciples.

Chronic Ulcers
A student who suffered from chronic ulcers wrote to Rinpoche asking for advice as to which practices to do.

My very dear Charles,
Thank you for your kind letter. I am sorry for the many eons’ delay.

According to my observations, this is what you should do for your health:

1) Every day perform Medicine Buddha practice.

2) Have four Naga Pujas performed. The geshe at your Dharma center can do these for you.

3) Perform prostrations to the 35 Buddhas, reciting the 35 Buddhas’ names as you prostrate.

Then, according to my observations, it would be very good for you to be treated by a Tibetan doctor. I will give you his details. It is also good for you to continue taking the Tibetan medicine that you are taking now. Also, these additional Tibetan medicines would be beneficial:

1) Moon Crystal: take four a week for nine weeks, with a day’s break between pills, so take one every second day.

2) Kurkyen: take three times a day for two weeks.

Please practice tong-len. Use your sickness to develop bodhicitta, to achieve enlightenment, and to be able to enlighten all sentient beings.

A Rinpoche I know took the aspect of having cancer recently. He had all the chemotherapy treatment, but when I saw him recently he said that even though he had all the treatments, the ultimate one, the one that had such a miraculous result was tong-len. This Rinpoche has the aspect of old age, and usually it would be very difficult to recover as well as he has. He said the heart practice is tong-len.

With much love and prayers...

Mantra and Practice for Sickness and Indigestion
Rinpoche recommended the following mantra and practice for people with problems with sickness and indigestion.

“I prostrate to the three rare sublime ones.

Chom den dezin Shegpa dar Champa yang tangpa Zopa Sangye Segsol gerkyi gyalpo Chagtsa lo*

“I prostrate to the destroyer qualified gone beyond one, gone as it is, having destroyed the enemy, perfectly completed Buddha (awakened realized one) victorious one burning taking light

Tayata Hure huthe huta gar hanee soha”*

Recite this on your hand and then massage your belly with your hand. This purifies sickness and indigestion.

This method was given by Buddha to benefit sentient beings, to pacify their sufferings, and to fulfill their wishes for happiness. This mantra is from the Tsungdu in the Kangyur—the translated, direct teachings of the Buddha.
