By Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche
Shakyamuni Center, Taichung, Taiwan (Archive #1604)

Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave these teachings during Amitabha and White Tara initiations and a White Tara retreat at Shakyamuni Center, Taichung, Taiwan, February 18-21, 2007. The teachings include lung  (oral transmission) of the Amitayus mantra and the long-life sutra.

Please note: the teaching was being translated into Chinese and while we have edited those sections out, you may still occasionally hear the Chinese interpreter's voice in the background.

Bodhicitta Motivation, Kindness of Others, Methods to Prolong Life

So the purpose of taking tonight the White Tara, Wish-Granting Wheel, the White Tara long-life initiation, that is, the real purpose is not just because you desire happiness, because you desire happiness for yourself, so therefore taking the long-life initiation, that’s not proper motivation. So the, because that is not the meaning of one’s own life, just living the life seeking happiness for oneself, with that motivation and that, engaging such as activity, that is not the meaning of our life, that’s not the meaning why we have taken a human body this time. As I mentioned last night many times, this precious human body, especially perfect human rebirth, that you have all the opportunity, whatever Dharma that you wish to practice, you can practice.

So, even we chant one mala of OM MANI PADME HUM or NAMO AMITOFU or whatever mantra we chant, even you chant that because you want happiness, you want to achieve happiness and, but for your own benefit you want to be born in a pure land or you want to achieve happiness, even you are looking for, even the motivation seeking the liberation, free forever from the oceans of samsaric suffering and cause, delusion and karma, even your motivation is that, even the recitation of mantra is done, one mala of mantra is done even with that, thought seeking liberation for oneself, but still wasted life, it still becomes meaninGroup laughsess because compared if you did it with bodhicitta, if you did even a mala of recitation of mantra with bodhicitta then every sinGroup laughse recitation, every sinGroup laughse mantra that you recite, your action that recited every sinGroup laughse mantra, so if it’s one mala it’s 108, example, then 108 times you chanted mantra, so each mantra you recited, each action of reciting mantra becomes a cause of, because a cause of enlightenment, to achieve the cessation of, complete qualities of realization and cessation. So each action of reciting mantra becomes a cause of enlightenment and become cause to enlighten all sentient beings, so able to liberate the numbeRinpoche laughsess sentient beings from the oceans of samsaric suffering and bring to enlightenment. That every sinGroup laughse recitation of mantra, the 108 beads, then every mantra that was recited, every one of them, with every one of them done with the motivation to achieve enlightenment for sentient beings, the thought to benefit for all sentient beings, with each recitation, each mantra, each recitation, you collected limitless skies of merits. So therefore, each one become cause of happiness of sentient beings. So that has the greatest advantage, benefit, merit. So compared to that then this, even one mala of reciting mantra, but even though the motivation is pure in the sense unstained by attachment seeking future samsara, samsaric pleasure, the motivation is pure, unstained by that, and seeking liberation, free forever from the samsara and cause of samsara for oneself, so you compare to the recitation is done, one mala of recitation is done with the bodhicitta motivation, so you can see how the benefits are, how great, how unbelievable it is. So therefore, even you do recitation of mantra with the renunciation, the thought of seeking liberation, the renunciation of samsara, so it’s unbelievable loss. With each recitation you collected limitless skies of merit, then you lost all that. Then each recitation of mantra becoming cause of enlightenment, you lost that. And each recitation of mantra becoming cause of the happiness of all sentient beings, you lost that. So there’s still, compared to that it’s still a wasted life.

So that’s an example, so rest of the day whatever we do, eating, walking, sitting, sleeping, doing job, studying Dharma, meditation, then whatever we do, so doing business so forth, then these things should be like I gave the example of one mala, reciting one mala with bodhicitta how it is, so that’s the purpose of our life, living, why we have taken this precious human body, especially a perfect human rebirth, and why we should be alive every day, why it’s so important to be alive, why we should live than dying, then choose to live than to die, why it’s important. So everything is to benefit for other sentient beings. All the comforts the life, that we make so much expenses to survive, to have comfort, so much for shelter, so much expenses for shelter and so much expenses for food and clothing and everything, why making the life so expensive, so much expensive, to have comfort and to live. However, so all that become meaningful if our attitude is to benefit for other sentient beings. If our attitude of life, if there’s no thought of benefiting others, then everything becomes meaninGroup laughsess, empty. I’m not talking about emptiness [Rinpoche laughs], ultimate nature, but empty, there’s no even the name meaningfulness of life, it doesn’t exist. So even the name doesn’t exist. So I’m talking about empty by that sense. So totally doesn’t exist, like that.

So, we are, our life is totally dependent on sentient beings, everything, every sinGroup laughse comfort, happiness, survival, every second of survival, to be a human being, having a perfect human body, every sinGroup laughse thing is totally dependent on the kindness of sentient beings. So for example, having this precious human body, especially the perfect human body, that which gives opportunity to practice Dharma, that can achieve the three great meanings, the highest one is enlightenment, even in this life can achieve, one has received a perfect human body to practice like those many other holy beings who achieved enlightenment in one life, so received the same, received the body that can do this, that can practice. So, all those who achieved enlightenment. So the human body, so we received the same, received the human body that can do that. So can be free from samsara by actualizing the four noble truths, be liberated from true suffering and true cause of suffering by actualizing the true path, so by learning Buddhadharma, what Buddha has taught. So anyway, so this completely by the kindness of the, one way is completely by the kindness of the parents, the father and mother, so they have to create the karma to receive you, your consciousness to be conceived in the mother’s womb. They have to have the karma from their side. From their side they have to create the karma and then if the mother did abortion then you wouldn’t have this incredible opportunity now, all this incredible opportunity what we have been having up to now, and also in the future, so they wouldn’t have happened due to the abortion or didn’t take care and died. So you can see completely clear, completely totally can see how this totally is the mother’s kindness that having this precious human body, especially perfect human body, that there’s unbelievable opportunity what we have been receiving, especially to practice Dharma, not only just samsaric pleasure, comfort, all that material gain, not only that but especially Dharma practice, all this.

Then able to meet all these unbelievable, no question about actual living Chenrezig, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, able to meet and able to hear teachings, that’s unbelievable, first of all that is the most, something very impossible thing that happened in our life, and then there are many great, extremely rare to find in this woRinpoche laughsd, many great masters, such as Kyabje Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche, Kyabje Chöden Rinpoche, many other great masters, then also not only met, not only fortune to meet, have met, but especially then received complete teachings sutra and tantra, complete teachings of the whole path to enlightenment, lam-rim, foundation the common and uncommon the tantric complete path, so that’s just, perfectly qualified guru that’s extremely rare to find in this woRinpoche laughsd, that most human beings don’t have, don’t have the opportunity, doesn’t happen, doesn’t have the karma. So anyway, that’s, as we have. So you can see now, all that, because you have received this precious human body, perfect human body which can communicate, can meet and communicate, receive teachings, all that, so you can see the parents’ kindness, so it came from parents’ kindness. So you can see, it dependent on their kindness, all this one receives.

That and gave this body and then each day protected one’s own life from hundreds of dangers, the mother herself, the mother or father then also maybe they hired other, they hired people, pay salary and take care, however, so again protected one’s own life from hundreds of dangers each day, so you can see now how if they didn’t do that you wouldn’t have this opportunity now, so it completely came from their kindness and now only that, they gave education, the helped to get education, they led in the path of the woRinpoche laughsd and so starting from teaching how to walk and how to speak, all that, then all the manners, so many things taught starting from there, then all the education, so they helped, they led in path to the woRinpoche laughsd. So again, so wouldn’t have this opportunity again if they didn’t do that. So anyway, so you can see again how so much of our life is dependent on their kindness, all these incredible opportunities that we have.

And also the every day, after the birth, then during conception, birth, then after birth they beared so much hardships, the mother and also the father beared so much hardships day and night, there’s worry, fears, concern of one’s own health and life, day and night and then always so much worry and then so suffered so much exhaustion day and night taking care of you, looking after you. So worked so hard, beared so much hardships, difficulties of body and mind, the exhaustion so much. Not only that, not only they suffered so much, but they created so much negative karma for your well-being, so which they have to experience in the future, not only the difficulties what they experienced for you, for your well-being, but they created so much negative karma, so they have to experience all those sufferings in the lower realms. So you can see now if they didn’t do, if didn’t bear hardships during those six, nine months, whatever, birth, then didn’t bear hardships, pain, all those after birth then we wouldn’t have this incredible opportunity now having this precious human body and all this unbelievable opportunity like a dream to practice Dharma, to benefit others.

So, simply by this reason you can see now here, so if we live our life with a selfish mind and with the desire and anger and all these, ignorance, so you can see now, that which harms to yourself, which harms to other sentient beings, that itself is harming to yourself, so now, then now you can see there’s no repaying kindness, nothing good is done to make worthwhile the parents, their kindness, or how much they sacrificed their life and all that, so there’s nothing worthwhile what you did, something useful, nothing, so if one live the life in that way, then on top of that harm others, other sentient beings, living life like that, with this attitude, which is harming to oneself, so that is, so it’s extremely sad, so it’s totally sad, that living the life this way and that unable to make one’s own life beneficial to the woRinpoche laughsd, I mean to other, yeah, I mean, not extensive to the woRinpoche laughsd but even just to others, in the family, the daily life, the people, the sentient beings, that you, that one meet, the ones around you, beneficial for them, at least beneficial to them, bring peace to them, bring peace and happiness to them and to yourself. So not even that, meaningful, useful even for yourself, bringing peace and happiness to yourself, not even that.

So then totally wasted the, so the parents, so many years that they sacrifice and all the worry, fear, created so much negative karma for your well-being, all this become totally wasted, meaninGroup laughsess, become meaninGroup laughsess.

So, when you think this way, the compassion has to rise to them. No choice, compassion has to rise to the parents, that therefore I must do something worthwhile, meaningful, do something that makes all the sacrifice of their life, they sacrificed their life to me, beared so much hardships, so, meaningful. So to not harm others, to not harm oneself, then at least to bring peace and happiness to others and to oneself, so that comes by practicing Dharma. So that makes worthwhile all their sacrificing, that they scarified their life to you, so many years of their life, so especially that you become beneficial to the woRinpoche laughsd, to others, even not extensively to the woRinpoche laughsd but the surrounding people, useful, beneficial, the life, then at least that, so makes worthwhile, not harming but bringing peace and happiness in this woRinpoche laughsd, particulaRinpoche laughsy then the surrounding people, then makes worthwhile the parents that they sacrificed the life for you and [pause] then this, so, yeah, so for that, so if one become harmful, not practicing Dharma, not living also with this positive mind, compassion so forth, as I mentioned yesterday, negative thoughts, then only harming others to oneself, then made their life empty, made the parents all they scarified their life, meaninGroup laughsess. So it’s kind of, so many years of their life, from conception time then so didn’t become useful what they did, the result didn’t become useful. Didn’t become useful towards the parents, didn’t become useful to others, didn’t become useful to yourself. So therefore, so by practicing Dharma with the positive attitude, especially bodhicitta then benefit others, making life beneficial for others, for that then for that reason then we need long life and taking White Tara initiation.

So same, if we extend the kindness, if one is employer, all your happiness, comfort, comes from the kindness of the employees, those people who are working for you, all your comfort, all your success comes from the people who are working for you in the company or whatever, came from their kindness. Your success came from, whatever, making money, whatever, kindness of the people who are working for you, the employees.

Then, if one is a student, their education, whatever it is, they receive the education and all that from the teacher, and the teacher having job to teach, all the success, then what is needed for the teacher also came from the kindness of the students, so that’s all dependent, what His Holiness says, interconnected or the…. So every situation like this, every situation that dependent on others’ kindness, whatever success we’re having, whatever comfort, happiness, we are experiencing, it’s all come from, totally dependent on others’ kindness. So every sinGroup laughse material that we have, for example, dress, so many people did work for this dress that you’re wearing now, the shoes and the hat and then the pants and jacket and [Rinpoche laughs] however, every piece, so if you think of the evolution back, so many sentient beings did work for that and beared hardships, suffered for these, then especially, ?if there’s silk, raw silk, skins, animal skins or silk, this clothing that came from animal body, so then no question, by suffering so much, they died for it.

So all the comfort, happiness, protection of our life by having house, so then as I normally mention there’s so many sentient beings during the construction, during laying the foundations, so many sentient beings, insects, worms, so many have to die and suffer for this and people have to work very hard under the hot sun, however, so many unimaginable sentient beings they suffered, they died, created negative karma for this so that’s how we receive the shelter, all this comfort, protection of our life. Then food, same. The fruit or the vegetable or the, so there are so many worms in the ground and so they have to die, be killed, then other people, other sentient beings they have to kill that, those worms who are eating the fruit, vegetables, by spraying, so so many sentient beings have to die, suffer, create negative karma, so then finally you get, so able to survive every day, every hour, every minute, second to be a human being and to have this precious human body, perfect human body to practice Dharma, there’s so many good things you can do like skies of, all the happiness up to enlightenment you can achieve and you can cause to other sentient beings, so totally you can see by their kindness, so many sentient beings for this food, one day’s food, one meal, so many sentient beings, numbeRinpoche laughsess sentient beings have to, if you think of the long-run evolution, like rice, have to die, have to suffer and some have to create negative karma. So, everything like that.

So therefore, life is totally dependent on sentient beings, so every comfort it’s the same. Even a good reputation, even people talking nice things, even people praising you makes you happy, so that depends on the kindness of that person. If that makes you happy when somebody praises you, that also depends on the kindness of that person. And if somebody gets angry to you, yeah, get upset, get angry to you, scold you or provoke you, whatever that person does, criticize you, saying nasty things, however, even that, especially that one is most kind being, because the guru, Buddha gave teachings how to practice patience, the guru gave teachings how to practice patience, but you need somebody who’s angry, but you need somebody whose mind is angry to you. Only then what the guru teaches you, what the Buddha teaches you, only then you can practice. You need that person who’s angry to you, who doesn’t like you, who hate you, so you need that. Without that you have no opportunity at all what the guru taught, what the Buddha taught, those teachings, thought transformation or the practicing the teachings on patience, how much they explain, you have no opportunity. So you need that, so just gave teaching to you, that’s not sufficient, that alone you don’t get realization of patience. So you have to have the enemy, you have to have that person who has anger, who doesn’t like you, who has anger, who criticizes you, you have to have, who abuses you directly, abuses you or badly treats, so you have to have that. So now here it becomes, it’s not unwanted, it’s not no need, it’s most important need in your life, so that you can learn patience and complete the paramita of patience, achieve enlightenment, and then enlighten all sentient beings. So, without that, completing the paramita of patience, without that, the practice, the attainment, without that cannot achieve full enlightenment, and can’t enlighten, you can’t liberate the numbeRinpoche laughsess sentient beings from the ocean of samsaric sufferings. So that one is the most important, so that one is the most kind one, who reminds or who gives opportunity to put the teachings that you receive, to put into practice.

Then other thing is, all the numbeRinpoche laughsess past happiness, present, future happiness, liberation, enlightenment, everything, every sinGroup laughse comfort and pleasure day and night we experience, everything we receive by the kindness of every hell being, every hungry ghost, every animal, every human being, sura, asuras, intermediate state beings, by the kindness of everyone that we received. Every insect that we see in the road, every bird, dog, every people that we see in the road, everyone here, so wherever you go sentient beings that you see, people, animals, insects, whatever you see, so we receive from each of them all the happiness, including the liberation, enlightenment. So, the sentient beings, you see now how kind they are. Now here, with the last one, all that happiness, past, present, future, up to enlightenment, everything you receive by the kindness of each and every sinGroup laughse sentient being, come from each sentient being. Now this is here, most precious, most kind one. Most precious, most kind one. Every sentient being become most precious, most kind one in your life.

So now, so this is the reason, so now you can see why, even you chant one mala of OM MANI PADME HUM, but you seek liberation from samsara for yourself, how that is not a proper motivation, how that is still wasting life. Why? It should be for others, who are numbeRinpoche laughsess, the thought of seeking the happiness of numbeRinpoche laughsess sentient beings comes, then chant, example the mala of OM MANI PADME HUM, for the numbeRinpoche laughsess sentient beings, to obtain happiness to each and every sinGroup laughse sentient being, especially enlightenment. So therefore now, for this, so therefore now our meaning, purpose of our life and our job that is, our project or job or real job or meaning of life is to free the numbeRinpoche laughsess sentient beings from all the suffering and causes and to bring to enlightenment. So only that, nothing else. So to do that we need to achieve enlightenment and we need to attain the path, then offer service to sentient beings whatever way, whatever one can do, small or big, whatever, every day then most important is attaining the path to enlightenment for them, so for that then we need long life.

So, I think, I’m sorry. So I think tomorrow’s teaching happened already. [Group laughs, Rinpoche laughs] Yeah.

She-shei. [Group laughs] Unbelievable! [Rinpoche laughs]

So, those who have received blessing of White Tara and also who has life obstacles, then one of the methods is taking the long-life initiation, that’s one of the methods so that’s what is happening and also making the White Tara statue or paintings, that another extremely, very powerful to prolong the life, pacify life obstacles and especially on the Tibetan 8th, on the same day either you paint Tara or make tsa-tsa, so paint Tara, this White Tara, long-life deity, so paint Tara and same day finish, then consecrate, that Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo, great enlightened being explained that this is extremely powerful for, in order to pacify life obstacles and prolong the life, very, very powerful, on the Tibetan 8th making Tara painting or can be also a statue, so then consecrate the same day. So it could be also tsa-tsa, White Tara tsa-tsa, on the Tibetan 8th then on the same day after you made the tsa-tsa then consecrate, so same, a powerful means.

So there’s a story here that on, the lama had [pause, turning pages], that so to begin this story here, Tara is generally, all the actions of the buddhas manifested in the form of goddess, so which means to fulfill, which means to do the work for all sentient beings, to fulfill the wishes of sentient beings for happiness. Then particular Dromtönpa, Drom Chökyi Gyalpo, Drom the Dharma King, the translator of Lama Atisha in Tibet, Chenrezig, who is himself Chenrezig, Tara told, Tara promised Dromtönpa that, anybody who follow you, I will guide. Everyone who follow you, I will guide. Tara herself promised. So anyone who follow Kadam tradition, those like Kadampa life story, who practice that, who follow that, then that means Tara will naturally, when you follow Kadam tradition, Kadampa practice when you follow, the thought transformation and so forth, so Tara naturally looks after you, guides.

So this initiation, the practice where it came from, so from Lopon ?Ngagong ?Chi ?Takpa, from his collections, from the, this is taken by him from a text which contains the methods betraying the Lord of Death. So the teachings which came from Tara herself. Then Lama Dorje Denpa received the lineage from Lopon ?Ngagong ?Wang ?Chi ?Takpa, then Lama Dorje Denpa wrote many means of attaining the White Tara. Then from Lama Dorje Denpa, Lama Pari Lotsawa received the lineage. So many methods of the attainment of the White Tara translated into Tibetan language from Indian language, I guess, yeah, Indian. Then from Lama Pari Lotsawa, then Lama Lengakpa received the lineage, did a six-year retreat of White Tara, then he actually saw directly White Tara, received teachings from White Tara.

Then from Lama Lengakpa, Depa Rinpoche, this lama received the lineage. So when he was studying he has shown his palm to one who, Tagri, one who is said can read palms, Tagri of ?Lhadö, Lhadö is the name of the place. So that yogi he has shown his palm, Depa Rinpoche he has shown his palm to this yogi, the palm, probably means palm-reader of Lhadö. So then he said that, You, the monk, you have very good karma to practice Dharma but you can live only three years. You have no life, you have only three years of the life. Then also Depa Rinpoche himself he checked in dream many times, so then came out same answer that he will live only three years. Then he thought, if he could live for one year, no matter how much he would live, then he would, that I would like to spend my life, rest of the life only in pure Dharma. So then he thought to look for a virtuous friend who will show special instruction. Then he stopped doing studying then went to look for guru, who can give special instruction.

Then in the road, when he was at Nyermo, this place called Nyermo, I think near Lhasa, then he met Lama Lengakpa, this is Depa Rinpoche, met Lama Lengakpa, then Depa Rinpoche explained all the stories, then Lama Lengakpa said, I have a special method to eliminate obstacle to attaining the path to enlightenment. You, the yogi, relax. You relax. Be comfortable, relax. Comfortable mind and relax.

Then Lama Lengakpa gave all the teachings to him, all the means to attain White Tara, then told him, Now you don’t go other places but you stay here and meditate. Then he, Depa Rinpoche he did in that area, ?Lha ha lung, at this place, this area, he did, one-pointedly he did meditation in the cave for one month, one-pointedly he did meditation in the cave, then when about one month passed then he actually directly saw White Tara and the White Tara told him that you will be able to live for six years and you will benefit for sentient beings. Then, when that happened then he again requested to White Tara and White Tara said, Make my statue and then you will live for eleven years. Then he made a painting of White Tara, then he asked again to Tara, then said, Make another statue then you will be able to live for another ten years. Then that time made a statue of brass. So those, this painting of the, thangka or painting of the White Tara, the one did before then the statue which happened later, so this is regarded very blessed. So these two holy objects used to be in the Reting Monastery, the Dromtönpa’s monastery.

Then when he reached over eighty then again made request to Tara, then Tara said, You make another statue, my statue, then you will be able to live for many years. Then he made one painting on the wall, painting of White Tara, so totally lived for ninety-five years. So generally, of course, especially in the West, there are, I mean there are many, I mean now becoming less and less, but there are still, compared to the East, in the West there are many people, quite a number of people who live a hundred years old, there are quite a number of people who is aged a hundred years or even more, and like there happened who lived to 115, I think I saw passed away, so there happened like that.

So however, so here this is talking about, here we have to understand the point of the story is that that lama had life obstacles, only three years to live, so you have to understand that, so so many years is possible, so many years by making Tara painting and the statue, then postponed for a long time, so somebody who had life obstacles, so this is, that is the point. I mean, otherwise, somebody who has the karma to live for a hundred years or more than, 105, 110, so even 115 I think recently happened, saw that, but here you have to understand here somebody who has a life obstacle, cannot live long, then the method, so you have to understand how making a White Tara painting is so powerful, a painting or a statue.

And also by practicing White Tara you are able to increase also wisdom. From the first, Gyalwa Gendun Drubpa, who is the first reincarnation of, the close lineage, close reincarnation, founded Tashi Lhunpo monastery, the first incarnation of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Gyalwa Gendun Drubpa, so that practiced, so achieved wisdom through White Tara.
