Lama Zopa Rinpoche's Online Advice Book
Misfortune

By Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche at various locations (Last Updated Oct 11, 2009)

In this section, Rinpoche emphasizes how good karma can run out, how to create it, and the importance of generosity in improving our material fortunes.

In order not to receive any kind of harm, we need to purify past negative karmas, abstain from committing them again, and create positive merit.

The ultimate solution to prevent people harming others and the world is to change their minds from anger into loving kindness and compassion, and to help them cease their delusions completely. This is also the ultimate solution in order not to have any personal enemies.

Rinpoche shows us how our experiences of misfortune, including natural disasters, come as a result of self-cherishing thoughts, from either attachment or anger, rooted in ignorance. The earthquake is not coming from outside, it is coming from our minds.

Thus, every day, we need to purify past negative karma and try to abstain from creating more.
