Saturday June 10th: Teachings Part C

The purpose of living, purpose of life that is, not just to have wealth. That alone is not the meaning of life, purpose of living. To become famous in this world or to become well known to everybody, to become famous in this world, also just that is not the purpose of, not the meaning of life. And even to have, even to be, just to become a scholar, just to have an education, even that, just that is not the purpose of, meaning of life, purpose of living, even just that. So, even studying Buddhism, just intellectual understanding alone that still is not the purpose of life, meaning of life, just intellectual understanding alone, just the education of it alone, because without practice, as I mentioned also the day of the opening, the essence of Buddhism that, which is what differentiates from others that is compassion to every, each and every single sentient being, any religious person, any, without discrimination of religion or nationality or color or race, to every human being, to every, any other sentient being, to every sentient being, that who has suffering, whose mind is obscured, so to anybody, so compassion to everyone.

The life becomes meaningful, beneficial, when one, that essence of Buddhadharma, that compassion, when one generate, when one live the life with that, compassion towards others, without discrimination. So then only then the life become meaningful. That, like great bodhisattva, saint, Shantideva mentioned in Guide to a Bodhisattva’s Life, [Tibetan] also another, just by reading the prescription won’t help, won’t cure the patient’s sickness, just by reading. Or also mentioned, so you carry a huge load of medicine but you never take the medicine for you sicknesses, you never take, you just carry a huge load of medicine. Or you have a huge storage of medicine but when you’re sick you never take any medicine. So like that, anyway, it doesn’t help, it cannot heal just having medicine in the house or carrying on your back a huge load of medicine, that cannot cure your sicknesses. So you have to take it. So like that, so even the Buddhism, just only intellectual understanding, so that alone doesn’t fulfill the purpose of life, of living, if one doesn’t practice, put into action, put into practice.

So, one can be great scholar and then, a lot of knowledge, education, even Buddhism, great, can explain, memorized or can explain the whole entire Buddha’s teachings, those hundreds of volumes of Kangyur or the Tengyur, those commentaries by the pandits to Buddha’s teachings, so then all the scriptures composed by great lamas, those enlightened beings, great lamas of the four traditions, however, memorize, one can explain by heart everything, but however, without practice then there’s still suffering, still emotional problems there, pride, anger, attachment, everything is there before you learned everything, before you learned all these things, all these negative emotional thoughts, all these life problems is still the same, no change, still there, like you had before you learned all these things, still the same, or even worse, even bigger. So because the pride, also one thing is pride and many things, even the problems bigger. So like those examples, having a lot of medicine in the house or carrying but you never take and so your sickness never gets recovered.

So, without meditation, without Dharma, how much wealth one achieve in this world, even one become billionaire and zillionaire, trillionaire, zillionaire, how much one become, however, that without meditation, Dharma, in the life, then the, more and more, more one become wealthy, more dissatisfaction. There’s more mental suffering, dissatisfaction, developed more and more. So much misery in the life, inner, so there’s always hollow, empty, in one’s own heart, always something missing, no matter how much externally one gain. So, because you have everything, because could not get satisfaction, so much worse, the unhappiness, the misery of life, dissatisfaction, much heavier, so much unhappiness. Then, one rely on, there’s no meditation, there’s no Dharma in the life, then one rely upon alcohol, then you take refuge to alcohol. Then, even can’t eat food, so drink many bottles a day. Then you live the life with alcohol, all this depression, all this, there’s no other means so you rely upon the alcohol, then life become completely no meaning, totally meaningless. So life spent with alcohol, like that, and then no benefit to oneself, no benefit to other, no benefit to the world, no benefit to other sentient beings, only destroying one’s own life. Only destroying one’s own life and harms others. So with these negative thoughts, the selfish mind and the anger, because of desire then the anger, all this, jealous mind, so forth, harm to oneself, harm others.

So, as I mentioned, one very wealthy person in London, I have seen in the movie or, anyway, TV, I’m not sure. Maybe in the airplane, I’m not sure. So this very wealthy person in London, so he had a huge property, a huge building, so he never, from that he never find satisfaction so I think so miserable, so unhappy, even he achieved all this wealth. So he checked what is the cause, root of his suffering, his unhappiness, depression, all this. Then he thought, selling cars, because he became wealthy by selling cars, car business, so then he thought selling cars was the root of his business, sorry, root of his unhappiness. Then what he did was he ordered, he bought many toy cars. Then outside there’s where you, I think this may be for birds, water, you fill up with water and give to the birds, I think, this the container made of cement or whatever, outside in the ground. Then with his bodyguard he bought many toy cars and then he put inside and he burned, then he put kerosene then he burned, as a means, as antidote to his, he thought the root of the problem is selling cars, that’s how he became wealthy so, to destroy the antidote, to destroy the, eliminate the root of his problems, was to burn the cars.

Then also he moved, because most of the building is empty, I think, so then he moved, each night, what I heard, moved each night to a different room, something like that, anyway….

So those people that comes on the Time magazine, the man of the year, not this ear. Not this ear. The man of the year, the successful man of the year. I don’t know whether every time, every year it comes out or not, but there’s sometimes a man on the Time magazine shows, successful man in the world, of the year. Then there it talks about that person’s, how money he made and all that. But then it describes all this problems, describes all his inner problems, how his life is filled with misery and all that, so much, so full of fear or worry.

So anyway, so all this, so this is what happens without Dharma, without meditation practice in this life, so this is what happens. Without good heart, through developing good heart, compassion, loving kindness, thought of benefiting others, through the Dharma, meditation, so without that this is what happens.

So then people who have achieved a reputation in this world that everybody knows your name, everybody knows who you, everybody has seen your pictures or in the movie, the TV, however, again the same, without Dharma, meditation practice, then there’s so much dissatisfactory mind and so much suffering, so that’s why among the singers, actors, there are many who commit suicide. So there is a reason why many commit suicide, among the educated people, like that, so because of suffering, because of dissatisfaction, because of dissatisfaction, desire, then you create relationship problems, many problems come. Then so much worry, fear, in the life, instead inner happiness, peace, increasing, as the reputation, as you’re famous wider and wider, the inner happiness, peace, should grow, same as the wealth, all this, but it doesn’t happen. More worry, fear, somebody else getting, somebody else becoming more famous or you lose your reputation, worry, fear, of losing your reputation. After you become famous then you have so much worry, fear, to lose, so all these things. So heard, so some friend, might know her, so famous that there’s always anxiety or something, any day something’s going to happen to my reputation, so so much worry, fear, like that.

So anyway, like this, so instead of satisfaction, peace and happiness increasing, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year, instead of increasing, more and more suffering. So that’s their life story. So without Dharma in the life, without meditation in the life, it’s like that.

So the, with good heart, with a warm heart, whenever we’re able to benefit for other sentient beings, whether it’s many sentient beings, in our daily life, even one sentient being able to benefit, so that time the meaning, purpose of life is achieved. In our daily life, whether it’s all sentient beings or some sentient beings or even one sentient being, able to benefit. So now, so by having compassion, by having generated compassion in you, the one person’s heart, then so many sentient beings they don’t receive harm from you, because compassion does not allow to harm others. There’s no harm given to sentient beings from compassion, so, opposite, you stop giving harm to other sentient beings, to numberless sentient beings, so that’s peace and happiness what they receive from you. Then on top of that, then more you develop compassion, you benefit, you do something, besides stop giving harm you actually, also due to compassion you develop wisdom and then cause happiness to other sentient beings, to numberless sentient beings. So therefore, all those happiness, by developing compassion, happiness of this life, they receive happiness of this life from you, happiness of all the coming future lives, they receive from you, from your compassion. Liberation from samsara they receive from you and then great liberation, full enlightenment, they receive from you, the cessation of all the mistakes of the mind and having all the qualities of realization, so they achieve this from you, depend on your compassion, your compassion causes them to achieve full enlightenment. So therefore, so all that is up to, all that is in your hands, whether you want to cause all this happiness to numberless sentient beings, up to enlightenment, it’s in your hands. It’s up to you, it’s up to your mind, what you do with your mind.

So therefore, every one of us has full responsibility of each and every single hell being, hungry ghost, animal, human being, sura, asura, intermediate state beings. Every sentient being’s happiness, up to enlightenment. Every one of us has responsibility. Why? Because if you do not generate compassion towards, you the one person, do not generate compassion to others, then numberless sentient beings, numberless hell beings, hungry ghosts, animals, human beings, suras, asuras, intermediate state beings, numberless sentient beings they don’t receive all this happiness up to enlightenment from you. But if you do generate compassion they receive all this happiness up to enlightenment from you, from your compassion. So therefore, every one of us has full responsibility of all sentient beings’ happiness, including, up to enlightenment. Every one of us has full responsibility of all sentient beings’ happiness up to enlightenment.

Yeah, so we do just short meditation on this universal responsibility, okay. Just keep the mind in this feeling of universal responsibility.

[long pause]

So feel the universal responsibility with every hell being. Maybe start with the human beings…. With every human being, okay, try to feel this. I have responsibility to cause happiness. This life, especially all the happiness of the coming future lives, liberation from samsara, great liberation, full enlightenment, to every hell being.

Because, reason is, if I generate compassion, develop compassion, this happens. I can cause all this happiness to them. If I don’t generate compassion cannot cause all this happiness up to enlightenment, towards the numberless human beings. So that’s the reason why one has responsibility, full responsibility, to cause all this happiness to numberless human beings.

Now try to feel the universal responsibility with every animal. How responsible? Then, same reason. If I generate compassion they receive all this happiness. If I don’t, they don’t receive all this happiness from me.

Now, feel universal responsibility with all the hungry ghosts, using the same reason.

Now, feel the universal responsibility with every, with numberless hell beings. If I develop compassion then also it persuades to develop wisdom, Dharma wisdom, particularly wisdom realizing, the ultimate Dharma wisdom, realizing emptiness, all this. Then, able to liberate from oceans of samsaric suffering, able to reveal the path to them, and able to liberate from the oceans of hungry ghost suffering, oceans of all this suffering of samsara, you’re able to liberate them, able to finish completely or end completely all their suffering and bring to enlightenment. So feel responsible.

Now universal responsibility with every hell being, numberless hell beings, okay. Reasoning, same, why responsibility. By developing compassion then able to develop wisdom, especially ultimate wisdom realizing, directly perceiving emptiness, all that, then able to liberate numberless hell beings from the oceans of suffering of the hell beings. Not only that, the whole entire suffering of samsara, able to liberate them and bring them in full enlightenment by oneself. So therefore, I have full responsibility.

Now feel universal responsibility with the suras. By developing compassion then able to develop wisdom, same, then ultimate wisdom directly perceiving emptiness. Then, with all these qualities of realization then one is able to liberate them from oceans of sufferings of the sura beings, and the whole entire suffering of samsara and bring them to enlightenment. Feel this universal responsibility of all the sura beings.

Now, feel universal responsibility with the asuras, the numberless asuras, each and every single asura being. By developing the great compassion then able to develop wisdom, Dharma wisdom and absolute wisdom realizing, directly perceiving emptiness. Then able to reveal the path to them, liberate them from oceans of asura sufferings and the whole entire suffering of samsara and cause, delusion and karma, and bring to enlightenment.

Now feel universal responsibility with every intermediate state being, by putting the same reason, by developing compassion.

Then, to do this, to be able to do this, to bring them in full enlightenment, to finish all their sufferings, to cease, and to bring them in full enlightenment, then first one need to achieve full enlightenment. One need to be perfect guide, all the qualities, omniscience and perfect power to benefit other sentient beings, to reveal all the methods, and completed mind training in compassion, so forth, all the qualities one needs to be able to do perfect work for sentient beings, then for that, then that doesn’t happen without cause and conditions, so there’s need, that need, one need to actualize the graduated path of the higher capable being. For that then need preliminary realization, graduated path of the middle capable being in general. For that need preliminary, graduated path of the lower capable being in general. So what makes successful all these paths to enlightenment? Guru devotion. From beginning of the path, the perfect human body, the meditation, from there, beginning of the path, there, from there up to enlightenment, to be successful, what makes successful is by the root, guru devotion.

Yeah, then, so at this time, we have received all the necessary conditions to practice Dharma. Have met a virtuous friend revealing the whole path to, not just unmistaken path to happiness, but path to liberation, unmistaken path to liberation, unmistaken path, complete path to enlightenment without missing. So, then, that a perfectly qualified teacher that cannot, rare to find in this world, who can show the complete path without missing. Then, embodiment of Chenrezig, Compassion Buddha, His Holiness. So, not just only one, there are many others, full qualified, met, one has met or one has opportunity to meet. Even one hasn’t met then one has great opportunity to meet. So, perfectly qualified guru, guide, to show you whole path to liberation, enlightenment, who guides you to liberation, to enlightenment.

So, have met Buddhadharma, so have all the necessary conditions to achieve any great meaning, happiness of future lives, then ultimate happiness, any temporary happiness, happiness of future lives, to be born in a pure land of buddha where even you can become enlightened there. So, to achieve perfect human rebirth next life, again one can continue to meditate on the path to liberation, to enlightenment, or to have realization and to benefit other sentient beings, to offer deep benefit to other sentient beings. Then, ultimate happiness, the great meaning of life, ultimate happiness, liberation from samsara, full enlightenment. And one can achieve those even in each second. Not only each day, every hour, minute, in each second one can achieve this, because with this perfect human body one can create the cause of those, even in every second.

During this time that, having this precious human body, that you can achieve any happiness for oneself, can cause any happiness to all sentient beings, so wish-fulfilling this human body like, more precious than the size of this earth, more precious than size of mountain, gold, diamond, more precious than size of this earth, diamond, that this human body is more precious than even the sky filled with billions of dollars, pounds or dollars, filled with gold, diamond, more precious than a wish-granting jewel, the top, the most rare, most precious, incomparable among the material possessions, the wish-granting jewel, that whatever you pray you can get all the material possessions, all the sense enjoyments, by the power of that material. Also, even numberless, even the whole sky filled with wish-granting jewels, like that, this precious human body, especially the perfect human body, which is much more precious than all those wealth, so all those wealth is nothing because, compared to the value of this perfect human body that you have.

So with that much wealth alone, you cannot stop rebirth in the lower realms. With that much wealth, even sky filled with the wish-granting jewels, you cannot achieve, just having that many wealth alone can’t achieve rebirth in the, deva, human rebirth, rebirth of the body of the happy transmigratory being, you can’t achieve. Just having that much wealth, you possess that much wealth, the whole sky filled with the wish-granting jewel, with that alone you can’t achieve liberation from samsara. With that alone you can’t achieve full enlightenment for sentient beings. But without even slightest, even one tiny diamond, the size of wish-granting jewel, without having a wish-granting jewel, even one, even without having one tiny diamond or gold, however, if one has this perfect human rebirth, one can achieve any happiness of future lives and then liberation from samsara, full enlightenment, all this one can achieve, that by practicing Dharma with this. So this human body, especially the perfect human body gives the opportunity to practice Dharma, so then you can achieve all this.

So, for example, Milarepa and so forth, those great yogis who totally renounced life, who had nothing, not even one rupee, who had nothing, not even one penny, but by practicing Dharma, human body to practice Dharma, then achieved enlightenment, even in one life, even in a brief lifetime of degenerated time, within some number of years achieved full enlightenment, completed the whole path. So, like that, so many happened on this earth, who are totally renounced life.

That we are born as naga, who has wish-granting jewel as decoration on the crown, and living life with that or like a market or like the department store, like that, however, with all this wealth, but still not even a human being, just having alone, naga, unable to achieve a human rebirth, unable to be a human being, so animal realm. So we have been those naga kings or naga beings, those nagas, who have all this, like department store, so forth, all the jewels, we have been born like that numberless times. We’re born as wheel-turning king, only one king in one world and like this, global, one king, like this one Buddha descend, show twelve deeds, only one Buddha showing twelve deeds. Two buddhas do not come in one world. I’m not talking about country, world, one continent. Two buddhas do not come showing the twelve deeds, only one, so only one wheel-turning king, so there’s no comparison to other king, so wheel-turning king.

We have been born like that numberless times, had all those wealth. We have been born as a king, deva realm king, Indra, Brahma, even their one ornament, one earring, it’s said that even all the human beings’ wealth and one earring of deva, one earring of deva the value is much more. No comparison, much more valuable, much more worth, even compared to all the human wealth. So even their decorations, even the ornaments what they have, even one ornament, so we have been born like that numberless times. We had all those wealth numberless times but did nothing, nothing helped to liberate from samsara.

So now, this time, then, we don’t have this perfect human body, this precious human body, this perfect human body every day, all the time, not forever. So, death can happen any, not only death’s definite but can happen any day, any hour, any moment. So that time, when the death happens, the consciousness, the continuity of the consciousness doesn’t stop, continues life after this, as there’s continuity of the consciousness from yesterday and today, continuity of consciousness, so can remember yesterday, so we remember from last year, because there’s continuity of consciousness to this year, then from childhood time to now, from, same, from mother’s womb there’s continuity of consciousness now, and then the consciousness life before that, there’s continuity of consciousness before the conception, before consciousness took place on the fertilized egg, there’s a continuity of consciousness that which took birth.

Therefore, death can happen any time, so therefore, must make sure, must make possible, must make sure to not be reborn in the lower realms. Which is the result of negative karma, nonvirtuous actions, motivated by the ignorance, anger, attachment, those, these negative attitudes. So, at the moment, up to now, at the moment even we have been believing, I have been practicing Dharma for many years, even those of us who have been practicing Dharma, who believes, for many years, twenty years or thirty years, however, many years I have been practicing Dharma, even us who believe, but however, that becomes real Dharma, pure Dharma, very few, very little, and mostly become nonvirtue, because the attitude, not only when we do eating, walking, sitting, sleeping, doing job, but even other times when we pray, when we do meditation, the motivation is, if it’s examined, it’s attachment clinging to this life, nonvirtuous thought, which transforms the action, even meditating, doing prayers, many things, which appears spiritual looking but not really become Dharma. So, no question of the rest of the activities, become nonvirtue. So the most attitude that we have is the attachment clinging to this life happiness, so nonvirtue. So the result is rebirth in the lower realms. So therefore, that’s how it is up to now. So now, must make sure that to not reborn in the lower realms and to receive higher rebirth, deva, human rebirth, whenever the death happens.

So, receiving a deva, human body after this life that alone is not sufficient. One must be free from samsara, must be liberated from samsara. So, in this samsara any pleasure, any happiness of samsara, we experienced numberless times, there’s nothing new left, there’s nothing new experience left, happiness, pleasure. We had, we experienced numberless times in the past, any pleasure. Also, any suffering, any problem, any suffering, we experienced numberless times. Nothing is the first time. Whether it’s a problem or whether it’s samsaric pleasure, nothing is first time. We experienced numberless times. Whatever we see, other human beings having pleasure, whatever pleasure we see others having, we had numberless times. All those wealth we had numberless times in the past. It didn’t help anything, it didn’t liberate us from oceans, suffering of samsara, the delusion and karma.

In the samsara, whichever place one go is, wherever one abide is a place for suffering. With whomever one accompany, it’s a friend of suffering. And whatever enjoyment one has, enjoyment of suffering. So, that until we are liberated from samsara it’s all like this. Whatever style of life in samsara, it’s all suffering life.

One lama, Gelek Rimpoche, who lived in Delhi a long time, so he said that, in Delhi the poor people working in the road under a very hot sun, poor people, they bring their mean in the small container from the home and then working very hard under hot sun. So they think, so they’re under hot sun down there, so they look at all these buildings, people living in the house with the fans, with air conditioner, fans, so then they get attracted to those people living in the house with the air conditioner, fans, Oh, how wonderful it would be! How wonderful life! Then those people living in the house with air conditioner and fans, up there, they think, Oh, how wonderful it is to be like those people in the street. Those, so simple, they have no problems, very simple. Because their life is filled with problems, the business people, wealthy, with the relationship problems and business, so many problems, filled, then find attraction to the people sitting outside, sitting, working in the road, those very simple people working, Oh, they have nothing, how wonderful is their life, if I could be like them. So anyway, so in reality that both has, that they have also their own suffering, problems, those poor people. And then those who are living in the house has even bigger problems. Even there’s no physical problems, but there’s so much mental sufferings, worry, fear, dissatisfaction, so many.

So usually when you see, until you speak with them, until you become close with them, then it all looks very nice, a lot of jewelry, decorations, expensive dress, all this, but then when you actually sit down and talk, after five minutes, ten minutes, you talk then you hear their problems. After five minutes, ten minutes, fifteen minutes, then you talk, when you become close then you can hear problems. So then you’re so surprised. Before it looks like there’s no problem but then when you sit down and talk, after five minutes, ten minutes, then comes, then you hear more and more, closer, then you come to find out the life. So, my own experience is, in my own experience meet so many people like this, in the different, in the Chinese society, many different nationalities.

So life is, until we are free from samsara life is like this. So therefore now, we must be free, liberated from samsara, from the whole entire samsara in this life. Then that alone is not sufficient, achieving liberation for oneself, then one must achieve full enlightenment for sentient beings, okay. For that then one need to exchange oneself for others, let go I, cherish others, to achieve full enlightenment, to be able to do perfect works for sentient beings, free them from all the sufferings and bring them to enlightenment, okay.

The Bodhicaryavatara mentioned, [Tibetan] so if one does not exchange oneself for others, [Tibetan] one can’t achieve enlightenment. [Tibetan] Even in the samsara there’s no happiness, you won’t achieve happiness. [Tibetan] Leave aside happiness of future lives, even the happiness of this life won’t be achieved. So if we cherish the I, then even the happiness, even the success of this life, even you won’t have success of this life, happiness.

So much of our problem, even the non-believers, even who doesn’t believe in reincarnation and karma, non-believers, however, it’s the same, so much of the problem is because, even unable to have success of this life, happiness, that’s due to self-cherishing thought.

And then, also great bodhisattva Shantideva mentioned that, As long as you don’t drop the fire, burning cannot be stopped. [Tibetan] So like that, as long as you don’t drop the fire, the burning, your hand burning or the body, cannot be stopped. So like that, as long as you don’t give up the I, the sufferings, you won’t be free from the suffering, you won’t be able to abandon suffering. [Tibetan] So therefore, in order to pacify one’s own suffering, to pacify sufferings of others, who are numberless, in order to pacify the suffering of others, give up oneself for others, cherish others as oneself.

So, here, to pacify sufferings of oneself and pacify sufferings of others, who are numberless, so give up oneself for others, cherish others as oneself. So that means same, to achieve happiness, we have to understand, to achieve happiness for oneself and to cause happiness to all sentient beings, then let go I, which is obstacle to have all the success, including enlightenment for yourself, to cease all the mistakes of the mind, to achieve all the qualities of realization, yourself to achieve that, which is obstacle for that, then obstacle to cause all the happiness to other sentient beings up to enlightenment, so let go the I, cherishing the I becomes the obstacle for all this, so let go I and cherish others, which is opening the door for all the happiness for oneself. Happiness of this life, liberation from samsara, happiness of all the coming future lives, liberation from samsara, enlightenment. Then one is able to cause all the happiness up to enlightenment to sentient beings, so by cherishing others.

So all the happiness comes from bodhicitta, your happiness, every sentient being’s, everyone’s happiness all comes from bodhicitta. So bodhicitta came from great compassion, great compassion is generated by depending on the obscured suffering sentient beings, each and every single obscured suffering sentient being, so by their kindness. The great compassion is generated by depending on the kindness of each, the existence of each obscured suffering sentient being.

Therefore, that also becomes the reason to exchanging oneself for others, to actualize bodhicitta. So basically it means, all the past, numberless past happiness, present happiness, future happiness, everything, including enlightenment, your happiness, past, present, future, all, including enlightenment, everything, so one receives from bodhicitta, so bodhicitta came from great compassion, great compassion is generated depending on the kindness of each and every single hell being, hungry ghost, animal, human being, sura, asura, intermediate state being, every obscured suffering sentient being. So therefore, all your past, present, future, all the happiness received by the kindness of every single hell being, every single hungry ghost, every single animal, every single human being, every single sura, asura, intermediate state being. So every single hell being hungry ghost, animal, human, sura, asura, intermediate state being, every one is the most precious one, most precious, most kind one in one’s own life, most precious, most kind one in one’s own life.

So we should meditate on this. Every, therefore, every hell being, hungry ghost, animal, human being, sura, asura, intermediate state being, everyone’s most precious, most kind one in one’s own life, okay. Because all those past, present, future happiness, everything one receive, every single comfort, enjoyment, past, present, future, all, up to enlightenment one receive by the kindness of every, each and every single hell being, each and every single hungry ghost, one receive by their kindness; each and every single animal, by their kindness one receive...
