Day 9: The Death Process, Understanding Reincarnation

So anyway coming back to Lama, I don't know which course, which meditation course, so Lama gave Bodhisattva Vow, his last teaching was Bodhisattva Vow, I was there at that time. That night, Lama took the aspect vomited, took some canned food, I was eating canned food, the cherry from Indian canned food, I had some I think, I may have advertised to Lama. Like on TV people eat, show how they enjoy so much, so I may have advertised, so Lama ate. Anyway that evening, so then start to vomit, start, then took aspect, then next day went to Delhi, I think Lama was in hospital for one week or something then found a farm house in Delhi and stayed there. So every evening I was doing puja there is a very powerful puja one Dharma protector called Kalarupa, that is the protector to realise impermance and death, might be also emptiness. So there is, you have to, it is wrathful… there are four actions; pacifying, increasing, controlling wrathful. So the puja tantric meditations there are different activities you can do that, depending what is needed for the success. So the puja is wrathful, it involves hooking the beings who harm the sentient beings and who harm the holy beings; evil beings who harm many sentient beings who harm the holy beings so you hook those evil beings...

[tape change]

...because that involves concentration, then Lama said he didn't want to do because every time you concentrate the heart stops. His concentration was very intensive, not like our concentration, it's something very deep, very stable and very deep concentration, so it seems during that time the heart doesn't function. Maybe, during, when a person does very deep meditation, clear light, the extremely subtle gross mind absorbed, manifest only extremely…mind is gross, subtle and extremely subtle, so actually…

(Rinpoche confers) The death process meditation was done? That meditation is very good. Normally that kind of meditation is not done in lam-rim, that subject doesn't come in lam-rim course, that is part of tantra, it comes in tantra. Normally that doesn't come in lam-rim teachings but I thought that's very important, how the person is dying, what is happening within the person. In the west… I mean the person usually goes through the evolution then he dies, nobody knows, there is nobody who is explaining about it, after going through that. Anyway in the west many people remember, young and old, many people, there are people who remember past and future lives but because society doesn't believe, even though it is your real experience, even though that is your real insight, the quality, the power of your mind, you have that power of mind to be able to, clarity, your mind is much more, clear from pollutions, defilements, pollution, less pollution.

Mind is much more clear and more insight so able to see, not only able to remember coming from mother's womb, able to remember in the womb, able to remember even before coming in the womb, so able to see past, future, yours and others, but because society believes, society doesn't have that education, the society, general people don't have that education, that kind of deeper knowledge, doesn't have, doesn't accept, so they accept only, what common, ordinary people, what they understand is the one life and what you see. Therefore it is based on that, so therefore even they do have those experiences they are afraid to tell in the society, in the public, because other people will think you are strange, even though that is your actual realisation, actual experience.

But of course now a days, now become, these last 30 years reincarnation and karma, very common thing to… more and more discuss, people talk about, they want to learn, they want to know about it, their interest is growing, now that become more familiar, reincarnation, than not. Every year more people becoming familiar with this, more education of this, so become more and more familiar, gradually coming society more and more… I mean still, if you compare with the people who don't have that education, those who have education are small, but always increasing, so getting better, deeper knowledge of mind is happening.

It’s like in a country where there are a lot of people who have goiter, country in which everybody has a goiter, then somebody doesn't have a goiter, very strange, everybody thinks very strange, so like that. What is the culture of the society, what it believes, what it doesn't believe, if in that society’s culture doesn't have that education then regarded as very strange, that's what it is, even though that is the real experience of that person, real discovery of that person through power of mind, clarity of mind, so like that.

Also, what you believe, generally speaking your belief depends on when you are born into your new life what comes first, what culture is introduced first. What belief is introduced to you first, your belief follows that. Normally speaking, not everybody; so you are born in a new life, fresh, then what kind of culture you encounter, what kind of belief you are given by the society, by other people. So not necessary, that doesn't means its correct, because this what you believe so far from birth, not necessarily like that, not necessary it's correct. Have to analyse, because after birth so far what you believe is what you are taught by society, influenced by society, doesn't mean that it is correct, not necessarily. It depends what it is, depends whether it accords with reality or not, the belief what you are taught, what you are given by society or culture, so a lot depends on that. You are reborn, new life, fresh then believe what you are given by others. So one has to analyse, check.

Anyway it seems maybe when the meditator, not sure but when the meditator meditates on clear light… you see here like this, there are 24 absorptions happening at the time of death, when the person is dying, even the animals, so through meditation, through the highest tantra meditation this can happen, these 24 absorptions happen, those visions, appearances, happen at the time of death when the mind, gross mind absorbs, become more and more subtle, then extremely subtle mind, the clear light, only that is left.

So everything that time stops, everything, while one is meditating, stops breathing, everything, there is no movement, barely. Person, the similar experience, what happens at the death time, absorption, that happens in the meditation, those practitioners of, the yogis, the practitioners who have realisation of the gradual completion stage, the second stage, those who have experience of clear light, illusory body, these things, unification. Then, they use… not only the death experience happens but they use highest tantra method on that to purify the death, to purify the intermediate state, to purify the rebirth, ordinary death, ordinary rebirth to purify those. With the second stage of completion stage of highest yoga tantra you actually purify ordinary death, ordinary intermediate state and so one, then you actualise path-time dharmakaya, path-time sambhogakaya, path-time nirmanakaya. The wind manifests, those meditators’ wind is able to manifest into deity's holy body, and can travel; manifest into deity's holy body and do practise with subtle bodies, then can travel, like Lama Yeshe, like that.

In Dharamsala, told myself and there was one monk called Lama Gyupa who does altars, who does the water bowls in the different rooms, so the caretaker of the shrine rooms, different shrine rooms at Tushita Retreat Centre. Anyway, Lama doesn't tell public, only tells if he meets meditators, very close friend meditators, then he talk on those experiences, those very highest tantra realisations, like that, talks about, shares the experience, or however, those high attainments, so you find out from that conversation what kind of realisation, highest tantra realization, that Lama has. Not in public, he never showed in public, Lama never showed he is a meditator, practically never show, he may manifest as a business person, he may manifest in many different ways, but never show meditator, that he is a yogi. Common people, even Tibetan people, no idea, inside great yogi, no idea; they only believe what appears outside.

So anyway Lama mentioned that he can come, without the gross body he can come with his subtle body, he can come, told Lama Gyupa - the one who took care of the shrine rooms, making offerings - can come in his room. So anyway the yogis who have achieved clear light, illusory body this is what they can do, with the subtle body, in the deity’s holy body they do practise. Also going to pure land and doing practise, make offering, do practise in pure land of buddhas. They do practises, then they enter back into old body, do the common things such as eating, giving teachings, giving advice however, entering back into the old body and then do normal activities.

So there is base time three kayas, that means death, intermediate stage and rebirth; path time three kayas, then result time three kayas, the dharmakaya, sambhogakaya, nirmanakaya. So anyway these yogis, the ones who achieve this clear light, illusory body, these are the ones, with these realisations then actually purify, that is the actual weapon to purify the ordinary death, intermediate stage and rebirth, all that; achieve enlightenment, achieve the result-time three kaya.

So here what I am going to mention is this, the very last, when you die, the very last extremely subtle mind, extremely subtle mind, extremely subtle mind… so there is a central channel at the heart - the heart is not this pumping one, but merging from the two breasts here, the heart - so all the gross mind and subtle minds absorbed, then extremely subtle consciousness, that is called the (Tib chisentamo?), the extremely subtle mind of death. Externally look completely, no sensation, nothing, but the mind is still there; externally no sensation, nothing, everything absorbed, no heat, nothing, all the heat absorbed so nothing, body completely death looking.

Even that time the consciousness is still there. So the very last one is this extremely subtle mind; then… as from the seed sprout is coming, like that, then from that, the gross body, gross wind, from the extremely subtle wind and mind, gross wind and mind come out. The extremely subtle mind leaves from the indestructible seat and then gross wind and mind after it has left from there. So when it manifest into gross wind and mind, that is the intermediate state being's body. If you are going to be reborn desire realm or form realm - formless realm doesn't have - desire realm or form realm if you are going to reincarnate, then there is intermediate state, generally speaking.

So the extremely subtle mind and wind leaves from the indestructible subtle seed, then, gross wind and mind, that is intermediate state being's body, that gross wind is intermediate state being’s body.

Then from which door comes out, depending on that then you reincarnate in that realm. If it comes from the crown then either you go to pure land of Buddha, and the best one is Shambhala, Kalachakra’s pure land, Shambhala, where you can practise tantra, achieve enlightenment there. Especially Vajrayogini pure land, Heruka's pure land where you definitely become enlightened there. Then Amitaba's pure land where you never get reborn in lower realms from that time, or some lamas, my Guru Trijang Rinpoche, root Guru Trijang Rinpoche said in Amitabha pure land you can practise tantra and become enlightened. In some of the pure land of the deities you can practise tantra and become enlightened.

So if consciousness leaves from here, either you get reborn in pure land or formless realm. I think if it leaves from the mouth is preta, if consciousness leaves from mouth. If it leaves from anus then it is hell, that person is going to reincarnate in hell. If the consciousness leaves from the urine path, through the sex organ, then animal. So depending from where ears, nose, navel then different types of beings, going to reincarnate.

It is true… in the text, in the teaching of the Buddha, where the main location of the mind, where the extremely subtle mind is abiding is at the heart; because of that then when we get angry the angry doesn't come from the brain anger arises from here, when you get attachment when you get desire doesn't come down from the brain, go down, it comes from here. When you feel pride, pride doesn't come down, pride comes from here; when you feel jealous of somebody it comes from here. So your ordinary daily life experiences are harmonious with the text, harmonious with what the Buddha explained. The ordinary real experience of life is harmonious with the text, with what the Buddha says.

Anyway… I am not sure what I am going to do now, also many obstacles tonight, so I am just going to, I think tonight just finish the lung, oral transmission, not much left.

It is very important to think and have discussion, a lot of discussion on the reincarnation and karma, rebirth and death; I think it is very, very important. If you think that there is no reincarnation then… many of these experiences… even in the past I remember in meditation courses I gave this technique, during the discussion of reincarnation, about mind all that, I guided this meditation going back. So you go back the next year, you go back more and more and more, you go back childhood time, then you go back mother's womb, you go back to conception time… so there happened many people…

I remember one person… those who have very stable concentration, those who are able to concentrate, very stable and very precisely, when they go back to conception time mother's womb then they try to go beyond that… one person had a very strong vision, very strong feelings, vision, being in Tibet. The person was in Tibet, the person saw the room and the Tibetan tea, you have to churn because you mix with butter, you have to churn, more you churn more delicious, better, in the wooden container you have to churn. The person could remember so clearly the room and the butter, the container to churn the buttered tea, could see very clearly.

So during this meditation many people who have clear mind and are able to concentrate, whose concentration is very stable, very good concentration and clear mind, just by doing this simple meditation, you go back to conception time, then go beyond, many people get experiences, even during our past courses. Maybe some of you may have even this time, may have similar, it is possible for some, not everybody, not that it happens to everybody.

So anyway if one thinks there is no reincarnation, very difficult to understand reincarnation, if one feels that there is no reincarnation then one should analyze, you should put a lot of questions to yourself, analyse, then you should ask question. I mean there are many logics in the philosophical texts, however, the very simple thing is, what about so many young and old who are able to remember? This is besides the incarnate Lamas, this is without talking about incarnate Lamas, like His Holiness the Dalai Lama able to remember, recognise attendant, all his belongings able to remember. He mentioned even the name of the Lama as soon as the Lama came to the house to examine the incarnation. It was already proved by the deity, by the protector, the Lama spent seven days, he put tent, there is a special lake in Tibet lake of the protector Palden Lhamo. So whatever question you have it is exactly like TV it shows, that is Tibetan TV! From the lake, whatever question you have it shows.

Also I went there. I went to Tibet two times. First time I went spent only five days in Lhasa but came back, but second time I was supposed to be there only one month but took a lot of time. I was looking for some text commentary of the secret compassion Buddha, Gyalwa Gyatso. So I had to go to Amdo, lower place in Tibet, the specific Monastery that Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche explained. So trying to get this text so took a lot of time, so I spent two months in Tibet.

There is one area. you have to go from Lhasa, there is one very special place, very special place, where there is this lake where many people they look for their Guru's incarnation from that lake, where the protector shows where the Guru the Lama has reincarnated, house, parents, the child playing or sometimes child is protected by a protector, that Lama’s previous life protector, Dharma protector. So that child is there playing, the protector also running after that child, because the protector has commitment to protect this Lama from past times.

The people who have come to examine this lake, the Tibetan Government and this Lama Ketsang Rinpoche, not this present incarnation but a previous life of Ketsang Rinpoche, spent seven days every day examining HH Dalai Lama's reincarnation in the lake, asking questions. Then they saw the house blue, maybe like Chinese, blue tiles, mother and father, everything showed. So like that it was already proved, but then they go down to family disguised, wearing the mala and stick of past life of Lama, and the child, the incarnation, came over to the stick, took the mala, called the name, able to recognise the Lama things like that...
