Compassion, Universal Responsibility

…but that dependent on condition, this mind, which has all the potential, meeting the condition, meeting the perfect guide and then studying, then developing one's own mind, so quickly then one is able to develop the mind. So if this condition happens, able to develop the mind; if this condition did not happen then depending on what kind of condition the mind meets, it can lead to path, peerless happiness, the cessation of all the sufferings, all the obscurations, the peerless happiness the full enlightenment, the complete realization, created the complete realization or depending on what kind of condition this mind meets then the mind can lead to also problems, sufferings.

So however, so therefore no matter how much heavy problem, no matter how much heavy disease one has now, how much heavy problems, the relationship problems, whatever, no matter how much heaviest negative actions that one meet, however all these are temporary and all these can be completely, as these things happened depending on another cause and conditions, these things completely can be eliminated by depending on another cause and conditions. So this mind has, so therefore our life has all the hope, there is all the hope, any benefit what we wish for other sentient beings, we can benefit; any happiness what we want to receive, can receive.

So now, because of this nature of the mind, that which is clear light, the potential that which is the nature of the fully enlightened being, so therefore we can develop compassion. Even there's no compassion now, but one can develop compassion, one can generate compassion, one can develop compassion because of that, because the mind is a dependent arising, mind is not independent, inherently existent, it's dependent arising, so compassion is also not independent, not inherently existent; it exists by depending on cause and conditions, so therefore one can, by depending on these cause and conditions that's how we can generated compassion, that's how we can transform the mind into compassion.

So however, in this world, as I often say, in this world many times happened that because one powerful person did not practice compassion, so therefore, many millions of people got tortured and suffered, died, were killed, so this happened historically time to time. So now this one person, this one powerful person, if this person practiced compassion, then, this one powerful person practiced compassion, then all the millions of people wouldn't have to suffer, they wouldn't receive all these sufferings, tortured and being killed, all these things. So they would receive, so therefore they would have much happiness, absence of all these harms, what they receive from this one person, so if this one person practiced compassion, all these millions of people would have much peace.

But now here we're talking only human beings. But there's numberless, much more than human beings, so many millions of millions of millions living beings they are killed in the water, on the earth, many, many creatures, many insects, creatures, so many, uncountable numbers of, millions that got killed. So all these beings have to suffer, got killed, it's because this one powerful person did not practice compassion. So if this one powerful person practiced compassion, all those millions of insects, all those millions and millions of beings would have peace, absence of all those harms. So we can see how one person can bring peace to the world or can destroy the world, one person, depending on whether this person practices compassion or not. So, that is clear.

So now same, if oneself doesn't practice compassion there can be danger like that. Even it did not happen this life but maybe other lives. Similar like that or the other thing is, if one does not practice compassion, what there is is only the self-centered mind, so stronger there is self-centered mind, easy to rise anger, easy to rise dissatisfied mind the desire, jealousy, so forth, or ill will, so easy to rise all these other disturbing thoughts. So because of the ego, the self-centered mind, then those other thoughts rise and as it's stronger then those other thoughts rise easier and stronger. So then when these thoughts rise, then give harm, out of these negative, disturbing thoughts then what action comes is harm, in the family, to other people, even the animals, even those other beings. However so there is danger that if one doesn't practice compassion, starting from the family, the person with whom one lives together in everyday life, work together, eat together, starting from that, the family, people in the office, with whom one works together, the people in the country, the numberless, there's danger all the living beings they receive harm from oneself.

So if one practices compassion then out of this compassion there is no action, there is no harmful actions comes. So, the action of harming gets stopped if there's compassion within one's mind. So, starting from the family, starting from the person with whom one lives together in everyday life, starting from there, all the rest of the people in that country, then all the rest of the living beings they don't receive harm from oneself. So harm what they don't receive from you is peace, is peace that they are receiving from you. So, then, so all that peace that they receive, which is the absence of harm, all that peace that they receive depends on you.

Then, the second thing, as one has compassion within one's mind, so on the top of, besides not giving harm, one attempts to benefit for other living beings. So one attempts to benefit starting from the family, the nearest person, from there, to all the rest of the living beings, one attempt to benefit. There's two things, if one practices compassion, first starting from the family all the rest of the beings they don't receive harm, that's the first thing. So that's one peace. Second, with compassion, you try to benefit starting from the nearest person, so all the living beings. So that is another peace, happiness, that one is causing. So therefore, now all these living beings' happiness, peace that they are receiving from you is dependent to you. So it is completely in your own hands. Whether you want to cause happiness to everyone, whether you want to give this peace to everyone or not or harm, whether give peace or harm. So all the living beings starting from the nearest person, so that is completely in one's own hands. So if one practices compassion then everyone receives peace; if one does no practice compassion, everyone receives harm.

So therefore, now, each of us here is completely responsible for all the living beings' happiness. Each of us here is responsible happiness of each person here in this hall, so starting from the family, how many members in the family, one person or ten people, one is completely responsible for their happiness, peace, in day-to-day life, and then how many people there are in the city, human beings, non-human beings, how many there are in the country, oneself is completely responsible all their happiness. Then like this, all the human beings, all the living beings living on this earth, one is completely responsible to obtain happiness for them, to obtain happiness for all of them.

Now not only that, not only this world, one is completely responsible all sentient beings, one is completely responsible to cause happiness, to obtain happiness for all the sentient beings, one is completely responsible to free everyone from all the problems and to obtain peace, cause happiness.

So first, before talking about how to live the life, so this is the fundamental, this is the foundation, this feeling of responsibility, universal responsibility is the foundation in order to enjoy the life, in order to enjoy how to live the life, in order to enjoy the life, in order to find satisfaction in the life. How we live the life, the work that we do, in order to not become the cause of problems and to become cause of happiness, so then that way to enjoy the life, feeling of universal responsibility is fundamental, is the foundation, like earth. So if there's earth, so if there's ground, earth, then you can make fields, mountains, or tunnels, as there are many tunnels in the West, so it's part of enjoyment, because it's always boring to drive outside, so sometimes drive through the mountains, anyway, that any enjoyment, building house, factory, whatever it is, one can do. So like that, the universal responsibility most, for peace it's the first thing to learn and to feel, to transform the mind in that. So this meditation is extremely important, this meditation that I just now described, this is the reality, so thinking this way, it's talking reality.

So the other thing, [pause] so it is important even now to feel the universal responsibility, that how one is responsible to free everyone from the nearest person, animal or person, whoever is nearest being, from that, then everyone, to feel them from all the problems, from harm, then ?create peace, happiness. All the sentient beings this peace, happiness what they receive from you, that is dependent to you, dependent to oneself, so that's how one is responsible.

So in our day-to-day life, depending how others think of you, how others look at you, how others speak to you, how others look at you, speak to you, how others think of you, so if others look at you out of compassion, out of love, compassion, it makes oneself happy. If others look at you without compassion, with ego, only with self-cherishing thought, with self-centered mind, thinking of only her problems, only his problems, nothing else, happiness of oneself, nothing else other than that, or anger, pride, so when others attitude towards you like this, so that makes oneself upset, unhappy. And then when others treat you respectfully, it makes oneself happy. When others look at you, thank you or with affection, with compassion, loving kindness, makes one happy. So with the loving mind when others smile to oneself, makes oneself happy. So however one's own happiness dependent on, our daily life happiness dependent on the people around oneself, living beings who are around oneself, depending their attitude, how they act, how they behave towards you. So therefore, one's own happiness dependent to them.

So now exactly the same, in our day-to-day life, the surrounding people, animals, people who are around oneself, their happiness dependent to oneself, how one thinks towards them, whether one looks at them out of compassion or not, loving kindness or not, whether one feel concern or not, how one speaks, how one acts with the body, so depending on that, the surrounding people, in the office, in the family, wherever, so depending on that, depending on how one behaves, how one thinks of them, looks at them, so it makes them happy or unhappy. So again from this day-to-day life experience or recognition, through this recognition our day-to-day life how others affect to you, bring happiness and unhappiness, then how one affects to others, the people around oneself, even animals, so therefore, so however also with this reason, this is another reason how one is responsible other sentient beings', other living beings' happiness.

So, however, the person who has much loving kindness or compassion, that one, as there is that much good heart, there's more happiness in the life. One gives less harm to other beings, there is less _______ to other beings, less harm to others, less harm one gives other sentient beings. And less guilt there is and as there is more compassion, more benefit to others, more happiness. However more concern that one has towards others, there is less problem of loneliness, depression, all these problems. Stronger compassion there is there is that much concern towards other living beings. So to that person who has good heart, very easy to find friend. Wherever the person is living, wherever the person goes, everybody becomes friend to that person, helper. Even the person is staying at home, in the family, everybody likes that person, everybody appreciates, everybody enjoys to be with that person. Same thing outside people or inside people, a person who is warm-hearted, concerned others, then there's good vibration, other people feel, people are happy to see that person any time outside, always want to see that person, always want to help that person. Even that person doesn't have problems, but people ask if they want any help, people come to help even the person doesn't need help.

However so there's much success in the spiritual practice, there's much success in, because less obstacles, person creates less obstacles as there's that much good heart, so the person creates less obstacles so more success in the spiritual practice, in the meditation practice and also even the works of this life there's much success. So it's very easy life and that person becomes source of happiness to others.

So the other person who doesn't have compassion, mind is very self-centered, very egoistic, because of that very impatient, so forth, very dissatisfied mind, overwhelmed by strong desire, dissatisfied mind, only thinking of oneself, only seeking happiness for self, only the happiness of this life, so however that person then there is no harmony in the family, there is no harmony with outside people however even coming back to home there's enemy, all the family become enemy then also so many enemies even outside, in the office there are enemies, wherever the person house is, wherever, so many people become enemy. So so many problems and so much confusion in the life, then much loneliness and more depression, all these problems, even the person needs help, other people don't want to help. Even that person asks for help, other people don't want to help, other people don't want to see. Even they rejoice while the person is sick or when the person dies. If something bad happens, other people rejoice, rather then praying for success, for healthy, so forth.

So the need of compassion is unbelievable important not only for the happiness for oneself but the happiness of the family, happiness of people in the country, happiness of all the living beings, especially for others, all the numberless living beings, to generate compassion within one's mind becomes the most important thing. So, even nowadays we relax our mind not being afraid that this person will kill me or that this person will harm me, not having doubt, not having fear and that we are able to relax with a comfortable mind is because trusting that this person doesn't have negative mind to harm oneself. Trusting, why we're relaxed, comfortable mind, that is because our belief, our trust that the surrounding people won't harm me, won't _____ cause to harm me. Because of trust. If we don't have that trust, then we cannot relax, live with much fear. So therefore now, for the protection of others' lives it's so important that oneself generate compassion and one's own happiness comes from others, depends upon ?generosity, good heart. Otherwise one's own life is in danger. If the surrounding people's minds changes, then it is a minute [snaps fingers], it the friend, the next person, if his or her mind changes, if there's no compassion, if it changes, one's own life is in danger in a minute. So, like this, so one's own life is dependent on others' compassion so others' lives dependent, also others' protection of the life dependent also to oneself, one's own compassion.

So however the compassion is the source of happiness for oneself, compassion is the source of happiness of all the living beings. So as I mentioned before, you the one person, oneself, if one has generated compassion then every other living being does not receive harm and they receive help, so it causes happiness to all the living beings, not only temporary but ultimate happiness. Then, it leads to, it brings, the compassion makes oneself to bring everyone to end of the whole suffering and cause, ultimate happiness, and highest, full enlightenment. So the compassion is the source of happiness of oneself, happiness of all the other living beings. So therefore, this becomes the most precious thing. So in our daily life it is the first thing, compassion is the first thing that we should think about. In among all the things that we have to do in our life, compassion, the altruism, is the first thing that we have to remember when we get up in the morning.

So now like this, when we get up in the morning, first thing in the morning, so we remember what's the meaning of my life. The meaning of life is to pacify everyone's, to free everyone from all the problems and causes and to obtain happiness for everyone, temporary, ultimate happiness. Best is ultimate happiness, if one can think of that, so first remember the purpose of one's own life, meaning of the life, and this is the meaning of my life.

Then, the way to do this is by transforming the mind, the way to do this is by changing the attitude, by transforming the mind, by generating compassion. The way to do this is by generating compassion, be developing all the inner good qualities of mind, wisdom and method, wisdom knowing what is right and wrong, what is cause of happiness, what is the cause of suffering, knowing the ultimate nature, conventional nature, ultimate nature, developing the mind means the wisdom and method, such as compassion so forth.
