Parkinson’s Disease

A student asked Rinpoche for advice regarding his diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.

My most dear, precious, kind, wish-fulfilling one,
I checked and you need to wear White Umbrella deity [Tib: dü-kar] protection.

Ngang-chu [inner offering pills]* came out best, so you need to take three pills each day for eleven weeks. You can eat them separately—morning, midday and evening.

Then the seed from the bodhi tree where the Buddha became enlightened came out next. It’s a great blessing and purifies negative karma and defilements, and for realizations to develop the mind. By the way, it purifies sickness and spirit harm. It comes out good to take three a day for four weeks.

You should recite at least one mala of Black Manjushri mantra each day; more is better. You also need to wear another protection with numbers.

The other thing is to do lo-jong [mind training]. See my past teachings and advice on how to do this. If you can, get a translation of Gyalse Thogme Zangpo’s advice** for transforming sickness, etc.

For a Dharma practitioner, this sickness is not a problem but a quality. Especially for those who practice thought transformation, bodhicitta, this is not a problem; it is the best thing to happen. So you can take the suffering of all sentient beings—especially those who have Parkinson’s disease—on the ego and destroy the self-cherishing thought and the truly existent I. Utilize the disease on the path to enlightenment, to free the sentient beings from the oceans of samsaric suffering and bring them to peerless enlightenment. So always have the idea that you are experiencing this for numberless sentient beings—for numberless hell beings, numberless hungry ghosts, numberless animals, numberless human beings, numberless suras and numberless asuras.

Even if you die, with this thought you will never be reborn in the lower realms. You will be reborn in a pure land; you will have a higher rebirth and meet Dharma again. Not to take drugs and those things again, but to meet the Dharma. Have good luck.

With much love and prayers...

Notes

*Ngang-chu pill came out best for him. Maybe this is what comes out best for people with Parkinson’s disease, so there’s no need to do lots of checking in the future.
