Teachings at Maitreya Puja (Audio and Unedited Transcripts)

By Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche
Shakyamuni Center, Taichung, Taiwan (Archive #1611)

Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave these teachings during a Maitreya puja at Shakyamuni Center, Taichung, Taiwan in March 2007. During the teachings Rinpoche gives commentary and oral transmission of the Namgyälma, Stainless Pinnacle and a number of other mantras.

The teaching was being translated into Chinese and while we have edited those sections out you may still occasionally hear the Chinese translator's voice in the background.

History of Maitreya Project

So good afternoon or good evening. So thank you very, very much from the bottom of my heart, participating this Thousand Offering to Maitreya.

I was supposed to attend then I went to beach. The beach, beach. So, I think anyway if I did attend we wouldn’t have finished by now. It might be all night [pause] like the last night Medicine Buddha puja. So anyway, that’s another benefit.

But I can’t say, but since I came down I cannot say what will happen. Since I came down so not sure what will happen.

It is very unpredictable.

[Rinpoche speaks in Tibetan to someone.]

So [pause], but I think I will do my share, my part that missing later Thousand Offerings. [pause]

So besides, so as I have been telling in the past, so the purpose of building the Maitreya Statue that is, my master, Lama Yeshe, who is kinder that all the three time buddhas, he left a will before he passed away, told me that you should build the Maitreya Buddha statue, a very large one, so in the place Bodhgaya. So this is what, he went to meet his family in Tibet and visited to China, in the lay form, that much earlier time, so that time, much earlier time so to be able to succeed what you want to do and to not have obstacles Tibet, so he being disguised, like without robes in Tibet. Because even now, especially for Western people, especially, even now especially Western people wearing robes they get, they don’t like in Tibet, the Mainland Chinese they do not like, especially Western person wears robes because it brings a lot of attraction, makes Tibetan people very, so happy and so excited and so which brings attention. So, I mean generally somebody who comes from outside even Tibetan or Nepali or ?Kopan, but especially Western.

So anyway, so this is very early times, so no question. So anyway went to see his family and then made very big offering in front of the Buddha, the Jhowo, the statue that was built during Buddha’s time. Buddha’s mother misses very much when Buddha was absent, went to Tushita to do three months abiding in summer retreat. So Buddha’s mother misses very much so Buddha called this artist who’s not ordinary being, he’s a transformation, so [pause] so Buddha asked him to make a statue. So then after the statue was made, Buddha put his hand on the statue and blessed, then predicted that this statue will do a lot of benefit in India. Then afterwards, Mongolia, this many number of years it will do a lot of benefit in China, will do this many years of incredible benefit for sentient beings, then it will go to Snowland Tibet and then this many number of years it will do great benefit. Then it will go to naga land, so mentioned naga, but probably it might be under the ocean, maybe something happens again in Tibet then maybe this statue taken in the ocean or something like that. So it seems the nagas they receive at the end, under the, I guess it might be under the ocean.

So this, it appears statue but actually it’s Buddha himself. So this, people from all over the world, from all over Tibet and every day thousands and thousands and thousands line up and go to see, make prayer, make offering. [pause].

So Lama he invited monks from Sera, all the monks from Sera, probably maybe Sera Je, I think, so he made very big offering there, made many, many tsog, I think, and did ______ and then, so Lama told me that maybe before he left or after, said that when he passes away nobody need to do puja for him because he did by himself. Because Lama did this big puja at the temple. So when I go to Tibet, tried in the past two times, invite the monks from Sera Je, I think, then one time there was Geshe Sopa Rinpoche and Geshe Sengye, from whom I received about three months teachings, oral transmissions of the Hayagriva text, three volumes by ?Kalka Jetsun Dampa, who is like His Holiness the Dalai Lama for Mongolia. One of the past lives. The present incarnation is at Dharamsala. That and then the commentary, the path to the Hayagriva, Hayagriva’s path to enlightenment, two volumes by His Holiness, by the Fifth Dalai Lama, so all those, with a few incarnate lamas, _______ Rinpoche and Pari Rinpoche and Keutsang Rinpoche then another Rinpoche from ______ ?khamtsen.

There was one time Bakula Rinpoche, who is the, from the Sixteen Arhats, the one who is holding a mongoose. So, from whom I received the Golden Light Sutra teachings, the oral transmission, the very short one and the middle one. So I took the, received these most precious teachings from Bakula Rinpoche, and so, I think, one or two ?Westerners, and a few other monks. [pause] Maybe Lama’s relative and maybe, and one Lama Gyupa from Gyume Tantric College, who did three-year Guhyasamaja retreat at Dharamsala, Tushita, and then he becomes caretaker of the altars, to make offerings and do different pujas and help fire pujas, things like that.

So one time Geshe Sopa Rinpoche and Geshe Sengye Rinpoche, both they were there. So did two times, I think the puja there, I think Heruka Lama Chöpa tsog puja, the long one. Then other times, I think we just maybe did with Western students, Sanghas, other times didn’t get, I didn’t get to go. We invited the monks, [pause] maybe our Sanghas did or maybe the monastery, the temple monks, I don’t remember, the very last [microphone echoes loudly] The very last one I don’t remember.

So it’s a very holy statue, historical statue that Buddha has already predicted so that every day thousands and thousands of people come to go to see and pray and make offerings. They bring butter, and then there are many butter lamps there, they fill it up. So try to offer each month, I think, the robe to the Buddha, but I’m not sure whether they continued the recent times. In the past every month try to offer. I don’t remember painting gold on the face, so it’s very normal there anybody can sponsor offering gold and painting. So anyway, to continue that and also offering the special days of Buddha then every fifteenth offer robes also the Buddha statue in Bodhgaya. So that has been happening, at Root Institute, asked Root Institute to do that, so offer more expensive, more special cloth to the Buddha. So this has been happening. [pause]

So Lama went to Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in Tibet, Panchen Rinpoche’s monastery, so there is a four-story Maitreya Buddha statue, so after I think Lama got this idea, large Maitreya Buddha statue, after seeing that. Then came to Nepal, came back to, so then Lama had this idea. So when he passed away left this will.

So before it was going to be in Bodhgaya then because the UP Government, because there was some small piece of land that belonged to the government so ?who couldn’t make a ?promise or ?whatever, so the Governor of Bihar didn’t give us permit to and to use the land for five years. So then we were trying to act as if the statue is going to move to another place. So the, another area near Bodhgaya they showed much interest so they trying to offer land.

So however then during that time UP Government, when the very large statue in Afghanistan, probably maybe that’s the largest one in the world, I think, when that was destroyed, then there was another small one, both of them were destroyed by bombs by the extremist Muslims they bombed. So it seems in that area there has been Buddhism in the past, maybe also even Kalachakra initiation there in ancient time maybe by Buddha. It seems there was in the old books it was written that the Kalachakra happened there. So that area where there was a Buddha, two statues of Buddha, two large statues, it seems still, but it has been, I think the area people have been Buddhist for a long time and I heard there are still, there are 2,000 people who are Buddhists but that they don’t have, because Muslim countries so strict other religions, other ?Buddhist place to come. So, I think these people, I think, guideless, there’s nobody come there to explain Dharma or nothing, but I have heard there’s 2,000 Buddhists. That could have been some time ago.

So because of that, the two large statues were destroyed so the UP Government wanted to build the same statue in UP, same height, so the very ?start, so they heard we were looking for a place to build a Maitreya statue, the large, 500 feet. So they wrote to His Holiness for interview but they didn’t get. So then they tried a second time then they got. Then they told us they were going to build a road and so much, they have all these lakhs of, many lakhs of rupees to spend.

So His Holiness was very inspired by them, then His Holiness told me that why not build UP. So then I said, anyway, it’s up to His Holiness wherever he wishes, that Lama’s idea to build Bodhgaya.

So then His Holiness said we ask, His Holiness mentioned also, what about build Buddha instead of Maitreya Buddha. Then, so I said it’s up to His Holiness, whatever is more beneficial, then Lama said the Maitreya Statue, the teachings to last a long time. So then His Holiness said, we will go and ask our boss. So it means, His Holiness was in Bodhgaya, the Tibetan monastery temple, so His Holiness was pointing towards the stupa, because the stupa inside there is a Buddha statue, very special.

There was one Buddha statue before at nighttime even there was no light but there is a light coming from that statue, it’s glowing, even there is no light, no candle, no light, but the room where Buddha was, that statue was, it’s glowing, there’s light. But that was destroyed, I think three times attacked from Muslims. The bodhi tree was cut three times. But the root was down there so it grew three times. So, again and again so grew after each time they cut. So the statue was destroyed, one of those times, there was three attacks by Muslims ?to Buddhists in India.

So this statue was made after but still this is very special, so that all over the world people, including His Holiness, all the holy beings, everyone go to pray. So His Holiness said, We will ask our boss, means the Buddha statue, ask Buddha, you see.

So, His Holiness came to, came and then to do sojong in the morning near the stupa. So then His Holiness took the opportunity before the sojong then to go inside the temple and then there was the Ganden Tripa, regent of Lama Tsongkhapa, was invited there. So did divination, there’s a golden lamp offered by His Holiness, then by holding my hand, His Holiness lit the light and then did prayer and then did observation. The observation is, the traditional observation, one way of doing observation, so you write the questions on the paper, same size paper, then you roll and put in dough, flour dough, like size of a chocolate, the big chocolate, round one, so big. So then, when His Holiness like that they do very important decisions so then they measure on the, what do you call this one?

[Ven. Sarah: Scales.]

Scale. So they roll then they scale, make sure they’re exactly the same. Otherwise, if one is a little bit more heavy then there is a problem, the wrong answer might come out, so you measure everything exact when they do that. Then did rolling.

So the first question was that whether to build a Maitreya Statue or Buddha, or Shakyamuni Buddha statue. So then it comes out Maitreya Buddha statue. So asking question to the Buddha, so to give answer, advice. So, Maitreya Buddha came out. Then the next one is where to build, UP or Bodhgaya. UP, maybe there’s, I’m not sure, maybe there’s one other place near Bodhgaya, then UP, then came out UP. So the answer came from Buddha, so that’s how it got decided. So the UP government was so eager.

So anyway, there have been obstacles and of course you need, of course to start the project you need, it’s not just a few million dollars project, it’s not just that, [pause] it’s something about, not only the statue, inside, many temples inside, and then in the throne, the first, there’s 100,000 Maitreya Buddha statues, I think 100,000 or one hundred million, I’m not sure, one hundred thousand. Then there are three levels, within the throne there are three levels, then up there, there is the buddha statues of the thousand eons, fortunate, 1000 of the fortunate eon, 1000 buddhas. Guru Shakyamuni Buddha statute, then on top there’s the Prajnaparamita, Mother Prajnaparamita, advised, the Shakyamuni Buddha statue, that’s advised by Kyabje ?Trulshik Rinpoche. Then on top, the mother Prajnaparamita statue, that was advised by Chogye Trichen Rinpoche, who recently passed away, the head of the Sakya and His Holiness Sakya Trizin’s guru and ?my guru.

Anyway, there are so many temples. Not just the statue itself but within the statues so many temples. Twenty-one Taras’ temple, Sixteen Arhats temple, then the 1000 statue of Lama Tsongkhapa temple, Lama Yeshe’s statue, Lama’s statue, so, one thousand and Thirty-five Buddhas, then many, many temples.

Then outside, Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s past life bodhisattvas’ life, some of those stories, how Buddha made the charity of his body, his wealth, family, all that, practiced morality, patience, perseverance. ?Build with the stories so that people.

Then outside of that, twelve deeds of Buddha, twelve holy deeds of Buddha. So that people to realize this, conclusion to realize the, [pause] the true suffering, because [pause] then as there’s aversion to suffering then from where it came then there’s the true cause of suffering. Then whether it can be ceased or not, then there’s cessation of the suffering, then whether it can be achieved or not, then true path. So people to realize, tourist people come, from these twelve deeds. So there are three circumambulation ?to Maitreya Buddha. Close to Maitreya statue, at the feet. Then after the Buddha’s life story, one middle circumambulation. Then there’s the twelve deeds outside of that, then there’s the third, the circumambulation ______. So there can be also fifth, I mean there can be also fourth circumambulation outside, seems there’s a train, the idea is a small train, then children or people can circumambulate by going in train round. That’s also part of the visualization. So in Buddha’s past-life bodhisattva stories, so the tourists come from all over the world, then by seeing these Buddha’s life stories, at the end, to get understanding that now, Buddha sacrificed his life for so many eons to others, so now my life, I should make my life useful, I should do something for others, so to get some thought of benefiting others, bodhicitta, to get something, to rise positive mind in their hearts, when the tourists come there, so that was the end of this, conclusion, seeing Buddha’s life story.

So however, so it’s not just a few million dollar project. I think we have mentioned two hundred million, maybe I think in the brochure, but I think maybe about three hundred million. However, [pause] so there’s, need to get permission to get the money from outside and also the, when we actually do the work and also the, there’s some problem with the people, the farmers, so the, anyway hopefully can be solved soon. [pause]

So the recent idea is that while that is taking time, the big one, then Bodhgaya also to build a small one, that was the idea, so something happens, gets actualized. So however, so hopefully then everything will get resolved and actualized quickly.

So not only that, then the other, there are quite a number of other places, projects, plans to build a Maitreya statue, in different parts of the world. So two-story one in Tibet, maybe it’s going to be made in Nepal in bronze then bring in Tibet, this most holy place, this is one of the Heruka, most precious holy place, combines holy body, holy speech, holy mind of Heruka, Sipri. So that I think start soon that one, so that might help also success of the large statues. And then also Delhi, also I requested to build same size of statue that we had made from computer from Salt Lake, that was, that which is in Bodhgaya. So one monk, Sera Je monk, but he died by car accident, so to build for his purification, because he requested that and also for Kyabje Bakula Rinpoche memory. But then seems that place was taken by Indian Government, so I think it seems ?didn’t ?exist. So the Mongolia, in the center of Mongolia perhaps maybe fifteen-story Maitreya statue there. Then maybe nine-story Lama Tsongkhapa, in Ulaan Bataar, on the mountain, which I have already announced in the front of the leaders of Mongolia, on the special day of Buddha, announced to them that going to build this, Lama Tsongkhapa statue.

So now the conclusion is so, the Buddha’s teaching to last a long time on this earth that was Lama’s wishes, holy wishes, reason to build, and then the, anyway, what is said in the text is that, so then, if you don’t become enlightened during Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s time then, however, everyone who contributed, any finance, any amount one contributed and ?merit, even one rupee or one what? What do you call Taiwanese? One ?kuai chien and one rupee, so anyone, anybody who contributed any amount so then is making this statue, the Maitreya Buddha, even who contributed one rupee that is making this statue. Then anybody who give their time, not money but time working for or helping for that, giving time, then all those who did planning, and then all the laborers, all the workers, all those thousands and thousands of workers, those who are building, doing transportation, so everybody so all these so many people, so bigger it is, more sentient beings collect merit by donating and then working, building, so purify their negative karma, collect extensive merits. So they create the cause to actualize the path, to transform their mind into the path, through purification, purifying negative karma, obstacles, collecting, necessary condition, collecting merits, so then they are able to transform their mind into the path, able to actualize path, only then. Then actualize bodhicitta, realize emptiness, so forth, then the realization of tantric stages, achieve enlightenment. So anyway, so unbelievable, unbelievable benefits to so many people, bigger it is, so many get the opportunity to purify, collect merit and to have realization.

So now, so they all have this, create the cause or preparation when Maitreya Buddha descends in this world, after Buddha’s teaching stops, then to be the first disciple of Maitreya Buddha and receive teachings from Maitreya Buddha directly and receive prediction for enlightenment during that time.

The other, the third benefit, the third or fourth benefit is that after Buddha’s teachings stopped, before Maitreya Buddha descends in this world, there is eons of unbelievable suffering, eons of weapons, war, much more than what happened before, whole entire world, the whole entire world suffer with war and with danger of weapon. Before just some parts of the world, some countries but not this is all over the world. There is an eon like this, then there is eons of famine. So the whole world suffers famine, so then the whole world suffers sicknesses, so then much more than what happened before, much more than what happened in the past, so everywhere, dying, all over the world, so much sickness.

So making Maitreya Buddha statue it helps to shorten, it helps to become shorter, shorten the duration of all this, the eon of weapons, the eon of famine, the eon of sicknesses, all that. How many more Maitreya statues built it becomes shorter and shorter. So in Ladakh, there’s Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo, I don’t know how many hundred years ago, who translated the, [pause] there is a secret mantra, Vajrayana, Nyingma and Sarma, nyingma is old and sarma is new. So since Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo translated into Tibetan language, so then I think then this is called sarma. So anyway he wrote, I heard that he wrote on a rock in Ladakh, there’s a Maitreya, I think it must be a Maitreya Buddha appeared from the rock, I’m not sure, then there’s written, carved under this, saying this, the benefits of making Maitreya Buddha statue that helps to reduce the duration of, become shorter these eons of weapons, then sicknesses or famine, these things. The great translator-lama, the scholar, the great holy being, Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo. So, there are these particular benefits, which doesn’t have that story the other statues.

So, after I heard this story then I thought to build maybe one thousand, not tsa-tsa, small ones, Maitreya Buddha but like one story, two story, above one story. However, large ones, different parts of the world.

So, I deeply appreciate that, all your prayers, even though I was, even though I was absent here but all your prayer and practice for actualizing the project, okay.

So Sophia asked to give the oral transmission of the animal liberating, the prayer, the mantra, so I thought the very important one is the five powerful mantras, so I thought to do the lung of that. But there’s so much benefit to be explained, so what I’ll do is I’ll give the lung of, from the Kangyur, the whole text talking about the benefits of the Stainless Pinnacle Deity’s mantra and then maybe explain some from that, and then eventually to translate the whole text, then people understand how this mantra is unbelievable, unbelievable, most precious, how most precious thing this to recite. So can get the whole idea the evolution of that.

So tonight just some from that, some benefit, then do the lung of the whole entire text, which I received recently from, I may have received from Kyabje Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche but don’t remember a hundred percent. I took many lungs. Then recently I took from Kyongla Rato Rinpoche, so in San Jose. So that’s clear, I have written down my list, in my book there’s a list of the lungs, oral transmissions, initiations, things like that. So yeah, so anyway, since I have the lineage, so the purpose of that is to preserve and to spread to others, to give others, so I think do the lung of that. [pause] Then this way you receive the blessings so there’s more power when you chant the mantra, when you chant for others. [pause]

[Rinpoche speaks in Tibetan to attendant.]

[Rinpoche recites short mandala then refuge and bodhicitta.]

[Rinpoche chants preliminary prayer in Tibetan]

At any rate….

[Rinpoche talks privately with someone]

At any rare, so the purpose of my life is to benefit for sentient beings and to free them from all the suffering and causes and bring to enlightenment and for the success of that then first I must myself achieve full enlightenment. So no matter how long it takes time, no matter how difficult it is, no matter how long it takes time, must do it. So therefore I need to actualize the path. Then for that I need to purify defilement and collect extensive merits, so then for this purpose then doing the recitation of mantra, also then to liberate other sentient beings from their negative karma and defilements, and cause them to actualize the path and bring to enlightenment. Therefore, I’m going to take the oral transmission of mantra.

So also when we do, take the oral transmission that is same, also like I mentioned last night, then the, before the Medicine Buddha practice I mentioned, then think all the sentient beings in your heart, all the hell beings there, all the hell beings in regards, instead of I, my happiness then the sentient beings in your heart. The hell beings, hungry ghosts, animals, numberless animals, numberless hell beings, numberless hungry ghosts, numberless human beings, suras, asuras. Not only the six realms’ sentient beings of this universe, not only that, numberless universes, to free them from all the suffering and causes and bring to enlightenment. That’s the object, that’s the goal, that’s the project what we ?accomplish. That’s the purpose of our life. So obtaining happiness for them is the purpose of our living, surviving and anything whatever we do, whether we chant mantra or whether we study Dharma or doing job, should be all the same, only this one goal, only this one goal that’s to free the sentient beings from the oceans of samsaric suffering and causes and bring them, cause them happiness, bring to enlightenment.

[Translation into Chinese, while Rinpoche asks ?Ven. Sophia in the background: The lung of the mantra or the whole prayer? The lung, the whole prayer or just the mantra? The mantra.]

So the first mantra here, Avalokiteshvara, the Chenrezig, the six syllables, the mantra which is fulfilling all the wishes, fulfilling all the wishes of yourself and then you fulfill the wishes of numberless hell beings, hungry ghost, animals, human being, suras, asuras, intermediate stage beings, everyone.

Because this is the benefit what you get from the mantra, by reciting this mantra, doing meditation, so you fulfill all your wishes for happiness, all the temporary and ultimate, liberation from samsara, full enlightenment, okay. Then with that what you can do, what you are able to by generating compassion the meaning of the heart, the meaning of this mantra, the purpose of this, the special purpose of this mantra then because of compassion then also you are able to, compassion ?drives to develop wisdom, the path, method and wisdom, to enlightenment. Then however, then you are able to fulfill the wishes by completing the path. And then you are able to benefit all sentient beings even before generating the path, during the path and then to [a few words missed] then after you achieve enlightenment, then you are able to do perfect work towards all the sentient beings, without slightest mistakes, okay.

Then mantra recite, then of course, ?liberating yourself and all sentient beings from suffering and causes and then cause all the happiness from that, temporary and ultimate, liberation from samsara, full enlightenment, okay.

[Rinpoche gives oral transmission of mani and long Chenrezig mantra.]

The very long one I did during the, yeah, some time ago. Maybe doesn’t need to do again.

So the Chenrezig, whether you recite the very long one, the dharani or the eleven-face NAMO RATNA TRAYAYA… or OM MANI PADME HUM, however, it’s for everything but fulfilling all the wishes, yours and other sentient beings, but particular thing is to develop compassion towards all sentient beings, towards each and every sentient being including your, including the enemy whom you hate or who hate you. So if there is compassion then there is, if there is compassion in your heart then there is, to any sentient being, for example, the person whom you hate or whom you don’t like or who don’t like you, if you don’t have compassion for that person there’s no enlightenment. There is no enlightenment, there is no bodhicitta, there’s no five paths, five Mahayana paths to enlightenment. There is no ten bhumis, the ten grounds, ten bhumis. Then all that doesn’t happen. So the liberating from the disturbing-thought obscuration, subtle obscuration, doesn’t happen, so the completing the quality of cessation, completing the quality of realization doesn’t happen. So can’t achieve two kayas, can’t do perfect work for sentient beings, without the slightest mistake, to bring every single sentient being to enlightenment, that doesn’t happen if you don’t have compassion to your enemy, if you don’t have compassion to one sentient being, if you don’t have compassion to your enemy, whom you call enemy. If you have compassion to your enemy then there is, then you can have bodhicitta realization, then you can enter the Mahayana path, then all the five paths, ten bhumis, all that then the Paramitayana path then also tantric path, complete then can achieve qualities of cessation, qualities of realizations, two kayas, then able to do perfect work, able to enlighten each and every single sentient beings, so which is our main goal of our life, purpose of life, that one, to enlighten each and every single sentient being, okay.

So you can see now how compassion is so important, how compassion is, that’s the very heart of our life, the very purpose of our life, our compassion towards sentient beings.

So compassion is not only for people who practice Dharma, compassion is not only for people who meditate or practice Dharma. You need compassion in business, in business life. In business life if you don’t have compassion then you cheat other sentient beings and then, you kill others, you harm others. Then you kill you cheat, you tell lies to others, that becomes the obstacle to your happiness, that becomes obstacle for your success of your business. To achieve happiness now and in the future, including ultimate happiness, liberation, enlightenment, so the harm to others. [pause] So, to [pause] so now by doing business, even you have achieved all the wealth but if you don’t have compassion you won’t have happiness. You have wealth but you have, you have external wealth obtained, but you don’t have peace and happiness in your heart. So then you don’t enjoy life. Then your life is suffering, your life suffers, with ego, with self-cherishing thought. So therefore, you need compassion. Therefore, without compassion your heart is empty, your life is empty, no matter how much wealth there is, billions and zillions of dollars but you don’t have happiness, you don’t have happiness and peace in your heart, besides no satisfaction, no fulfillment. So therefore, from compassion you will have, you do something good for others, you benefit others, you help others, your life, your body, speech and mind you make beneficial to others, good use for others. Your wealth benefiting others, whatever wealth you have beneficial for others. So then it brings so much fulfillment in your heart, a very satisfied life, very fulfilling.

So compassion need, even you’re a doctor, even you’re doing doctor, a medical doctor you need compassion. If you don’t have compassion you’re going to harm the patients if you don’t care the patients and if you don’t care the patients, their life, their happiness, so then it can be very dangerous. Even a nurse’s life you need compassion.

Even family life, even with taking care of family or working in the family need compassion. Otherwise selfish mind, then with that you only seek your happiness, what you do is only for your happiness. So then you don’t get along with others in the family, then there is an ego crash, then you don’t get along and always fight, quarrel. So if there is no compassion between a husband, if there is no compassion in the life of a couple, husband and wife, there’s no compassion then same what I mentioned the problem, always fight and quarrel and then because of ego, looking only your, seeking only your own happiness, not cherishing the other sentient being. The others sentient beings need happiness, not thinking that, then life is not happy. Even physically they live together, however, but how many years they live, how long they live but there’s no happiness. There’s no harmonious, so can’t enjoy the life again, even though physically living together but can’t enjoy the life, there’s no peace and happiness. So every, so whatever in the life.

In the teacher’s life you need compassion, otherwise a problem, so much problem. Then ego, if you live with ego, self-cherishing thought, there’s no happiness, so much problem, so much worry, fear, because of the ego, self-cherishing thought. And then you need compassion in the life of a student, in the life of student there is need of compassion. If you have compassion then your education becomes meaningful, how much you learn you benefit to other beings, you benefit for other sentient beings, in the life of students.

So the organizers, employees, employers, they need compassion, otherwise, same. Then so much problems, dissatisfaction, all that. Then the employee, people who are doing work, employee, doing, then also need compassion. If they don’t have compassion then again so much problem.

So then ego, self-cherishing thought become obstacle for this life happiness, obstacle for success of this life happiness. Success of this life happiness, you need to have the, if you care of others, if you cherish others, if you care others, others’ needs, others’ happiness, if you cherish others, then constantly make others happy, you do what others want. So then constantly makes others happy then your job successful, your job or whatever, yeah, all the, so forth, everything becomes long-lasting, successful, other people happy, then when other people are happy, you’re happy.

So generally, yeah, so even in the army, even in the military, even in the military work you need compassion. Even in the life of military you need compassion. So if there’s compassion then makes life, makes most meaningful life, then things will, then things what you are doing become virtue, become cause of enlightenment. If there’s compassion in your heart your actions become virtue because you do for others, for the benefit of others.

So if there is no compassion then your motivation is ego, self-cherishing thought, then also the attachment clinging to this life, then the actions done with that, actions with the body, speech and mind done with that, it harms others. Not only harms others, it harms to yourself. So your life becomes harmful to yourself, so not only others, besides others. So any aspect of life one live needs compassion. Even somebody who is living butcher, I mean, even somebody who is living prostitute, even in that life they need compassion. So compassion, if there is compassion, cherish others, compassion, seeking happiness of others, there is no ego, self-centered mind, so everything is giving, from the heart giving to others. So the compassion, then here also, same, then become virtue, like the bodhisattvas. The bodhisattvas or the enlightened beings by manifesting in various forms, sentient beings who are suffering, who are crazy of attachment, desire, so forth, in order to tame them.

So therefore the, [pause] so compassion is not just only those have faith to Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, not only who are Buddhist, not only who seek enlightenment, not only that. Everyone need compassion, whatever different style of the life, that’s the best life. Whatever different style of the life but if you have compassion then the life is totally transformed, [pause] like gold [pause]. Before it’s like kaka or before the life was like kaka, kaka, okay. The poopoo, kaka before then now it is transformed into gold, okay. [pause] So before just ego, self-cherishing thought, now compassion, so big difference, makes the life, huge, like between sky and earth, okay.

So therefore need to recite OM MANI PADME HUM to develop compassion is THE utmost need. So normally I say, even the mosquitoes, they need to recite OM MANI PADME HUM. Crocodiles need to recite OM MANI PADME HUM. Elephants need to recite OM MANI PADME HUM. Anyway this smallest, even the ants they need to recite OM MANI PADME HUM. Elephant, the largest animal, the whale, what’s it called, in the water, they need to recite OM MANI PADME HUM, but they can’t [pause] they can’t because they don’t have a human body. They are unable to recite, they can’t, but they should, but they can’t. So we can because we have a human body, able to express, communicate, okay. So therefore it’s great loss so if you don’t get to chant OM MANI PADME HUM, so that should be the most important and fundamental practice everyday life. That and Medicine Buddha, these two, so this is what normally I advise anybody who is interested to practice, to do something, anyway, generally anybody who seek happiness, who want happiness they should recite, OM MANI PADME HUM and Medicine Buddha, anybody who want happiness. So that’s why I am saying even the animals, the ants, ants, monkeys they should recite OM MANI PADME HUM, this Buddha mantra. Monkeys, but they can’t. Okay.
