Day 10: Prajnaparamita Teachings, Oral Transmission of Diamond Cutter Sutra Continued

...and that Buddha, that which is Prajnaparamita teachings on the Perfection of Wisdom, “Gone Beyond Wisdom,” the actual Buddha's means to liberate us numberless sentient beings from the whole entire, from the unbearable oceans of samsaric suffering, and karma and delusion, which is the cause, which continuation, the suffering, the cause, which continuation did not have beginning. Buddha's, the actual method, way of liberating us sentient beings is this teaching Prajnaparamita.

Buddha told Buddha's attendant Kungawo, Ananda, doesn't matter even all the rest of the other teachings of Buddha, even they are completely destroyed, doesn't matter; even a little bit of these teachings of the Perfection of Wisdom if this is degenerated or destroyed it is much more harmful, great loss.

Buddha said wherever this teaching is Prajnaparamita teaching, Bum or Yum there is about twelve volumes, then there is nyi.che three volumes, then there is Ge.tong.ba 8,000 stanza, I guess 100,000 stanza, 20,000 stanza then 100,000 stanza.

So 100,000 stanza that I am writing now in gold, mainly Nepalese gold, I did use some New York gold which is with colour, is much more brighter, the Nepalese one is like the ones painted on the statues, here Buddha, is more calm, less bright, anyway different nature. So I am writing now with gold and writing also with silver. I am not writing but the nun whom I asked to build a nunnery down there who has also been a translator of many, many years for the organization.

Who was Geshe Sopa's attendant, Rinpoche who was here when he was young, three years study here in Kopan then went to Sera to study, then completed his Geshe become Geshe Lharampa, which means good quality of understanding Dharma, so studied extremely well. So last year I asked him to lead the two month lam-rim course at Dharamsala that was his first teaching after he finished studying, that was his first time. Actually besides the talks here and there that is the actual teaching that he gave two month lung of the text gave teaching based on Kopan course, based on style Kopan course, in Dharamsala. Doing very well I have been receiving letters from students that how they want to continue again with courses from Rinpoche.

However, this nun is his sister. She is actually doing the writing, almost finished Diamond Cutter Sutra in silver on black paper, then she is going to start the 8,000 stanza. I want to have one whole set Prajnaparamita silver, gold. My one is only when I have time, when I am traveling, so I think it would take a long long, time. My idea is to hire, maybe somebody here, some of the monks here and from Sera monastery, to hire some monks to write gold maybe or silver, they get some offerings for their work. So this way I think we finish quicker and then when the Maitreya Buddha statue is erected, it will be ready to offer, to put inside statue at the heart, this, Buddha’s most precious teaching.

So Buddha said, so he said Ananda, Kungawo, even a little bit of this teaching destroyed, rest other teaching doesn't matter, even it destroyed completely, but this one even little bit destroyed it is a great loss. So he gave responsibility to Ananda and said that wherever the teaching Prajnaparamita is, Buddha said, “I am there.”

However, this teaching, Perfection of Wisdom, teachings on emptiness, from where all the numberless past buddhas who were born from this, present buddhas born from this and future buddhas born from this, as well as bodhisattvas born from this, numberless bodhisattvas as well as arhats, numberless arhats who are liberated from samsara are born from this. Also this Wisdom of Perfection “Gone Beyond Wisdom” is the one that liberates, ceases, ceases or liberates numberless sentient beings, including us, from the oceans of samsaric suffering and the cause of the delusion and karma, this teaching, so this teaching is most precious, this teaching of Perfection of Wisdom.

This is including, I am not talking only Diamond Cutter Sutra but the Heart Sutra, the essence. So Prajnaparamita teaching, which I mentioned, is the heart of all the 84,000 teachings of Buddha. Now the very heart of all these teachings of Perfection of Wisdom is the Heart Sutra, Essence of Wisdom Heart Sutra, which is one or two pages.

Geshe Sopa Rinpoche said these teachings, in the Heart Sutra there is Chom den den ma / sherab kyi parchin nyingbo(?) Mother, Bhagawan, chom Destroyer, qualified, gone beyond, mother. Then sherab kyi nyingbo at the heart of Perfection of Wisdom, the mother, why it's called mother… what I explained just before gives you an idea of mother, it gave birth to all of the three times buddhas, bodhisattvas, arhats like that. So as I said these teachings which contain method, directly wisdom, but indirectly method, path, method, so these are called mother. Going into specific explanation.

There are other teachings, Perfection of Wisdom, there are other teachings on emptiness but it does not contain method. But these ones that I have gone through, the names that I mentioned, they are the teachings which contain method. The Abhisamayalamkara, those teachings are directly method but indirectly wisdom, there is also Prajnaparamita, like that.

Then, what is called the death, before that happens in this life, while there is all the opportunities to practise Dharma, everything we have gathered miraculously, miraculously, kind of impossible thing but it happened this time, so before the death happens, then not enough just to be free from lower, to have received human body, to be free from samsara, not sufficient, must achieve enlightenment to liberate numberless sentient beings from all their sufferings and bring them to enlightenment and think therefore I am going to listen to oral transmission of the Diamond Cutter Sutra.

So definitely listening to this leaves positive imprint on the mental continuum to realize… positive imprint and that definitely makes near future, this life or future lives, in near future to be able to understand the teachings on emptiness, Perfection of Wisdom, understand the meanings and able to actualise the path that they reveal and then that directly ceases the defilements. And also with the method bodhicitta, the method path, able to cease even the subtle defilement, able to achieve enlightenment so this definitely leads to enlightenment. Even listening the teaching, listening just the words, definitely is possible it leads, hearing this definitely leads oneself to achieve enlightenment.

The reason I am writing in gold is when I was receiving teachings from Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche in Dharamsala some years ago, when I was living there for a long time, after Lama passed away, so there is a bodhisattva, Tibetan lama bodhisattava, Thogme Zangpo who composed the Thirty-seven Practices of Bodhisattva. There are two collections of his teachings. I received oral transmission of one volume from Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche, the other one I didn't get yet. The Tibetan Library had the text.

During that time I saw there are references, there is a quotation from the Prajnaparamita, the benefits of writing, there it says, the sutra says that worlds equalling number of sand grains of the river Ganga, the huge river, long river in India, huge river, very long how many sand grains there you can understand. That worlds equalling number of the same grains of the river Ganga, that many worlds, I think it says, if sentient beings living in that many worlds, build stupa, build… not sure if is Mount Meru or stupa, anyway build not with bricks but with jewels, seven different types of jewel; diamond, gold like that you build a stupa, all those sentient beings build stupas with seven types of jewel and cover the whole world, how many worlds? Equal number of the sand grains of the river Ganga so whole world you cover with this stupa. You build one stupa, it is directly, unbelievable purification, building one stupa, merits you collect this life like sky it directs your life toward enlightenment if you build a stupa. So therefore, now, here, that many worlds filled, covered with stupas with seven types of jewel, that much merit - and also make offering, every day make offering to stupa - that much merit, and then writing the Prajnaparamita, not with the gold just black ink, even just ordinary ink, this collects far greater merit than that many stupas built and making offering.

Therefore I saw this benefit said by Buddha, that was the main inspiration, that to build this statue of the Buddha of Loving Kindness, to generate to cause loving kindness in the world, needs a lot of merit for that big project so hoping by doing these things now that might help the success of this project. The idea is it is possible to do with different jewels. Mongolia, Tibet that happened, one text each line you write different jewels, pearls, silver, and I think different stones crushed and then write each line different precious jewels like that to collect a lot of merit and for purification.

(Tibetan oral transmission)

So pay attention every single word without mind being distracted. Then think each word that I listen may I able to actualise the meaning of that immediately in my mind. Each word that I listen may I be able to benefit all the sentient beings. When I explain they immediately are able to actualise emptiness in their mind and then liberate from all sufferings and bring them to enlightenment. So dedicate each word and then listen to effect that way.

If you generate strong wish like that that will happen because everything is a mind power, hell is a mind power, negative mind, enlightenment is power of wisdom, power of positive mind so like that. Even we have this human body is power of mind, power of virtuous thought, positive mind. Same all this enjoyment this Temple that we see appearance of this temple able to see statues, holy objects, able to have appearance of holy objects like this is also from power of thought, virtuous thought so like that.

(Tibetan oral transmission)

So here it says Buddha told the disciple Rabjur (Subudi), the man or woman who in the morning sacifrices your life make charity of your life, your body how many times equalling the number of the sand grains of the river Ganga, how many times in the morning you sacrifice your body, you give your body to other sentient beings equal to the number of the sand grains of the river Ganga. Then at noon 12 o' clock you sacrifice you make charity your body that many number, equaling the number of sand grains of the River Ganga. In afternoon you make charity of your body to others equal number of the same grains of the River Ganga. How many eons like that, not just for one day, but how many eons, ten million, ten million eons, but like that, how many times, maybe one hundred billion might be. I have forgotten the English name. Quite a few times I counted but I have forgotten. So ten hundred million is one terbum then 10 terbum is terbum chenpo great terbum now 10 great terbum is [confer unclear] 100 billion. So 100 billion, so must remember that. One hundred billion, ten million how many times chewa one hundred billion, but that doesn't stop there: 100 hundred billion how many times one hundred thousand, 100 billion like that 100,000 times that many eons you make your body charity to others, then that much merit somebody hears the Diamond Cutter Sutra teachings, after hearing you don't give up, you don't give up this teaching.

Just mentally not giving up these teachings, having faith in this teaching, not giving up this teaching, the merit after hearing, not giving up this teaching just that, the merit of this is far, numberless times inconceivable numberless times much greater, than that many eons of every day making charity in the morning, equal number of grains of the sands of the River Ganga, that many body, then again afternoon.

So you see externally its unbelievable even one day, if you do that how much merit you can collect is unbelievable, even you make charity your body even one body in the morning, one body in the afternoon it's unbelievable. Even to give one body, sacrifice, charity to sentient beings, even one is unbelievable. But then if you compare the merit to this, just having heard the teachings of Diamond Cutter Sutra and then having faith in that, not giving up this merit numberless times far greater. (Tibetan).

Then he says no question if somebody writes, so you can write this but also you can print.

[R confers unclear]

You can print. One thing is, you can write but also you can print if you print you finish very fast! So you can write with hand of course you have to bear more hardships so its more purification but I think also you can print so printing unbelievable merit. Here it says no question if somebody writes.

Even keeping the text, you are keeping this text at home, keeping text with yourself and reading trying to understand meaning, revealing to others no question it says. So when you want to create a lot of merit, most important for realisation, success of retreat, even business, if you have business difficulties, not working, business difficulties, unable to find job, business you have business difficulties, not much happening things, life is so difficult things not working well life is so difficult things not coming out, progressing well so you need a lot of merit - this shows you don't have enough merit to be successful. Even this life happiness, or this life work, because shortage merit, unable to success even this life work. However, then my advice is of course reading this text, to read, of course unbelievable purification and as I just mentioned now collect unbelievable merit such easy way to collect extensive merit and this is all atomic bomb to destroy root of samsara, ignorance when you read these teachings, when you listen, when you meditate all that.

Even printing making many, many copies of this then give to other people you can keep at home at all time, you can give to other people, can put in statues. If it is small text if you make very small, readable, then you can put it in small statutes there are many ways you can use you can carry as protection in the car, aeroplanes so they can help stop accident, even the aeroplanes cannot crash, how say, become very powerful protection. So you see carrying as protection the Chinese do that, Heart Sutra, very small in the car or even carry on the body because very high technique developed. We can make very small to put in statues, you can use many different ways so stupas and statues because normally we fill up with mantras so there are many ways you can use. So to print a lot collects unbelievable merit so that then, more merit means your life become easier, more merit means your wishes get, whatever you wish comes easy there are no hardships you think and it happens effortlessly, it comes.

The purpose of filling up the statues then, the Chinese Mahayana and Theravadin Hinayana they don't have tradition to fill up statues with all those precious, precious mantras but the Mahayana, the Secret Mantra, the Vajrayana which came from India from Buddha went to Tibet preserved in Tibet which was practised also in Nepal even now the Nepalese are practising like very common Vajrayogini practising very common in Nepal. This whole valley is an incredible holy place. You may see dirty and all these things dusty what is described what is Nepal, Kathmandu what is described in the west dusty, all that dirty and all that but when, anyway, in the view of the tourist, but in reality the unbelievable holy place, everywhere there is holy places, everywhere there are different yogis’ or deities’ holy places. There are many things. Buddha came there is one high mountain where Buddha gave petitions(?) and then Buddha Kashyapa, past Buddha… anyway there are many, many holy places, so it is extremely blessed place this one. Especially in Kathmandu and of course many parts of Nepal like that.

I am lost, my talk went on and on and lost again. So anyway doesn't matter that. That's right.

So the Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism, the Vajrayana, secret mantra yana or secret mantra vehicle, this is not something made up by Tibetan lamas. People who haven't learned, people who didn't really make good research, didn't really study well or they maybe learned some meditation or some rituals or maybe. Anyway… they think there is something made by Tibetan lamas and they call also Lamaism. Lamaism is wrong, I don't ----- called Lamaism. That's wrong, that gives negative interpretation that Tibetan Buddhism is just made up by Lamas, didn't come from Buddha, it implies it didn't come from Buddha. This is according to what I hear, the sound. Recently one Nepalese man came who is head of the Buddhist something Theravadin -------, so I told him how the tourist book uses “Lamaism.” The very early books they use “Lamaism.”

However the sutra and tantra practised by the Tibetans and with which they achieved realisation path and achieved enlightenment that came from Buddha, from India, from Buddha and the great Pandit yogis who wrote commentaries on the basis of Buddha's teaching. Everything is quoted to Buddha's teaching, the root, and the pandit's and yogis who achieved the realisation, who experimented. Everything is quoted to them. Anything contradictory to them that we don't practise, that doesn't lead to enlightenment, that doesn't lead to liberation and to enlightenment, so we don't practise that. Anything is harmonious to Buddha's teachings, the root and commentaries by Pandits Yogis, then after on the basis of that, the Tibetan Lamas wrote commentary.

In the East very important before the meditation practise you show references, you quote Buddha whether this is something taught by Buddha or not and then quotation refer to quotations of Indian Pandit Yogis’ commentaries. Then the Lama explains, on the basis of that, explain the meditation. That is how relying on source, that is how you can trust, that is how it is valid, otherwise you never know where it will lead to, instead of leading to liberation or enlightenment it will lead somewhere else.

But in the west it is totally different. The pure references, in the west that is not important to people minds. In the west immediately if you hear something that suits your mind, that you find, that makes you happy, that makes you immediately happy, like music, something that immediately makes you happy then you stay. If it doesn't make you happy then immediately you leave. In the west it is like that. There is no checking whether it is pure or not, whether you can trust this or not, whether it is a valid teaching or not, people don't see as important. Main thing is right now, immediately it suit your mind or not, whether it makes you happy or not. It is like, you taste food then it's good taste then you do it, so the very first taste it doesn't, so like that with teaching. Because you don't analyse you don't check the teaching because of that there is danger, great risk, your life can be easily misled and whole life, misled, great danger because there is no checking involved. It is only what makes you happy or not. As well as quality of teacher, all those things.

Then what I am saying? According to Vajrayana, the Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism the Vajrayana, came from India, from Buddhas, so there is a tradition that you supposed not to keep the statue empty you should fill it up with mantra. Then the throne, precious things like wealth vase and precious things. That’s same as making wealth vase for success harmony. Then from the top of the throne up to the head different mantra goes. Throne is mainly for wealth, to increase wealth so that you can practise dharma by receiving all the needs for your practise as well as to benefit others, to ------- in Buddha.

There are different mantras. Why you print, why you make a lot of expenses to print the mantra, those different teachings, mantra, and fill up the statue, is because, for example, if you print long life Buddha Amitayus text, which has mantras repeated again and again and followed by the benefits of the mantra. For example if you print this text, printing this text is unbelievable merit, incredible merit you collect by just printing or writing this text. So like that there are many other mantras if you print, unbelievable merits you collect. The purpose is the person… another method, another easy way to purify the negative karmas and collect extensive merit.

It did mention in the text that if you leave the statue empty then the obstacles due to that, not that Buddha made obstacle, but due to that, dependently arising obstacles can happen, it is mentioned. However the main thing why to fill up statues with different mantras is to collect merit. So when you do prostrations to the statue there are all these holy objects inside so you collect unbelievable merit. When you make offering, when you circumambulate it’s not just the statue there are so many holy objects inside, so when you circumambulate you circumambulate all these. So the sentient beings collect so much more merit, it becomes unbelievable powerful purification when they circumambulate.

For example there is one mantra that you write on the live tree that goes inside the statues and stupas called secret dharmakaya relic. If you have that mantra inside the statue or stupa then anybody who circumambulates, just one time circumambulation...
