A student had strong lung (wind imbalance) and wrote to Rinpoche for advice.

My most dear, most kind, most precious, wish-fulfilling one,
I am very sorry for the long delay in replying to your email. I checked and what comes out for you is to recite the Heart Sutra with bodhicitta motivation. So please try to recite the Heart Sutra as much as you can.

For the motivation please think, “The purpose of my life is not only to achieve happiness for myself—temporary happiness and even ultimate happiness, liberation from the oceans of samsaric sufferings—but also to free the numberless sentient beings from the oceans of samsaric sufferings and its causes, and bring them to the peerless happiness, full enlightenment. Therefore I am going to recite the Heart Sutra.”

Think you are reciting this text for all the sentient beings, whoever needs the Heart Sutra. Then do the recitations slowly, meditating on the meaning.

You need to burn a special substance called dugzhe that I have from His Holiness the Dalai Lama. You burn it, like sprinkled on incense, and you smell the smoke as it burns. I will post it to you.

I am doing one practice called Vajra Claws for you. I will do this right after I finish the letter for you. In addition I requested one of the Sangha members in the house to do the same practice for you. So, this is done.

You also need to wear the Most Secret Hayagriva protection. I will send this to you.

If you are able to come to Kopan or someplace where I will be staying, then there is also one practice for lung called mani harthön. It needs to be explained orally how to do it, not written down. I received this from Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche, and it was my first Dharma connection with him. Geshe Lama Konchog had wanted the lineage so I received from Kirti Tsenshab Rinpoche.

Mani harthön means to exhale strongly and with it there are meditation exercises with the hands. I gave the oral transmission to Geshe Lama Konchog and Lama Lhundrup. It is a very secret practice and I have only given it to a few people. This practice came from when Lama Tsongkhapa studied emptiness so much and took some aspect of lung, then he received this practice from on older monk.

If you are able to come to where I am staying, then I will try to give to you. This is my advice at this time. I am doing prayers for you.

With much love and prayers ...
