The following are excerpts of Lama Zopa Rinpoche's teachings at the Mahamudra Retreat hosted by Buddha House, in Mylor, South Australia, from 9 April to 4 May, 2004. These recordings do not form a complete record of the retreat, as they do not include teachings by other Sangha, various prayers and dedications, and portions of the initiations and secret teachings.

Day 23: Evening Teaching - Part A

So as great enlightened being Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo mentioned in Calling the Guru from Afar, there, [pause] after the verse that, remembering the kindness of the guru, sang gyä kun gyi pang pai kal chha nyam thag dag la, ma nor lam zang tan tshul sam kyin la ma dran no. So, to me, who has no fortune, who is abandoned, me who is abandoned by all the buddhas, who do not have fortune, missed the fortune, while I’m thinking that you the guru, that you are showing me, how you are showing me the unmistaken path, so while I’m reflecting this, I remember the guru. So remember the guru’s kindness. [pause]

Is that? Maybe I made a mistake the last verse? It says, while I’m reflecting that I’m being guided with compassion, is there one? The very, this is the verse at the very end of the guru....

Ven. Sarah: Yeah, Rinpoche, but...

Rinpoche:Before talking about the meaning of the life, before talking about the....

Ven. Sarah: Yes, Rinpoche. But I don’t know if this translation’s correct

Rinpoche: So the, while I’m thinking that I’m being guided by your compassion, is there one?

Ven. Sarah: Yes, Rinpoche

Rinpoche: Ah, that’s right. So while I’m thinking being guided with your compassion, I remember the guru, you see, remember the kindness of the guru.

Then next one, nye gya don chhei ten zang khe nyen kyi dug dam ga, ma nor nying po len do sam kyin la ma dran no. So, what I want to say is the next one. Nye gya don chhei ten zang khe nyen kyi dug dam ga, ma nor nying po len do sam kyin la ma dran no. [Pause]

While I’m reflecting the wish to take the essence, so, while I’m reflecting the wishing to, the choice of the profit and loss, happiness or suffering, profit or loss, or happiness or suffering, so while I’m reflecting the wishing to take the choice, the profit or loss, happiness or suffering, without mistake. So it means unmistaken choice, taking the profit of loss or happiness or suffering, so taking the essence on this, I’ve forgotten, while I’m thinking I’ve forgot the beginning part, how it goes? Can you recite?

Ven. Sarah: Which bit, Rinpoche?

Rinpoche: Just before that. That section.

Ven. Sarah: Not the nye gya don chhei? Nye gya don chhei ten zang....

Rinpoche: Nye gya don chhei ten zang...., on this body that which is extremely difficult to find and which has great meaning. So which means this body, which is extremely difficult to find, but if it’s found that which has great meaning, so on this body. So, to take the essence, wishing to take the essence, without, to take the essence, wishing to take the essence, that which is the unmistaken choice of the loss, the profit, loss, happiness or suffering, I remember the guru.

So however, so this time then we have received this precious human body qualified of eight freedoms, ten richness, that which is extremely difficult to find again. Like the, after each hundred years the blind turtle comes up on the surface of the water, surface of the ocean, Pacific Ocean, and able to put the neck through the golden ring, which always moves, doesn’t stay in one place, how that is so difficult to happen that, to come up, which is very rarely comes up, but then, cannot see, eyes are blind, so blind, here, the example is blind turtle, so not knowing what is right to practice, what is wrong to abandon, not having Dharma wisdom, so blind like this. While it is blind like this, then, so how that is so difficult, this example, blind turtle, then comes very rarely and then able to, then these two things to happen, come up then also able to put the head through the golden ring, ring which always moves. So similar, so this, it’s extremely difficult to receive this precious human body, extremely difficult, that which meets Buddhadharma, so entering the golden ring, that meet Buddhadharma, enter in the Buddhadharma, that is by having refuge in the heart, relying upon the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha with the mind being qualified of two causes, the understanding the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha has power, qualities to liberate, not just from the lower realm suffering but from the whole entire, the oceans of samsaric sufferings and the useful fear, the intelligent fear or the useful fear, understanding how the samsara is in the nature of suffering. So, this, extremely difficult, such this to happen, to meet these two things, such this precious human body, then able to enter Buddhadharma, able to meet or able to enter in the Buddhadharma, so extremely difficult to happen, it did happen, so happened this time. So this is just about once, just about once that it happened, that it happened this time.

Then if this, such this precious human body, have met Buddhadharma, which is extremely to find, and if it is found, it has great meaning. So, now, so while we have, how long, we have received this now, but how long we will have this, how many years, how many months, how many weeks, how many days, how many hours that one will have this, this perfect human body, that which is extremely difficult to find, if it’s found it has great meaning. So, how many years, months, or weeks or days, hours we have from now on, so one has great freedom, choice, from this second then whether to choose profit or loss, whether to choose happiness or suffering. So, we have choice. We have the opportunity to choose. Not only that, in every minute we have a choice, with this perfect human rebirth. We have a choice in every minute, to choose, I mean, to have unmistaken, to choose the profit or loss or suffering or happiness without mistake. To take the essence. Even in each second we have this choice, to take the essence, unmistaken choice, profit, loss or happiness or suffering.

However, what Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo is saying is that, not only year, months, weeks, days, hours, but even a minute, even within a second, with this perfect human rebirth, that has met Buddhadharma, that which is extremely difficult to find, which is found has great meaning, so this that even within a second, you have opportunity to do unmistaken choice, hell or enlightenment, which one? You have a choice. In every second you have a choice. So, you create the cause to be born in hell or you create the cause to achieve enlightenment. You have, in each second you have opportunity, you have unmistaken choice to take the essence. Samsara or liberation, in every second, in each second you have a choice which one, the samsara or liberation, you have a choice. So one has opportunity to take the essence, to make unmistaken choice. Abandon, instead of choosing samsara, you choose liberation. Instead of creating the cause of samsara, you create the cause of liberation. Same before, instead of choosing hell, you choose enlightenment, you create the cause of, instead of creating the cause of hell, you create the cause of enlightenment.

So, any second you have choice, you choose lower realm or the realm of the happy transmigratory being, you have a choice. So to abandon the lower realms and to take, to achieve, the choice to achieve the body of the happy transmigratory being, after this life. So one has the opportunity to take this essence, this unmistaken, this choice. So in every second, with this perfect human body there’s a choice, you have freedom to choose, to take the loss, the lower realms, or profit, the body of the suffering transmigratory being or the body of the happy transmigratory being, which one to take.

So, [pause] it is completely in your hand, it’s completely up to you, up to oneself, whether you choose, in every second, whether you choose loss or profit, happiness or suffering. Another way of putting, whether you choose, with this perfect human body, choice, choose suffering or choose the happiness, create the cause of the suffering or create, you abandon the cause of suffering and create the cause of happiness, in every second. So this way, by saying this, one way it makes, how this perfect human body that we have at this time, how this is wish-fulfilling, how this is so precious, unbelievable precious, as I mentioned in the past, more precious, more wish-fulfilling than external material, wish-fulfilling jewel, even the whole sky filled with the, not only gold and diamond, but filled with the wish-granting jewel, cannot, even you own that much, with that much, even you have that much wealth, whole sky filled with the wish-granting jewel, but with that alone cannot fulfill your wishes, to achieve, to stop rebirth in the lower realms, that suffering, that loss, and then achieve profit, happiness, the higher realm, to stop the reincarnating in samsara, so that suffering and then the happiness, the liberation. So even one own that much wealth, sky filled with that much wish-granting jewel cannot stop samsara, achieve liberation from samsara. So even one own that much wealth, that alone you can’t, that can’t stop falling the lower nirvana and achieve great liberation, full enlightenment.

So this perfect human rebirth that we have received at this time, once, so this is unbelievable precious, much more precious than that much wealth, whole sky filled with wish-granting jewels, all those, the value of that much wealth is nothing compared the value of this perfect human rebirth that we have now. So, even there’s only one hour left, even we have life only for one hour, even we have life only one minute to live, even there’s only one second, still even with, before death, as I mentioned the other times, by generating bodhicitta one create the cause of enlightenment and by the way, cause of liberation, cause of happiness of future rebirths, all this comes, by the way one achieve, with this perfect human body, even within a second. By generating bodhicitta you can, one can achieve all that, with this perfect human body. So even there’s only a minute, a second left, still one has this great opportunity, yeah. Can do the unmistaken choice, can take the essence, the unmistaken choice.

So now, so what he’s saying is that, that we have this, that we have all this, so how many years or months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, seconds we have from this second, that we have all this incredible freedom, opportunity to make the unmistaken choice, to take the essence on this body, so this, having this incredible opportunity this that we have, it’s only by the kindness of the guru. It’s only by the kindness of the guru. So here what it’s saying is, so while I’m thinking, wishing to take the essence, the unmistaken choice, the loss and profit, happiness, suffering, I remember the guru, so it means remembering the guru’s kindness. So that I have all this opportunity, this incredible opportunity even each second that incredible opportunity, this perfect human rebirth, having received this perfect human body. So first of all, by having received this precious human body is by the kindness of the guru, that in the past, as I think I mentioned one time, so by thinking the real meaning of guru, so the very essence, the ultimate guru, absolute guru, so then this way all the past life gurus, present life, future, all one. Even though they appeared to, different body, but, different shape, however, different body, but however, in reality, the guru that one had in the past life, present, that will be in the future, it’s all just one. All just one, until one achieve enlightenment, it’s all one. So if one think really meaning of guru, what does really it mean, so the ultimate guru, the essence, absolute guru, so then the primordial the zung jug dang poi gon po, in Tibetan, it comes in the Guru Puja that when we request, thinking of the different qualities of the guru, then near the end, the unified, zung jug, unified, dang poi gon po, the primordial savior, so that is the ultimate guru. So, in reality just one being, just one, even though different, one’s own, meet in different form, different human form, however, in one’s own different lives. So, by, in the past by teaching karma and then teaching refuge and karma, then one gave the Dharma wisdom, what is right to practice, what is wrong thing to abandon, so one practice morality, so received this precious human body. Not only that, on the basis of that then, created the cause, the precious human body qualified of eight freedoms and ten richness. So, in the past, then not only have met Buddhadharma but have met Mahayana Paramitayana teachings, not only that then have met tantra, secret mantra, Vajrayana teachings, so in the past have practiced, those vows were given in the past, practiced, and because of that, in this life have met all the three levels of teachings of Buddha. So just receiving this perfect human rebirth, this precious human body qualified of eight freedoms, ten richness, so completely by the kindness of the guru. So these gurus that one has visualized there, so one, these gurus that one has in this life, it’s visualized in the merit field, so received completely by their kindness.

So now, now having all this incredible freedom, choice, so without the loss to take, only the profit, to achieve only happiness, we have all this choice, to make unmistaken choice, so this completely by the kindness of the guru, in every second. [Pause]

So that’s what it’s saying here, while I’m thinking, wishing to take the essence, the unmistaken choice, I remember the guru. So means the guru’s kindness.

So, having the opportunity, having this freedom to do the unmistaken choice, that’s one thing. But I think also it means, stop the loss and take the profit or stop the suffering and choose the happiness, to make the decision, obtaining the happiness, happiness of future lives, liberation from samsara, full enlightenment. So here it only happens by devoting to the gurus, it only happens if one devote to the guru.

Then the other, another way to think here, what it’s saying, by following the guru, [pause] according to the guru’s holy wishes, according to the guru’s advice, so devoting to the guru.

So, [pause] so even this, without the loss, taking only the profit, only the happiness, not just only achieving happiness of future lives, but even the liberation from samsara, achieving that, not sufficient, because cherishing the I, seeking happiness only for self, that is opening the door for all the sufferings, all the undesirable things, all the obstacles. So by cherishing the I, seeking only the happiness of oneself, so that’s what we did, that’s what we practiced, not only from the birthtime, from the birth of this life, not only that, from beginningless rebirth. Because of that, this is what we practiced all the time from beginningless rebirth, cherishing the I, seeking happiness only for self, so therefore, still didn’t achieve enlightenment, still did not achieve enlightenment, because abiding or keeping this great demon, the self-cherishing thought in one’s own heart, so still we didn’t achieve enlightenment, one didn’t achieve enlightenment, it didn’t allow to achieve enlightenment up to now, from beginningless rebirth. Not only that, it didn’t allow even to achieve liberation from samsara, it didn’t allow even to achieve liberation, liberation, that which is free forever from samsara, so didn’t allow to achieve even that for oneself. So it didn’t allow to achieve any, even though the continuity of consciousness has no beginning, even though the rebirth, the continuity of our rebirth has no beginning, but still didn’t achieve any realization of lam-rim, steps of the path to enlightenment. That still mind is empty of bodhicitta. Still the mind is empty of wisdom realizing emptiness. Knowing that, still the mind is empty of renunciation of samsara. Still the mind is empty of not only renunciation of future samsara, but empty of renunciation, empty of the first Dharma, first lam-rim, first Dharma, the renunciation to this life, by having realization of perfect human rebirth, usefulness, difficult to find again and impermanent, nature of life, impermanence-death, with awareness of the suffering of the lower realms related with karma. So, didn’t achieve realization the first lam-rim, or the very first realization of lam-rim, the realization of the lower capable being, by meditating on these things then let go attachment, free oneself from the attachment clinging to this life, so even that, didn’t achieve, even the very first lam-rim, the realization of the lower capable being.

So as long as this great demon, the self-cherishing thought is abiding in one’s own heart, that one, same, one will never achieve enlightenment, also in the future, as long as this great demon, self-cherishing thought, is kept, abiding in one’s own heart, liberation from samsara, it won’t allow to have any realization, as it made the mind, as it made one’s own mental continuum completely empty, so far completely empty, so it will be same also in the future. And then, not only that, only suffering, only continuously suffer, without end experience suffering of samsara, then particularly the three lower realms.

So, [pause] as great bodhisattva Shantideva mentioned that, [Tibetan] so as long as you don’t drop the fire, the burning cannot be stopped. Like that, if one doesn’t let go I, the suffering cannot be abandoned or suffering cannot be stopped. Therefore, in order to pacify one’s own sufferings and sufferings of others, give up oneself for others, cherish others as oneself.

So therefore, so cherishing others is opening the door for all the happiness, all the qualities. [pause] All this past, present, future happiness, realizations, enlightenment, all this we receive from bodhicitta, cherishing others, so the skies of benefit of bodhicitta that is explained in the teachings, in sutra, in the first chapter of Bodhicaryavatara, the first chapter, all these skies of benefit of bodhicitta that is explained, all these received, all these comes from the sentient beings, comes from every single sentient being, like the crops, food, the crops come from the field, so therefore we regard the field very precious. So the skies of benefit what bodhicitta, that what Buddha says, can’t be finished explaining all the benefits of bodhicitta, all comes from, by depending on, all comes from each and every single sentient being: each and every single human being, each and every single insect, every single sentient being, hell beings, hungry ghosts, sura, asuras, from every single obscured suffering sentient being. So receive, came from them, the bodhicitta, which is so precious, which is wish-fulfilling, all the wish-fulfilling, fulfilling all your happiness, fulfilling happiness for numberless sentient beings, temporary, ultimate happiness, from where bodhicitta, from where all your past, present, future happiness came from and bodhicitta from where numberless sentient beings their past, present, future, all the happiness comes from bodhicitta, so that bodhicitta is, came from, by depending on the kindness of each sentient being, it’s generated by depending on the existence of each obscured suffering sentient being. So it’s generated by the kindness of each and every single sentient being, that wish-fulfilling, this most precious, this bodhicitta that Buddha said can never finish explaining the benefit, so this bodhicitta came from, by the kindness of each and every single sentient being. So therefore, each and every single sentient being’s unbelievable precious. The most precious, the most precious one, and they are, so like how much the bodhicitta is wish-fulfilling, so exactly every single sentient being is wish-fulfilling, wish-fulfilling jewel, so using that as an example. Using an example to, so how we feel with money, when we think of money, we think money, we feel money is so precious, because you know that what you can do so much with the money, you can buy food, can survive, so so many things one can do. So now similar, the trying to feel, by using the name, even though the value of the wish-granting jewel is nothing, as I mentioned before, even filled the whole sky, but easy to realize the billion dollars or millions dollars how they’re precious and rare to get, all that, then wish-granting jewel, easy to understand how they’re so precious, so to feel at least even like that to the sentient beings, so precious. So every sentient being is a wish-fulfilling jewel, one’s own wish-fulfilling jewel.

However, in the, quite a number of, quite some years ago, so Roger bought a car, in California, this, what’s it called? This red car? What’s it called? Huh? The first one. The van. So he bought this red car. I think one student’s husband, so I think the husband’s friend, something related, so I think got kind of quite reasonable price, and it has also small TV there inside the car, the van. So anyway, quite a noisy one. So, this car has, so he was very excited, so he brought the car outside of the John Jackson’s, the ex-director of Vajrapani, when I was staying there, so he brought the car. But I didn’t go to look at the car. I went the next morning, late morning to see the car. So it’s very, so tried to think, this is sentient beings’ car, but of course it lasted only a few seconds. Tried to think this is sentient beings’ car, but it lasted only a few seconds. Disappeared after that.

Anyway, so, I suggested, so when we were at Geshe Sopa’s, Deer Park, in Madison, taking teachings from Geshe Sopa, taking a course, so that time, maybe it was that time, I’m not sure, so made the message on the car. So this side, one side it has message that the cherishing others is the source of happiness, something like that. And the other side, by His Holiness, the “my religion is kindness.” But I added the words “to all,” just to make a little more clear, to all, so other side, other side of car the message is that. Then it has Buddha, White Tara, Maitreya Buddha, Thirty-five Buddhas, many deities pictures around, deities sticked on the car. So it was made in Madison when we’re taking a course from Geshe Sopa, so one shop they did the work for all this.

And also, so many insects, when you drive the car, certain places, so many insects get crushed, they get crushed on the window of the car, so many, certain places, and the window completely get filled with the, that, they crushed on that, so that the body, it splashes, like water splash, so all their body, uh? Splashed, squashed. I think it’s both splashed and squashed. Then even sometimes you can’t (?) separate. So sometimes try to think the wind coming from above the car and push them away. Sometimes it looks like, I didn’t do a long time but sometimes it looks like a little bit helping, I’m not sure but anyway....

So what to do? So came with the idea to put something round the car, some, I don’t know what it’s called. What’s it called? Yangchen? Huh? Uh? This thing you put around, uh? [Inaudible response from Ven. Yangchen.] This one, yeah. So that, it’s said that it would help, but anyway, even that was put, not much. So the idea came to put mantras over the car, front of the car. So you put all those powerful mantras, these five powerful mantras, Mitukpa and all the many different mantras use, not only the five powerful mantras. I don’t think there’s every single, all the five, but much of it is there, other additional mantras. So that shop, so, I don’t know whether it’s printed or, over the car. So that is, so the wind, rain, whatever comes, if it touches that they get blessed then touched the insects, the flies or, so they get purified, their negative karma get purified. So even they die there but at least they touched the mantras and their negative karma get purified. So did that.

And then [pause] back side of the car, on the wheel, there’s Chenrezig mantra, OM MANI PADME HUM, anyone who see, of course, it purifies their defilements, negative karma, and plants seed of enlightenment, as I mentioned the other day. Then, down below it has writing that any, may anybody who see this car, dreams of this car, sees this car or dreams, remember or dreams of this car, never ever, I don’t remember exactly, reborn in the lower realms, I’m not sure. However, to be, I think, to be free from suffering and to achieve enlightenment, anyway, soon. So that and anybody who sees the car, who remembers, who touches, so that prayer is written there, so to have that, them to get all this benefit.

So later, I got the Namgyalma mantra, the mandala, Namgyalma mantra. Somehow due to some good karma, how to say, was it Brian? I don’t know from whom he got, he got from somebody this Namgyalma, the long mantra, this mandala. So Namgyalma, so usually, if you have Namgyalma mantra in the banner, inside the banner then even the shadow of the banner, whomever it touches, any people or any animals or any sentient being, whom the shadow of the banner touches, their negative karma get purified, doesn’t get reborn in the lower realms. If that mantra’s inside a house, then anybody who live in the house, they always get purified. And if that mantra is on the top of the mountain, then insects, people, animals, who are going over that mountain, who touch that mountain, going over that mountain, their negative karma get purified and they don’t get reborn in the lower realms. So it’s mentioned in the text that Buddha explained the extensive benefit of the Namgyalma mantra.

So, same, if you have in the car, this mantra, just the mantra or this mandala, either way, so same, all the people who come in the car they get purified all the time. Then also, there are so many insects when you drive, can see, you can’t see, they get killed, so it’s, if you have the mantra on the mountain it has that benefit, in the house, in the banner, then even the shadow touches other beings their negative karma get purified, they don’t get reborn in the lower realms, so same here, by having in the car then all those insects, even they die under the wheel but at least their negative karma get purified, touching the car and being under the car, their negative karma get purified. Or the shadow of the car touches them, goes over them, their negative karma get purified.

So later, because of these benefits, so made many copies of that, and keep in the car. At the window there’s pockets. And also I was given to, somebody in Singapore, somebody made many, many copies after I explained that, so then that gave opportunity to give to many, many people, to use the same in the car, to put in the car.

So here, since I brought the issue about the, describing about the car, that is part of making the life meaningful. So when we drive a car there’s so many insects get killed, so how to make, even though they get killed, sometimes difficult and you can’t stop the car, you’re driving fast. So, many insects get killed, so somehow, to make meaningful, so even those insects, even they get killed but somehow touching, their being under the car, even they get killed under the wheel, but their negative karma get purified. So to have the Namgyalma mantra, these powerful mantras inside. So that’s, since I brought up the car, I would like to emphasize, part of our life to make beneficial when we, for other sentient beings, because there’s a lot of harm when we drive a car. So even when we walk there are insects we don’t see and get stepped over and killed, so no question about a car. So that, I want to emphasize that, to make, so even they get killed but however, no, without choice or however, unable to see, however, so at least their negative karma get purified.

Or there’s this mantra, if you’re walking, like here, for example, here, round where there’s many insects like this, if you’re walking, so the mantra that you recite and spit after you recite a certain number, whatever, five, six, seven, whatever number you recite then you spit under the feet, you spit, there it says spit under the feet, but however, since we wear shoes, so you recite the mantra then spit, blow, under your shoes, under chappals, under shoes, you spit under the shoes. So there, it has benefit that, in case that being dies, gets crushed, died under the shoes, shoes touching over that being, then that being, I guess the mantra must purify, by blessing over the, under the shoes, then touching that must purify the negative karma, so that makes to be born in deva realm, Thirty-three realm. However, could do the same, you chant this mantra and blow over the wheel, blow over the car wheels, the side of the wheel which touches on the ground, so you blow over, whole round, you blow over them. So the same, doesn’t have to be only under the feet, so as it’s mentioned, so can have some, same benefit as, so like that. Sometimes there’s so many ants in the road, so like that.

Whatever way, so in our life, whatever way we can benefit others, so must do it. Whatever way we can benefit others, so if it didn’t have benefit Buddha wouldn’t teach, Buddha wouldn’t give these, wouldn’t teach these mantras, wouldn’t have mentioned these mantras, in the Kangyur, in the Buddha’s teachings, if there’s no benefit wouldn’t have mentioned these mantras, so definitely there’s a purpose for these mantras. Again it doesn’t mean, Oh, I blessed my shoes, with the mantra, I can step over. You go everywhere, step over the, all the animals. It’s not saying to do like that. So without choice killed or without seeing killed, then to benefit like this.

So the story why I talked about the car was this. That car, that first car went for the relic tour, for the Buddha’s relic tour, to help Maitreya Project, that was the original idea, but in reality, but in fact it benefited unbelievable, it caused devotion in so many people’s mind. Even people who are not Buddhist, somehow Buddha must be working, because even people who are not Buddhist, who haven’t read Dharma books, but when they see the relics somehow they feel so much power, so much devotion, there’s been incredible, skies of benefit, the relic tour. Unbelievable benefit. In so many incredible devotion rises seeing, so definitely Buddha must be blessing their mind. And then there are many people who get, who have certain experiences, seeing the whole room light, or, there are many things, that it has, I mean, it did help quite a bit for the project, but the project’s so big, the project is, if it’s a small monastery then, if it’s some monastery that, one or two, three million dollars’ monastery, then of course, that (?) seems a lot, what you get from that, but since this is a huge, anyway, at the moment $200 million and 50, but not sure. Could be more, could increase. Anyway, but it has been benefiting unbelievable in the world, the relic, the Buddha’s relic tour. Very surprising, very surprising, incredible benefit. There are quite a bit of relics, so I think now, many places want relics, to receive the relics so I think they now divided, to do at the same time different places.

So however, so that car was, that car, first car, van, they need for tour. So then bought smaller cars, so then they all have message around, the different messages around, in the front, around and buddhas, Tara’s, different buddhas’ pictures sticked on the car, so that, even by that, while you’re driving in the road, so you can purify so many sentient beings, their mind, as I mentioned, I mentioned yesterday, quoted to sutra, you remember, it’s called (?) The be top kyi chag kye do, the Sutra of Generating the Power of Devotion, the Sutra of the Mudra Generating the Power of Devotion, so as mentioned there, just by seeing, how incredible merit, numberless great merit that create. Then every day making those hundreds of divine food, nectar, dress, so many offerings every day for eons to the arhats equaling the number of the atoms of the universes, so all those merits, itself is unbelievable, but when you compare just seeing Buddha’s, even a painting or picture, statue, this has far more greater, the other one become small. So it plants seed of enlightenment, everyone who see, purify the mind, plants seed of enlightenment. So, and that brings, definitely it brings them to enlightenment in time.

So, only one time I saw somebody’s not happy. In California one time I saw somebody was, I think, very upset, seeing the message, I think not so much Buddha, I think message around the car, I think. I think perhaps maybe strong Christian, I think maybe they’re not happy, Buddhist, I think might be due to that. So they, so one time driving to the airport, I think, one car came, so there was one man, I think he did, what’s the mudra of bad? This one or? The man, he was disturbed, he was unhappy, so he did, through the car window he, he did some mudra, he did some, I don’t remember, I think it means really bad, something, putting down, but I’ve forgotten now. Something like that, or I’m not sure what.

But usually you see so many people so happy to see the message especially. So one time we were going to the airport, I think, to San Francisco. So, I’m not sure who are these people, but one car, so he read this part, the car’s going like this, so he read this part, then he came back, then he went round, while we were driving car went round like this, so read all this, read all the, so most people usually, I saw only one time very kind of upset, but most people are very happy, very happy. I think one time, when you park the car at the supermarket, one lady brought flowers there, at the car. So she was happy, very happy to see the, and somebody copy the message there, whoever see the car, touch, remember or dreams of it, to purify all the sufferings, free from all the sufferings and to generate compassion, to all beings, and to achieve enlightenment, something like that.

So anyway, the reason why it came to this topic was, I just elaborated the story of the car but one of the messages, the message wasn’t put there, but one of the messages is, Whenever you see somebody to feel your wish-fulfilling, whenever you meet somebody, to think your wish-fulfilling jewel, something like that. I don’t remember the, yeah, so that’s the essence. Whenever you see somebody, think, This is my wish-fulfilling jewel or, do you remember?

Ven. Sarah: Feel everyone you meets fulfilling your wishes

Rinpoche: Oh, that’s right, she remembered. Because Yangchen helped, not the first car but the second car she helped to put the message around. That’s right.

That’s a very good practice in our daily life, [pause] I think I mentioned one day that how to make life meaningful that, so one you meditate in the morning when the day begins, when your life begins that day, meditate on one day bodhicitta, the seven techniques of Mahayana cause and effect, realizing or recognizing the sentient beings are mother and the kindness, so the seven techniques of Mahayana cause and effect. So one day, so you meditate on that bodhicitta, you begin the day with that, and the rest of the day then, the rest of the day you practice mindfulness. When you see sentient, when you see people or animals, think mother and kindness, and kind. So try to feel that, what you meditate in the mornings, so try to feel that in the rest of the day, whenever you see people or animal, so try to practice that mindfulness, try to feel the mother and kindness.

Then next day the exchanging, bodhicitta, equalizing and exchanging oneself for others, so the extensive kindness, you meditate in the morning so then the rest of the day, you generate bodhicitta in the morning, by meditating on the extensive kindness of sentient beings, shortcomings of self-cherishing, benefit of cherishing others, then exchanging oneself for others. So that day continuing, you begin that daily life with that bodhicitta, how you’re going to live the life, so then, so that day continuously try to keep the mind in that bodhicitta. Whenever, as much as possible try to remember, so whenever one meet, when one meet people or animals, remembering the extensive kindness, like that. Then, when one remember that then naturally you cherish that being. And then respect, to be kind and respect, everything comes in your action, when the mind feel that sentient beings are so precious and kind.

So as far as bodhicitta, so taking the essence, this way then taking the essence on this body, perfect human body, continuously. Continuously. So, then whatever you do is for others, whatever you do it becomes, it is dedicated for others naturally, work for others and that when that happens, when you’re continuing your life the rest of the day, no matter how busy you are, so that, so when you live the life, practice mindfulness in bodhicitta like this, either mother, kind, precious and then, or extensive kindness, meditating on, mindfulness in the extensive kindness of sentient beings, so whatever, eating, walking, sitting, sleeping, whatever activities one does become for others, work for others, and there’s incredible, the effect, there’s incredible joy in your heart, incredible joy and happiness, fulfillment, not just only satisfaction, not only achieving satisfaction in your heart but fulfillment, so much joy, happiness in your heart, in your life. So your life become so, very satisfying, very happy life, very joyful, very happy life, not self-centered, not self-centered life.

In the road, in the street, when we’re walking in the street, [pause] you see some people very self-centered, only thinking of one’s own happiness, only thinking of one’s own problem, only thinking of one’s own problem, completely absorbed, completely, the life is completely involved in one’s own problem, so constantly thinking that, very self-centered, and so when you see that person’s face, it’s very unhappy, very sad face, very unhappy, or kind of very easy to get angry, from the face we can see, very easy to be disturbed and very easy to get angry. So based that attitude, nothing else, there’s nothing else to think about except one’s own problem, only one’s own happiness, “When I will be happy? When I will be happy?”

So, [pause] no, there’s no smile, there’s no tranquility or peace, there’s no appearance of happiness there, very sad, very disturbed, like this, so seeing that face, it doesn’t have a positive effect, it only causes unhappiness to others.

So however, so here, so always, every day, so always that person’s mind, state of unhappiness all the time, so that’s the effect of thinking only one’s own happiness, cherishing the I, very self-centered, the effect is only that, negative. Even physically, even physical appearance is very negative, unpleasant.

So now here when one keep the mind in this bodhicitta practice like this, there’s so much joy in the life, so much happiness and tranquility, peaceful face, smiling, that allows to have smiling face, peaceful, happy face, that makes others also happy.
