Serving the Guru and the Purpose of Guru Devotion

So, there’s two things: correctly devoting to the virtuous friend with thought, so looking at it buddha, seeing that person who is your guide to enlightenment, buddha, by looking, from your side by looking at it buddha. So that, correctly devoting with the mind.

So, along with the that then correctly devoting with the action. So that is, obtaining the advice of the guru, along with that then obtaining the advice of the guru, then [Tibetan] whatever the service, the activities, [Rinpoche loses voice, has a drink] whatever activity the help, they need, service, cleaning or whatever, there are many different services to do, so not necessarily that you have to be with the guru, that doing activities for the guru, according to the wish of the guru, for the guru. So, this, whether you’re doing something by yourself, activities, or with a group of people, like a Center or group of people doing service, or you’re individually oneself doing activities for the guru. Service doesn’t mean only physically with the guru, not necessary.

Then respect, things like that. In the Fifty Verses of Guru Devotion there’s mentioned, so those respect there explained. So create, because very, most powerful object so therefore, you create unbelievable merits and incredible purification.

Then the last one, if one does have material to offer, then one offer to collect the merit. But that’s not the, like Milarepa said, [Tibetan] The offering to the guru is paid by realization, practice.

Among these three things the most important one is obtaining the advice of the guru, that’s the most important one. Among those three that’s the first one.

And also, the reason to look at it buddha from side of the disciple, because then that is, so if you have that devotion seeing buddha then there’s no difficulties at all. No matter how hardship it is, no matter how difficult it is, but for you who has devotion seeing buddha by looking at it, no difficulties at all. So easy to do. It’s incredible, unbelievable enjoyable, so it’s, you see the, it’s incredible, unbelievable purification and unbelievable joy, bliss, incredible joy. And you see you’re making your life unbelievable meaningful, the quickest way to achieve enlightenment. Like bodhisattva Taktungu, bodhisattva Always Crying One, didn’t, without practicing tantra that quick path to enlightenment, so but he sacrificed, he cherished the guru more than his own life and offered service.

So, before he sees the guru, bodhisattva Taktungu, no, bodhisattva, sorry bodhisattva Chöpa. So, not Taktungu, sorry, wrong name. So before he saw his guru, Chöpa, for seven years or something he circumambulated the temple where bodhisattva Chöpa is in retreat at that temple. Outside cleaning, offer service like this.

Then the day when, he requested for teachings, the day, teachings on the Prajnaparamita, so the day when bodhisattva Chöpa was going to come out to give teachings, then he put a throne on the ground. There was no, the maras they blessed the, they interfered, the made the water to dry, so there was no water to clean the ground, to sprinkle over the ground so the dust to not rise. So he put, he took out the blood and sprinkled on the ground, to not rise doubt…. Doubt! To not rise dust. So anyway, maybe doubt anyway.

So he cherished his guru Chöpa more than his life. So because of that, the three countless great merits you have to collect in order to achieve enlightenment in the Paramitayana path, so the one countless great merit he finished within seven years. He was able to complete within seven years, even without practicing tantra. So, that’s because of the power of the, because the guru is the most powerful object.

So, to be able to obtain, able to accomplish the advice, so the mind training, the developing devotion by looking, seeing buddha by looking at it buddha, all the reasonings, quotations, so that is able to obtain the advice, all the advice to be obtained, accomplished. So then if we’re able to accomplish then that ?way able to achieve enlightenment, that’s what makes you able to achieve enlightenment. So with that guru, devotional thought that you don’t create obstacles for your realization, the anger or heresy, all the negative thoughts rising to the guru, so it stops. So you don’t create, so those negative thoughts to the guru is the heaviest obstacle for realization, so that, what delays most, longest, to have realization and destroys the merits that many eons, how many seconds then that many eons’ merits get destroyed, merit collected, that many eons the realization gets delayed, how many seconds got heresy, anger, so all that. So you’re protected well, with this devotion you’re protected well from all those negative thoughts and negative karma collected with the guru. So then you receive blessing of the guru in the heart and then, able to obtain all the advices. Then as much as you ______, able to achieve realization. Then that much quicker able to achieve enlightenment, and then here the main objective, main goal, so that you’re able to liberate quicker, you’re able to liberate and liberate quicker the numberless sentient beings from the suffering, oceans of samsaric suffering, and bring to enlightenment. So that’s the main objective, main focus, main objective, main aim of this practice. Why this guru devotion practice, why, so that is if you want, if one’s wish is to liberate the sentient beings from the oceans of samsaric suffering and bring to enlightenment. This, to be able to do perfect work for sentient beings, so that, for the success of that, then you need to achieve enlightenment, you need to actualize the whole path, so for the success of the whole path to enlightenment, the root, guru devotion. So one has to understand that the whole purpose is to benefit, to be able to benefit others. The purpose of guru devotion is if you want, to be able to benefit for other sentient beings. That benefit is not just giving medicine or shelter, build shelter, or food, not just that. It’s bringing, it’s liberating them from the oceans of samsaric, by liberating from delusions and karma, the cause of all the sufferings and defilements and bring them to full enlightenment. So to achieve this biggest aim, this biggest success in the life, like skies of gold. So the purpose, guru devotion , the purpose is, why, the purpose is like limitless sky, the purpose, why the need, like limitless skies.

Due to the three-time merits, past, present, future merits collected by oneself, three-time merits collected by others, may the bodhicitta be actualized within one’s heart and in the hearts of all one’s own family members, all the students here at Tara House, as well all the, here the organizers and all the rest of the students in this organization, the FPMT, and all the supporters, benefactors, and those who give up their life to the organization, sacrifice their life to the organization, doing service to sentient beings, teaching of Buddha, in all their hearts, as well as in the hearts of all the sentient beings without delay even a second.

May the bodhicitta be generated without delay even a second in the hearts of all the leaders of the world, so all the millions in these countries so they will have so much peace and happiness if their led in the correct path of happiness.

May the bodhicitta be generated in the hearts of all the terrorists, in their minds, anyone who has harmful thoughts to others, to harm others. May the bodhicitta be generated in all their hearts with delay even a second. And there’s emergency to pray, to generate good heart, particularly in all their, those people’s hearts. So three-time merits collected by us, by oneself, and by others, to happen, dedicate like this.

Then all this incredible opportunity we have to practice Dharma, to learn Dharma, every day to make the life meaningful, to achieve happiness of future lives, liberation from samsara, to achieve full enlightenment, and to be able to enlighten all sentient beings, all this by the, one object of refuge, sole object of refuge, us all sentient beings, and the source of all the happiness of us, all sentient beings, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, so to have stable life, all the holy wishes to be succeed immediately.

And then, ?heart founder of the organization, then Lama Yeshe, who’s kinder than all the three-time buddhas, all Lama’s holy wishes, whatever he had, to be actualized everything exactly. Then Lama Ösel Rinpoche to have stable life and to benefit sentient beings like Lama Tsongkhapa.

Due to all the three-time merits collected by me, collected by others, may I, then pray like this, able to offer limitless skies of benefit to the sentient beings, teaching of Buddha, like Lama Tsongkhapa, by having the same quality within me as Lama Tsongkhapa has, from now on in all the lifetimes, in every second to be like that, like Lama Tsongkhapa.

Due to all the past, present, future merits collected by oneself, the three-time merits collected by others, so please dedicate, everyone please dedicate the merits, then the, may all the fundings be completed, by received, without delay even a second, that 500-feet Maitreya statue to be constructed, completed and continue to abide in this world until Maitreya Buddha descends. Then may it cause to, numberless sentient beings to collect extensive merit, purify defilements, negative karma, and then actualize bodhicitta in their hearts, then bring perfect peace and happiness in this world and to bring, sentient beings to bring to enlightenment as quick as possible.

Then, as well as the projects in Tibet to be actualized as quickest possible, to help the Buddhadharma to spread all over the world and to exist, to last a long time in this world and in Tibet. And offering service to the monasteries in this world, the main place of learning the whole entire Buddhadharma, the extensive and depth, those, and then all offering service to Sangha, especially Sangha, also the Sangha in the organization, building monasteries in different parts of the world, preserve Dharma spread Dharma for sentient beings. And to do social services, not only in Tibet, but all the different parts of the world, Mongolia, and in many different parts of the world, India and Nepal and the West. And all those social services, may it cause to generate compassion in all their hearts, who receive the service, so that’s the most important achievement. And then, build various holy objects in different parts of the world and then quickly, to enlighten quickest way sentient beings, easiest way, quickest way to enlighten sentient beings, and free them from suffering and to bring to enlightenment, easiest, quickest way.

Then all the Centers, including Tara House, here, then to be most beneficial for all sentient beings, cause to find faith in refuge and karma in the hearts of sentient beings, actualize bodhicitta in all their hearts, and all their wishes get fulfilled, with bodhicitta, whatever wish they have to be fulfilled and bring the sentient beings to enlightenment, that particularly then by spreading the complete teaching of Lama Tsongkhapa in the hearts of all the sentient beings by receiving all the needs, facilities, all the needs to offer great benefit to others, by receiving all the needs. So here same, Tara House, all the rest. May anybody who comes to Tara House, who comes to learn Dharma, any sentient beings, even insects or even spirits, any being who comes at the Center, the minute when they step on the place of the Center, may their negative karma immediately get purified, and never every get reborn in the lower realms, and may they be able to actualize bodhicitta immediately and may it become healing also, their problems, whatever they have, immediately get solved, whatever emotional problems, whatever they have and then sicknesses immediately get healed and then, cause them to achieve enlightenment as quick as possible.

Due to all the past, present, future merits collected by me, three-time merits collected by others, which are empty, that which are empty, may the I, who is empty, achieve Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s enlightenment, that which is empty, lead all the sentient beings, who are empty, who exist but are empty, to the Guru Shakyamuni Buddha’s enlightenment, which exists but which is empty, by myself alone, who exists but who is empty.

Then, in particular, Lama Tsongkhapa’s teaching, may it be spread in all the directions and may it flourish forever in this world, by completely actualizing within one’s own heart, one’s own family members, in the hearts of all the students in this organization, in the hearts of all the benefactors, in the hearts of all those who sacrifice their life to the organization, doing service to sentient beings and the teaching of Buddha, and in the hearts of everyone in this world.
