Coma
Rinpoche sent the following advice for a student who was in a coma.

I am sending a blessed photo of Medicine Buddha for the man in a coma to the Dharma center. When it arrives put the picture on the pillow above the man’s head. The family and other people should make strong prayers to Medicine Buddha, recite Medicine Buddha mantra, and visualize beams of nectar being emitted from Medicine Buddha and entering his head. They should recite Medicine Buddha mantra next to him and around him, saying it out loud.

Also, you can visualize the seven Medicine Buddhas on his head, recite the seven Medicine Buddhas’ names, and make strong requests to each Medicine Buddha that the four things are purified (all sickness, spirit harm, negative karma, and defilements). Think that he is immediately purified, then that he has received all the qualities, from guru devotion up to enlightenment, especially bodhicitta. After reciting each Buddha’s name, think that Medicine Buddha fully accepts your request. For the last Medicine Buddha (of the seven) recite at least one mala of the name mantra, or more. Think and visualize strongly that it is purifying the four things, and then think that Medicine Buddha melts into light and absorbs into him.

This is the mantra pacifying all sickness:

TADYATA / VAJRA VAJRA / MAHA VAJRA / SARBHA BHAYA DHI / HANA HANA VAJRA NA SVAHA /

Visualize Guru Shakyamuni Buddha above the sick person. Visualize light beams radiating out, pacifying all sicknesses, obstacles etc.

It is also good for him to wear the protection of White Umbrella and Most Secret Hayagriva – you can organize this at the center.

It also comes out very beneficial to burn Hayagriva torma pills, 4-5 each day, and for each session to last an hour or more. Burn them close to the patient so the smoke goes near him. How many Hayagriva torma pills do you have?

I will also send you a little bit of water from all the holy places where I have been collecting it. The water is from:

· Mount Kailash
· Maratika (holy place of Padmasambhava)
· Lake Manasarova in Tibet – tasting this you will be reborn in the pure land of Vajrayogini
· Pabongka Rinpoche’s cave in Tibet – this is where Pabongka Rinpoche had a vision of Heruka, and the water dripping in this cave is in the sound of Vajrayogini mantra
· Lawudo Lama’s cave
· Potala Palace in Tibet
· Wu-Tai Shan Mountain in China – extremely precious water
· Reting in Tibet

This water is extremely rare and precious. I will send it to you tomorrow. You should sprinkle it on his body, specifically using kusha grass, so the water touches his skin a few times each day. Cut a few strands of kusha grass, so the ends can be dipped into the precious water, and sprinkle it on his face and body, so it touches his skin, at least four times a day.

If there is water left over, keep it for other people who are sick. Please understand that this water is extremely rare and precious.

The text Serwer Ngada needs to be recited by the geshe. Geshe-la should recite it in front of the man in the coma. The text is in Sung Du (Compilation of Holy Speech). Geshe-la should also do gektor and I am also going to do gektor.

Epilepsy
Rinpoche sent the following advice to a student who had epilepsy because of a tumor in his brain. He had had no seizures in ten years, but the seizures had just started again.

My very dear Joe,
Thank you very much for your very kind letter.

I checked regarding your questions and you should practice Vajrapani Hayagriva Garuda practice [mantra: om vajrapani hayagriva garuda hum phet]. Please recite six malas a day, with meditation. If you haven't received any great initiation then you should visualize the deity in front of you and still do the meditation and recitation. If you have received a great initiation then you can still visualize the deity in front, and then generate yourself as the deity.

I am very sorry that I did not meet you when I visited your country, but hope to meet you next time.

I am making prayers for you and I also have asked the Sangha in my house to dedicate animal liberations and the making of long life tsatsas for you.

With much love and prayers...

Brain Disease
Rinpoche sent a card with the following advice to a very sick student, a young person, who had a type of brain disease.

My very dear Carl,
Please enjoy:

1) Being a human being,
2) having met the most precious Dharma,
3) having met the most precious gurus, like Geshe Sopa Rinpoche and His Holiness Ling Rinpoche,
4) having met the compassion Buddha in human form: His Holiness the Dalai Lama,
5) the practice, especially bodhicitta, as well as emptiness, and that
6) you have met tantra—the quick path to enlightenment.

With big love and prayer,
Zopa

Multiple Sclerosis and Spine Problems
Rinpoche wrote the following to a student who had problems with her spine and MS. Her letter and Rinpoche’s response are below.

Dearest Lama Zopa Rinpoche,
First of all, I would like to thank you with all my heart for everything that you are doing and that you have chosen to do in this life. Thank you so much. It makes me so happy, and I know, even though I don’t know much, but I do know and feel that you and your thoughts are of great help to others. I wish you much happiness, offer you much merit, a full and happy life, and that all your wishes come to fruition immediately.

I am writing you for advice on bettering my practice and also bettering my health if possible. I have MS, Juvenile Diabetes, osteoporosis, cervical and lumbar spine problems (bulging discs), and my symptoms include not seeing clearly, a shaking right hand, so it’s hard to pick things up, write, etc., severe pain in the left side of my head, upper left side of my back, and left arm, the inability to walk alone, and swelling in my ankles. The pain occurs every night and I can’t sleep.

I feel I’m burning a lot of negative karma! And I’m glad of that, but my health problems do distract me. I have taken refuge with the very kind geshe at the center and in my clearer moments I am most happy that I have so much, including the ability to practice and a good partner who supports me.

In terms of medicine I take – the doctors who have seen me prescribed many different medications for both my pain and my inability to sleep. I stopped taking almost all of the drugs, as most of them did not work very effectively. The only drug that has helped me sleep was prescribed by my neurologist in the US and one that’s in Canada, but it’s only approved in Canada, which is where my partner took me to try it. It’s made from marijuana so I can’t get any more unless I get it illegally. I don’t know what to do regarding that.

I make offerings to the 35 Buddhas, pray to the Venerable Green Tara, Medicine Buddha, Avalokiteshvara, His Holiness, and dedicate merit to all Dharma teachers, including Geshe Tsulga, Ribur Rinpoche, Lama Yeshe, and you. And the Four Immeasurables help me think of all beings, which is great, and which I love.

I would like to end my self-cherishing and I pray for that every day. Although it feels so difficult now, I feel I am practicing and praying more due to needs because of my poor health. But I would like to have better health and I would like to practice better as well. I know I need a good heart no matter what.

In my not so clear moments – which is most all the time – I cry and worry.

My partner writes music, plays guitar, and sings. I used to dance and choreograph, but I sing with him now. We made you a CD and wrote a song when you came to the Center last (not that I would ever expect you to remember). It was titled the “Mani Song”. I mention it as I was so happy to do that with my partner, and I was so happy to be able to see you and also give that to you. I also received a stupa from you and a Medicine Buddha card that I have on my altar. Thank you so much! Your kindness and generosity are vast. And thank you for reading this long letter.

My best to you.
Much love and peace,
Tina Abbott

My very dear Tina,

Thank you for your very kind letter. Already you are doing excellent practices for your health. It would be great if you could continue, especially Medicine Buddha, and how you are praying and thinking is excellent.

I checked regarding pujas that can be done that can help you, and according to my observations this is what came out. You can ask your friend at the center to help you to arrange them:

1) Che Trul puja – this puja can be done by the geshe.
2) Shernyi Do Dok puja – this puja can be also done by the geshe.
3) Have the Prajnaparamita text read (whole text). This can be done at Kopan Monastery or Sera Jhe Monastery.
4) Gyab shi puja (pronounced Geshe) – this puja can also be done by the geshe.

Then I will send you some Tibetan medicine:

1) Ratnas precious pill: take two a week for five weeks
2) Khyur kyen: four each day for five weeks
3) Mantra to eat

It would also be very good if you are able to do something like yoga or chi gong.
The practices that came out very good for you, apart from what you are already doing, are:

1) Black Manjrushri: Visualize the deity in front of you, and as you recite the mantra, beams of nectar emit and purify you of all sickness, spirit harm, negative karma, and defilements.

2) Recite 2000 (minimum) Mitukpa mantras with practice, doing a very strong visualization.

Please make your life most meaningful with the thought of bodhicitta.

With much love and prayers...

Multiple Sclerosis
A student had multiple sclerosis and other problems and found it very hard to be around people at all. She had written to Rinpoche previously for advice. Rinpoche sent the following additional advice to her.

Dear Janet,

I hope you are well and happy. Last night I checked about some additional things that you can do for your health. It is quite a lot, so do what you can.

1) Vajra claws: do twice a day for two months.

2) Do four malas a day of “Destroying all the Negative Karma” for one month.

3) Gyabshi puja: Ask the geshe at your Dharma center to do this for you.

4) Chedrol puja (Liberating from Naga Harm): Ask the geshe at your Dharma center to do this for you. It is best if you are present.

5) Recite seven or more malas daily of the Naga King name. This is very good purification for you and for all sentient beings.

6) Print (photocopy on yellow paper) 40 long life sutras for three weeks.

Changes in Brain Tissue
A student wrote to Rinpoche saying a brain scan showed changes in the white tissue in her brain. The radiologist could not explain what had caused them. The student was unsure whether to pursue western medicine for the condition and wrote to Rinpoche for advice.

My very dear Jackie,
According to my observations, it doesn't look good for you to follow western treatment. It may sound good at the beginning, but according to my observations it won’t solve anything.

You need two pujas to be performed:

1) Sher Nyi Du Dok
2) Liberating from Naga Harm: Lu Dang Sadakgi Dondrol. You have to be present when this puja is done.

You need to practice Lion Faced Dakini. Also, you need to receive the jenang of Lion Faced Dakini.

There is one auspicious prayer that needs to be recited ten times. I will do that and also I will ask a geshe, but I have to find the prayer first in the Kangyur and send it to the geshe.

You need an increasing fire puja done.

Then, the most beneficial practice is to recite the prayer "Reciting the Names of Manjrushri" (Manjusangita) every day. This is the most beneficial prayer to develop wisdom and memory. There are a few stories of how beneficial this practice has been for people.

One Kagyu lama, who wrote two excellent English/Tibetan dictionaries, very extensive ones, and knows very difficult terms from many texts, has an excellent memory because when he was young he recited Manjusangita four times a day.

One ex-abbot of the lower tantric college, who taught many students in South India, was able to memorize one long page of a Tibetan text by looking at it only four times because he recited Manjusangita.

Geshe Donyo, the current abbot of Sera Jhe Monastery, is able to memorize so many prayers due to reciting Manjusangita.

This is a most profound tantric text that brings great purification and leaves positive imprints for your quick enlightenment.

Also, when I come to Aptos there is one more thing for you to do that I won’t mention now.
With much love and prayers...

Coma
Rinpoche said the following while watching a television news item about a patient in a coma.

In such situations, usually we perform a few pujas or ask a monastery to perform them and that’s all.

I think Medicine Buddha puja is most important in this case. It should be done 30, 40, or 50 times, making strong prayers. This could bring about some change, although it may not be possible for the person to avoid the karma of the coma if it is heavy karma.

Pujas are related to nagas and other beings. What is important is to choose the exact, correct puja for each person. Doctors diagnose and treat sicknesses, and pujas have a similar effect if the correct one is done well, by the right person. A purer motivation and more compassion give power to the puja. Pure morality gives power, and also the realization of emptiness. The bottom line is you have to have faith.

There are also pujas which can be done on the body itself, using protections, which relieve a person from harm.
